The Sound Couple - Venue has house sound and lights?

- The Sound Couple supports one of their favorite bands for a fundraiser event. When we arrive, we discover that the venue has an installed sound and light system that we were unaware of. We can't assume that this means it's available and the gigs are contracted to provide sound and lights. However, in some cases, it makes sense to ask questions when the logistics call for it. The space was tight and to use the house lights made a lot of sense. We didn't pursue the house sound, but the house lighting was a logical choice if possible. Truth is though, that we spent more time getting the lighting to work than it took us to simply use ours.
Tonight was a trial of putting the entire band on in-ears. They are in the process of budgeting for their own, but in the meantime, we are trying out some of our gear to start the transition. For in-ear mixes, we used the following:
PreSonus Earmix: www.presonus.c...
PresSonus HP2:www.presonus.c...
Donner EM1: www.donnerdeal...
We love our DeWalt MobileLock which busts Stacy going into the van!
www.dewaltmobi...
We use primarily PreSonus gear featuring:
PreSonus UC Surface
PreSonus CDL12
PreSonus CDL18s
PreSonus 32R
PreSonus SW5E
PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
PreSonus AVB-D16
Those quick release mic adapters are so nice for saving time and easily swapping mics 👍 great video!
Thanks for watching! Agreed- they have been a huge time saver. Makes you wonder, why didn’t I invent that?!?
You guys are amazing!, been also binge watching your content! Love your stuff!
Aaaahhh, we appreciate that!
Good gig I like Easy by the Commodores excellent work too watching from Auckland New Zealand
Awesome work guys love watching your work and can relate and appreciate your work as a fellow audio engineer from New Zealand keep it up guys keep safe God bless
Thank you so much. It is so cool to hear from people around the globe....never even a concept when first I, and then we, started the production company so long ago. We are really thankful that we can do this and never take a gig for granted.
Kia Orana from Weymouth South Auckland
I thought it was a great mix especially for the horn section. It really brought out that they were quality players working off good charts.
Thanks! We are really lucky to be able to work with a lot of great musicians!
A friend recommended your channel. I'll just say I'm enjoying them in general. The narration is spot on and filled with good information. Keep up the good work!
Glad to hear it! Appreciate the comment. That helps us know we are on the right track!
You guys are just too good with this!! ❤️
Thank you...we appreciate that very much!
Just discovered you on UA-cam this weekend and I've been binging your content. Keep up the postmortem sections at the end they are great learning experiences for your viewers and prove that most situations apply to all of us. (like musicians reactions to in-ears!; I am a bass player but also responsible for the band's sound when budget doesn't permit for skilled sound engineers.)
Thank you Larry...we really appreciate that. It's nice to hear what's working so we know what to focus content on. We try to highlight different elements with each gig between our standard bookends. Take it easy!
Awesome work guys
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. I just came across your page and love the content! I come from a performer background, and am making a leap to step into live sound reinforcement. It's certainly a lot more time consuming than the end I used to be on. Keep up the amazing work!
You're welcome Josh! Thank you for your interest - We hope some of this this info helps you out!
Great band too! Well done
Thanks!
Intresting how different production is between Texas and MN
Hopefully it is helpful and interesting?
You're one of the few people other than me who brings the Internet with them. everybody I ran into likes to run an isolated Network. Maybe it's just because I have Apple devices and they freak out when there's no Internet or maybe it's just that I like to be able to look things up between breaks.
Yes I also consider my audiovisual Control network to be a private Network and don't necessarily let others on unless absolutely necessary, I even have a guest network that's separate and isolated. Yes data is pricey, I got lucky and landed on a plan with Sprint that I think was 50GB with rollover and at some point they upped it to 100GB and now I can barely make a dent. It does have benefits like having all my devices connected they tend to go through less battery when they're not constantly searching for cell service.
I am pretty tech savvy and understand computer networking well so I am comfortable with configuration. The amount of times the Internet presence saves our butt and makes us look good is a regular occurrence.
AWESOME...!!!
Thanks!!
Interesting seeing you use Donner and Behringer in a professional capacity!
Functionality first!
Does that nighthawk ever have any issues?? I need a Wi-Fi hub to run Sereto DJ. Haven’t decided the best route yet.
It is a curse and a blessing. The biggest problem with it is that the plan limit is 15GB without being charged additional $10/2GB. Our devices are data hungry with all of the cloud syncing, etc, so we have inadvertently chewed through that quicker than you can blink. We have subsequently turned off all syncing for devices we use for gigs to avoid that. AT&T customer service is terrible (which I assume is true for all of them). The good is that the device itself works well and seems more stable than your phone hotspot.
Me again! Lol.... so when you are using the ear mix controllers and someone wants wireless, do you have to run the cat5 to the box then go back to a wireless transmitter in a rack somewhere with long trs cables? I only ask cause I am trying to accomplish this as well with the behringer gear and I built little custom boxes with the wireless units and the ear mix boxes on a stand, does that make sense? LMK. P.s. Another great video! Thanks for taking the time.
We will only provide wired in-ear mixes… which is something we have only started offering recently. To be honest, I am not sure this is even a service we should be providing (at no charge). It’ can be kind of a win-win, but for a big band, it tends to be the same amount of work, if not more than wedges. It sure helps the FOH mix though. At this time, if someone needs wireless, that’s on them. This band plans on acquiring their own in-ear system at some point, so we are assisting them through the transition which will include wireless.
Just a thought… For wireless, try an instrument transmitter and IEM receiver. This works well for my delay stacks. Put them on the same frequency, of course.
Are the donner housings plastic or metal. Seems like you got the last ones as there aren't any in amazon anymore :D Also I noticed you cut off the lows on the graphic EQ rather than using the dedicated low pass filter? Is there a certain reason for this?
