This was a super useful review, so I bought one (the US version, via Amazon) and it arrived two days later.
Look really well made - lots of attention to detail, useful features, all the cords you could need.
It has the only power brick I've ever seen with a *fan*, and though it's marked as producing 25.2V at .8A, it has to really be 8A, corresponding to ~200W. I measured 25.5v with no load, which is plenty in the range.
It's marked as having a power factor of 0.95, which I think is really good, though I haven't measured it or the actual current draw. Trying to figure out how to check out the sine wave but need to tread carefully with 110V line voltage on my Keysight scope.
Mine says a two year warranty, which is surprising.
I'll be sending this with friends who are camping this weekend, and it may well enable *me* to go camping if it can run my CPAP machine directly via the DC supply rather than running it through the inverter and then to the CPAP's power brick.

And you wouldn't have to deal with the noise of the generator. But if you follow John's excelent advice and get a used delivery van of the 7.5 ton variety you've got shit loads of chassis rail space and you can just put tons of batteries there and an inverter. Also much safer in my opinion than a towed caravan. The amount of crashed caravans going south on M5 is stunning.

Nice. One of these paired up with one of Bluetti's 200W solar panels would make an excellent compact and lightweight power solution for camping, assuming one is realistic about its capabilities i.e. capacity, maximum power output etc.
I could even see it being worthwhile for emergencies at home (assuming you can set it and solar panel up somewhere that isn't underwater).

DC-DC & primary battery isolator needed if charging while driving?
PV via built-in regulator or external MPPT regulator better?
If either or both above charging in use, does device prioritise power from external source or does it go through/across battery?

After the freak storm that hit Sydney's Northern Beaches last December, we had no power for three days. We have solar on the roof but no battery, so can't use the solar when the power is out 🙄. Anyway, I have this HP UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply for a server) that has been sitting new in the box in the garage for years as I never implemented it and no longer have a server at home. I was going to chuck it but then realised I could use it during blackouts for anything - not just a server. It's basically the same thing as these Bluetti power stations - but not as portable.

We’ll be heading to dingo piss creek with either our hard floor camper or 25ft trailer sailor - assuming DPC is in northern NSW and can be identified amongst thefloodwaters - with the assistance of a bluetti 750w power station. Thats the point - it can be swapped quickly and safely between vehickes and sorts out the 240v and electronics. We have 2 storage 12 v batteries in the boat which is great for pumps, instruments but these batteries get challenged by inverters and 240v demands its best to leave them alone and use the power station

The 200P model has 2 kWh capacity. Here in Europe it costs EUR 2K
2 64Ah lead acid batteries (=2kWh), a 2 KW inverter and a few USB chargers will set you back EUR 400. EUR 1600 is a bit rich for me for a nice plastic housing and a display.

  • @deanrhodenizer938

Thanks John, great review. A couple of minor points. First, a 1 HP electric motor delivers 1 HP of output. To do so it requires more than 746 watts of input as the motor is not 100% efficient. Typically, single phase induction motors run in the >70% efficiency range so they run fairly hot when fully loaded. Clearly you were not loading your drill press to this extent. Second, Picard’s signature phrase is “Engage” (for example set course to blah, blah blah at warp X - then with his finger raised - engage). I don’t deny that the term “energize” is frequently used to signal one is ready for transporter engagement, but it is not his signature phrase. Although energize rings true when referring to a power source.

    • @ChristopherHallett
      @ChristopherHallett 2 роки тому +2

Firstly, non-industrial electrical equipment (like Johns drill press and angle grinder) is rated by its power DRAW, not its power output. Secondly, what is John talking about in this video, if not a power source?

Man, i don't understand any of that?!?! Does this thing plug into my ciggie lighter in the car and power my fridge for a few days or not?

