I think also PAT could also be seen as a representation of Ben’s insecurities. Basically PAT is almost this artificial house program that makes sure everyone is taken cares of and knows what they want like Ben making sure his dad and sister have certain lunches when going to work or school. He eventually programs PAT into being this stereotypical mother figure making sure they get vitamins daily, chocolate cupcakes in their lunches, parties, etc. Basically she becomes this ideal image of what a mother is suppose to be/do. But then you have Sara who’s basically this techno genius who’s made it big with programming a state of the art artificial house and is single up to this point. Once she enter into their lives, Ben goes to extreme measures to make PAT is mother like to the point where PAT snaps and tries to keep them quarantine (sorry for those choice of words) in the house. It pretty much represents Ben trying so hard to keep his moms memory alive to the point where he no longer has a social life outside of school and home, and how he tries so hard to keep his dad from not finding anyone else that it’s made him feel isolated from anyone else. So eventually Ben has to confront PAT by telling her she’s not really. It more then likely represents him finally confronting his insecurities about his mother being replaced, and also that their is no such thing as a perfect mother that can’t be replace, program, or artificial. Hence forth, the perfect mother is not real and he must let her go.
But then again I’m probably looking way to deep into a late 90’s DCOM

The title of this movie reminds me of a short story about a smart house. Basically, there's a nuclear fallout and the family living in the smart house die, but the house keeps running like they're alive. It was pretty sad to be honest.

As if thats all that was lost when the mother passed away. As if that's all the dad would get out of remarrying again... If you think about it its a little messed up, like Pig pointed out
Sarah is a career woman in the movie, so you aren't correct. It's really a reflection of the era, since some women chose a career over family and others chose the latter over the former. Also, there is nothing inherently wrong with portraying a woman as a motherly figure. After all, human society was based on that organization for a long time, making it apart of a woman's natural ability to nurture effectively.

This movie reminds me of that short story about the mom and dad and their son and daughter in a really advanced house. The walls could even turn into something different. But the parents notice their kids are getting to into it so they decide to turn the house off later and go on vacation. So to prevent it the kids lure and lock their parents in a room and make them get eaten by lions.
Katy Sagal is such a good actor, even in these short clips its obvious her performance is significantly better than anyone else's in the film

I had a Black Mirror episode idea that was exactly like this, where the smart house's AI becomes self aware and falls in love with the homeowner. The owner brings a woman home and thinks she may be the one, but the house gets jealous and kills her. Then the house forms a projection of her consciousness and tries to seduce the guy based on what she learns from the Internet.
But when the guy doesn't want to be with her she locks him in and tortures him.
I saw Brutalmoose review this too, they had different opinion and it is kind of fun to see from both perspective
