(There is a jump cut now and this is about that) 1) Never flip your filters, use them in a single direction because flipping them can cause previously locked particles to loosen. 2) If you want to airbrush enamels, solvents, or harsher things than acrylic paint, use a HEPA-grade filter in your mask and air booth the best protection, Thanks everyone for reaching out to me in the comments and helping me learn!

Bought a house so just spray airbrush or rattle can into a cardboard box and vacuum up the dried paint later while wondering why I feel so buzzed off just 1 beer.
I moved into an unfurnished apartment last year and bought a second hand coffee table in which I placed all my paints, brushes and the minis I’m currently painting. I have a cutting mat that I use to protect the table when I paint, but due to using an airbrush, some of the paint got on the table. I remember that the first time this happened, I was thinking “man…the landlord is gonna be mad” Then I remembered that it was my table 😁
Important!! Don’t flip your filters. You should only ever use them in one orientation. Also if you ducted the one from the airbrush booth so it used more surface area a bit instead of just taping it direct, you’d get loads more use out of it.
@@lovedeathdice They're designed to catch stuff on their high surface area and it mostly stays stuck to that side. They are stacked in a specific order as well usually so bigger particles will be caught before smaller ones. If you reverse them they become less effective (if they're ordered, not all are). When you flip them it can push some of that back into the atmosphere with the air going in the other direction, most HEPA filters have an arrow showing direction of flow. :)

I'm fairly new to all this. Could someone explain to me why you need a spraybooth for spray cans if youre doing it outside already? Can't you just use some newspaper in a box so you don't cover the balcony in paint? I understand the fan part, but is there a health risk in using spray cans outside (with a respirator)? Thanks!
If your balcony gets plenty of airflow and is pointed towards the street or something you can easily just prime out in the open. My balcony faces other people and there is next to no airflow, so the paint just sits in the area with me. Because of this partially dried paint particles stick to the wet paint of my model and give it a gritty texture - not great. That way a spray booth sucking in all those particles is critical for me.
I use a bucket with water, my airbrush booth is connected to this bucket the water absorbs most of the fumes, I also put some scent on the water so smells good.
This is the correct method if you cant vent the booth air to the outside, water in the bucket catches almost all the paint particles and then a simple carbon filter before the holes in the bucket lid will make sure no smell gets out.
@@RelightLowlight standard home depot white bucket with lid... fill about 4 to 6 inches water connect exhaust hose to top of lid, use silicon to do this, you first need to cut hole to fit vent hose in lid push that hose down half way in bucket above the water not touching water. on lid drill 6 to 8 1 inch holes around vent hose this is so the pressure is equal inside and out side use aquarium grade filter to p;lace on top of lid covering those holes, you can sent the water if you want... yt has several videos showing how to make this. this system is what the pros use....
The best thing for indoor airbrushing/spraying, is to purchase a Bench VentBV260 Recirculating Desk top spray booth. They aren’t cheap, however you’ll only purchase once (except for replacement filters) it’ll look after your lungs and room for life! Btw, I don’t work for these guys, just blown away by the product, build quality and service👍
If you dont have access to a window you could also try hooking your booth up to a indoor dryer vent (and put the merv filter inside of it) so you dont have the spraybooth air blasting right into your room.
Hello I’m curious are you using the dryer vent method? I just use water based paints but still don’t want to smell the fumes. Do you empty the water every day?

I would still recommend it or at least do it outside. Since it's cosplay you're using more paint than us miniature painters and I feel it's crucial to not breathe all that in.
When I'm priming dozens of minis at once, rattle cans are just faster and good enough. I'm talking 80 models that need priming. If its a squad or a single model, the airbrush is the move.

A MERV filter does NOT filter anything besides the paint particles, so if you're using anything other than water based acrylic, its nearly useless. Also, thats not how you wear that respirator, nor is your filter good enough for harmful aerosolized paint.

MERV filters do NOT filter VOCs. lacquer and Enamel paint OFTEN contain carcinogenic materials, that's why we use vents, and why they need to be efficient. You are giving people false information implying that your paint setup is anywhere near effective enough for MOST hobby paints. Yours is only sufficient for water-based acrylics. Actually understand the things you're talking about and stop giving people "advice" that will lead to them giving themselves cancer. Your room air purifier likely helps, but it still pulls it past YOU. You didnt even know not to flip the filter, you think you should be telling people how to avoid cancer causing compounds?

Do you have any tips for wearing glasses while using a respirator? I use a thick rimmed square pair because it's the only type that fit around the mask, but I can only paint for about an hour and a half before it becomes too painful to keep working.
I feel your pain, I try and mount my glasses on the outside of the mask to take pressure off my nose and ears, I'm sure you've tried that though.