    • @deanrhodenizer938
      @deanrhodenizer938 2 роки тому +5

@@DernRern I am a little reluctant to wade in here but my answers to your questions are YES and DEPENDS. According to the Bluetti’s website the EB55 has a storage capacity of 537 Watt-Hours. This means that the unit can theoretically supply 100 Watts for 5.37 hours or approximately half that wattage for twice as long. These numbers are not 100% precise because that faster you take the energy the less total energy you will get because of battery internal resistance and inverter inefficiency. To your first question - Can you plug the unit into your cigarette lighter port for charging. Answer - an unqualified yes. But keep in mind that a typical vehicle cigarette light port is fused at 10 amps so you can only get a maximum of 120 watts from such a port. John reported that charging in this way will take approximately 6 hours. Please think of this like drinking from a small diameter straw. You can’t get much liquid through it quickly but if you sustain the effort you can a great deal delivered. To your second question. Can I connect my fridge to this unit? Answer yes, provided that the fridge in question does not exceed the specifications of the EB55 unit. That is, the fridge must draw less than 700 watts of continuous output when the fridge is running. Additionally, if the fridge uses less than 537 Watt-Hour in a three-day period then the answer to your second question is yes. If you want to find out just how much energy your fridge uses in three days, then connect it to a Watt-Hour metering device and find out. To the bigger question that you didn’t directly ask - If I connect the EB55 unit to a live cigarette lighter power source and connect your fridge to the EB55 power output can I run this sustainably as long as my cigarette lighter has power available? Answer yes, provided the average power drain from the fridge is less than can be replenished by charging from the cigarette lighter port. Again, you can verify if this is true but monitoring power in and power out. Alternatively, you could do your own experiment. Verify the maximum fridge load is less than 700 watts, then connect the EB55 unit (preferably start with a fully charged unit) to a 12 V power source (cigarette lighter) and the fridge to one of the power sockets. Monitor the unit over several days. If the EB55 does not drop below an acceptable level of charge (arbitrarily 25%) then you can assume you can “float” the unit from a cigarette lighter power source while powering your fridge continuously.

With more grid tied solar power systems being installed (much cheaper than stand alone battery systems and more logical for many if the national grid is right outside your door), a portable power bank which can grab that 'free stuff' sounds logical to me. That said, are there any portable systems that can 'plug' into the home/ business which can monitor the amount of power being exported to the national grid - at fractions of the price you pay to get it back again - and charge themselves to optimize the system?
In New Zillund - ESG, the Great Reset, Jacinda Davos-Bildaberg Land - the privatised power networks charge you on average 30c/kwh but pay only 8c.
This is where a 'smart' EV toy - boat, caravan, motor home or portable power brick may be more cost effective.

The main issue with these type of power units is the lack of high capacity DC to DC charging. e.g. the EB55 takes 7 hours to charge via the 12v ciggy plus whereas a dedicated DC DC charger will charge at 20 to 40 amps depending on the model which is substantially quicker. As stated by John, these products most definitely have a use depending on the user's requirements.

A point of interest how long would it run a Engel in 40+C at -15c ? Either on ac or dc . My prototype duel battery system has had about 25 years of development so far it may be heavy and bulky, 2x 75ah gel batteries with room to add more capacity a nice pure sine inverter and dc to dc charger with solar input and a infinite amount of USB and Anderson plugs . All that and it is still less than one of those modular units . My trade background is diesel fitter . Built in redundancy is a must if using constantly. These units would possibly suit weekend worriers

    • @ianwilliams8448
      @ianwilliams8448 2 роки тому +1

Your gel batteries probably weigh more, and have potential issues if discharged quickly. A simple maths equation will answer your question about capacity. A point with this is that someone may save 25 years of R and D. And, you don't really have an infinite amount of USBs, really. Not ragging on your setup mate, but there's horses for courses.

Having said that, the EB70 is a brilliant unit and runs my EvaKool fridge for 42 hours and still has power left. It powers an electric blanket in the camper for freezing cold nights and runs my wife's hair dryer, which is how I got approval for the purchase. :) It charges the drone and power tool batteries (electric chain saw and drill) and runs the lap top, charging it in the process. I'd say it's worth the price if you depend on the unit or need it frequently but if it's for occasional use only (as is my case), I would consider the cheaper options. One thing that frustrates me is that they don't have a unit that sits between this one (at 700W rated output) and their K2 laptop charger (at 130W). Their range leaves out the middle area of high-powered laptop users who would like to get a bit more than the 2-3 hours the inbuilt battery provides but requires around 200W input. Hey John, I hope you see this - I was looking at putting a dual battery system in my Triton. This looks like a good solution, 200AH Lithium batteries I was looking at were between 1500-$2300.
The EP150 is $~1400 and looks to be 400ah by the ad. Are these capacities comparable and why is it so cheap, it includes an inverter too.
Thanks for the video and you did a good job with the review.

