I had been tripping a lot. I spoke to my son who is a Personal Instructor. He explained that my problem was probably exactly what is said here and he told me to do these exact exercises! They've really helped ( and I'm very proud of my son 😊)
And so you should be ❤! Very happy for you.
😅
I've been tripping too. I should not be rushing and take note of my walking route ie tree roots, etc
You didn't trust your son since you came to youtube for advice, lol, yeah very "proud" of your son NOT.
Yes, always be proud of your son
Too many people give up too early and move to a one story house instead of staying where there are stairs. Stairs are the BEST workout for the whole body I've ever found. I'm 66 and am still in my four story Victorian house, stairs are my best friend!
I love your style of teaching, and the fact that you don't bombard us with hyperactive enthusiasm & background noise makes it easy to learn from you.
Or annoying music
I like your emoji! I’ve not seen that one!
@@M.C.Blackwell I so agree about the annoying music! So glad that this video did not have any distractions. Just the information we need.
@@jmp42956to😅😮
Complete agreement, kathym6603. I wish more videos would dispense with "music" altogether. So much easier to follow what's being said. Will's lack of patronizing attitude is very welcome, also.
I’m 70 and have exercised my entire adult life. But for the last 7 years I’ve been dealing with Parkinson’s Disease so these types of exercises are so critical to me. Thank you, Will, for being a game-changer for me. Jim in Oregon
Will I appreciate you so much for providing the videos for seniors over 50! This is conveniently viewed in the privacy of our own home! You are truly a game changer and blessing!
For 25 years I have had this. I am an 83yo man.
No doctor has been of help. Like a mystery to each one.
I am going to get a stool online and start right away.
Thank you so much for this wonderful information.
God bless you🙏🏻
Get a STOOL? Just use STAIRS!!!
Some people live in on story houses or apartments
@traybern he said use stairs if you have them, duh! Use your taringas neh!
Just read your profile, such a Paragon of virtue 🙄
Until nearing age 70, I had never in my life broken a bone. Then I tripped on a garden hose, fell and chipped an elbow. I'm thinking if I had adopted these exercises THEN, perhaps I wouldn't have tripped again a few years later, making a two-point landing that shattered both elbows! Needed repeat surgeries and have had pain and limited range of motion ever since.
I recently did a 'face plant', thanks to a trip in my house, and I realize at this age, it's imperative that one NOT be TRIPPING. I'll add these exercises to what I already do, hoping to be careful and stay whole 'for the duration.' Wishing everyone else good safety, too.
God bless you. Stay safe…and thank you for wishing everyone else safety.
I will be 70 in a minute. Just subbed. 50 minutes a day total of dedicated walking/exercise. Great vid for us oldsters. Thanks
Exercise begins at minute - 5:35 onwards.
Thank you! I zone out for a minute waiting…😊
Cheers!
I usually look out for these time stamps, but on this occasion it was an interesting intro.
Thank you 🙏🏼
@@gmr1241how do u look out for these time stamps?? Please???
Your videos are the best. Everytime I see my doctor I tell him about one of the problem areas in my body, including brain fog, memory problems, shaking in my feet and hands, falling out of bed in my sleep, arthritis starting up in my hands. His reaction since end of 2019: "Don't worry about it.' Thus the problems are compounding over time and everything is getting worse. (Definitely need a new doctor!) I'm only 56 and somehow I've got to live with everything getting worse for, probably, a couple more decades. Thank goodness for people like yourself who can actually provide exercises I can do (without falling over) and others on UA-cam who provide advice on health. I can't thank you enough.
I will definately try. As falling down really scares me.afraid of breaking some bone and what follows is dependence.
I will be turning 49 this year and because of living a sedentary life the last 10 years I have a lot of out of weak muscles. Thank you for your advice.
Definitely going to do these exercises. I’m 71, I have no issue with tripping, but I’m thinking prevention is better than cure!
This has been a problem for me and I have even broken my hand from one tripping episode, when I mentioned to my doctor that I kept tripping, they just shrugged their shoulders. You are the first one I have seen to address the issue. Thank you.
Sadly, there's little help to be gained from doctors to improve health or daily life
@@newgabe09exactly, they are just pill pushers
@@newgabe09Depends on the doctor and the doctor's specialty. A good doctor will recommend you see another specialist (dietician, PT, etc.) If s/he is unable to help you her/himself.
