A mashup of Coltrane's "Mars" and Sunn O))) "Rabbit's Revenge", both amazing in their own right. If only these two monolithian soundsmiths could have collaborated!
@The game was rigged from the start I what hes talkinf about is the phenomenon where if you play any melody reaaaaally fast (like 50000bpm or something) it turns into a sound wave.
This sounds like the awakening of a Satanic sea-giant from a 10,000 year sleep. It's weird stumbling upon this because I've been into both Sunn and Interstellar Space lately.
This is just like when I sit back to listen to my Coltrane, and then an unrelated piece of music starts automatically playing in my browser, and I can't find the goddamn tab to shut it off.
Of all of the Coltrane pieces, you HAD to pick my favorite one and combined it with a standout from one of my favorite Sunn 0))) albums. This is brilliant!
I wrote a piece of music similar to this called 'music for drone group and free jazz' . I guess I wasn't the only that thought free jazz and drone worked together.
The sheet music? If anything it is more of a graphic score and directions. Think John Zorn or an Earle Brown piece. In terms of drone and free jazz, it can very much goes off of feeling. When I used to play free improv guitar in a free jazz band, a lot of the shit I was playing was based on feeling, which I think, is better than written compositional music. I'm for composing music in standard musical notion, I do it for the most part, but things like drone and free music, I just give very minimal instructions, much like John Zorn's game pieces.
As Kyle Broflovski would say: "Holy shit, DUDE!" Now, if only this Drone outfit could get Robert Fripp to do some Coltrane-like riffing on his guitar for a recorded track and call the piece "Coltrane" that would be pretty awesome
Just letting you know that this has been shared on a rock webzine in Portugal! And I love it, but I predict that I won't be listening to this while I'm drunk, that would be the real mess.
Amazing work! I heard this in the morning again and again. A trip around the galaxy. Keep with your great work. A big hug from Colombia. Beautiful picture.
It's like Coltrane is fighting for his life.
Rui Pacheco that's so sad
Hadn't thought of it like that... But true
You know what, I bet Coltrane would've loved this. Jazz is all about this sort of neat experimentation.
neato ^^
Huge overlap between Jazz and Experimental metal in both directions. So many cool albums now have a sax or piano solo or something.
Adam Neely brought me here, and I'm really happy he did.
Link?
via what?
That's why I'm here too.
I can't remember whether it was Adam Neely who brought me here first.
Adam Neely gang!
Gonna play this to my therapist next time she asks how I'm feeling
how it feels to chew 5 gum
on acid ...
*You have been promoted to Supreme Leader.
@@davelanciani-dimaensionx You aren't wrong
Sunn's Alice is a tribute to John Coltrane's wife. Now there's this... the mother of all mashups.
It is a tribute to Alice Coltrane, who is not only Coltrane's second wife but a talented pianist, organist, harpist, singer and composer...
@@nicolaschauvelot I just wish I heard her music sooner...
I changed my name to Alice because of that song.
2:54 it feels like coltrane is playing to the drone changes here, the phrasing matches perfectly
Absolutely one of the most realised Lovecraftian soundscapes I’ve ever heard.
Hey, John Coltrane's grand-nephew Flying Lotus retweeted this! Does anyone think that FlyLo and Sunn O))) could do a collaboration together?
FlyLO)))
He''s his NEPHEW?!
Now THAT would be one for the ages! Peace.
Actually Alice Coltranes's nephew
CosmO)))gramma
i can't decide whether this is the most insane thing ever or most genius.
+dreamscapejanitor Great Art is sometimes both
Yes.
+dreamscapejanitor No bravery without foolishness, no genius without madness.
+dreamscapejanitor FYI those things aren't mutually exclusive
Agreed.
It's not drone metal, it's technical progressive blackened stoner deathcore'n'roll jazz fusion, get your genres straight.
Dr. Cheeki Breeki I’m genre fluid.
lol well clearly you have no clue what jazz is...or fusion, or Metal or even music or anything worth listening tto
for someone with a pfp of an adult comedy show, you have no sense in comedy :)
@@nasticanasta Why have you capitalised 'metal', there?
Hahaha haha
If Sunn O))) unironically released this I would say it's their best work yet.
