Yey! A bridgerton reaction. So much change has happened from the books. I don’t know where to begin. 😂 But Penelope wanting to change herself wasn’t caused by frustration from what is happening in her life. Her confidence came to her gradually. And it all started because of Lady Danburry’s comment to her. Something like it’s nice to discover there we’re not exactly who we thought we were. This gave Penelope the boost to think that she could be so much more than a wallflower or a spinster. Pen’s friendship with Lady Danburry is the one thing I miss from the books. But not mad because Pen’s confidence from the show is partly because of Colin. 🥰

Netflix actually has the season split in half. First 4 episodes out on May 16th and the last 4 episodes out on June 13th, so you might want to adjust your release schedule.

I had to remind myself the show will be different from the book and since then I enjoyed it after my first initial disappointment. Love your reviews!

The stakes around LW are so much higher in the show than in the books so I was prepared for it to be very different, so I wasn't disappointed at all. Plus I read alot of Polin fan fiction so even if the show doesn't give me what I want, I can get it from there.
In the books, there's no Queen Charlotte character to be a threat, Penelope has had 12 years to mature and be at peace with herself and her life situation before her love story, and she has a Portia-approved little sister to distract Portia from bearing down so much on Penelope. LW has become more established by this point, so I think the ire she stirs up with her writing is more normalized with that time. I feel like half the angst that LW stirs up in the show is due to how relatively new she is. Book-LW has more time and printings to balance her hype-writing, like she does at the start of this episode, with her gossip-writing.
Eloise's...disregard[?] of her family is canon to the book. Not that she dislikes them, more that she's impulsive and forgets that her actions can have consequences for her family. I love that show-Eloise is living some of those consequences even if Francesca/Hyacinth never find out Eloise was going to Bloomsbury unchaperoned, in broad daylight, in the family-crested carriage, in the family colors, repeatedly to meet with an unmarried man, despite having sisters that want to marry and would be labelled loose with her, when she was inevitably seen. Book-Eloise's situation was rectified quietly and quickly.
In the book, I got the impression that Colin and Penelope were closer than Eloise and Penelope were but that might just be me forgetting things or faults in my interpretation.
About this episode specifically, when we meet book-Colin he's BEEN experienced and he's travelled ALOT [and written to Penelope ALOT...they meet when Pen is just shy of 16, she's 28 during their story I'm pretty sure] so this transition/growing up period we're seeing in this episode could totally have happened, we just don't see it in the book. Book-Colin said something like "I'm not getting married and I'm certainly not marrying Penelope Featherington" and it was to his brothers not to other bachelors, so it was softened I think by that, time, and it not being a direct dig at her. So the hurt their friendship is recovering from in the show is more pointed and more recent.
