We watched this in college yesterday as our counselling essay this term is about diversity in counselling. Thank you Dr Turner. This was fun and informative.
I think we should not misinterpret what Dr Turner is sharing when he says he feel comfortable working with black clients , he does not mean he is dismissing others in the contrary because he understands what people of color go through in their everyday basis he is actually the best therapist to be in their frame of reference because he himself experiences these difficult circumstances himself so he is congruent with how he feels but he does not diminishes other individuals. Counselling tutors Ken and Rory work more with white colleagues and students that people from other background and this is not a problem as it is their forte , they themselves recognize they have no idea about how it feel to be person of color as they are white men and privileged.
I did feel this started off well. But then heard a comment and I quote "I feel more comfortable working with black kinds as I feel met by them". I actually feel this is not supporting diversity and difference. It would now stop me coming to a session with you as I'd not feel I would be treated quite the same as others you would feel more comfortable with. I thought the whole point of this teaching is to stop people making comments that make other feel less? Is this me understanding this wrong? This is the first video I have clicked on to help with my learning and it hasn't made a great impression tbh🤔
He’s making the point that we have an automatic tendency to feel more comfortable and understood by people who are “like us”. Him saying this from his own experience illustrates the point but is also central to the idea that you can’t address or fix a problem until you recognise that a problem exists.
