I Watched Superhero Movies NOT in English

- It's 2024 and Marvel and DC are past their prime. But what about superhero movies not in English? Let's see what South Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Italy and India have to offer!

Join me as I take a look at superhero movies not in the English language. Marvel and DC for sure are still producing good movies, but not nearly as many as they used to, with more duds than hits these days. But what about the rest of the world? The USA takes the spotlight as always with superhero pictures but dozens of countries have done their own comic book adaptations. In this video, I head to South Korea to look at their first superhero offering in a movie about an estranged father who develops telekinetic powers (Psychokinesis review). I then head to Indonesia to check out their own cinematic universe called the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe (Gundala review). Next is Hong Kong, as I look at an absolutely bonkers Michelle Yeoh film from 1993 (The Heroic Trio Review). Then, it's Italy. As they have a very serious and gritty take on the genre (They Call Me Jeeg review). Then I finish up with a visit to India. The home of Bollywood, as I take a look at Shah Rukh Khan's take on a superhero movie (Ra One review). This is one movie review after another, exploring foreign language cinema. 2024 superhero movies are surprisingly few and far between, so how about we look at South Korean movies or Indonesian movies or Italian movies or Hong Kong movies or even head to Bollywood to check out Indian movies. Join me as I review Psychokinesis korean movie, if you're looking for psychokinesis Netflix, then watch my review of it to see if its for you. Or maybe you're interested in ra one songs? Then check out the ra one trailer and watch my ra one review. They Call Me Jeeg trailer might interest you in my review of this Italian superhero movie of which I make comparisons to Joker and its sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. Or what about the heroic trio trailer, be sure to watch my reaction to the heroic trio scene. And then there's gundala trailer, which once watched, might intrigue you to watch my Gundala movie review and explore Indonesia superhero movie. I doubt any of these films will hit my top 10 movies 2024 or best movies of 2024 list, I whilst they're not the worst movies of all time, or the worst superhero movies ever, they're mostly mediocre and perhaps you're better off watching Iron Man, Batman, Spider-Man and Superman instead. Whilst not Superhero movies ranked, maybe Wolverine 2024 or Deadpool 3 might interest you more than these. Or even Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter and Blade.

Hey guys! Good to be back! I made an update video recently, so check that out if you have questions. New episode in the works, should be up mid-February! Stay tuned :)
Good to see our Usual Suspect again!
Hey I noticed at 0:32 you cut out some people that was in the Patreon version Was there any reason for that?
Hey Ross, it’s good to see you pumping out content again!
Ross, do you still have your Facebook page? I’d definitely like to DM you about projects I’m currently screenwriting
DO ONE FOR JAPAN.
It’s not really superhero fatigue that is the reason for marvel and other movies are failing it is manly bad movie fatigue and woke movie fatigue you know movies push forces go women agenda woke agenda and identity politics agenda and destroy franchise because the woke mob wants to push identity politics and woke agenda in movies
Truly one of the worst crimes of the Chinese government, denying Hong Kong the ability to make more films like “The Heroic Trio.”
One of my favourite superhero weaknesses is from my native Denmark's Duksedrengen (Teacher's Pet). He's from an old 80s miniseries and the only thing that stops his super strength and super intelligence is, drumroll please: Food Additives. He was once almost brought down by accepting a birthday invitation where the food the host served were sodapop and sausages, both with red food dye in them.
10 years ago I found your UA-cam channel, it's been a journey, I'm glad your reviews are back.
Glad you're back, suspect. For the algorithm🙏🙏
They aren't known as much for movies, but I would love a segment on the long history of Japanese super hero TV shows like Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Ultraman, etc. in a potential part 2. There are also newer movies based on them like Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider.
Yeah, I thought Toku would be an obvious subject for him to bring up considering how many Power Ranger videos he has made.
Toku are their own genre.
Never clicked so fast in my life! Glad to see you back! Glad you covered The Heroic Trio since I find it to be an underrated Hong Kong flick! I love it a lot but I understand why it wouldn’t be your cup of tea story wise. Guessing the budget is 15 Million. Edit: wow that is impressive for that budget!
But he didn't review the sequel!
4:30 15 years later, I finally understand why the ATLA character was called Bumi. That's such a good punny name.
Happy to see you back man!