Yes, need this advice. TY, my right foot drop has tripped me multiple times.
@@beckyspangler10. Think we need to get under the hood with these trips and falls.
Is it joint replacement? Is it new or overly worn shoes? Let’s figure this out.
Long before I got to this Age Group, it seemed that the thick soled athletic shoes were not good for older people. No flex with those thick rubber soles. It’s like walking with snow shoes, plop foot down, no flex. None. Toes are there for a reason, have to have flex, toes have a job.
It’s a little here, a little there…big picture is…it’s a chronic problem, effects every family.
I've been noticing that I'm catching my foot on the ground, its quite scary as I'm worried about falling over and its affected my confidence little, this simple exercise is a lifesaver. Thanks so much. Also love the non flashy way of teaching with no background music or noise.
yes background silence is heavenly thank you 🙏
I A G R E E wholeheartedly!!
Same here - it's horrible, isn't it?
@ninettekelley8315 You said it, about background 'music', actually noise. I make it a point to compliment anyone that does without it. Wonder why uploaders think that it is an essential to 'attract' or 'keep the interest' of viewers that way. I guess some people like noise, like they like cheap perfume and malls and supermarkets have adopted it to 'attract the masses' until it has now become the culture for all sellers.
Very nice to follow this practice. So it would be safe while walking. Thanks a lot.👌👍🙏
Exactly what I need and the exercise I have needed for decades now. At 70 I now look forward to no more tripping and falling! Thank you. ❤
At seventy nine years
I have triped a few times and I am glad for this help
I tripped and have hurt my shoulder it's fractured my collarbone and shoulder I was rushing when walking
Me too. I tripped and badly Jared my lower back and was in agony for weeks and was prescribed heavy painkillers by my doctor. I will definitely be doing this exercise ❤
Hallo Dr thanks I am starting THIS workout.
We need to be aware….be careful, nay--avoid entirely carrying things. It throws you off. Use a handled bag, or something with wheels and a sturdy strap.
It’s a butt of jokes at the moment, tripping and slipping, but we need to get mad because simple fixes will keep these awful injuries away.
Broken bones, doctors visits, costly and unnecessary, with simple things we can improve to keep this from happening.
We need to blame poor design, not blame the victim.
In the last five years I have fallen upstairs several times finally realizing that my left foot isn’t clearing the top of the stairs. I’m definitely doing this exercise! Thank you.
I keep doing this
You must have good help as President of the United States. Fallen upstairs recently?
My problem with tripping, at the age of 80, is that my concentration goes for a moment. It's not good to talk and walk at my age. I can't seem to manage both at the same time! Good advice on the stepping up. Thank you.
You’ve just lost your capability of “walking and chewing gum” ‘cuz you’ve lost “muscle memory”. As “youngsters” we didn’t have to think about walking without falling because our bodies were well accustomed to doing the whole process - our bodies REMEMBERED how to work! We get sedentary as we age, simply because we don’t have enough interesting things to keep us up and going in our later years!!
I have to add here that I am 49 and I have ADHD. My concentration goes out 100x per day and I am very prone to tripping. It's absolutely true, I can't walk and talk, cook and talk, drive and talk. I never have been able to my whole life. Everyone knows in my family to stay quiet in the car, and my husband always offers me his arm.
@@weaviejeebies V E R Y LUCKY Lady you are, to have S U C H an attentive fella!!!

When I first glanced at this headline, I thought it said, "How to stop trippin' when you think."
I know a lot of folks who need that tip.
Thank you, I’m 78 year old and this exercise, adding to the others that I learned, are helping me to feel more confident when I walk.
Brilliant as usual.
Precise & easy to implement instructions.
Thank you Will for your wonderful help.❤
Excellent style of conducting the explanation and demonstration. Both are highly effective. Thank you!
So easy to practice yet seems to be so helpful. Definitely going to try.
.Thanks a lot.

