Sega of the mid 90s was the corporate equivalent of throwing spaghetti on the wall and seeing what sticked. As opposed to the tried and true formula of giving the consumer a good overall product.

A lot of companies practiced this, even into the mid 2000's. Sega really were smoking some serious stuff back then, but like all addictions it eventually ruins you.

Meanwhile, their master system and their Megadrive/genesis made tens of millions of happy kids...
I remember going home and start playing games like streets of rage 3, or thunder force 4...
And I also remember seeing an Arabic guy buying like 3 or 4 consoles, and maybe over 50 games, for his young son, and spending the equivalent of today's 5000-7000 $ or €... while I, I could barely buy 1 or 2 games per year. That day, I learned a new word: injustice

They were a rock solid company, that for probably multiple reasons/circumstances seemed to have lost their way. The 32X was a bad deal, as was the CD. Both promised a lot and delivered very little. Not sure why they ever developed either product?

If Sega would have continued making more consoles after the Dreamcast, imagine them naming the later ones after constellations:
Sega Ursa Major, Sega Libra, Sega Sagitarius, etc.

To be honest I think SEGA actually came up with the best console names overall, compared to any of the competition. Only SEGA consoles had pretty kickass names; Master System (pretty bold for a start), Genesis / Mega Drive, Saturn, heck even their portables (Game Gear and Nomad). And of course, the Sega Dreamcast (which I would argue is the best console name of all time). Atari wasn't bad with the Jaguar name (could have continued on with other animal-based console names if they had been successful, would have been interesting names for follow ups), and maybe NEC were on to something starting with the TurboGraphx. But SEGA steals the show for good and great console names. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are completely unimaginative by comparison it's not even fair.

Thank you for this. Now the 32X makes total sense : the trust wasn't there yet in CD-ROM based systems. Sega were playing on two tables, with a cheap option (as long as you had a Mega Drive) and an expensive option, the Saturn. The Jupiter could have been the right middle-ground.

    • @JMFSpike
      @JMFSpike 2 роки тому +4

Nah, it just makes everything make even less sense. One more console on top of all the other consoles and add-ons they had out at that time. They made a huge mess for themselves in the mid 90's, and we all know how that turned out for them in the end. There was very poor cooperation between SOA and SOJ. They were not on the same page, and that continued even into the development of their final console.

As a lifelong Sega fanboy who owns every console of their's and every variant of such, I have always unofficially called the Dreamcast "Project Uranus".
It's my favorite of the planets, has rings like Saturn, and it's axis is all messed up and it's wobbly as it spins around our Solar System. It was also the one planet Sega never used as a codename.
Sega was on shaky ground during the development of the Dreamcast, hence the reason I call it "Project Uranus" because of it's axis.

From an architectural perspective, releasing cartridge-based games for Saturn it's completely feasible for the final release, as the cartridge ports have full access to the main bus and also it's bootable, as we see when we connect cartridges like the Acton Replay. It's just any game that's used the port for that purpose. Partially, because you have two games that indeed used the ROM capabilities of ports, like Ultraman and KOF 95.
Also, the Cartridge RAM-based games use the RAM cartridges as ROM cartridges instead, and that it's because instead of randomly reading and writing content to the cartridge, this games charge the cartridge with the whole content, therefore accessing this content as would be if was a ROM.

IIRC, the Jupiter was to be a Saturn lite with no CD-ROM, less memory, etc, but would be backward compatible with the 32X CD, giving a smoother upgrade path for consumers. Jupiter was supposed to have been canceled first because CD-ROMs became less expensive, and the Neptune was supposed to fill in the mid-range gap. However, with the complete collapse of 32X sales in Winter of 1995, the Neptune was also canceled, meaning that SEGA suddenly had no hardware available for less than the shocking Neo-Geo pricetag of $400 and only two launch titles. When developers suddenly shifted to Saturn and PlayStation, SEGA found itself with few third party games for 1995-96, quickly falling from 55% marketshare to 3%.
Had they made a $200, one SH2 version of Jupiter and let consumers buy the $200 CD addon later (or only if they wanted more expansive games), then the Jupiter-Saturn combo would probably have won the Console Wars. By letting the 30+ million existing Genesis owners save money by simply swapping the box--reusing their controllers, accessories, and adapters, we could've bought the much more powerful Jupiter console for about $160, the same as the 32X addon and at the same time.
Yet SEGA had already become famous for releasing expensive, money losing ($100/box) hardware and discontinuing it as soon as they saw a sales slump. The company was pretty much on deathwatch by developers and enthusiasts as soon as Sega CD buyers realized that the powerful ASIC-DSP scaling/rotation hardware was never going to be used.
Imagine how cool the $199 Jupiter would've been, especially if it could play Genesis games.