Loving this newer style, and glad to see you back. Laughed a few times. :)
Honestly, I highly recommend checking out the movies "Shin Ultraman" and "Shin Kamen Rider"
Both are movies made by the directors 'Higuchi Shinji' and 'Anno Hideaki' both, who are famous for making Evangelion and Shin Godzilla
They're movies based on some of Japan's biggest pop culture icons
Shin Ultraman is about an alien who takes the form and life of a human who accidentally died in a skirmish that the alien himself got caught up in
So he has to learn how to work with humans and live among them out of a sense of guilt and responsibility.
Shin Kamen Rider is about a man named 'Hongo Takeshi' who was abducted by a cult and turned into a super-human cyborg in the hopes he would become one of their super soldiers (Think Hydra but more of a religious cult) and whilst Hongo is broken out just in time before the brainwashing, he has to work with Ruriko, his superior, in order to survive and face the terrorist organisation known as 'SHOCKER'
Both of these films are bloody brilliant and I regard them as some of, if not, my favourite movies of all time
Great analysis and great insight into what superhero films made in other countries. Excellent work Suspect 👍🏻
Subbed yesterday when you announced the transition, clicked this video the second it showed up in my home page.
Welcome back, Ross! I hope this channel grows and prospers with the new your new format ideas.
Thanks so much!
He is back, and better than ever ❤️
Good to see you back Suspect, can't wait for your next review!
I honestly feel good every time I see a review from you. One of the few youtubers I’ve been loving for years
So happy to have you back, dude! Great job as always. I hope if you make more superhero-related videos in the future you could talk about something rather interesting I've noticed, namely that directors who got their start in the horror genre tend to be the most qualified people to make superhero movies (Sam Raimi, James Wan, Wes Craven, Guillermo de Toro, etc.). I think it would be a fun thing to talk about.
Yeah, there's a surprising amount of those guys. It's funny to me, cos Evil Dead and Spider-Man couldn't be further apart thematically. Guess it proves how good Raimi's thematic range is.
@@Suspect_Green there's also Peter Jackson, y'know the 'Lord of the Rings' director? I was watching 'Braindead' again after seeing it as a Kid, and I said to myself, "I wonder who directed this movie", I looked it up, and to my surprise it was Peter Jackson! Granted it was his 3rd movie he directed but the 1st he did was a horror comedy called 'Bad Taste'. I can see why he was perfect to direct the 'Lord of the Rings' the guy has crazy direction skills lol 🤣
That was pretty much a long list of things you might not know about, and summing each separately up as "doesn't work for anyobdy as insular as me, who needs everything from Thor to Son Goku to be 'localized' for Western audiences".
I can tell with almost every point, and no doubt also the ones I can't tell, are just ways of storytelling that are more common in cultures with no school stabbings adn shootings.
You know, cultures where more than ONE language schools are federally funded, because populations are actually native or half decent speakers of more than one langage. Visual semiotics could be the place to start learning, to at least get what these films are saying. Even better, since English failed to invent a written form you actually need some basic Latin to learn how to pronounce Latin letters correctly. That used to be standard EVER SINCE English high schools were higher academics than kindergarden.
I'm so happy that you are back
Good to be back!
The return of the suspect!!!! I
Am so happy to see you do reviews again. I really enjoy your style and comedy. In my eyes it's very unique
I’ve seen Gundala and I thought it was pretty good. Need to check out the others
I really wanted to like that film, cos it had a look of good in it. Intrigued to see the other BCU movies though.
They have competitor named satria dewa cinematic universes, make satria dewa: gatot kaca(different than original costume)
Bcu make a seriel name tira(maybe like ms marvel, young girl be hero.)
A fascinating glimpse at what's out there.
Welcome back!
I have a suggestion for another foreign superhero movie, but it’s actually a TV show from South Korea called moving i really recommend it! it’s pretty dark and interesting in the fight scenes are brutal give it a go! Good to have you back mate
Glad you are back 😊
I’ve already seen this video twice…
I think that’s a really high compliment for how enjoyable it is. Well done Suspect
Great to have you back! I was a bit sceptical about the new Concept you announced, but I had a lot of fun, eager for more :)
Great to see you doing reviews again
Awesome to see you back! I have to admit, some of these films look fun to watch like Psychokinesis, Gundala and The Heroic Trio (though that last one is just to experience the insanity of it.)
So happy to see a new video from you.
