This was definitely one of the most informative, easy to understand ball comparison videos i have watched. And I've been watching a ton lately. Thanks for the master class!!
Been bowling for 25 years now and I can't believe how much I just learned watching this video. Like others have said, absolute masterclass by Francois really pointing the differences and philosophies that high level players like himself look for when they throw urethane. Thank you so much for making this video.
Thanks for this video, guys! Frankie is very good with his feedback. The IQ 78U looks to be a good blend of old-school urethane with modern core technology. I predict this will be a useful piece this coming PBA 2024 tour season. I have a Pitch Black that I primarily use for my spares, but i also use it on the fresh for the first 4-6 frames before moving into my reactive pieces.
Congrats Frankie on your first round draft into the 2024 PBA League. Your hard work and dedication to this sport is definitely noticed. This is going to be a fun season! Go get'em!
I used to use urethane for spares, but as a 2 hander it became sub-optimal. That being said, it did teach me how to flatten my hand out. Now I use it if I need if the middle is hooking too much, or if I need to create hold/carrydown. The furthest left I've been with urethane was when the lane machine malfunctioned and layed out a 8ish mil house shot. I stood on 35 and threw my purple hammer out to about 6. Shot 540 than night, 3rd highest 3 game series of the night. Edit: I should mention that I throw around 17-18 mph, with an average of 480-500 revs
Awesome job Frankie! All of you guys do a great job at JR pro shop. Frankie a great addition! Thx for the simplistic explanations. Getting into bowling so these vids help me understand ball reactions. Keep up the great work!
Great job Frankie, Barks, Jungo, and the boys. This video is soooo damn good. Great showcase of how these are different and when they'll each come into play. So awesome!
I've always had trouble throwing modern urethane balls. I use an old Rhino for spares, but other than that, I don't have a urethane piece. I don't bowl many conditions requiring it, plus my roll gets the ball started early, so I can pretty easily get controllable reactions out of my reactive pieces. I do have a couple of urethane like shapes, and they do work pretty well when I do need them.
I stopped bowling in 2014 when my car and ball got stolen out of my driveway on the night before my mother in laws funeral! I used a Turbo Urethane by Ebonite back then, I bowled two 300 games, one 299 game, many 278 , 279 games, and over 200-700 series with that ball! After it got stolen, my game sucks nowadays with resin balls!
I would love to see Francois Lavoie build a 6 bowling ball arsenal; One for house shot and one for tournaments. Plus maybe see him throwing the equipment on the lane in that same video. It would and could give us some insight into his thought process! TIA
Excellent video! One of your best. IQ 78 looks amazing. Total 80's control ball. Thank you Frankie. That is one of the things I have not liked with modern urethane, they are too strong to play from the outside, but too weak to play in the oil, so I get trapped in a one to two board area. IQ 78 looks like it will allow me to take advantage of the free friction to the outside on house shots and get a very smooth and subtle move to the pocket.
Like listening to a scientist, really likes that and thanks because I use a double cross and it it also gets into the roll phase earlier, when I was seeing your shots they reminded me of how the red tank moved for me when I was throwing that
I got an iq 78 U for Christmas, ive been wanting to get a urethane ball forever and with the new 78 hardness rule going into effect for pba On january first this is one of the only urethane balls Not being banned in a few days. So far ive got nothing bad to say about it but to be fair only done house shots with it, with leagues being on break for the holidays so I'll have to see if it holds up for me 🤔
Very informative video all the information of where you are standing and throwing the next one right on the same spot and seeing the differences is very useful overall great video

I use Urethane a lot but I only have a Purple Hammer. Guy I know put a long pin layout on his 78 U and it hooks. Not a bunch of over under like weaker layouts.
Best video so far with the new urethanes. Question for Frankie, if you were going to use reactive resin instead - what layout would you use for a urethane shape.
it is amazing how insane the Urethane thing has gone.. love the how to use it. Well you drill it the way you like, throw it, adjust fine the line and bowl. its how we did in the 80s with the Hammers and the Columbia Udots. people that say Urethane sucks have either never tried it or tried to throw it like the nuke bombs being made today and cant score. Just throw it adjust and go from there. its not rocket science
Personally, I love using urethane especially if it's short or the lanes transition. My rav rate is high, so I need urethane. I actually bought the NU Hammer today and drill it like my Purple Hammer and my Black Widow Pink Urethane to compare them.
Does Frankie have videos on how his footwork is so damn smooth?? I am typically a little fast with my feet and it causes knee pain. I need to get my form like this so I can take my game to the next level.
Great video guys !! interesting to note that the Pitch Black lane shines ... and looking at IQ 78U it lane shines too, my old "Green Pin " purple hammer never lane shines
I want a Urethane ball so bad to have better opportunities in local tournaments and on short patterns or tough shots if I join a challenge/sport shot league. My issue is not understanding the approach to how to drill it layout wise. I've always seen urethane be thrown better with more surface, so that is easier. I know every bowler is different, and there are many factors that impact a workable layout, but what is the ideology behind how urethane balls should be drilled with layout? I have higher speed (20-20 mph off the hand) with a high 300s/low 400s rev rate. Get the core to roll/flip early? Mid lane? For dual angle, does the 2nd angle matter much on urethane balls like it does on reactive? Basically should you just keep it the same as the first? How do PAP and pin distances help or negatively impact urethane balls? I'm no tour player but with the way balls cost now, the worst thing I want to happen is think a ball is junk or it not work for me just because I don't have it drilled with enough wiggle room to play the lanes the way these balls are intended.
I'm still a pretty new bowler, and extremely confused on this topic...the last statement he made states that his urethane balls hook early and smoothly...those are two words which describe a pretty strong ball, right? So then how does that make for a good spare ball? I'd think a good spare ball, if we're talking about all the right side (and whole lane for certain players) leaves that require a straight shot, we'd want a crazy clean ball with no core - one that will clear any oil or friction without reading, and one without a core trying to stand up and change direction. I have a urethane pearl RG Retro that I like as my spare ball, and I can make it hook if I get a good enough handful, so I understand the utility of an ultra-weak ball. It's harder, though for me to understand how a ball that is "early and smooth" is idea for straight shots when needed, as it's WAY hard for me to make even my Hustle go dead straight, let alone my Hy-Road or Summit. I know Frankie knows his stuff, but I still don't quite get it. Hope that makes sense.
Am I lost??? Why not just make 78 hardness Pitch Blacks and Purple Hammers? I almost see the NU Hammer as a "FU" to the PBA..but still..why not increase the hardness on the popular Urethane balls instead of eliminating them completely??
I just want to know why so many league players use urethane on house patterns. Everything I keep seeing from professional bowlers in UA-cam content says you should NOT be using urethane on a house pattern. I also find it frustrating in league sometimes when a lot of people are using urethane. It seems to really move oil into the dry, in your path to the pocket and seems to begin to make it difficult to strike with a reactive ball (and a urethane).
@@Taco-TannerVODS oh c'mon smarty pants. this is what i saw at the beginning with the new reviews. yes, it appears that it's an effective ball on tough patterns. a lot of people are having success with it. I usually don't keep close track of my comments and try to amend them later.