    • @armstrong5787

The ep150 has a 101AH battery. To work it out it's the rated capacity watt hour (1500wh) divided by the volt (14.8v) = 101.351ah. I'm also thinking of putting one in my triton. I'm just not too sure if it can run a fridge constantly and be charged up by a 200watt roof mounted solar panel at the same time.

I asked this in another video, but it's more pertinent here.
To charge an AC200P on the go (let's say I'm heading to Cape Dingo for 2 weeks).
It seems that it's a 100W charge rate, from my ciggie lighter outlet, that's not a great deal, seeing I'll only be driving 4 hours a day.
I'm concerned that I'll be pulling more power out than I'm putting in. And I'm not super impressed that I can't use only 1 solar panel to charge it, so can't really do a small amount of charge for a couple of hours in the morning and afternoon.
For what it's worth, I've already looked at all the units and the 150 looks the way to go, I don't use more than 1000W when camping.

Portable power stations such as these would make conventional hard wired 4X4 dual battery systems obsolete if they could charge as quickly via DC power. Are there any that come with a DC to DC charger like a Redarc BCDC or Victron Orion or Renogy etc? Can you buy a DC to DC charger separately and plug it into a portable power station (like the EB 55 or the AC 200P) to improve it's DC charge rate? I imagine that you really would want a good portable solar array to make best use of these units whilst visiting Dingo Piss Creek, but if they can ever work out how to charge them to full capacity via DC in say 3 or 4 hours of driving, then I would see no reason to install a conventional dual battery system in yo 4X4.

hi john I have a request,..... could you do a vid on how the largest model sold in aus handles the start up current of a water blaster.
sadly their largest model isn't sold in aus for some reason.
, probably the third world county status thing again.
I have a gerni 3000 with 1400 watt motor, so, as I dont think its soft start it could draw 5 to 7 times that every time you load it up.
I know a 3.7 kiva Chinese gen set wouldn't even turn it over motor wise, I have thought I might buy another Honda 2200 watt and the device to run two together.
giving 4200 watt I believe, as there is some losses in the joining device.
but maybe the largest bluetti could run a smaller model, say 800 watt motor water blaster.
its so much better to clean my boat with a water blaster as it only uses 7 or so liters per minute. important on a live aboard with only 600 liter water tank.
most jobs wouldn't be more then 30 minutes and as I have 2000 watts of solar panels it would be charging at the same time .
anyway it would be fun to see how large a water blaster it could runm, I would think a far bit smaller then my 1400 watt job
apologies for any grammar fopars. ..... as I have stated previously here.