Happy to see you guys as well! Feels good to be back :)
I am so happy you're back! Been watching for about ten years and I always get so excited when you post. This was a cool video and I can't wait for more!
Man, I missed this. Great comeback, Ross! Stay the course! 👍
glad to see you're back. your videos are always entertaining to watch
It's just good to have you back, suspect. It made me so happy to see that update video yesterday, my birthday present came one month early.
We also have a superhero movie in Chile called "Mirageman", it's from 2007. The lead doesn't have any powers, but he's a martial artist, and it can be quite fun, if you decide to do a part 2
Ooh; didn't know Chile had one! Yeah, will check that out for sure if I do a part 2; thanks for sharing! :)
GLAD TO SEE YOU BACK!!!!
Happy to see more reviews
Happy to be back :)
Always a treat to see a new video from you, Suspect!
Been watching since 2013 really glad you're back!!
Good to see you back, Suspect.
Glad to see you back man, needed this with the new job keeping me on my feet 80% of the day
Oof; that's sounds like a lot of work! Wishing you the best!
this was awesome. nj suspect!
Love seeing you back, brother. Can't wait to see more content.
Thanks Matt!
Yeah, John Carter had sooo much potential.
Number one: market this as the story that birthed all other action stories for 100 years.
Number two: call it John Carter and the Princess of Mars.
Number three: Dejah Thoris needs to have infinite chemistry with John Carter, and though the actors are serviceable it’s just…not enough. These characters are the original archetypes of the space fantasy princess and hero.
I don’t get it, the budget was soooo much, yet they drop the ball from the start. Just go all in on pumping this story as the ultimate OG, the source of all action adventure.
Such a great video! As a Long time viewer, it’s great to have you back and thriving Suspect! Always loved the reviews! Can’t wait to see more
I’m so happy your back. Hopefully with this new format, I hope we see the return of MCU reviews like Phase 1 since it’s multiple movies, or even Sci Fi movies nobody has heard of
Oh it is so refreshing to have a New Suspect video. I feel like I'm seeing an old friend I haven't met in years
I’ll miss your old style of reviews, but this new format kicks arse too. Great to have you back Suspect 😎
Great new format Suspect! Been a fan for years, and this new direction sure has plenty of promise! 😊
I definitely reckon Cutie Honey (Japan) warrants inclusion here!
3:47 Just like the Raimiverse and Snyderverse trilogies honestly, might very well be worth watching!
Intesresting and great fun, thanks!
It’s amazing to see that you’re still at it, Suspect. 👌🏾
Thanks! But that makes me feel old, haha :)
Good to see you uploading again Suspect love the new review method and your videos still funny AF keep up the work :)
Great video Suspect, notifications: ON!
Always a good day when the Suspect comes out to play and give great insight and wit to boot.
Great video! Welcome back!
😁
glad you're back, hopefully you will have more views and opportunities to talk about movies. Congrats on becoming an editor for big youtube channels
Welcome back. Yeah more would be cool. This was really a small tease of what the globe has for superhero films.
He's back!!!!! Let's go!!!!
Yay! So happy to be back!
@@Suspect_Green I unfortunately only discovered you after the Toy Story review and I am a tad upset that that style of reviews is long gone but I look forward to everything else you have coming up.
Great video, Suspect. Been a fan for your content around ten years, and you still got good comedy and movie ideas altogether 😂 Good to have you back and I can't wait for the next video. Cheers ✌
Thanks so much!
I have missed your content quite a bit. I am excited to see where this goes, because after your Box Office Bombs vid, I have wondered if this format could have a future.
When guessing Gundala's budget, I said "Ten million".
Answer was two million, Pepsi almost went out of my nose. Shocked me like crazy.
Love the "not another one!" soundbite.... that news interview clip is iconic!
Haha; was wondering if anybody would spot that :)
Great video! I've seen Psychokinesis. Never heard of the others. I might check some of them out.
Psychokinesis is the best of the 5. It's the only one I can call "good". Ra.One and Heroic Trio are goofy, but fun enough to give a watch. Skip Gundala and They Call Me Jeeg.
@@Suspect_Green Got it. Thanks for the advice.
If you're looking for a foreign superhero(ish) film with a little bit of everything in it, I'd highly recommend giving RRR (2022) a watch. It's more of a fictional retelling of the stories of two Indian revolutionaries but you can honestly not watch it and say the main characters aren't basically superheroes. It's filmed in Telugu and is therefore, Tollywood (not to be confused with Bollywood)
Ahh; always assumed that was a bollywood picture. Whoops. Good to know, thanks!
