Solving the WiFi woes on the Ui16

- My Soundcraft Ui16 has been nearly perfect but one of my clients had some issues with the WiFi on it. I think I have figured out all of their issues so I wanted to put a video out talking about where these seem to stem from.
I have the Ui24r and keeping a connection has been a big problem even when my tablet sits on top of the unit. I also use another one with my band....same problems. I set up an external router on both and they work but at times there's a disconnect. Both the routers were used so that might be a reason why they aren't used anymore so I just bought a more powerful one and configured it. So far so good but your advice of turning off the auto connect sounds good. That'll be next. Great video.
I hope this is not confusing lol. You are correct on your assumption. I am a network engineer, and administrator. If you want rock solid performance out of the UI16 get a better grade router something in the realm of a Netgear nighthawk. Then program your UI 16 manually Instead of depending upon the auto negotiation of network protocols. To do this, program the UI 16 to a specific IP address that is in same IP address range as a your router. you can even go a step further with in your router and reserve the IP address that you manually programmed your UI 16 with, so router doesn't automatically assigned to another device if more than one device is being used. This will fix a lot of connectivity issues. Next step is to connect to UI 16 to your router with a good cat6 cable. Once all of these connections and setting are complete, restart the UI 16, then connect up to your UI16 with your smart device go into the settings on the UI 16 and turn off the built in hot spot Wi-Fi of the UI16 altogether. Now, if for whatever reason you have to restart your smart device or router you won't lose your connection with the UI 16 and it will just always be present, because UI's IP address being statically programmed. with the UI 16, it appears that it doesn't always renegotiate an IP address if the router has a hiccup. it puts UI 16 in network limbo when you're using the audio negotiation protocol with you the UI getting an IP address from your router, and you'll get the error message on your smart device, saying "connecting". statically programming everything is way more stable way. So you have to turn off auto reconnect on all of the connections of any smart devices being used with UI16. I found on some of the cheaper routers, if they're on all the time or using them for an extended period of time, they get hot due to poor cooling solutions cheaper routers use and they will clock them selves down to reduce heat. Once the router gets to a certain temperature, it will clock itself down and that tiny little interruption will break your wireless connection with the UI 16 if you are using the UI 16 built in Wi-Fi. Many times it require rebooting the UI 16 to correct it, which is a hassle because you have to turn off all your speakers first. It looks to me like that UI16 will not always renegotiate a connection without rebooting it. thus the reason for hard programming it
Is there a specific Netgear Nighthawk that you would recommend… cause to be honest with you although being fairly knowledgeable, of the mixing aspect of this board, I would honestly consider myself quite ignorant when it comes to the IT part….🤷🏻 So any advice that you have would be greatly appreciated for sure…👍👍👍
Nope. Mine is always connected to an external WiFi6 router. Never had issues and not going to risk using the internal WiFi router.
Chrome is garbage for the UI interface, I suggest Opera for the amazon tablet, Im using the Amazon Fire HD10 and have never had a problem. The best thing to do with the external router is only allow 5g and to also hide your SSID, this will also stop an auditorium full of kids from trying to connect to the mixer. The internal wifi is the same for the 12,16 and 24.
I got a Beryl AX router from router and used double sided tape to tape it over the WiFi sign. My rack case cover still closes over it. I turned off the 2.4ghz network and just use 5ghz. Don’t know the range but I’m always close to the mixer and don’t have any problems. Using my iPhone with it is a real pain though.
You will have much better luck with an Apple device on the Soundcraft. An external router of any kind is also always a great idea.
I stopped using my Ui12 because the connection was not reliable enough. It would only work hard wired. It would not stay connected on wifi. Either the built in hotspot or a external router.
Could it simply have been that the default Amazon tablet browser didn't support HTML5?
Please i need a solution...am so frustrated with the ui24r i just got few months....the wifi is not blinking and the hdmi is not showing also..just the LR blinking till eternity..please what is the solution
Best bet would be a factory reset and if that doesn't work contact SoundCraft as something could be physically wrong.
I’m having a big issue with my ui16
I keep getting the “connecting” message on my screen if I hold my iPad a no farther than a foot away from the mixer.
So I cant control the sound well I’m am playing anymore without having to leave the iPad setting on the mixer.
But we played a show at a different place and it worked well, I could walk away from the mixer to sound check. But then, that same day we played at our weekly gig and again could not connect.
I’m new to mixing and I do my best to research but I can’t figure this out. And it’s messing with my bands show every week.
Is there a fix without buying a router? Because it worked just fine at the other show. And some weeks we set up just the same as every week and it just works fine allowing distance from the mixer and not freezing with the connecting message.
Is there anyone willing to help me and walk me through this?

A router is a good idea, but it sounds like you are having the issue I mention in the video where your iPad wants to connect to the venues WiFi. Make sure you have automatically connect turned off for any WiFi options at that venue.
Close the browser.
Open the proper browser.
Search for a proper Android tablet.......🙂
