I've watched hours of videos on this because I can't get an electrician for love or money. I was really struggling to grasp it. This video switched a light on in my brain- finally! THANK YOU SO MUCH! 🙏👍💥 xox
Did basic electrical work many years ago, and decided to wire shed for light and power. This video was great revision on how to do it and made it easy to remind me what to do.. electrician who came to check it was happy with all that I had done.. thank you so much.. saved me a fortune. :)
My friend who's an electrician, said to give you a watch. He said your excellent, he wasn't wrong. Great video and teaching style was very easy to understand. Thanks
Hi John. Just want to write a thank you for this video. Your drawings and explanations are just at the right level for me. I've been replacing a light in my front room today and now understand what the wires do. I really the like the coloured Sharpie-drawn wires and the explanation of the current flow.
John. Thank you for such a straightforward explanation, without needless flamboyance or exuberance, and at a pace I can absorb what you're explaining. So very helpful and professional.
Very informative, and well done on simplifying something which has puzzled me for years. Got my head around basic lighting circuits within 24 minutes, perfect.
Thank you. I was one of those people that enthusiastically pulled all of the wires out of 8 ceiling roses without checking how they had been wired and totally baffled by the number of wires most of them had. You saved my day!
Did my city & guilds levels 1,2 & 3 some years back. By god, I wish I knew you back then!! The illustrations along with the calm, flowing commentary explaing each diagram to each circuit is bang on the money!! Just what beginner's need. At college it was thrown at you, moving at a fast pace along with all the science classroom shit (although that shit does have to be learned). Great teaching skills John simples but bordering genius.
I’d like to reinforce what others are saying JW. Really well explained and perfect with diagrams. I’ve used those to check stuff I’m looking at to get a better understanding. Keep up the good work on producing tutorials. If you ever get into considering a webinar on a chosen subject I’d sign up in an instant.
Hallelujah! Great explanation of domestic lighting circuits. It actually is a simple as you think it must be when someone explains it in 'laymans' terms. Thanks John!
Great work John bin in building trade over 20 years and I finally understand how to do a lighting circuit you should have been a shool teacher John you explain everything superbly
Been watching for a long time and I'm studying electrical installation at college from September. The videos the past couple days have been exactly what I need. Thanks John!
What an excellent video! This has actually saved me a lot of money. I had my ceiling plastered and the plasterer took the lights down but had no idea how to put them back.
Well after blowing a couple of fuses I managed to get one light working , I checked this video to connect the other light , worked a treat although it is very crowded , great information on you tube , and he explains it well , well done sir .
Super helpful and informative, and as previous commenters said, much better than trawling DIY forums for info. Thank you very much! I’m looking forward to the other videos in this series.
Honestly you made that so easy to understand, i am in the process of adding 10 x 4w ip65 led spotlight to my bathroom with a dual (trailing edge) dimmer switch, using the same power in for both circuits and you have made the whole thing very simple and straight forward. many thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Exactly 6mins in and I've paused this video to comment with: thank you for making this video! I now understand more about house light wiring (from what I've just watched) than I ever have over the last 36 years.
Excellent explanation John. I've watched a number of others, but yours is by far the clearest and most systematic. Am going to watch all three now. (Its also more appropriate to us in South Africa, than the American ones). Best regards.
This is like the promised land, JW, thank you so much for explaining this in a format that is easy to understand and straight to the point . It has always been a mystery, I have looked on a few sites and was completely baffled. I have always put off lighting projects because I didn't understand..... LET THERE BE LIGHT!!!! hahaha Thankyou
Great video explaining the loop lighting system to us DIY’ers who want to fit our own lights. Worth mentioning too that you can use a multi meter to identity the switched live and power in and out cables using the continuity function. This is a dead test with no power going to the circuit. Just connect your probes to the lives and when you get sound you know they are your power in and out. The third brown will be going to your switch. You should be able to see this cable in your ceiling so the blue will be your switched live. You can confirm this by connecting your probes to this brown and blue to hear a buzz for continuity but just be sure to operate the switch to put into the on position.
Great video. I've just completed my EAL Levels 2 & 3 electrical. In level 2 we were given diagrams to follow to wire lights, so that's what we did. We could have done with an explanation about what we were doing and why. Anyone should at least be able to follow a diagram, but, it's understanding why is more important. At the end of the year we had all our folders taken from us because in the past some people on the course (not necessarily in our college) had posted them on the net. This video, and many more of yours fill that knowledge hole. I very much appreciate them. Thank you.
'Only to discover there's far more wires that they think should be there'. That is exactly what happened, apart from I was fortunate enough not to rip it down first! Managed to get the job done after watching your video and think I understand why the light fittings in my house are different now. Thank you very much for your help, fantastic video.
Well done 2020 socket are very easy always had problems with the light you're the only one person who has shown phone correct and easy way of doing it thank you I have saved this video
Great job - very helpful. It made the connection for me (for the first time) between the theory of electrical circuits - which is easy, and the complicated business of wiring up a multi-terminal ceiling rose.
Obviously this is extremely basic stuff for you but you still explain it all so well with enthusiasm and without skipping "basic details which most professionals so because they take them as a given. Thanks buddy
Well explained John I wired up a loft light years ago which seemed complicated years later I’m wiring my summer house and now I understand it thank you 👍
Im not an electrician ...and I wouldnt ask one to do any work I thought for one second I could safely do myself. That said...I wouldnt touch anything without knowing for sure that what I am doing is correct ...and safe. This is an excellent video and even though I know there are endless videos on here for wiring lights THIS is the best one ...you do an excellent job of describing the process and I found your description at the beginning hilarious....very very good....I will complete my wiring tomorrow...thanks to this very helpful ..informative video. Thank you