Thank you so much Will.❤❤❤
I’m a bit over 50 young and I tripped over my own foot! There wasn’t anything to trip over. It was when I was tired from walking so fast that I tripped. Today UA-cam’s algorithm showed me your video. I tried the exercise you demonstrated and was shocked at how weak my shin muscle was! I will do this to strengthen my legs so I don’t trip anymore. ❤
I can trip over nothing as well and since I live in Boston with very uneven sidewalks and cobblestoned streets, I worry about falling all the time. I will definitely start doing this exercise.
I have had 3 falls this year causing some serious injuries, so now I always use a walker out of fear. Thank goodness your video appeared so I gave it a watch and tried the exercise - while thinking it wasn’t going to be much help for me. What a shock to realize one leg could not do the movement! I immediately did 10 very difficult repetitions and have set a timer for more practice. THANK YOU for doing this video, you may have saved me from another fall!
I did these exact exercises and others I found on Google to fix my drp foot injury..10 times three times a day…and more. It fixed it can drive again..thank you I’ll resume these again.
You are an excellent instructor! Thank you for explaining with clarity and precision how to execute specific exercises to help strengthen these muscles.
I hate it when the floor reaches up and grabs my foot! 😂 Thank you for the exercise! I will be incorporating this daily.
😂
I am sixty plus .and am a sports teacher. What you are showing may help the kids that I train. Thankyou.
Thank you VERY much 4 this! I have Multiple Sclerosis and AWFUL foot drop. I fell and really hurt myself a few weeks ago and wound up in the ER for 5 hours - thankfully I didn't break anything (thank God!)
Thank uou so much for an understandable explanation & demonstration!
Yes I had this after a car wreck where someone hit me from behind. I thought it more or less went away. But a few years back I started tripping. This video reminded me, to remember to pick my toes up. Thank you.
35 years as an OT and haven't been able to convince several MD's, PA's, NP's - WHY I have to manually pull my left leg into the car and also use door jamb to do the one stair into my home=hip flexors! One nurse practitioner sent me to a prosthetic company to have them make me an AFO! I had several back surgeries and many falls in the following years so I'm sure hip flexors not working on the left. By just watching your video I pulled out a stool and even though I knew I couldn't do it, I tried to follow your demo and I could lift my right leg with difficulty but not the left to put it up on the stool. Right leg had a lot of pain in the tendons on the top of that foot and also the right hip but I was able to do it. Needless to say I'm saving this video, and now I will know how to demonstrate to these uninformed doctors what the real problem is! I cannot thank you enough for this demonstration👍🤗
i'm an 81 yr.old retired exercise and sports science professional who stills does weight training and competitive swimming. i'm very fit and active. however, the past year has seen me falling, tripping a dozen times with no major consequences. when i was coaching track and field years ago one of the phrases i used with my runners for proper sprinting technique was " KNEE UP, TOE UP". i find myself saying this to myself lately!!!! it affects most of us in the "golden years" give it a try.
My friend was tripping balls we told him do not take two hits. We found your video and got him to walk and lift his feet and swing his legs a little, he did not stop tripping, but it helped him to get outside the change of scenery helped a little, he went from tripping bad, to a better trip.
Wtf are you talking about???
I think we need something more than a "like" button...how about a LOVE button!😅 You are the best young man! A million thank yous!❤❤❤❤❤
I never thought I will find an answer to my tripping issue in yt. Thanks
I have recently started following and I’m enjoying catching up with previous videos. I’ve learned so much and I’m doing the exercises you recommend, especially for tripping. No yelling and fast talking, no music to distract makes me feel I’m actually having an appointment with a physiotherapist. I’m 73 and very active and feel this site will help me remain so. 🙏🏻

I am 59 and have had a two fall since June due to week hips and ankle,so I am very glad that you put this exercise on UA-cam,thankyou
Thank you so much I have been tripping since I was 25 when I was first pregnant and my ankles would give way. I am now 81 and still tripping. I believe this is the miracle exercise I have been waiting for. I will keep you posted. Thank you 🙏🏼 From a grateful Great-Grandmother from Down yonder NZ
I was in car accidents many years ago and have multiple issues … I recently tripped … thank you so much.
I like this, because it is simple and doesn't hurt.
I tripped even last week and knocked hard on my left knee bone 😢 yes like you said I'm loosing confidence. My problem is the hip due to spinal damages. Thank you for the video ❤
One would think that after 45 years of martial arts, tripping would not be a concern! Nope. Now i have an exercise to add to my routine! Thanks.
