I'm not sure if they're still doing it as much currently, but many great fan projects have gone away over the years! Although there's some hope since you can't copyright gameplay elements, so if your game works well enough and has a great overall "feel", then making your own new characters for it could make it something amazing that you could actually make a living off of! Heh, kind of a reverse Doki Doki Panic, I guess.