Hey dude great to see you back. You were actually one of my inspirations back in the day when I first created my youtube channel. So to see you back makes me happy to see. You make great videos and I'm glad you are making reviews again. I've been a fan since your Die Another Day review. Man how time flies. Anyway good to see you back. Out of curiosity have you considered doing livestreams? Thanks!
I kind of enjoy this more than the first broad review you did with the box office bombs. But yeah, love your work

Great video, been watching your stuff for like a decade or so, subbed to this channel in a heartbeat and I'm not disappointed
As a bit of a trivia, on the topic of foreign superhero films made in the 20th century there's another even earlier one - Hydrozagadka made in 1971. It's Polish parody of Superman comics and cult classic in Poland but between numerous puns and jabs at the reality of life in a communist country, it doesn't really translate well to audiences that aren't Polish
That spinning motorcycle in the air part me laugh so damn much.
SUGGESTION: foreign film companies takes on popular American superheroes, just look at Japan's Spider-Man, the show is a joy to watch and I swear if we don't see leopardon in beyond the spider verse i will be disappointed, also '3 dev adam' from Türkiye it has captain America and features Spider-Man as a villain who has the ability to clone himself. I'm sure there are plenty more out there.
Return of the King!
What's funny is yesterday, I thought, 'I wonder how Suspect is getting on? ' as I was scrolling through UA-cam with a cold stuck in bed. Then 20 minutes later we got the Big Update video and now this one!
Thank you Suspect 🙏
Good to be back!
Nice to have you back. If you do part 2 any chance that you cover Rendel, a Finnish movie?
They Call Me Jeeg is one of my favourite films!
If you want to watch an MCU knock off, this isn't it.
It's painfully realistic and the main character is not supposed to be a likable one.
As for the redemption arc, it's not coming too late, as it was not supposed to be completed in this film.
Instead, it only gives you a glimmer of hope that the main hero might turn up being a decent human being in the future, motivated by his failures and shortcomings in this film.
I always felt there should be at least one sequel...
Missed you
Suspect is back
So glad to see you back man! I haven't even seen a list before for foreign superhero films
You know considering we are in a superhero fatigue, there is talk about what's going to happen next with hollywood.
Maybe you should make a video called 10 predictions for the future of cinema, assuming you have 10 lol
I actually have thought out making a future predictions video. They'll inevitably make you look like a fool when you end up inevitably wrong, but they're fun to do :)
@@Suspect_GreenTrue, it would still be fun anyways but there's always that risk of doing essentially another Star Wars 7 prediction 😂
Nice video like it
Thanks! :D
@@Suspect_Green I got an idea for your next video. Is a type of movie you haven't even tackled in your original channel or this one
13:29-13:47 if Marvel ever did that in a Shang Chi sequel (if and when we’ll get one) then we can say where they got their inspiration from
Welcome back, Suspect!!
Quick question, will we ever see the character of Bob return in a future video like this?
Woooooo Ra One I love it
Great vid as always, if you're planning on a foreign antihero vid I have a suggestion RENDEL
Yeah; haven't seen that one yet; looks interesting. Hope this video does well enough to warrant a sequel. It'll give me a good excuse to check it out :)
Glad you're back.
Physchokenisis looks worth checking out even if a couple of points remind me of Spiderman 3 (not nessasarly a bad thing mind)
Yeah, totally worth a watch if you have netflix. Oh, and the Spidey 3 comparisons end with the meteor. I don't think anything else is alike.
@@Suspect_Green it was that & the tonal whiplash within the same scene reminded me of the dance club scene from 3
I feel a need for part 2
Yeah, there's tons more to look at. Hope this video does well. If it does, I'll definitely make a part 2 :)
Bumi/Langit also translates to “Earth/Sky”.
He hath returned!
Mr India (starring Anil Kapoor from Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Amrish Puri from Temple of Doom) is really great. Watch that if you haven't
Oooh; adding that to the watch list.