Clear explanations, I do DIY and trained in appliance engineering with some experience in electrics and meters through appliances however your videos make it easy to understand more electric setups. Subscribed.
Very straight forward and well explained in principle, although in practice not as easy. When changing light fixtures or light switches, I find the best way to do so is by taking a photo of the existing connections before disconnecting and simply wiring them up the same way on the new light fixture or switch.
Cheers for this! I'm totally clueless when it comes to lighting! Iv recently blew two, and your example of what people do, at the start of this video was spot on. Your vid has made this so clear to me, (Which is not easy) Im still not looking forward to installing a new ceiling light as the way it is set up still tries to confuse me. Im hoping that with this video i have now learned enough to figure it out. We have been without the main light in the front room for four years due to my bro blowing it. Using lamps was fine for us, but after recent decoration now is the time to give it ago again. Thanks again. Best vid by far.
wow... you tube has everything. i did not expect to get results for my query. or if i did then i did not expect to get anything related to my query. thank you i will watch these like my life depends on it.
this is such a useful instruction, i remember there use to be "windows for dummies" this is more helpful than any other instructions we may get on here, well done John...
I know there is a lot more involved with the theory side and such when they teach it at college. But this practical explanation I started to get after the first 5 minutes of this video, and I'm not the brightest bulb in the circuit. Thank you for the videos very instructive.
brilliant info, thank you! You've given me the confidence to have a go at wiring new downlighters into the ceiling as an additional circuit to the central pendant light.
1st year apprentice and college got shut because of covid the week before we learnt lighting circuits 🙄 but these videos are really helpful and really easy to understand. Legend 👍🙌
John, thank you, I done the same wiring in the shed years ago, I am now old and apparently cant remember. Could not get it working , should have taken a photo of the connections but I did not. I then had a light bulb moment, ah You Tube. Saw your video, and after 2 hours of mishaps it took all of 8 minutes and up and running. Big thank and let there be light.
Thank you. After watching and taking notes and copying the diagrams I have been able to replace the ceiling rose in the utility room with a downlighter.
Fantastic video JW. Pictures really do paint 1000 words. Methodical and calming approach to teaching. I look forward to viewing more of the same. Thanks.
This is the best ever explanation of lighting connections in UK The first method used called 3 plates which is used in domestic installations The 2 method which is really good as well but I don't know if it is correct if I call it zero plate because nothing is connected to ceiling rose As far as I know, 2 plate method which is connected through ceiling rose and switch is used in commercial and industrial installations. Thank you so much for the videos
I know you created these years ago and probably not actively following activity on it, but I just wanted to say thanks! Been using your videos to upskill myself as a new homeowner doing DIY projects.
Thank you JW great video with fantastic precise explanation with fenominal diction unlike some from the other side of the pond. As I watch this I note that 171 people dislike this whereas 2.9K like it. I think that says all.
Thank you ever so much for making this video - You explain stuff so clearly. Now I know how to add another light and switch in the laundry room. You're the best !
Yesterday, I attempted to replace an aged bathroom light. I kept the reds together and the blacks together. Then the switch at the CU goes off. Then I found your video. Your diagram was not only crystal clear, but later I understood what I did wrong in the first place. I corrected it, and replicated the schematic of a rose using terminal blocks. I also taped the dated wires with new colours (brown and blue). I cannot thank you enough. If you have a Patreon account, do direct me to it.
I'm not sure which I enjoy the most from JW's commentary, the extremely useful learning experience or the subtle dryness of his humour.
I've watched hours of videos on this because I can't get an electrician for love or money. I was really struggling to grasp it. This video switched a light on in my brain- finally! THANK YOU SO MUCH! 🙏👍💥 xox
I’ve just come across this video, it is undoubtedly the best explanation I’ve ever seen for any subject!! Many thanks.
I watched 10s of videos about this simple thing and you are the only guy showing this properly with explanation! TY!
Did basic electrical work many years ago, and decided to wire shed for light and power. This video was great revision on how to do it and made it easy to remind me what to do.. electrician who came to check it was happy with all that I had done.. thank you so much.. saved me a fortune. :)
thanks again John if ur listening, its a Godsend to have these videos some mornings before doing small electrical job.
Just what i wanted to know, nothing needlessly explained or made overly complicated. Simple and clear information. Great vid John.
May I say your voice is very easy on the ear, which makes listening to your video all the more enjoyable.
Thanks John as always. Newly qualified electrician here and have learnt so much from your videos over time.
This guy has me in stitches as well as teaching me invaluable information. Brilliant and thank you.
Thanks so much for explaining clearly how the live and switch circuits work. I managed to fix my mistake and now have light again! ❤
My friend who's an electrician, said to give you a watch. He said your excellent, he wasn't wrong. Great video and teaching style was very easy to understand. Thanks

Thank you very much John. This was very helpful
Fantastically logical, clear, unadulterated. Many thanks John.

Wiring diagram to mk masterseal plus 2 gang 1-way light switch
how'd it go? did you become an electrician?
Twice I've had problems wiring a light in my new build, and twice this video has solved my problems. Thank you!
What an excellent video! This has actually saved me a lot of money. I had my ceiling plastered and the plasterer took the lights down but had no idea how to put them back.
This is a fantastic explanation of circuits in the UK. I loved it and will bookmark it for future reference.

Super helpful and informative, and as previous commenters said, much better than trawling DIY forums for info. Thank you very much! I’m looking forward to the other videos in this series.
Thank god people like this exist. Straightforward quality information, it makes everything come into focus now. Thanks.
John Ward I agree 👍
I agree you are great teacher

Best explanation with no baffling! Quality.
As always, clearly spoken, written and explained. Many thanks John!
Very well explained, no need to waste time on those useless trade forums where they argue amongst eachother!

Wish I had had this guy teaching me this stuff at school!