The advantage of optical drives was there storage capacity vs expensive mask or EEPROM counterparts. But by the time audio CDs came about the demand for cd optical drives significantly reduced the cost as well as manufacturing the discs them selves.
The big disadvantage is reliability due being built to a price. Over time laser diodes die and the plastic mechanism of the optical drives begin to ware, the lubricant hardens and the gears begin to chafe.
The optical discs fair no better. They are made by pressing pits into a polycarbonate with a foil laminated (glued to its top). Overtime the plastic looses it's plasticity and becomes brittle. The metallic foil begins to delaminate and oxidise leaving you with a useless disc.

Theres no technical reason I'm aware of the Saturn cart slot couldn't have been used for ROM cartridges. There just wasn't any incentive to produce any once the saturn came with the cd rom as standard. Far better to produce a RAM cart that could be used with ANY games instead of a dedicated rom cart that would only work with indivudual games, and there was way more space on the cd than you'd ever get space on a cart.
Using the cart port as a cart port only made sense if you had a version of the machine with no CD ROM drive. CD's were massive and infintely cheaper than ROM carts. For it to be like a cheaper Saturn suggests something akin to the Neptune, the combined Megadrive and 32x.

Sega must have gone through the solar system by this point with all their unreleased prototypes. They really did manufacture their own demise, to many unneeded projects spending huge amounts of R&D money, if Sega had just followed up the MD/GEN with a fantastic 32Bit CD based system, with a MD/GEN slot for backwards compatibility, launch games like Sonic 4, Sonic CD Plus, Streets of Rage 3, Golden Axe 2, Toe Jam & Earl 2, a new Echo game, Earth Worm Jim 3, Altered Beast 2 and so on, basically sequel's that everyone wanted at the time from the best MD/GEN games, they could have used the 32Bit hardware upgrade to make some really beautiful 2D games building on the already great artwork of the MD/GEN, they could have gone 2.5D with some of them, but the technology wasn't good enough yet for decent 3D, so updated 2D would have made much more sense, with FMV cutscenes and CD soundtracks, good quality MIDI/FM Synth sound effects and music, a combination of the MD/GEN, the CD32 and the 32X. Instead, they diluted themselves's, released to many add-ons and subpar games, when all they had to do was release one good nex gen console, they finally got it right with the Dreamcast, brilliant hardware, good games, but they got scared when the PS2 was around the corner and gave up to easy, the DC was a much better console gaming hardware wise, better video IQ, better sound hardware, more innovative unique games with a huge library of IP's to draw from, such a shame, even the online MP was ahead of it's time, the DC still looks incredible when hooked up by VGA to a PC monitor to this day, we don't really get the fun Sega style games any more, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, Chu-Chu Rocket, Segagaga, Seaman, Chanel No.5, Toy Commander, Skies of Arcadia, REZ, Power Stone, Shenmue, Samba De Amigo and so on, they were Nintendo level of polished, but often much more experimental than Nintendo's usual releases, Nintendo can be experimental, like Doshin the Giant, Chibi-Robo, Pik-Min etc, but those are getting rare as well now.

The Saturn may of failed in USA but there's tons of Japanese games with English options. Saturn and Dreamcast are both the best fighting consoles ever made. I run Akura Box on Dreamcast and for Saturn SVIDEO CRT or I use SCART if I must play on HDTV. Sometimes I use my 32 inch HDTV and run S-Video on Saturn and set the resolution in Native and it looks okay cuz it's 480p. VGA signal is a must for Dreamcast.

Do an Episode on how Microsoft Betrayed Sega in a bodysnatcher's corporate horror story, bringing an end to a glorious era and opening the path to such "games" as Ride to Hell: Retribution.

The Saturn was capable of booting from cartridges (just look at the Pro Action Replay/GameShark), and presumably could play games from a ROM cart if there was ever one developed

Don't know if I'm too tired or just a dummy, but when I heard it was "180 pounds" I had a wtf moment. Then I got it.

Considering the Saturn ended up needing more RAM to run some snk and Capcom games properly I'm glad they didn't make a system with half the RAM

since they launched Saturn at $400 it doesn't surprise me they were trying figure out a way to have a $200 or $250 version of it sans CD drive, $400 was a killer for most gamers at least in North America. If 32X had never existed it might not have been the worst thing in the world, although 299 PS1 launch would have destroyed a 250 non cd saturn machine. It was already confusing for casual gamers with 32X. I always leave Sega CD out of all of this, I don't know why people insist on bringing it in, most people who actually bought a Sega CD loved it and still have good memories of it, doesn't deserve to be lumped in with 32X.