This is amazing! Not usually a fan of jazz, but I must admit, Coltrane goes really well with drone metal apparently.
If you like slow, incremental, and meditative music (like drone metal)- try avant-garde jazz trio 'The Necks'.
This is still one of the most insane mashups I've ever heard
PRO TIP: make sure Sunn and Co)))ltrane are in the same key
Lars Ulrich: Pro Tip. It's in 4/4.
@Nick Knight Beats Yeah it is, pitch becomes rhythm and vice versa. You can play a tempo is essentially a really slow pitch.
Who cares about the key, it sounds great.
@The game was rigged from the start I what hes talkinf about is the phenomenon where if you play any melody reaaaaally fast (like 50000bpm or something) it turns into a sound wave.
What key
It's been 5 years since I first heard this track and it's still most legendary mashup I've ever herad
I love this, it's weirdly catching haha.
This sounds like the awakening of a Satanic sea-giant from a 10,000 year sleep. It's weird stumbling upon this because I've been into both Sunn and Interstellar Space lately.
Bop Bop Perono you afraid to name-drop the One from R’lyeh? I feel ya.
How the fuck did you get the idea to mix Coltrane and Sunn O))), and why does it sound so great? I love it!
IMAGINE IF SUNN 0))) AND COLIN STETSON COLLABORATED
Or Mats Gustafsson or Peter Broetzmann...
Holy hell, that fast paced drums with these demonic riffs almost make it sound like black metal sometimes
Maybe I'm the perfect audience. I LOVE this!
Drone and free jazz are two genres I have almost no exposure to.
This...this was perfect. Such a soundscape is created.
this is peak music student youtube
thank you for this, i've been writing my first novel trying to find non distracting music and
this is exactly what i've been listening to
The greatest musician of the last 100 years with some top tier drone. GOLD.
Years after finding this insanity, I still have to come back for more every once in a while. Absolutely brilliant!
this is seriously one of the best things I've ever heard on youtube
5 years later! I'm just listening to this now! Cheers from Toronto.
This is just like when I sit back to listen to my Coltrane, and then an unrelated piece of music starts automatically playing in my browser, and I can't find the goddamn tab to shut it off.
Sunn just shared this on their fb page
Everyone is super hyped and I just watch "unavailable on iphone".
+plvarnier I love that song
Inorite
+plvarnier "Unavailable On Phone ft. Insufficient Data".
This is just perfection. It reminds me in some ways Shining when they REALLY let it go
Basically it's King Crimson circa '74.
We seriously need more of this, this is musical genius in it's finest
Thanks for the link Adam
this doesn't work the whole way through, but there are moments and minutes when it does, and those are pretty amazing
Well spoken!
Of all of the Coltrane pieces, you HAD to pick my favorite one and combined it with a standout from one of my favorite Sunn 0))) albums. This is brilliant!
If I could find entire albums of this, I would be ecstatic
This is GREAT. Holy dang do I love this.
I wrote a piece of music similar to this called 'music for drone group and free jazz' . I guess I wasn't the only that thought free jazz and drone worked together.
+Chant Cowen Is there anyway we could listen to it? Because Drone and Maniac Jazz worked great together.
James Blobb Sadly not. I haven't got a chance to form a group of musicians to play the piece.
Chant Cowen That's sad.
+Chant Cowen Do you have any sheet music for your piece?
The sheet music? If anything it is more of a graphic score and directions. Think John Zorn or an Earle Brown piece. In terms of drone and free jazz, it can very much goes off of feeling. I just found this masterpiece! Two of my favorites in their respective genre. Wow! WOW! LOVELY!
Interesting, I still found Sunn boring but adding jazz to the layer of their sound...well that's something.
Jack SV I 100% agree.
Never seen so much positive and well written comments in a UA-cam thread! I would love to see a physical release.
Xavier Haniquaut you cant show that on UA-cam.
I don't which genre it is, but one of them keeps me coming back to this video.
Do one with Sunno))) and Sun-Ra next :)
+Bacchus Baracus
All Hail Sunn-Ra)))
YAS!
Sunn RA\\\
YES!!
