I just bought the Hypercrypt Legion box for $200 out the door from a hobby shop. There's still stock out there at good prices if you are patient. I finally get to start my necron army! 😊
I'm tempted to pick this one up to add to the Necron models from the 9th Edition Indomitus box sets and to paint them up as a force for my friend to play against my Orks. They would be educational and entertaining to paint.
Any box of plastic skeletons can be a necron army with enough leadbelcher spray and nuln oil ;) But for real, Necrons are a *wonderful* army for someone looking to branch their hobby out from their first army. From marines. So many people start with marines. You probably accidentally got some crons in the box of marines that were your entry to the hobby. Check the couch cushions. The basic box art scheme on warriors is *so* simple and rewarding just following the steps, and you can have a good amount of fun with the characters. And there are really neat alternate schemes out there, like sandstone necrons or plastic-look necrons. Plus, they open the door for a relative newcomer to learn techniques like adding a bit of glow or oily weathering.
You _do not_ want to try and magnetize the hands and arms of the little robot skeletons. But, on the plus side, you could paint the whole army box up to a nice standard in about 24 hours, without a airbrush and with only about a half-dozen paints or less.
I have a feeling im going to regret not starting necrons with this box. Also on the fence about the tau box, but think im leaning more that way since ive already got their old combat patrol
I count myself lucky that I’m never tempted to start a new army, oterwise these holiday boxes are a great addition. In the past I’ve had some smaller extra armies, but those were mainly to get other people I know into playing 40k, but unfortunately I never was able to convert any of my friends. So sold those off and focused on my Orks. Still expensive, but it definitely protects me from a lot of fomo.
im picking one up. the only stuff I have atm is the combat patrol, so i can use all this stuff. would have been better for me with immortals instead of the lychguard/praetoreans though, but so be it.
I agree this is definitely the last chance to do Necrons cheap. Dont forget their Killteam is a mini discount box as well. I have mixed feelings on this battleforce though. While I like some of the units, they dont synergize well and isnt a good start for new players. Its built towards a specific detachment that plays very different and isnt very beginner friendly. With this many foot soldiers, the Monolith would have been a better choice over the Void Dragon. Otherwise I would swap the warriors with shooting options like Lokhust Heavies, Hexmark Destroyers, or even upgrading to immortals/deathmarks that also would provide more variation in the box. Ill probably pick this box up in early 2025 to bolster my army