Very, very helpful!!! Now, I have to find out what to do since I have severe arthritis in my hips. No matter what, I am trying this!!!
Wow! I am so glad for people like you who share info on how to be strong as we age. Who wants to be weak? Such a simple & effective exercise. 😊
Your videos and book have helped me no end! Thank you very much! If I was there I'd hug you.
At 65 I had started tripping on level floors and didn't know why. This really helps!
I used to Instruct people how to roll a Kayak. I found if there is too much information the students could not process all the information while underwater fail. The Students I gave 3 simple stages on information were successful. My way is KISS. In the end other Instructors sent me their failours/nohoppers and within 15mins>1.5 hrs I had them rolling successfully. As a Teacher you will understand.
This is a compact and simple exercise.
Nicely explained 👌
Level 1 is Ankle dorsi flexor
Level 2 is Hip flexor.
Advisable start with :
*15 Reps (2 sets) on weak leg.
*15 Reps (1 set) on strong leg.
Morning Session.
Evening Session.
Increase the Sets after a week in both sessions
Thank you so much !!! as a nurse ... moving on in age and surrounded by ageing people ( working in aged care ) I am so grateful to be able to make a difference now that I've learned this from you. Thank you!.
Thank you Will, I am 65 and have tripped several times. I also have bilateral hip replacements. I will be doing this exercise!
Thank you for this video. I have a problem with not lifting my right foot enough and I stumble frequently, so I am going to try your method to try and stop it. Thanks.
I have been tripping for many years now as I also had been walking/hiking oftentimes, but tripping came with the territory, so to speak. Especially near to end of trail or shopping or when tired even at home. You identify clearly why I tend to trip. I am a little weak in precisely those areas you point out and including lower back issues. I do wear orthotics for plantar faciitis and RA. My challenges might not be noticable, but they are real. And tripping slightly on uneven surfaces and stairs is a reality. Concentration when a bit tired is defnitely also a thing to consider. This exercise will also improve muscle memory. I thought my vision - I wear prescription glasses with multifocal lenses - was not helpful. So, with this presentation comes more understanding. The issue with tripping is in fact a multi faceted issue. In short, one might say it's because of aging. 😋 Someone even mentions ADD, adding to the other reasons. It's all of the above for me. Tripping is humiliating at any age 🥴 but falling is also a scary experience - that slow motion familiar feeling. 😱 😱 😱 😵 🙈
Thank you!! I thought for one horrific moment I thought we would have to stand up on that leg on the step!! Thank goodness we don't have to. This exercise is very do-able. Thanks again
just what i needed. 74 and tripping over the edge of the bath mat! Come ON!!! I'll be back with a big THANK YOU! I hope.
Thank you so much for this! Tripping over in the street, or even at home, is one of my worst fears. From watching this, I'd say the issue is in my ankles. I'm extremely young for my age (so I'm constantly told!) and I want to stay that way. Perhaps this exercise could even be the key for gaining more confidence when walking the demented one of my 2 small dogs! Only time will tell!!! Fab video. Now subscribed!😊
Thank you Will. As always you provide us with excellent information. This will be very useful for me at 73. I am always scared of tripping and falling. Blessings to you for keeping us informed
This is a great exercise that I have needed for a few years. I thought tripping was due to my foot neuropathy, but I can see that this will work. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much! I've been diGnosed eith MS, but also I have donated my left kidney which might have affected the lower abdominal muscles on the left which I m thinking could modt probably be the cause for feeling permanent pressure there and gradually having lost the agility of my left leg. I 've been using EMS, but not that often to have any results. I hope the exercise you've shown us will work out. It's much easier than carrying pads and wires around with you.
Just tripped this morning coming up the porch stairs. First time I couldn't save myself and scuffed my palms. When I know better I do better. Thank you so much.
You are so easy to listen to and your exercises aren’t overwhelming! Thank you
A trippy vid. Don't take a trip down memory lane. Have a safe trip. Well, I tripped 4 times through 2021/'22. I at first put it down to advancing years. But I then had a closer look at my shoes. They were half a size too big, but they also had no upwards taper at the front of the sole. And they felt a bit baggy overall. I got rid of them 18 months ago and I haven't fallen since. Bless your soles!
