  • One of the biggest reasons Sleep Token blew up is a bit of an analysis about music as a whole and how metal is oftentimes approached. I go over one of the least-talked about reasons Sleep Token have garnered so much acclaim and attention in recent memory. But why do you think they have gotten to the point they have?

    I wanted to dive into the one big reason I've noticed as to why Sleep Token got to being one of the biggest names in modern metal. Whether you like them or not, why do you think Sleep Token have gotten this big?! Let me know down below; I'd love to hear your opinions on this topic. But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

    I have a very odd enjoyment for Sleep Token's music. The thing is that before i got into them, i was already getting into relatively progressive and genre-bending music, but even as I've gained more knowledge of the styles they borrow from I still enjoy them.
    Like, okay, sure, i get why someone would hear them and think that they borrow from surface-level elements of different genres because, well, they kind of do, but they're still able to bring in their own spin and flair to these elements and make their songs feel greater than the sum of their parts for the most part, at least in my opinion.
    Plus I do remember when their previous album, This Place Will Become Your Tomb, came out and I listened to that thing a lot while going out for night-drives which honestly felt really theraputic. Their atmosphere is just perfect for that.

      Yeah honestly as someone who isn't the biggest fan I'd be lying if I said I didn't have quite a few songs from both Tomb and Eden on my playlist(s). It's one of those brainless soundtracks that can really embody a vibe and you captured that perfectly at the end there--have shared a lot of those same moments, honestly. I think they get a lot of hate for the wrong reasons personally!

    I'll always have a special appreciation for Sleep Token, I remember seeing them play to 100, maybe 150 people in 2019 as the first of 3 bands opening for Issues and have followed them since then and saw them go from a small cult following to the biggest metal band in the world rn, which is not something I can say for a lot of artists.
    Beyond that I just genuinely enjoy their music a lot and think they're a phenomenal gateway band into a lot of different genres

      I remember seeing them on the tour too, except I have been a fan since before they played a single show in 2017 when I came across the music video for Calcutta on Basick Records UA-cam channel.

    To add to this, even though I have not heard a single song from Sleep Token, the execution of combining the different genres can also be its own skill in production/songwriting that nobody seems to realise. This is coming from a tech-death guitar player.

    It may be out of ignorance, but Sleep Token’s Euclid is one of the most beautiful and well-written songs I’ve ever heard. If this isn’t actually an original-sounding song, what is a song that might give me that same feeling of “wow, this sounds brand-new and absolutely gorgeous”?

    • @TheMetalTempestYT
      @TheMetalTempestYT  29 днів тому +1

      Honestly, Yndi Halda's record Enjoy Eternal Bliss or Saor's album Forgotten Paths have both given me those feelings. If you're into really slow stuff, Drown's record Subaqueous is up there too. But it's all relative and I can say Take Me Back To Eden (the song) gave me those vibes too!

    sleep token reminds me of issues, they both mess around with different genres but at the same time they mix it and blend it so well. Not a lot of bands can pull that off.

    • @levhen
      @levhen 29 днів тому

      because of this its a no brainer, especially since a lot of bands are too afraid to experiment or let alone when they do they don't do it too well.

    In this age of the algorithm pushing very similar bands, the power of something different is magnified. I’m not going to say best ever, but I will stand on the most interesting thing I’ve seen in a while. The lyrics really hit hard for me, I envy the life of someone who is meh on that.

    I admit, I have no idea about sleep token, I know about 3 songs, but I believe they're famous because it's a way to get into metal as you said mostly, because I've seen them in playlists that are like "today's top metal" so people who are getting into metal are interested, because of the sound that combines a lot of stuff(plus electronic music) and also the looks may be a part of why people are interested in sleep token specifically

    I respect your take on them and what I’m about to say is not against anything you said or anybody else’s opinions on them or anything. I just don’t care. They make great music (obviously my own opinion) if I hear music that I can like I will listen to it regardless of what anyone else thinks about it. Sleep Token has undeniably great musicians playing in it. I think the metal community is a weird place. It’s almost like a lot of people in it are trying to be monolithic when it doesn’t have to be.

    I really liked The Summoning enough that I went to listen to the album. I made it most of the way though it before I quit. I wasn't really a fan of the other songs, especially the lyrics. Still, I do listen to The Summoning and have listened to a few other songs by them. I don't necessarily like like them or hate them. They just sometimes have good songs and sometimes they don't. That's it.

    • @ChaseBlasingame

      That’s unfortunate. The past few songs in the album - Rain, Take Me Back to Eden, and (especially) Euclid - are some of the best in the album, IMO.

    I personally don’t mind them. They deliver a very cool atmosphere whenever I’m walking out alone in the dark. I think Vessel has great vocals and I do appreciate the experimental sound by mixing electronic metal, pop and rap together. Whether or not people think it is incomprehensible nonsense, I believe that’s meant to be the point given how the band presents themselves with their Lovecraftian aesthetic. I found it very unique and appealing personally, but I can totally see why other people wouldn’t be a fan of this kind of music.

    We can't expect people to just jump into a style of music that takes a type of tolerance we all know people aren't expected to just like. When a "normie" does appreciate anything about it, I feel like it's a win. Experimentation is fun, finding out what works and don't. Whether it's genres or "breaking the rules" of how instruments are played, from 8-string djent notes to "lead bass" music.

    Nice apology (in the explain/defend sense, rather than "I'm sorry"). Ubiquity isn't exactly a new thing for Heavy music. Metallica had it with the black album, Ghost, Grunge, early Hair Metal, and even going back to (Don't Fear) The Reaper (play that song for a 14 year old pop princess some time, and watch her whole face drop), and all those have served as gateways to The Heavy. It isn't the blending that is problematic, it's the degree of contrivance that isn't even hidden. That is the problem right there, as almost in their entirety Pop and other mainstream forms of music are put out with the same deliberation based upon sales, rather than creative spirit. If it opens people's eyes to the possibility offered by music written in minor keys, with the right amount of distortion, and a concentration on story, feeling, and spirit, rather than sales, that's a wonderful thing, but I shall remain a wee bit skeptical.

    Here's what i will give to them they are good musicians and have memorable moments. They lack memorable songs and arrangements. Vessell has a good voice it's just melodramatic and whiney. Sleep token is kind what Periphery were in 2010. Now what gets me is the pretentious lore and annoying marketing campaign . I don't hate them as much as U think Bands like LOATHE, Greyhaven, Vola and tesseract do it better.

    Nah, Sleep Token is absolutely perfect as a band. Vessel's voice is the best clean vocals I've ever heard, the nostalgic feel of similar sounds to metalcore bands I've listened to in the past. Their balancing of multiple types of music into one is absolutely incredible and if you don't like them just because they're "overproduced" y'all need to get over yourselves and stop meat riding other bands over Sleep Token. Y'all are obviously just butthurt gatekeepers who are mad a band like Sleep Token SKYROCKETED in popularity out of nowhere unlike so many other bands.

They are extremely talented musicians that make music for people to listen to. It's simple really, music is subjective, you either like it or you don't. This many millions of people who bought up all the tickets to their sold out world tour obviously really like them. I'm one of them. But I understand they're not for everyone. But who gives a shit!?!