John please do a review of personal breathalysers, i find myself in a situation of needing one, and there does not appear to be a great deal of info around. I understand there are two types, a semiconductor type and a fuel cell type. The fuel cell type is much more reliable. I have read a few instructions that the party being breathalysed needs to abstain for 20min before test, otherwise it will affect the calibration of the unit. causing it to become inaccurate. im not sure in which way. i need somthing that’s reasonable accurate, for the purposes of determining if the person has any levels before collecting and returning the kids. they have to be clear. Obviously i dont want to purchase something twice. i want something robust. Something that can take a test after a person necking a drink shortly before testing and possibly damaging the unit. i have a-lot of faith in your no nonsense factual approach and would dearly appreciate you consideration on this subject. This is about what I see as design flaw that can worked around if you are aware of it. Bottom line: don't overload your EB55 or you won't be able to use it until you do a full recharge, even if it was full before the overload. Recently I took my new, fully-charged EB55 on a car camping overnight with the intention of boiling water for dinner with a 500-watt-rated AC portable kettle (that actually only draws about 450 watts) as well as running a small 200-watt AC ceramic heater and a 90-watt AC electric throw blanket (not all at the same time). I successfully boiled water for my dehydrated dinner and tea. Then I decided to boil some more water for another cup of tea and plug in the 200 watt heater at the same time. That should be about 600-650 total watts of draw, easily manageable by the EB55, right? Both appliances worked for about 10 seconds, and then the EB55 shut down and the display indicated it was fully discharged (no blue bars showing and the red low-battery warning icon showing). All I had done prior to this with the fully charged EB55 was boil water in the kettle for about 10 minutes, so the battery was still at 80% or more. I thought it might reset itself in a few minutes but it never did and I was not able to use it again on this trip. The display still showed zero charge (no blue bars) with the red low battery icon showing. When I got home, I recharged it from wall current. I then recreated the same scenario with the 400-500w kettle + the 200w heater together and the same thing happened. Thus, when I overload the EB55 even slightly, it not only shuts down, it indicates completely discharged and is thus useless, if I'm out on the road, until I can charge it up (either from wall current or via a lot of driving). This seems like a major design flaw. The unit rightly self-protects under overload but, to me, it should either automatically reset after a certain amount of time or have a reset button. For it to go from 80% full to zero after a short overload, becoming useless, makes no sense. Bluetti offered me a replacement and the new unit does exactly the same thing. Bluetti also said their technicians have figured out a fix, which will be implemented in newer models, later this year I think. I am wondering about two things: 1) if other people have this same problem with the EB55, it completely discharging to zero once it shuts down due to an overload and 2) if Jackery and other power station brands behave the same way.

Hi Jeff, I had exactly the same issue with my EB55. It is supposed to just shut down and show an overload message if you exceed 700w. However, I was using a toaster (that was drawing under 700w) and the unit shut down and showed zero charge (no blue bars) and the low voltage message, as you also found. Perhaps there was a spike that took it over 700w but I don't know for sure. It had been running the toaster just fine on a number of occasions before that. Similarly, I could not reset it and carry on, even though it would have been close to fully charged., and I also found that you need to start recharging it for it to come back to life. Strange quirk indeed, and it can leave you in the lurch if you are out camping somewhere at night!
Interesting that you had that response from Bluetti. I have explained the issue to Bluetti but they have not indicated that it is a known issue with the current model and have not yet offered a replacement. Perhaps it is because I'm already on my second unit due to the first one failing (with another unrelated issue)!

These power boxes are very pretty and I guess practical to a degree BUT they are all in one, which is both good for space saving and simplicity but BAD if something goes wrong. It means you lose all functionality not just part of it and you have to start again from scratch. Having separate battery, charger and inverter means that you only have to replace one of those components if something goes poo poo. Using one for a month really isn't much of a test IMHO. Gear like this needs to be tested out in the boonies for 6-12 months before any real assessment on suitability could be made. Exposure to heat, dust, corrugations, numerous charge cycles and all the unpleasant stuff that can go along with travelling, would be the minimum I would want to see in a review before thinking about buying one.

Having repaired many solid state inverters, I have my doubts about reliability in all situations. Convenient when they work, but it only takes a split second spike from an inductive or capacitive load to blow all the MOSFET's. Output from an inverter is often assumed to be as rugged and powerful as that from a domestic power point, when it is not. For this reason, I'd also steer clear of so called "Inverter" type petrol generators.

This happens for both input and output circuits and different devices doing the charging and draw (12 volt circuits). It comes up with 'short' message on the display. If I turn off, disconnect and try again it is all ok. Seems to be an intermittent fault and not related to the device it is connected to. I have tried to contact Bluetti Australia with no success whatsoever. Their website does not give a phone number, only an email. I have sent messages and have not had a reply. Also sent an email to the return email address that dealt with my order....silence! I wonder if they actually have an office in Australia. They do not produce oxygen as a cumbustion by product, but the electrolyte makes some highly toxic substances when burnt or exposed to water. Ether of those two conditions should be unlikely, but it is important to understand that symptoms may not show up for hours after exposure.