You are hilarious. Lol. Now send this to sleepy Joe.
I do these exercises with qigong, yoga, Pilates. Balance, strength, hip openers, squats and practice sit to stand this last one is a challenge I’m working on. Sitting and standing, stretching and reaching are all everyday necessities for everyone everyday to move through life.
It’s not just older people that are locked into a body that isn’t functional or comfortable.
Thanks for the insight you’re doing a fantastic job. Please make a few exercise videos with just a workout for the gym and hydro pool it would be good to have a program for muscle strengthening and stretching exercises:)
I will look for your book is it on audible?
This is exactly how I tripped and landed on my wrist, breaking it. I'm 70, female, and a prime candidate for falls. The areas you mention are where I feel pain right now but will do these exercises once things are okayed by my doc. Not lifting my foot seems to be more common right now.
Thankyou for this information. I have MS and have noticed over the past few years I am tripping more and more, not all the time but enough that my husband feels he has to walk next to me constantly to catch me when I stumble. It would be great to be more confident.😊
Me too!
Thanks, I haven't run into this particular stretch before. It made me realize how much range of motion has been limited by age and inactivity.
Another amazing and informative video! I just asked a question on another of your videos, then I saw this one. I’m pretty sure this is the one I desperately need to help with that flapping of my left foot, I too have trips because I often feel the front of the foot either trip or scuff against especially if there’s a slight rise in the path/road. So very many thanks indeed Will, you are an absolute Godsend! 😊
Good instructor thanks to you please
Great yet simple video that is very helpful to prevent future trippings.Iam now 69years old and I need these exercises to strenthen my shin and hip flexors .thank you very much forthe video.
Yes, exactly. Trouble with sometimes “scuffing” the toe of my right foot and stumbling a bit. I’m 75 and will now do these exercises. BIg thank you!
I have had a couple of trip falls. I mentioned that I was catching my toe/ball of foot, could I have a foot drop? He tested and said 'no, I didn't have that' but left it at that! No help
otherwise. So, as I walked, I just talked to myself to 'pick up my feet'! You've answered my question and I will be working on this. Thank you SO much!!
I have MS and one of my first symptoms is foot drop. Had many falls while walking over the years including a few weeks ago but I will do this exercise now and hope it helps. Thanks for this video
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this. I will be doing it right away. I took a very bad spill the other day right on the sidewalk. Gratefully, nothing happened to me.
Thank you so much for addressing this problem. I am 80 years old and have had two knee replacements. I usually take 2 yoga classes per week. I am very limber, but, I keep tripping. Now I know why. Thanks so very much.
Thank you for the exercise lesson. I've had several bad falls. I can barely stand myself up some days. I fall a lot in my yard (grass clumps). This is perfect for me. 🎉 God bless you.
Thank you for doing these videos. I find them very helpful. I’ve increased my exercise and steps over the last few weeks and find great benefits. The balance exercises are very useful and timely as I’ve just recently noticed that I catch my toe more easily which could result in a nasty fall.
Your explanations are easy to follow and given at a perfect speed. 🙏
I had foot drop in my early twenties because I had an untreated neck injury. It was not treated until I was 44. At that point, I had advanced cervical stenosis. As my nervous system has healed, I've stopped catching my toe on the ground.
What a pleasant experience. Thank you for not talking fast. Which others definitely do. Who do they think they're talking to anyway? There is one channel about circulation that continued to be too fast at 50% playback speed. His audience certainly isn't teens.
I thought you might like to hear of my experience. Ten years ago I had my right knee replaced and five years later also my left. Ever since I have noticed that I often catch my foot, particularly on uneven ground. I never seem to catch them when going up steps, just when the ground is uneven and I guess I'm not expecting the change in clearance. I saw your video and have given it a try.
I was amazed how after just a few reps I could feel the muscles in my shin and at the front of my hip pulling so I am sure this exercise will help me. Thankyou for doing this video, now all I need is something that will help my shoulders. I am having trouble raising my arms above my shoulder height as I get severe pain right inside the shoulder joint. I will certainly follow your videos as I find your explanations superior to my doctors. I am 73 years old so certainly fit the age group you help. Good work!!!
