Thank you Justin for the heartfelt, thoughtful reaction to our video! I'm Jim, the piano, clarinet, percussion, audio and video guy... I am accompanied here by some of my great musician friends from around the world. My apologies for misspelling the drummer's name, YOANN - I accidently put a 'J' in his credit. You pretty much nailed it with the comment saying "that arrangement is forever" which totally underscores the beauty of this rendition. Despite those who are incapable of appreciating what the purpose of a tribute cover is, this video goes a long way in effectively portraying the genius of the Carpenters arrangement that has made this song so iconic. Perhaps those who are so inclined to admonish this 21 yr old for being an "impersonator" should listen to her version of Georgia on My Mind and comment on how much she sounds like Ray Charles. All that aside, IMO you did an excellent job in sincerely pointing out many of the key aspects of what makes this such an enjoyable view. Thank you.
Hi Justin, Thank you for the great reaction. She has two original songs but you can see why I lead with this (or the other one). One of the originals is a Christmas song that released last season. The other is a song written in the style of Bacharach/Carpenters and released the day after WOJB. This one released March 2nd, Karen’s birthday. Loved putting a smile on your face! Joe
Hi Justin. Dave from Over There. Lovely voice, terrific song, impressive multi-tracked performance. Like you, I would like to hear some original material from her. I have an album of original songs by a British singer called Harriet who also sounds uncannily like Karen. Suggested tracks; Love Will Burn, What's Mine Is Yours, Afterglow.
Wow..! That was superb. It was so close it brought a tear to my eye. I can spot the differences because the Carpenters rendition is so well known to me. Karen Carpenter could put a hard dynamic edge on her voice, which Tori slightly lacked, but this was still magical.
The only explaination I have is that the record is burned into our consciousness. But the fact is that Karen herself would have sounded "different" at the Gilroy Garlic Festival than the record for a million reasons both technical and physical, unless there were shenanigans going on.
@@ericzeichert511 Funnily enough, Karen Carpenter's voice was analysed by the host on Wings of Pegasus YT channel. He at once realised the difference between Karen in the studio and singing live. But she was uncannily accurate, sounding remarkably similar.
Tori adored Karen, so she actually has picked up a lot of Karen's nuances. Of course, nuances wouldn't matter if she couldn't sing beautifully. Her range is similar to Karen's contralto, but it's not just the range. Her timbre is a little rounder and not as overtone-laden as Karen, only noticeable if you've listened to Karen for years, which I have. Her vibrato is sublime, seeming to be held forever. So, with this, she does a LOT of Carpenters covers, but now that I've said her range is similar, you won't believe her Olivia Newton-John cover, being that Olivia is a soprano. Tori is a once-in-a-lifetime old soul who doesn't shout or scream at you and who doesn't resort to histrionics. Her singing is just unparalleled. And she's a sweet, humble person. (By the way, I left out the part that she's an audio engineer who makes her own covers too by herself on multitrack equipment and using Pro Tools software. She's ridiculously gifted.)
Nope. No AI. Fil from Wings of Pegasus channel did a deep dive on this particular video and confirmed that there is not any technical correction or enhancement going on. Just genuine singing.
Like Steve said, not at all. For further reference, JP mentioned Wings of Pegasus when he read comments. Fil analyzed this video and Tori in two episodes in early March. An eye opening set of shows. Joe
Great cover as far as "accurate covers" go. She's got the voice (and that's already something almost impossibly rare). I have this idea that a great song is going to attract great covers. It's a part of the ultimate longevity of the song, for one thing. As far as I'm concerned I'd like to hear more reactions to covers, actually. If you want to try something a bit more "faithless" (but properly devout) Carpenters cover, maybe try *Superstar* (as interpreted by *Sonic Youth* - who had a bit of a Karen obsession.) ua-cam.com/video/Y21VecIIdBI/v-deo.html
A truly (almost too perfect - not a complaint but astonishing) incredible recreation. Since we're on the topic of covers, for a fun one, I would encourage you to check out this one: ua-cam.com/video/BXNpzem0eI4/v-deo.htmlsi=x7th35EhA4eNXTbb of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lot Of Love" (warts and all) sung by two young ladies. It's not a recreation of the original note for note but interesting nonetheless. Worth at least one view, I'd say.
She'd become "that singer who reminds me of Karen Carpenter". Which isn't exactly shabby. (There are others: Sharon Corr, Gloria Estefan, Harriet...the first two don't even cover Carpenters.) What's neat about having a voice reminiscent of a late icon is that you can outdo the AI brigade and answer the question, "what would (insert song title) sound like if KC had sung it?" with a genuine here-and-now voice instead of digital fakery. Oh are there ever loads of songs I'd like to hear Tori do, on that basis alone...
Just for definition sake, attribute act is a performer or band that does only one artist and will do an entire concert of that artist. Tori has a passion for the carpenters and it's where she started. Her natural voice sounds like Karen and she is not putting on a fake style. She covers other artists and she has three original songs at this point. She is a bit of a vocal chameleon as she sometimes sounds somewhat like the artist she is covering but she also has her own distinct voice. That is most evident in her originals. Tori is a timeless talent Who has an affinity for classic songs. She doesn't sound like anyone else out there today in my opinion.

Of course the people she's working with REALLY know their way around the studio to be able to replicate that vintage sound. Super impressed.

Nice cover by Tori and James! I like it. Tori's singing is excellent on this song.
Tori has a video showing how she recorded the harmonies for this cover. It’s a brilliant and educational video.
"Reincarpentered". Love that...
Tori and James channeling Karen and Richard. Like you said, I was ready to dismiss it but hearing Tori’s first note goosebumps. Beautiful tribute.
Yes, we did realize greatness. We grew up in a musical shangrilah in the 60s and 70s
There's an album called If I Were a Carpenter that is all covers of their songs. Sonic Youth covers Superstar. 😊
