    Mr. Rosdahl thank you for this channel. I'm an old guy who loves to bowl and being lefty it gives me a better perspective watching you throw it. I know myself and others appreciate your knowledge and expertise on the varying subjects related to bowling and this review was exactly what I expect from you.....thorough and entertaining as I learn from you throwing it and the explanations that follow. Thank you.

    Ball looks like its gonna see a lot of play. And thanks for addressing a lot of the urethane misconceptions. I throw my purple hammer a lot. Just because our local backends are really sharp. Can attest even with my 460+ rpms and a strong drilling the thing barely flares. Its the guys with the wrong layout and stuff not flaring making carrydown. All that said this new iq is gonna be a great tool for a lot of people.

      Sorry but we're actually not getting that one! They don't send us Global balls, so we only buy the ones we're interested in, and I've already got way too many ReX balls to want to jam another one in there. Really can't justify getting stuff just to make a video for, and if they're not interested in sending us the balls, I'm really not interested in paying them to advertise their product.

    Enjoyed the video. I really value your opinion on all the ball reviews you do. I keep thinking about getting a urethane bowling ball. Because the lanes I bowl on are old synthetic lanes. With a ton of friction on the backend. And pretty dry from the 10 board to the gutter. Would appreciate your help with this matter. And which ball. Thanks for all you do

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  4 місяці тому +1

      Well urethane isn't really for dry lanes, people try to use it on dry lanes just because it's smooth, but it's designed to be really early too. I think Hammer's Nu Blue would be the best answer, because it's more versatile, it flares some so it's not going to create carrydown, and you can ride the line between being urethane with some surface, or acting like a weaker reactive ball with some shine. This one needs to be kept in front of you, it doesn't like angle at all, so if it's dry from 10 to the gutter on your shot, you're going to have to swing it some and this one won't work for that.

  • @pauledelstein5297
    @pauledelstein5297 7 місяців тому +2

    Good adjustment on Angels set up. I would think because her natural style is a bit more spinny at the lay down point, she is probably not a great fit for what urethane is trying to do inherently which of course is read the lane early and often. With that said the adjustments did her and the ball more justice. 👏🏽

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  7 місяців тому +2

      Yeah she's unfortunately gotten more spinny lately too. We're getting older and have desk jobs and not a lot of time to practice, so just getting harder to keep the hand behind the ball. The adjustments did help a lot and sometimes we're working on stuff while we're shooting videos just because we have no other time to do it, or it just takes that long to warm up lol!

    Urethane does cause carry down if not wiped off as well. Which in league I see many bowlers use urethane, even with a stronger core, that don’t wipe the ball off and the oil is pushed onto the backends. Urethane covers do not absorb oil anywhere near the rate of reactive covers as you know.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  7 місяців тому +1

      But it doesn't, because if you don't wipe the ball off, the part of the ball with the oil on it just touches the part of the lane with oil on it. Once the ball hits the backend, there's no oil to pick up, so the part of the ball that touches the lane on the backend won't have any oil on it to put back on the lane, so it won't create any more carry down than a reactive ball would. Balls that flare just can't cause carrydown, regardless of the cover or absorption rate.

    It makes me wonder if Storm did an IQ test to make it a 78 hardness for this ball? I have thought of getting it because I'm a guy who like urethane because my speed is high so I'm looking a ball that doesn't effect the 78 harness rule. Great video Luke, I hope you an Angel had a good Thanksgiving.

    Question, why have there not been more asym Urethane balls similar to the UC3 been developed? Would it be counterintuitive?

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  7 місяців тому +4

      People largely don't understand them, and there have been mixed results. The UC3 was great, just not with surface on it, and it wasn't really urethane, it was "urethane-like." The Hot Cell several years ago was basically an asymmetric version of this, it was INSANELY early and then never did anything down lane.

    If you're considering doing additional videos with this, I think it would be neat to see this compared to a short pin DNA or Summit (or whatever the best comparison would be). There's a whole conversation about how short pin reactive > urethane because Mikey Pinel said so. It would be cool to see someone take a more scientific approach to it.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  7 місяців тому +2

      Eh, it'd be no contest on the left side. Short pins look awful for lefties because there's less track friction so everything looks sharp on the left side. Jesper can get a Pitch Black to "snap" and Butters can hook the whole lane with a purple, etc. I've drilled a couple short pins lefty and they look teeeerrrible because they want to be reactive but they also want to not do anything, so the core and layout fights the cover the whole time. I appreciate that you want me specifically to do this, it just in this case wouldn't be fair. If I was still righty, sure, would probably think about it. Lefty? I'd end up with a boat anchor if I short pinned a reactive ball and I really don't want to burn a ball for a video.