Thank you. I don’t have a problem with tripping, but my friend does. I’m going to pass this information on to her.
Will this was amazing. I have fallen a few times in the past and couldn't explain to physicians how it happened. Your explanation helped put everything in perspective. I'm going to incorporate this exercise into my daily exercises so I can get 🔙 to my daily walk without the fear of falling. Thanks Will.
I’m so excited to start this exercise ❤. Tfs!
Thank you, I have MS and have had some issues with foot drop. I will be definitively be trying these exercises and I am glad to know that I can hold on to something because I have very poor balance.
Exactly what I need! The explanation for the reasons behind the tripping are extremely helpful and the exercise looks quite straightforward. I am going to add this exercise to standing on one leg to help with balance. Hopefully, doing both will help me with the tripping and balance.
Thank you for this wonderful exercise, Doc. Due to spinal stenosis, I developed a mild foot drop and a weak hip muscle. Your other exercises have been extremely beneficial; now I'm going to try this one and will report back in a couple of weeks.
Hope it helps! Glad to hear the videos are useful
Thank you

Walking is no joke when you age. Any tips are welcome here. I'm 71 and really didn't know there are ways to prevent tripping other than just being aware of where you're walking. I just kind of stumbled on this video and plan on doing these exercises. Thank you!
At 77 I have learned my toes are very much about balance and walking with not dragging my feet.
I'm working on hip flexors.
Thank you for the resistance band tutorials, just started. 😊
I'm pleased my videos have been able to offer some useful information and that the exercise tutorials are helpful - keep up the great work :)
Well done! Clear, practical and effective for all ages.
69 years old. Great video! Thanks for the help.
Definitely something I will try after I recover from a sprained ankle, gotten from falling over a curb.
I find this analysis helpful & useful. I have now watched many of your videos.
May I suggest two ideas for your shoot & editing process. Many viewers will see this on a phone or tablet. So portrait video isn't a forbidden idea.
1. Try shooting a test video as a UA-cam short. Your standing shots often hide your face while you are talking. Most of the Image area is the set behind you.
2. Secondly consider short "cut-away" close-ups of actions you are describing. Even short SIDE VIEW stills in this video would clarify what you are describing. They could alternatively be added as (picture in picture) to one side. Thanks again for your videos.
Yes! I needed this! I’m 79, post sepsis/meningitis, and have not gotten my balance back. Will start this today! Thanks, Will ! ❤
Great exercise! Since strength is gained mostly in the range of motion it was trained, this should be done from the ground, since tripping is generally made over low-lying objects or even during normal walking.
I did such a good job of tripping, I did a complete face plant, broke my glasses, blackened my entire face from hair to chin, and broke both my radius and ulna! (I now have a metal plate in my wrist)
Excellent will practice this!
Thank you Will!
I’m 66 years old and have Parkinson’s. I trip quite a bit. This will be useful! Thanks a lot!
I'm sorry to hear that you experiencing trips quite frequently, I'm glad my video was able to offer some useful advice :)
This is the first ankle exercise that is helping. Thank you.
She tripped and fell and couldn't get up.
I got a call from an older renter to come and fix her front door. I got there. She she said that she "tripped and fell over air" in the kitchen. She activated her 911 neck chain button because she thought she broke her hip and did not want to move. The fire department and EMTs responded and had to break in her front door; shattering part of it.
Turns out that she was only severely hip bruised. I ended up replacing the entire front door and jambs. I couldn't bear to charge her for the new door repair/replacement (About $1,000). I wrote it off as a casualty loss.
-
I'm afraid her sunset years of pain and suffering has just begun. She will likely start stooping shuffling her feet now.

Thank you very much
I have found I tend to trip no and then. I have blamed uneven and very poorly maintained footpaths. Had a hip replacement last November but it was happening before my op. I am fine indoors and perfectly even floors.
..just fractured the 2nd toe, right foot.. soo glad i happened on this!... just tried these simple exercises, soo powerful. had no idea how weak the front hip joints were, thank you.
I watched a video of yours and then bought the book. I am 74 and walk for at least 2 hours every day taking my dog out. I now do not need painkillers and have ditched my stick. Very good book. Thank you.
Just what I’ve been needing. Thank you!