Watch minnal murali is the best indian super hero movie. You love the villian more than hero. Budget 3 million
It’s funny because not so long ago I watched a pair of foreign language Superhero films. They were 'How I became a Superhero' from France and Major Grom: Plague Doctor from Russia. The former is incredibly forgettable, it’s more of a cop drama with a twist halfway through that the main character has super powers (and is trying his best to avoid using them). Major Grom is more in line with what you would expect from DC or Marvel (very like a Batman movie in fact, if Batman were a maverick cop who doesn’t follow the rules), pretty fun action and visuals and thus a lot more memorable than 'How I Became a Superhero'.
You should check out a movie called Russias "Guardians" it has a winter soldier, a were bear with a mini gun, invisible Woman and some other crazyiness.
Yeah, that was one that caught my eye! Definitely will look at that one in a part 2 (if this video does well enough).
@@Suspect_Green can't wait for your LOTR video. This format is fantastic!
I loved the Guardians movie. The anti-hero Hardcore Henry was even more fun.
My biggest problem with super hero films, at least here in the US, is the companies are so OBSESSED with everything either being a multiverse or a connected universe that they leave no room for independent stories of their own that can actually establish their own tone that doesn't have to fall in line with another movie because they all 'share a universe'. This is why going out beyong Marvel and DC is such a good thing because you can see that super hero movies are thriving in other places and you start to understand WHY.
The problem with current Marvel and DC is that they're helmed by people who really DON'T get the comics because if they did, they'd understand why tone and variety is important and you can't force a format onto something that doesn't gel with it right.
The interconnected universe thing was Marvel's main selling point fron Ironman onward, and it was supposed to mirror tge interconnectedness of the comic books. Before that superhero movies were all self-contained in their own universes.
I wouldn't say that I have superhero fatigue (I'd say more I have cinematic universe fatigue honestly), I still love superheroes and superhero movies as much as I have in the past and will continue to, I just wish superhero movies and shows would take a artistically unique approach and execution, if I was to make an analogy, I would say that most superhero movies nowadays are like fast food, they give you a brief moment of mild enjoyment but it doesn't stay with you long after it's over, and like fast food, too much of it and you'll get sick of it. Some of my favorite superhero movies are the ones that stay with me long after experiencing them that offer something more unique and unconventional. Think of it like a good meal at a good restaurant that you really like (I'm not talking about something super classy highbrow btw), that the experience of going to and eating there stays with you and makes you look forward to your next visit, I just more superheroes movies were brave enough to do something along those lines.
I would love to see you talk about the Japanese Spider-Man show that inspired the power rangers! Where was he in No Way Home? Great video & can't wait for more!
if you continue with this i would love to see you cover some japanese Tokusatsu superhero films like the recent Shin Kamen Rider & Shin Ultraman.
Great to see the suspect back in form!
Russian movies "The Guardians" and "Hardcore Henry" are both a lot of fun. The latter has a perspective that takes a minute to get used to, but once you have the stunt work is mind-blowing.
NEW SUSPECT VIDEO
Good to be back!
Wanna see some self-serious so-bad-it's-good superhero film? Try the uruguayan film "El Noctámbulo".
Heroic Trio is fun, and energetic. I watched it entirely by accident and fell in love with it. You're right, it's quite silly at times, but it does have its serious moments.
Great video, reviewing some foreign language superhero films. I have watched The Heroic Trio, afew times & love it. theres three I would to recommend. HK: Forbidden Superhero from 2014. its 2016 sequel, Hentai Kamen: Abnormal Crisis & one called, Guardians from 2017. :)
Its REALLY great to finally see you back to making content again but by the time I got to the Jeeg Chapter here, it makes me question if its worth returning jf its in exchange of being so heavily censored for the sake of ad revenue.
It makes me wish the uncensored version was put on the Unusual Suspect channel as well so that would still get some use. But besides that, it's still great finally seeing you back online again.
Patreon version is uncensored. Apologies, I didn't realize how much I swore in this video until I edited it. Thinking of toning it down in the next one so I don't have to censor it so much.
@@Suspect_Green Considering how many of the bleeps were stuff that WEREN'T swears to begin with, it really wouldn't be all that necessary to begin with. I mean with one of the films having such adult scene in them you'd think that we the viewers would be treated as such. But that's not your fault at all there, it's just all UA-cam as usual.🙄
The amount of swearing is perfectly fine but like I said, having the Unusual Suspect channel be the home for the uncensored versions as well as on Patron would be more sensible for the lot of us. Especially since UA-cam made it impossible for that to stay monetized... which is unfortunate but still.
Heroic Trio/Executioners is amazing!
The Return of the King
