  • Hampton Bay low voltage lighting is inexpensive in comparison to high-end lighting--but is it worth it? I have over 10 lights in two systems, and I'm constantly returning lights under warranty, or doing this simple repair if it's just wiring/connectivity issues. I'm hoping this video saves someone a trip to the store to return defective product. I've used this technique a half dozen times to get a seemingly broken light to work again.

I cut off the flimsy plastic connectors, strip off 1/2" of insulation, slide some shrink tubing over one wire, twist the wires together, solder them together, after a minute or so, slide the shrink tubing over the solder joint, then shrink the tubing with a
lighter. It keeps water out pretty well -- otherwise the wires inside the insulation get black and corroded.

Simply cut them off, as I do, twist the wires and use a waterproof wire nut. Simple and permanent.

Would dielectric grease act like an insulator and prevent corrosion?

Great idea! So long as you're tearing into the wiring, might as well. Of course the longevity of an application would be affected by conditions. Doing so might buy you few more months. I've had to perform this operation a few times on most of my lighting units.