Merzbow and Sun Ra
This is my favorite thing in the world right now. I want to put it on loop and listen to it while I sleep for a1,000 years.
As Kyle Broflovski would say: "Holy shit, DUDE!" Now, if only this Drone outfit could get Robert Fripp to do some Coltrane-like riffing on his guitar for a recorded track and call the piece "Coltrane" that would be pretty awesome
Cartman is a beautiful human being.
+Dan Cooper yeah, Fripp, get on board
or Reeves Gabrels. He would be pretty awesome, too.
indeed
+Dan Cooper I would offer Nels Cline, as well. His 'Mars' with Gregg Bendian is pretty stellar...
This is literally how to feel high while sober
When you combine Heaven and Hell this is the sound that is produced.
Absolutely incredible , this could be the best thing I hear in 2016 !!
same, but 2017 for me
Worst thing I've heard as of 2019
this would be wild to trip on
"monolithian soundsmiths"= Perfect!
WOAH this is amazing 🤯
this works so well wtf
Holy christ this is ... monumental
Really throws off the vibe when the add for a bachelors degree in IT pop ups half way through this.
That's amazing! Please do more!
INCREDIBLE, please do more!
This is spectacular!!!
I love the way this rolls out: Trane, R. Ali and Sunn O))). Sheer genius.
I bet Trane would've liked this, too.
Lovely mashup!! The 2 kinds of music play off each other great. Well done!!
This is pure art.
This is amazing. And great!! Mashups are amazing. It also takes a good ear to create a good mashup, so compliments to the creator.
For those of you who like this, check out the 1980s supergroup Last Exit. Punishing soundscapes with some seriously on fire musicians.
The mashup to rule all mashups.
Brilliant 🎶👌🏻
It’s a duck that swallowed a bag of drugs and freakedout but people thought it was just scratching an itch
From Toni Braxton's "As long as I live" to this.how did I get to here????????
I didn't knew I needed this in my life. Now I can't get enough
this is worth being an official track on a real album by them
Last week I saw Sunn O))) at Saturn in BHM. That venue pays constant tribute to Sun Ra, so house music before show was all Arkestra!
Perfectly executed. Please make an EP (or album) out of this collaboration. Great stuff.
This blends beautifully. Fantastic
To whoever did this. I'm glad you did, thank you for making my days a little bit better.
Masterfully done!
The Mr. Bungle group I'm in on FB sent me here. This shit is crazy...
this is the most satisfying thing I've heard all day
Well this is absolutely stunning. Fucking incredible.
Sure, it works. But at what cost?
madness!
TeaDrinker3000 how much is something that is priceless?
Tree fiddy
I believe this is free to listen to.
EVERYTHING
Jazz and metal aren't as different as they would seem, I tip my cap to you for realizing this and creating something with it.
Jazz is the grandfather of all modern music.
@@AlexWatersMusic *blues. The jazz you are currently hearing is an evolution from a kind of jazz heavily inspired by the blues.
@@michaeldrane9090 if you want to play that game, spirituals and folk music heavily inspired the blues.
This is incredible. Thank you so much.
Just letting you know that this has been shared on a rock webzine in Portugal! And I love it, but I predict that I won't be listening to this while I'm drunk, that would be the real mess.
What to say? Gonna freak out my family, the dog, my neighbors...Thank you!!!!
Amazing work! I heard this in the morning again and again. A trip around the galaxy. Keep with your great work. A big hug from Colombia. Beautiful picture.
Multitasking
This is one of the most confusingly beautiful things I’ve ever heard
Thank you, kind sir!
You have fulfilled all my musical dreams!
Priceless!
🙏
this is actually so cool, great mashup
There was a band from Prov, Rhode Island called Llasa Cement Plant that was short-lived but probably the closest in sound to this. Brilliant.
God this is just perfect.
This is so much better than all the BM bands trying to put sax in their albums.
heavy as stone
Absolutely mind boggling.
This needs to be on vinyl.
Wonderful, how could it not be, such genius all round
Excellent one of the best mix ever
Oh my god 5:03 when the guitar chords change at the same time as a cymbal crash! Haha it’s like Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the moon
This is truly amazing well played.
It's ALL O)))NE Giant Circle...
14 minutes well spent.
