      Thanks for watching my friend, glad you enjoyed the video. I'm editing the next video now... it's about how I was wrong when it comes to paint guns hahaha. Anyway, watch for that one.
      Send me some pictures of your guitars, I'd love to see them.
      Thanks again.

    Wow, Matt, fantastic.... Looking forward to more. I am a little hesitant about going away from NC for my top coats (in no part because I have about 4 gallons of Mohawk on the shelf), but def going to start with this sealer. I am going to call them on Monday and talk to them. Keep it coming, I am learning a ton. You guitar guys are a great knowledge resource for me. Mark

      Hi Mark, Thanks for watching.
      Like I said I was a hold out for lacquer for many years. Now that we have switched to modern urethane I'm never looking back. My hat is off to people who can get nitro to look perfect every time.
      Have a great weekend amigo.

      Thanks Steve, that guitar was one of more popular ones. We sold the guitar and had to get it back for a photo shoot in a local magazine Christmas gift guide hahaha we didn't sell any guitars from the exposure but it was nice to be on the team...www.5280.com/2017/10/the-ultimate-colorado-holiday-gift-guide-2017-edition/

    good video, im glad youre using poly as a base coat and eurethane on top, theres so many myths about nc, its the most sensible way to go. thin poly , sand back then top coat.no need for grain filler etc.back in in the eighties we use to grain fill then all the way with polyeurethane( long proces) and after time it eventually sinks into the grain.we changed to light poly base then polyeurethane on top with no difference in tone. and the finishes still look great 35 years later.

      Yeah I hear ya, We were some of the biggest lacquer weenies until we tried the modern paints... I guess they aren't really than modern anymore hahaha
      It's so much easier to get the kind of results that people expect. I'll never go back to lacquer

    When using Simtec sanding sealer, what is used to clean spray equipment, if it’s in one of the videos, I can’t find it.😢

    Nice shirt! I just picked one up last week for $3 out of my pocket. Had a $10 off Amazon coupon for using the Amazon app for the 1st time and a $10 gift card. Bam! $3 for a shirt. I snatched that up quickly 😆

    My normal process after building up the lacquer was final hand polishing with micromesh down to 1-3 micron. I am interested in seeing how you do it with buffing w/o it looking plastic. I am competing in galleries with glass and ceramic art.

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  7 років тому

      Well... it is plastic so if you want it to look like glass you can :)
      You can also go with a satin finish that is cool too.

    When finishing with modern paints have you ever used the stewmac solid pigment for your solid colors ? Wondering if it would be compatible with urethanes

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  7 років тому +1

      Hi jsalinas, I have not tried the solid color pigment yet... though we have talked about using it before. It would probably be fine if you used it with the DBC-500.
      Unlike lacquer the modern paints come in a dizzying array of colors that are really easy to get so mixing our own opaque paints has never been something we needed to do. I do have a bunch of that StewMac solid pigment stuff though I don't know what I'll do with it.
      Thanks for watching

    Great stuff. What Solild colors do you use over polyester ez sealer? Urethane? And after that, hour dry out, followed by polyester topcoat, or is the process different then automotive? Thanks!

    For those of us without a paint booth, can this sealer be hand painted in thin coats and sanded back?

  • @markkauder1288
    @markkauder1288 7 років тому

    Matt, I grew up in an autobody shop, sanding primer, and eventually learning to paint with NC. So doing wood was a small transition. How/where did you learn the transition to Poly (the dos/don'ts)? Simple things like what to use to clean the gun and how, after using a catalyzed finish? I really want to move this direction, but it is scaring me to death.......... Thanks.

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  7 років тому +1

      Hi Mark,
      We just sorta jumped right in. Of course we were encouraged to do so by painter extraordinaire Mike Learn. We also spent a lot of time talking with the people at our local Finish Master, they were able to offer lots of help with stuff like clean up etc.
      I would say that if you can spray lacquer with decent results you should be more than qualified to spray the new paints.
      If there is one thing I would point out it would be that modern paints have way more... paint than solvent when compared to nitro. So, it is possible to go a little heavy handed at first. I'll be doing more finishing videos that might answer more questions (I'm sure they will also raise new ones too) I hope you tune in for those and let me know your own experiences with paints as well.
      Stay cool amigo

    Hey Matt!!
    Have you ever tried a leather topped guitar? I want to try it and see how it works but Im just wondering if you've ever done it...

