While transposing on sight (sight transposing) is not something you'll encounter in, say, big band music, it's a very valuable skill and often mandatory at the professional level.

Your a great Dad, Bob
Sight transposition = call back gig. Sounding great on that link🔥
sight transposition is a great skill to learn
a real test to see how long you've been watching Bobs content is the first time you remember seeing his kids cause man...or man... on that metric ive been watching for a while now LOL
Still love the sound on that Link Supertone Master NY model. Love that sound!
Gotta admit, I dont give a flamingo about transposing, yet still tuned into this vid because your passion, dedication and discipline slap me across the face and inspire me to work harder to get to where I wanna be as a musician. For that I can’t thank you enough mate.
@@thomcowley7332 thank you, Thom 🙏
I always hear about playing stuff in all keys but for me, the ability that is making me improve a lot is trying to transcribe "as fast as i can". It makes me more and more concious about keys, grades... good video
Your kids are growing up so fast! Thanks for “vlogging” them. LOL Hats off to you for sight transposing. It is a challenging skill. Although looking up a whole step or down a minor third is not too,too bad, but STILL. I wouldn’t mind a few local gig outside my classical stuff, but I’m not going total pro, so ONE LESS THING! 😂 I love watching your practice/learning process. Thank you for sharing how you think and work. Sooooooo helpful! Keep on being a great husband and father. So glad you plan time to spend with the family. That is the most important thing in life. ❤
Your talent never ceases to amaze me!
Bob love your videos man thank you for sharing
Man the overtones you are getting when doing those long tones at 3:24 great....almost sounded like you were playing bag pipes
Man Bob, that thing about C and Bb parts on the same gig and transposing up Bb parts accidentally. 100 percent. Just give them all to me in either C or Bb!
Right?! LoL
I got a real kick out of this one as you are wrapping up. I too end up sight transposing everything, C concert or Bb parts. So frustrating when I forget what’s what😂
Otto link New York 🎷👍!!!))) Beautiful!))) Very good sound, Bob!!)
Hardest thing for me when it comes to sight transposition is dealing with complex key signatures or when there are lots of accidentals
Great insides . I will practice them .Nice weekend.
Transposing was something I really worked on a lot during my undergrad, a buddy of mine who was a graduate student at the time who had gone to Berklee got me working on it. As an alto player primarily , I’ve developed a pretty strong ability to transpose from C to Eb instruments, but I had a gig recently where I was asked to play tenor, and I was given concert pitch sheet music, and even though it’s probably considered by most to be an “easier” transposition, since I wasn’t as used to it, I had to think pretty hard on the gig haha!
Woooo Curtis Taylor!
What a great video Bob, greetings from Germany!
@@davidsmusic thank you, David
Bob, great video! Love your perspective and some of the challenges that happen along the way. It is encouraging and thought some of those struggles on the horn were unique to me. Were you playing a transcription at marker 5'30" or just improvising? Sounded good. Thanks! Tim
@@timwilson3109 improvising. Thanks Tim 🤙
Stetson! 🙌🏽
Try the Selmer metal ligature (402 I believe) on the Otto Link. It you may like it better. It's a definite upgrade over the stock Link lig.
@@LA-hx9tx I toggle between them. Def a more snug fit. Perhaps a touch more bright/zing. Still experimenting. Partly partial to the aesthetic of the original lig
@@bobreynolds True. I used the Selmer for years, mainly for louder gigs. But lately I’ve been working with my older Link lig (“T” model), and they are great if you like a really loose lig, and it encourages me to relax.
I know it's a little different but I write some of my of my parts for church. They change keys all the time. So I get this.😊
Getting a chart thats in Bb for tenor, then switches to C for the flute double midway through, then switches to Bb but this time clarinet, and meanwhile nobody told you to bring any of those instruments so you're playing an Eb horn and you gotta sight read it
The link definitely gives a different texture to your tone.
Which reeds brand/size are you using with Ottolink. *9?
@@T.Zaksophone currently 3M unfiled D’Addario Jazz Select
What are you playing at 3:11??
Will the album be available on streaming? Tidal?

She is the luckiest guitarist on earth. 😎
Great video and it was amazing meeting you last week!
@@kennethorr1146 thanks, Kenneth. You sounded wonderful! Keep it up. 🤙
You uss a digital or analog metronome?
digital tho i miss analogue... was actually contemplating getting old-school triangle with pendulum arm
Too bad you seemed to miss the Chris Potter concert in LA! It was great as you would imagine.
yeah i was outta town. bummed to miss it for sure
Sight Transposition: been there, done that, got the T-shirt-in alto, tenor, and soprano. Doesn't everybody?
"got the T-shirt" 😂
I did not get any T-shirt, should I start over?
Then transposing from Eb the transposing Bb charts to Eb and Eb charts to Bb then do it on a clarinet the work with singers who change keys all the time. Ugh 😩
😂
Oh man. It happens all the time to trombone players. "Sorry, I thought you played the same part as the tenor sax." "Oh. We just have an alto part." "The singer wants to play this a minor 3rd up." As for concert-key stuff, gotta read both bass and treble clefs. Growing up, the fake books were often only in concert-key treble clef, so it was easiest just to learn to read it straight up. So... young Skywalker: get fake books in different parts, and practice all of them. But if you have to take them to the gig, only take one type: no sense in making your life hard intentionally. I'm not even a pro, but an adult amateur who played in college and still plays around town. So I'd call it a "real-life" skill, rather than a "pro-level" skill. Full-time pro trombonists are about as rare as pro ventriloquists.
@@jorymil love this. Well said and fantastic advice.
As long as you don’t have to play both Eb and Bb saxes on same gig - reading concert key ……
@@EgilFurre yeah that’s a lot. I stick to Bb horns ☺️
