    Back in 2014 I asked Armin Shimerman about the root beer scene and he told me a great story involving it.
    Armin had a routine of inviting the actors he'd be sharing a scene with the next day over to his house the night before to run through their lines together. The night before they shot the root beer scene, he invited Andrew Robinson, ie. Garak, over and they worked out their approach to the scene. They both envisioned a deep, underlying current of seriousness in what was a bit lighthearted of a scene and determined that they wanted to emphasis the seriousness of the dialogue over the comedic aspects.
    The next day when they began to film, the director wanted them to portray the characters in the more light-hearted spirit in which the scene was written but they objected. Armin pointed out that he's normally a trooper, going along with his directors' decisions since it's their job to make those calls. However, on this scene, he put his foot down and insisted on a more serious approach. Andy Robinson had his back as the two actors stood fast in their belief that it should be played with a more serious tone. They held their ground until finally the director contacted executive producer Rick Berman himself.
    Berman showed up on set and both actors and the director made their arguments. Berman suggested they run through takes of both approaches before filming. They did and after watching both, Berman looked at the director and said, "Do it Armin's way." Armin said it was the only time he ever challenged a director's take on a scene but felt it was the right choice. I tend to agree.

    The Quark and Garak conversation in this episode is still one of my favorite pieces of dialogue in all of Star Trek. Its two outsiders trying to figure out if they want to "buy in" to the Federations way of thinking or if they can afford not to. And both actors just make it that much more impactful. Also, the scene was originally meant to be a light/comical time filling scene by the director, but Armin Shimerman and Andrew Robinson saw the potential, and straight gave it to us.

    DS9 makes a huge change here. It becomes far more serious and dark. The intro theme alludes to this but also shows how busy the station is, and adding the Defiant in was totally necessary.

      “'a”: Indicates a conjunction, similar to “but.”
      “jlh”: Translates to “I am.”
      “chimta’”: Refers to something that has been fully emptied or deserted. In this context, it conveys being unblemished or beautiful.

    Avery Brooks prefers being bald and was told to grow out his hair and shave his goatee when he initially got the role.
    Later on he was able grew out his goatee and when Ira Steven Behr took over full control of the show in season 4 he was able to shave his head and the series become way more serialized.

  • @brucechmiel7964
    @brucechmiel7964 Місяць тому +14

    Season 4 was a relaunch of the series. Affectionately called DS9 2.0. Though some may argue that the relaunch happen in season three. According to Ira Steven Behr and Michael pillar, they needed something to revitalize the interest of the show since ratings were falling apart, and it was just getting good. Step one was to bring in the TNG fans. And second, they wanted to shake things up a bit and reestablish the status quo. One idea was to have Vulcan leave the Federation. Fortunately, they harken back to a line from season three’s The Die Is Cast. When the changeling infiltrator told Odo and Garak that the only threats left to the Dominion are the Federation and the Klingons. And they will not be a threat much longer.
    The gamble worked, bringing in Michael Dorn as a series regular did bring in the viewers. The show was never truly safe from cancellation but the stories are a lot tighter and more character driven materials are going to cement DS9 in great television history.

    • @Calzaki
      @Calzaki Місяць тому +2

      Everyone always say the ratings dipped buts not actually true, not in the way people think anyway. Every season started off strong and then they'd get about two thirds into the season when the network takes a break and showed reruns for a couple of weeks and it killed momentum and the viewers didn't come back so strong for the next 8 weeks or so but did come back after the summer. I think the reason for DS9 2.0 was more about how DS9 had good ratings but was never the cultural/ratings Juggernaut that was TNG. Plus they were now expecting competition from Voyager which unlike TNG and DS9 was being run on UP not in syndication and they thought it would distract viewers

      This was a key moment for DS9 and they knew it. They were now competing with Voyager which was newer, flashier and continued the more familiar formula of a Federation starship travelling from adventure to adventure. Voyager was seen as the sequel series and successor to Next Gen, while DS9 was stuck with middle child syndrome.
      What DS9 did have in their favour though, now that Next Generation had ended, was free reign over the politics of the Alpha Quadrant, and they took full advantage to dramatically increase the scale and consequences of their stories. Way of the Warrior was DS9's big grab for attention and they succeeded admirably.

    Someone's probably beaten me to it but "The reason Avery Brooks is bald" = Avery Brooks always used to shave his head before Deep Space Nine. Shaved head and a goatee was just his "look" and how he appeared in previous TV roles. But when he was cast in DS9 they insisted he not shave his head or have a beard. There were some really weird excuses apparently like "we can't have two bald captains/commanders" but the truth was the paramount producers thought a black man with a shaved head and goatee looked too threatening *ugh*. So it took him two year to convince them and then only to let them phase it in over a year, trying the beard first and then shaving his head.

  • @tofersiefken
    @tofersiefken Місяць тому +4

    The Klingons have arrived, so has Worf (with a photo cameo from teenaged Alexander), and Sisko has shaved (his head, not his goatee). This is where the series picks up steam and powers through the remainder of the series with some great narrative arcs coming to fruition.

