They don't have any respect for non - changelings, whatsoever. They wouldn't bother to tell the truth to others, except if it suited their purposes.
Changeling spies probably make it part of their standard practice to use their last words to sew dissent and mayhem into their enemies intel.
I would almost say it telling Odo that could be ironclad proof that they are _not_ everywhere. But again, they would want us to think they were everywhere, regardless of if they are or not. 😵‍💫
So all we really know from what it told Odo is that they want us to be paranoid about them. 😕

I had exactly the same thought. 😃 But then I watched even more carefully and realized that Sisko does the same thing. 🫤 In fact, no one but Jake drinks anything in that scene. It's actually very common on tv when they film several takes of a scene (they'd run out of drinks and need more bathroom breaks if the actors are actually drinking every take). So I'm not convinced that it was an intentional clue from the writers/director. But maybe.

I always knew Rom would be one of your favorites. You really need to consider reacting to "Babylon 5" after this. It's right up your alley, and the exciting moments are far more intense. There's also a lot more to speculate on, as there's a 5-year plotline that was mapped out in advance, so everything is a clue to something else. Every question gets answered. Starts a little slow, but seasons 3 and 4, put DS9 to shame, and I love DS9.

FACETS shows us that DS9 can make an engaging, well written episode with no threat of any kind. It's just our favorite characters having a day and getting great character development.
Nog and Rom are SO far from their first appearances that we've come to love them both.
Dax and Odo leveled up as well- both becoming more confident and understanding of each other.
THE ADVERSARY is indeed a nod to The Thing (because everyone loves that movie) particularly the blood testing scene.
It does indeed show how much damage one Founder can cause.
Sisko is now CAPTAIN Sisko! Finally!
Eddington has a nice moment with Sisko explaining why someone stays in Security. instead of going for a command. It's an important role too. Same with O'Brien.
Odo kills another changeling. Yeah, that's gonna be a thing.
Now we gotta worry about anyone being a changeling.
I know you've already seen it, so you know next episode is the shit!😎🖤

Apropos of nothing, the Star Trek: The Animated Series touched on the Tzenkathi, which are basically the Kzinti (pronounced very similarly) and are a nod to the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode "The Slaver Weapon" - written by Larry Niven, who wrote Ringworld (a very famous book series) which features Kzinti as giant cat people.

45:15 "WHERE ARE THEY GUYS?" - the Changeling already said; They are *everywhere*. Remember Odo (who is relatively bad at shapeshifting) can become anything from a mouse to a bird to a humanoid to a giant shield that covers Kira when rocks fall on her, to a giant monster, to a spinning top, to ... a mirror.
Remember in Terminator 2 when the T1000 came out of the floor? You ain't seen nothing yet :D
No specific spoiler, but how do you know there isn't a Changeling in Sisko's office, as... THE WINDOW? Or the carpet. Or his pen. Or his comm-badge. There's no way to know. Difficult to give a Tricorder a blood test ;-)

44:00 "Changelings as ash" -- yeah it's a neat little effect. I never really thought about what a Changeling would look like when it dies, but it's pretty cool. There's a couple of Changeling deaths in the show and it's a neat little effect when the dust starts to collapse. Nothing spectacular, it's not going to win any awards, but it's ... kinda cool. Also ironic that in death, they become solid :D
And yeah it's nice that they can die. Well, not nice, but I mean story wise - they wanted to avoid another Borg thing where "WE CANT STOP THEM AT ALL!!!" wouldn't work if they want to use them for 4 seasons. It works with the Borg for 1 or 2 episodes per series, but you can't have a literally immortal god being, it'd be like having battles against the Q every week - by the end of it you'd just think they were lame and "suped up".

"Why didn't the changeling also knock out O'Brien?" - because then the Defiant would blow up and the series would end early :-) - he could have done it earlier when he was with Dax. Or when he was in the conduits with him at the beginning.

