How much oil should your mustang burn, does it need a rebuild?

- If your mustang is burning oil, is it time to rebuild the motor?!
Not nessisarily. Typically manufactures rate typical oil consumption in the neighborhood of 1 quart for 1500 miles or so. We are happy to report that most terminator cobras we have had in and out of the shop do not see those kind of numbers. Until we met this one, Snek aka Smokey Joe.
This bad boy consumes around 2 quarts in about 1k miles!!
Check out the rest of the video for the details and more carnage we found in this seemingly well-running engine (aside from oil consumption)

That really blows! Really interested in seeing what the engine builder has to say about it for where it is going. Glad the NY Cobra finally made it home as well.
NICK!! It’s a 2004 Cobra.... also... those washers on the studs are TERRIBLE! To be fair we do have FR-500 wheels to put on it once it gets back into our garage that DO clear without the washers (cringe). Thank you guys so much for taking care of it!!! Not looking forward to the bill but definitely looking forward to enjoying it once it’s all fixed.
Whoooppss!!!
They look so similar 🤣😁
Streetcar Shenanigans HA!! Ya think. 😉🤣
My 01 Cobra definitely shoots out blue smoke on start up. Around 166k miles. Consumes about a quart every 4k miles. It's garage kept, but daily driven. Light modifications
166k miles?! Shes doing pretty dang good then
Man Nick it never gets old seeing you clean up the shade tree mechanic crap of the world Lmao FYI love the name of builds that you guys work on Lol smoking Joe Lmao straight Gold. Poor Dan grinding away. You guys are amazing !! Have a good turkey day fellas !!
I got a 96 4.6 I change your oil 4 weeks ago and it has a zero and I added new oil today and it shows nothing leaking
It Hass to be from the head gasket because the car has a cracked head
Damm, that sucks! had a built motor, coustomer obviously has some money in it already, good thing he brought it in though, soon the motor would have started telling knock knock jokes... I'm sure he loved getting that phone call. All you can do is Build it better!
It does suck, and we only bought it back in May. We did our research and several people commented on how good/smooth/strong it ran other than the little bit of smoke. PCV or valve guides were what most people said was the likely problem, and they seem like the most common issues. The smoke was getting worse...so off to Nick, Dan, and crew it went. You are correct, not happy about the verdict, but happy its with the right people now.
@@klyneis These fellas know there way around the fox, sn95, & new edge platform, she is in good hands. I have the same car, it got my attention black, only mine is an 03, no ccws, and irs in place. Good luck, will follow the build... these terminators are a blast!
@@josephf593 Thanks! The wheels are actually only XXRs and they don't clear the Cobra R Brembo brakes. Which is why there are fuckin' spacers AND washers up front. I only recently discovered the washers and I'm not happy about it. I have a staggered set of 18" FR500's from my last Mustang that the finish has gone to shit that I am gonna get re-powdercoated and mounted up. But this fix is going to cost a fair bit more than we were anticipating, so I hope to have them done by spring driving season.
My car starts up with blue puff sometimes and I checked my oil and it was dry I put oil in it and ima see if it starts to do anything bad
aight i got a question. so a little over two years ago i fully built a 4.6 pi with my dad. bout two months ago i was on my way back from town when i’m pretty sure it spun a rod bearing. i towed it back him checked the oil and it had 1 quart in it. there was now smoking on startup didn’t burn oil. and had zero oil leaks. i’m pretty stumped on how it burned that much oil with out me noticing. got any ideas?
My 04 is at 74000 and doesn't use any oil between changes.
Thanks!!
Shes still mint!
My mustang blows blue smoke once in a while bro what is that? I have a off-road h pipe, could a bad intake manifold gasket do this? Or is it something else ? She doesn’t look like she eats oil.. this is stock 4.6 engine still, lol that’s a lot. Once inside a while at a light when I got will blow smoke, I don’t get any blue smoke in start just one ima a while here and there mate
If not on start up its likely the pcv system.
How is that routed, stock?
@@StreetcarShenanigans yes it’s all stock as of now brothers
@@StreetcarShenanigans another thing to mention bro, I have changed the pcv valve on the passenger side already, I do have some sort of oil leak tho Inder my intake manifolds thinking that it’s the gaskets would this cause any type blue smoke? or could my engine be close to going
So I have a teksid block mmr short block bro, what should I get looked at from him? It’s going into a machine shop for nee higher comp pistons, and recently found out the 4.75 stroker had a coyote boss 302 crankshaft
On startup my 97 4.6 2v lets out a decent puff of smoke also when idling if I give it a nice push on the throttle some smoke will come out. Haven’t done a compression test but is it possible it could be the NPI valve seals?
Has around 150K miles. Drives great feels healthy but burning oil.
There is oil inside my air filter tube
Likely pass side pcv. Consider oil seperaors on both sides or delete for catch can
What would you guys say and use for custom pistons, and rod, would you know what the actually power level the molnar power added rods handle
Also I see you have a mmr shirt on.... are you a supporter of there engines? I get so much hate by people cause I have a1000se 4.75 stroker
My e92 doesn't even burn that much lol
LOL, Probably because its only going 13.6 ;)