    Luke. Did you see the video that JR posted? About how usbc did another study recently about how they did a footprint with varying hardness on urethane. The change they said was like 4 human hairs in change. I forgot the actual number I think it was like. 008 or something like that. It was interesting to check out and read.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  7 місяців тому +2

      That wasn't the greatest study, they didn't use anything under 73 hardness, and that's where stuff really changes. Sure 73 vs 80 hardness doesn't change much but under 73 it gets crazy. Usbc basically manipulated the study to get the results they wanted.

    • @Matt_Holcomb
      @Matt_Holcomb 7 місяців тому +1

      @LukeRosdahl very true. I think they are just overthinking the issue and creating more headache than needed. But this upcoming season. Maybe we will see a difference in qualifiers on TV events.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  7 місяців тому +1

      Eh, if you watch that video I linked in the description, it's incredibly eye opening. I don't think they're overthinking the issue at all when you actually see a real objective study.
      That said, I think the Nu Blue is actually better than the Purple, and the jury is still out on this one. I think the gap between B7 staffers and ours got widened if anything as far as the urethane game goes. This one will absolutely be better than the Pitch Black in a limited number of situations, I'm just not sure they're going to be able to trick it enough with layouts, OR our urethane using staffers are going to have to carry around 9 of these at all times.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  7 місяців тому

      Not if it flares. Again, if the part of the ball with the oil on it never touches the lane again, how can it cause carrydown? Don't you always wipe oil off balls that absorb oil anyway? Even stuff that absorbs doesn't pull it in that quickly, so if you don't wipe the ball off before throwing it next, it's going to still have almost as much oil on it as a urethane ball will.

    • @enigmazero8624
      @enigmazero8624 7 місяців тому +1

      @@LukeRosdahl well I certainly wipe the ball off every time, but others don’t. I just envision a very low flaring urethane ball not being wiped off must create SOME carrydown eventually.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  7 місяців тому

      @@enigmazero8624 Well yes, a low flaring urethane ball would cause carrydown, but so would a low flaring reactive ball. Reactive balls still have oil on them when they get back, they don't absorb it in the tenth of a second before it makes another rotation.
      Flare amount is the only thing that creates carrydown, it's just that traditional urethane typically has weaker/lower flaring cores in them, so traditional urethane balls in general got fairly and accurately associated with carrydown, BUT people have mistakenly associated a urethane cover itself with carrydown. A Black Widow Urethane for example doesn't create carrydown because it flares like a Black Widow, same goes for the Hot Cell, etc.
      Again, the easiest way I've found to explain it is that if the ball flares, meaning fresh cover is exposed to the lane on every rotation, how's it going to put any oil back onto the lane on the backend if fresh cover is constantly hitting the lane?

I’m probably getting a phase 2, but eventually for that third ball in the bag I’m debating between a traditional spare ball, urethane ball or pearl or big asymmetrical. can you please give me a link so I can read the rules more why the PBA made this change now I’m still technically “” a beginner bowler. This is just my opinion only a bowling ball is a bowling ball it’s not an actual weapon how can you have the ilegal bowling balls, that’s what I don’t understand me that’s simply politics. also, could you may please do more of an in-depth review of this ball versus the IQ tour solid, which is mine that I have currently I know you did a little bit of this video versus the ruby which I might get also in the future because they have the exact same foundation except the cover. Plus, could you have all three in the bag to make it like a family “” of the IQ tour series?

      I think there are a few other videos out there comparing the IQ Tour Solid to the 78, but they're so far apart because of the cover difference that there's not really a point. It's kind of like comparing a putter to a 5 iron, just so fundamentally different. So while they both have a grip and a shaft and a head . . the actual performance and uses are wildly different.

Please let me know again what’s wrong with username bowling ball that’s getting better and better with time? Shouldn’t that be a good thing if a bowling ball is a tool and never use it right then why should you ban a product that’s good? • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  5 місяців тому +1

      There are several urethane studies that you can pull up if you just google them, would take a little too much time to track them all down. There's a fine line between something being good or effective and a crutch or removing much of the intended difficulty of a lane condition. The issue, as illustrated in the video is that the balls being too soft basically took the pattern out of play and made it much too easy, and the softer balls ignored the pattern differences to a large extent.
      Just like other games/sports ban or restrict certain aids, tools, products, etc., this falls outside the range of acceptable assistance, as it makes the ball far more important than the bowler.