45:26 Yeah I remember as a fan I didnt expect this as a finale either. While the episode is good and ends on the ominous warning you mentioned, I remember at the time feeling somewhat underwhelmed.
Years later I found out that the writers had a COMPLETELY different story in mind for this season finale, and it would have ended on a cliffhanger. However the studio told the producers not to end this season on a cliffhanger and to scale it back a little. By now you know how they opened Season 4, and so what we’ve learned since is that the studio gave the producers a directive to do something to shake up the series because, at the time, it simply wasn’t as popular as TNG, and a lot of Trek fans openly despised DS9 at the time. So they were given a directive to end season 3 without a finale so they could do a few things to shake up the show during the summer hiatus. Enter: Worf.

The Nitpicker's Guide has nothing for this episode, but I need to ask:
Who gets to keep the gold Curzon won while playing Tongo?
Odo was in Curzon's body, but does it really belong to Dax?
    THE ADVERSARY (IMDb rating: 8.3)
31:50 Dax opens and closes the tricorder between each scan.
Apparently, tricorders don't have a reset button.

I'm OK with recaps, but I'd prefer not to see upcoming scenes for the episode being viewed -- it's like being loaded with spoilers.
I was a bit taken aback when Chief O'Brien said Sisko was the best Captain in Starfleet. After all, he did serve under Picard.
I thought Sisko made a bad command decision when he put people in teams of two -- the best way for a changeling to take some one over would be to isolate them that way. Teams of three would've made more sense. (Yes, I know... "story"!)
Couldn't they just stun everyone (save one) and work it out that way? (Yes, I know... "story"!)

06:50 "Kinda like a soul". Trek has a weird thing here. They never ever confirm the existence of "souls" - given we deal with "mirror universe" or "transporter duplicates" a few times - who has the soul of Riker? Thomas or William? Is the soul split in two? With Data, they directly address this in Measure of a Man saying "I don't know if he has a soul. I don't know if *I* have a soul." etc.
What Trek DOES have is "neuroletic energy". That is the brainwave patterns of someone and it contains their personality. This CAN be transferred and whatever tech stuff with. This is what Spock has in Star Trek 3 - the "Katra" as Vulcans call it. Other people have, what we could call a "soul" addressed as "neuroletic energy".
tl;dr it's Trek's way of saying "yes, there's a soul, but no, we're not directly saying it so we don't annoy anyone on EITHER side of the god/atheism debate".
In this case in Facets, we'd say the neuroletic energy of the Dax symbiont has been shared out among others. And this integrates with those people's brains and [blah blah]. Brush over it, basically. And that's fine because none of the episodes here are *about* souls per se - it's just a techno way of moving the story along.
It's a neat little way of making it / wording it such that if you, as the viewer, believe in "souls" and what-not, then you can interpret it that way if you like. It also allows for people who do not believe in souls to interpret it another way - but the end result is the same, and there's no (real) heated arguments over it. Either view is totally valid here - which is just a testament to the good writing.
"How do we talk about souls and the afterlife and religion, without annoying the atheists? And how do we beam people around without annoying the religious people?"
    Easy: Neuroletic Energy. :D

      @theadamabrams 2 місяці тому +1

I'm pretty sure it's "neuroleptic", or sometimes "neurolytic" (both of which are IRL scientific words, although Star Trek uses them-as you say-for vague brain/personality/soul stuff). Searching Memory Alpha for "neuroletic" doesn't return anything with that spelling.
_DS9_ deals much more closely with religion than any other _Trek_ show. In fact, it basically asserts at times that the Bajoran religion is 100% real. But even then it gives a technobabble explanation as well ("non-corporeal wormhole aliens" vs. "The Prophets"), which many in-universe characters use instead of adopting those religious beliefs.

In fact, if you somehow ''forgot'' to sing it every single time, and we never had to...err...i mean..had the privilege...to ever hear you do it again....i'd be totally okay with that. One of the few Jadzia stories that worked for me at all by this point, and only the Odo/Curzon bit.
Even still, I did *not* like the "secretly in love with you" cliche. It takes skill for writers to make a cliched story about a character like Dax.
I think the writers were absolutely thrilled by the Dax character but I found Jadzia almost relentlessly boring. That's because most of the time she's commenting on what Dax's previous hosts would do or say. Who cares? It's little different than anybody rambling on about their past.
That kind of character trait should be used very sparingly and only when it counts for some reason.