  • @Jeremy-83

    The music when the Klingon attack begins is straight from Generations when the Duras sisters attacked the Enterprise. DS9 also holds the record for most on screen models active in a single scene and is the most heavily armed outpost in the Federation by the end of season 4.

    • @sarcasticstartrek7719
      @sarcasticstartrek7719 2 місяці тому +1

      I don't think it's ever said DS9 is the most heavily armed outpost in the Federation.... In the sector, yes, but as we saw in Picard, Earth's Spacedock has more defences.

    • @Jeremy-83
      @Jeremy-83 2 місяці тому

      @sarcasticstartrek7719 I literally stated a time frame for the stations armaments and yes it was stated in multiple episodes that DS9 was the most important and the first line of defense against the Dominion. It was outfitted and modified to its very limits as Cardassian technology would allow. Had the ability to one shot scout and attack style vessels and as we saw, cruisers and larger didn't fair to much better. During the period at the end of season 4 till then end of the series DS9 was the most important, heavily defended and armed space station in the quadrant. Now if we're talking about planetary bases and places like Earth, that is obviously not the case because planetary systems were equipped with orbital defenses as well as emplacement batteries. My comments were specifically about outposts and space stations not tied to planetary bases.

      Suppose I should mark this as a spoiler...
      @sarcasticstartrek7719 Oh, of course, you're absolutely right. DS9 wasn't even on the list of heavily defended outposts with its 6 Type XI phaser banks,
      63 Type X phaser arrays, total output 1,250,000 TeraWatts, 66 Pulse fire photon torpedo tubes. Several canon sourced technical manuals have DS9 indicies at thousands of times the combined firepower of top of the line Federation starships at the time. Not to even mention being the headquarters of the ninth fleet, including but not limited to...
      Starships assigned
      Federation Starfleet
      USS Adirondack (2374)
      USS Akagi (2374-2375)
      USS Capetown (2374)
      USS Defiant (2374-2375)
      USS Exeter (2374-2375)
      USS Galaxy (2374)
      USS Geronimo (2374)
      USS Hood (2374)
      USS Nautilus (2374)
      USS Potemkin (2374-2375)
      USS ShirKahr (2374)
      USS Sutherland (2374-2375)
      USS Tian An Men (2374)
      USS Timur (2374)
      USS Valley Forge (2374)
      USS Venture (2374)
      USS Yeager (2374-2375)
      Klingon Defense Force
      IKS Azrak (2374)
      IKS Ch'Tang (2375)
      IKS Koraga (2375)
      IKS Malpara (2375)
      IKS Ning'tao (2375)
      IKS Orantho (2375)
      IKS Rotarran (2374-2375)
      IKS Slivin (2375)
      This list also does not include the Warbird presence, which was definitely present.
      The combined firepower of DS9 and its defenders (not even including the entirety of the ninth fleet) power rating was calculated to be around 100,000. To put it in context, a Borg cube of that year was calculated at 61,000. So yeah, I guess you're right. Not heavily defended at all. My bad.

Dual focus is when the background character and foreground character are in focus, but everything else isn't - it's very difficult to do and almost impossible on a moving camera. They use it in Star trek The motion Picture on the bridge a lot (for some weird reason).

    The bing chatbot says "The Klingon phrase “luq ‘a jlh chimta’ law’” translates to English as “Agreed, but I am more chImta’” 1. Let’s break it down: “luq”: This means “agreed” or “yes.”
    “'a”: Indicates a conjunction, similar to “but.”
    “jlh”: Translates to “I am.”
    “chimta’”: Refers to something that has been fully emptied or deserted. In this context, it conveys being unblemished or beautiful.
    “law’”: Means “more” or “greater.”
    So, the complete translation suggests agreement but emphasizes that the speaker is even more “chImta’” (beautiful or unblemished) than what was previously mentioned."

    45:13 The DS9 writers originally planned to do more Dominion stuff in the S4 premiere, but the higher-ups told them to do Klingons because they wanted to bring new viewers to the show and they thought Klingons were the best way to do that. Fortunately, DS9 does Klingon stuff very well, and obviously the Dominion threat is still present, so it all works out in the end.
    42:08 In previous episodes you've talked about liking the space battles in DS9, and to me all those barely qualify as battles. This episode has the first _real_ space battle of the show!
    40:44 When I think about DS9, my first thoughts are usually of season 5 or 6 (also true of _Buffy_ for me, btw). That doesn't necessarily mean that those are the "best" seasons; it's just what's most memorable _to me._ And obviously there are plenty of spectacular moments in other seasons (e.g., Improbable Cause / Die from S3, or even Duet from S1).

Remember, this is still an experimental craft, illegally using Romulan cloaking technology, some of the best torpedoes and phaser arrays and loaded to capacity against cloaked, veteran Klingons prepared for planetary conquest. The Defiant is a character of its own by this point in the series. Its engines are powerful enough and it is maneuverable enough that it can tear itself apart turning too intricately at extreme velocity.

    I remember when this premiered as a two-hour event. At the time, my dad claimed I was consuming too much TV and had restricted me to an hour and a half a day, so when he complained to me after the show ran longer than that, I insisted that it was only ninety minutes (which was technically true if you didn't include the commercials), and that seemed to confuse him and he left me alone to watch the rest in peace.