The Donner housings are made of plastic. No specific reasons for cutting on the GEQ except for the fact that is how I have always done it. That said, I am not able to recall there being a LPF, on 32R (there is one for sure on 64s) but I think you may be referring to HPF.
@@thesoundcouple Yup, my bad HPF, been requesting Presonus to make a decent LPF for ages, but they haven't done so. The dedicated HPF should give you a larger cut comparing to GEQ.
What is that stylus that you use on your IPad?
I subbed
It's the Apple pencil...makes navigation so much easier and consistent.
Yep musicians love the personal mixers but they forget that they needed they'll learn how to mix which is entirely another art form. I like the headphone amplifier method better because then you still have the ability to pop into that AUX send and adjust things if needed. unfortunately then that requires some sort of tablet control device, I wish these companies would get this and make it an extension of the main mixers AUX's.
I worked with a band with the Behringer system but there's this level of complexity that it is not visible on the surface of the thing and you can't really see what's where.
Thanks for your comment....good insights!
Wounding why you did'nt use the venues house system it would of been alot easier for you I am also thinking of purchasing some Presonus CDL 12's and sub's I also seen a video where you had a Presonus Studiolive 3 Sc rackmount and your Yamaha Spx990 and what were the other components in your rack? Thinking of putting together a small protable rig like that I am hearing great stories about the CDL 12's and I like watching your videos and your setup is more compact then lugging a huge rig like the one I have. I have an L-Acoustic Kara Line Arrays and sub's with L-Acoustic LA8 4 ch digital amp rack with 4 LA 8's running 6 Kara Line Arrays per side. Foh console I am running a Digico SD8 48ch digital console and a Midas Heritage 2000 48 ch analog console with Klark Teknik graphic eq's with qcs powered stage wedges for monitors. The main house system I have sound awesome but for bar gigs to big to lug lol.
Hi Stan - we didn't know there would be "house system" in the venue. We didn't use it for a few reasons, such as; we were being paid by the band to provide a PA and we were not authorized to use it. The client rented the venue and the venue apparently did not include it in their list of available resources. That said, we were able to use the lights but by the time we found someone that knew how to turn them on, it would have been faster just to put our own...potentially the same could be said for the PA system. If we would went ahead and used the system, now I am the hook to make it work. We are always more comfortable running our own gear when there is no technical on-site to support us with their "house" gear.
The SPX-990 is the only other piece of gear besides our Furman power conditioner.
Did you think of unplugging it from the wall socket?
Sorry, I can't recall what you are referring too....but yes, power cycling a device can be a good troubleshooting step
@@thesoundcouple oh sorry. I meant the annoying light on the opposite wall.
@@sound4uaudiovideorecording927 Ahhhh...thanks for the reminder! We are back there again soon and hopefully we can get that addressed.
Why not pull the Powercon on the errant house unit?
Our patience with the whole situation was gone...
When you say generator, did you mean distro? I hope you don't use a generator inside a building. I don't know what part of the country you're in but that homemade distro they have there is illegal in most places. Why didn't you just plug your dmx output into the house light system and put together a quick patch? That would have been quicker than dragging in a light rig. That being said, I love watching your videos
Thanks for the suggestions Mark! Yes, if I said generator, I meant distro. I don't recall being concerned about the power...we meter it before we plug in. We are back for this event again this year, so we will need to discuss what our options are and if we want to do anything different.
Man, definitely would've used that house PA instead... Maybe supplement with your subs, as it didn't look like there was any in house? I'm not a massive fan of RCF, but they're definitely a whole different league above Presonus
Perhaps...We were hired to provide production and the house system was not part of the contract. We negotiated the lights, but even then, figuring out other peoples stuff can add more time and stress than it's worth. If we were to use the house system, this should have been determined prior to the day of. There was a guy that "kind" of knew what was going on, but he was ultimately couldn't figure out the lights and they had to call the guy that actually works with the system...a big hassle on this one.
@@thesoundcouple fair enough… I do lots of PA de jour tours where I’ll carry consoles, iem, and mic package, and you get pretty quick at figuring out other peoples rigs lol
@@dustinthiessen What are you using for line arrays you say the RCF's are not that good what would you recommended curious.
@@stanwood94 in fairness, I don’t actually own any PA anymore. I used to have a decent amount of EAW KF730, with UX8800 processing, and Lab Gruppen amps. They always sounded really good. You could probably find a second hand rig like that for quite reasonable money. I’d always recommend L’acoustics, and D&B as my favourite manufacturers, if you’ve got a better budget. You’ll meet any rider with either of those.
I’m about to do a small tour on EV XLD, so we’ll see how that goes…
As a Seller and installer I sold a lot of the Behringer P16M systems to schools and churches and so far no one likes them . WHY YOU ASK ? They can't get enough sound out of them . I have had some of the best guys work on the X32 and tell me they hate those . WHY YOU ASK ? Because they can't get enough sound out of them . I was told the same about the PreSonis ones . I wanted to ask you , WHY did you buy the Shure Big boy $ 8000.00 wireless mic system ? Just asking is all ... Keep having Fun .
Great question...It was an investment (we didn't pay $8000), but dealing with wireless issues is very frustrating and can make you look bad real fast. We frequently use 4 mics and to get the entire system into a 4spc rack that we can carry with one hand and pop front/back covers, plug in a cat 5 cable and go is well worth it. These mics sound great and are rock solid. I can recall only having 2 small drop out issues over the past three years over hundreds of shows. the Shure rechargeable batteries are the icing on the cake...8-9 hours of run time is crazy! We just turn them on and forget about them...that is the kind of gear we like and was one of the best investments we have made! We use them even when we don't need them, but the time they have saved us from running cables, etc. One of my favorite pieces of gear we own.