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  7 років тому +1

      Hi c ef,
      I have not tried that but it sounds pretty cool. How are you planning on moving forward? Are you going to glue or attach the leather to the wood or maybe make leather pieces and sew them on (like that Waylon Jennings Telecaster)? Maybe something different?
      I know there is a lot of cool embossed leather as well that would make for a cool guitar too.
      I did some messing around with leather pickguards and I liked those pretty well. There was this old school guy Gatemouth Brown who said that every guitar should have a leather pickguard.
      Let me know what you come up with, I'd love to see it.
      Thanks for watching, have a great weekend.

    • @c.e.f4916
      @c.e.f4916 7 років тому

      Well my original idea was to glue it on. However I recently got the idea to make the guitar a semi acoustic with a stretched/tight leather top. Of course though the leather would have to be reasonably thick in order to still hold pickups. I'm not sure what ill do but I think I'm gonna go down the semi acoustic route. Maybe but just MAYBE I'll put studs on it to make it more metal.......

    Can I ask Matt the fabric you use on your guitars, are there any type that work best? Like cotton or synthetic I'm just thinking if the resin may dissolve a type of man made material? Am I overthinking it? I'd like to give one a go that Jazzmaster body looks so cool! thanks for the great videos!

  • @DTM-ch7jy

    Hi Matt;
    After spraying the Sanding Sealer do you recommend or is it necessary to spray on a primer before the color coat?

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  7 років тому +1

      Hi DTM,
      Great question, sometimes we do but most times we don't. The solid colors we use go on pretty well and we don't have issues with coverage. Some of the metallic colors do need a base coat...especially golds. If you are spraying metal flake the base coat will make the flakes look different too. Sometimes we do a black base for flake or match the base color to the flake. There are lots of videos about flake and it is really cool to work with, messy but cool.
      Thanks for watching

    Matt, I'm refinishing a fernandes revolver. I've been sanding for days! Is there a better way to remove the paint? What's the best way to remove the paint in the channels(can't think of any other name for it) I tried a heat gun but that's slow then death...I'm using 40 grit with my 5" bosch variable sander. I was going to use the da sander but then the compressor runs forever and the noise pisses me off after awhile. After I get it down to the wood, going to use the simtech sealer...but which one? Black, Gray, Clear? It is going to be a solid color, House of kolor kbc10 purple kandy with either a black base or silver can't decide..)

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  6 років тому +1

      Hi Alan, I wouldn't worry about getting all the paint off of that body. The Simtec sealer is really sticky and what we do is scuff back the factory top coat and shoot it with Simtec. We use the EZ Sanding Sealer... it is clear.
      Sounds like a cool guitar. send me some pictures when you are finished

      Texas Toast Guitars Matt so if I add 1% mekp I have 40 mins of spray time..that's what it says on the can but will it harden as the normal 2% mekp?

      I'm not sure but I do know that you can mx it pretty hot. I is a chemical reaction so even a little goes a long way. I always let it set up for about a week, let it cook... you know.
      Experiment a little and see what you come up with.

    What's up Matt!
    I just stumbled upon your channel after discovering fabric top guitars and I'm aching to build one now! I've gotta say, you've become one of my favorite channels within a couple of minutes :D
    Now, I wonder what kind of finish you apply for the fabric tops after the sealer? Do you add some sort of clear coat to it? I live overseas so most I can't get my hands on all of your name brand stuff, but I might find a European equivalent.
    Keep making the badass videos!
    Kindest regards, Vincent

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  6 років тому

      Hi Vincent,
      Thanks for watching the videos, I'm glad to hear you are enjoying them. Fabric tops are really cool you will have a blast making yours. Be sure to send pics.
      We do use a clear coat over the tops of the sealer. Right now we use PPG Production Clear (it is basically automotive top coat). It should be pretty straight forward for you to source something, at least, as good. We used to use lacquer but have become converts to the new paints. If you can find a local auto paint supply in your area they will be able to get you pointed in the right direction.
      Stay cool brotherman
      Matt
