The 2022 Hummer EV Edition 1 Pickup (~$140,000 CAD, $110,295 USD) and the 2022 Rivian R1T ($90,000 CAD starting, $67,500 USD starting) are lined up for a drag race at Willow Springs International Raceway. The over 9000 lb Hummer EV has a whopping 1000 hp and 11,500 lb ft of torque (while being a bit cheeky). The much lighter Rivian has a strong 835 hp and 908 lb ft of torque, but has the same claimed 0-60 time as the Hummer. 3 seconds flat. What will happen? Just so you know, the speed limiters on these trucks (and a lot of modern cars) are there to prevent you from exceeding the tires’ maximum speed rating. It’s not a public safety nanny. Most light truck tires have a Q, S, or T speed rating corresponding to a 100mph, 106mph, or 112mph max speed. Similarly, non-performance passenger car tires are typically H rated, corresponding to a 130mph top speed. It’s really not until you get into cars with W (168mph) or higher rated tires that you start seeing examples of electronic limiters for reasons other than tire speed ratings.

FWIW, on some electric cars the motor type is what causes the limit. For e.g. I have a Mach-E GT PE, which is limited to 124 MPH, but the tires it comes with are Y (186MPH) rated. Apparently the limit is a function of the single phase synchronous electric motor design that it uses. Had For opted for a asynchronous motor, like what the S Plaid has, it wouldn't have that limit.

Its honestly getting scarier by the second with the weight of EVs, they're near if not heavier than a Silverado/Ram 3500 or closer to a semi, compacted into a small car. What used to be a fender bender, now is more of a potential deadly situation, these cars have the mass to ram the rear all the way to your front driver seat, the structure of cars haven't exponentially stiffen like the weight

@@redvivid it’s absolutely huge, I saw and drove it in person at Rivians’ event. It might even be bigger than a f150 xlt. The bed is a little small but the cabin and hood and height are massive.

I don't understand why there are so many EV snobs that aren't educated about gas powered vehicles, yet have opinions on them. I'm not even getting into race cars. Also, when you say blow the doors you mean in a drag race right? Cause around a track these EVs are wayyyy too heavy. If we can get some performance Hydrogen cars then I think we'll be cooking, but batteries are new oil so...
As a Firefighter/Emt, I am not looking forward to seeing the carnage that will result when that kind of velocity is combined with that kind of mass.

Most off road tires are good to around 105-115 mph. That is why they put these limiters on these trucks.
And i would think the weight of it might play a part too. Especially for the brakes i mean 9k lbs is a lottttt

The problem with off road tires is the tire pattern. Those big knobs are great for gripping large rocks, or digging into mud. But poor on the road, because the lack of grip.

the rivian looked as quick as the plaid off the line. That's pretty impressive
Off the line the issue with the tires, all about the grip.
To be fair the main upgrade of the plaid from previous versions is the speed above 50-60 it doesn't lose the power which is why in a 1/4 mile or on a roll it really trounces.
The Model X with a half a car length at the first 10 feet and a full car length at 20 feet is absolutely destroying the Rivian.

My question. On any of these vehicles is there a computer regulator system that allows you to reach top speed but starts restricting some of the power as you get over a certain speed limit causing the car or truck to lose a quite few seconds when reaching top speed?

The remarkable thing to remember is these are just the first generation of EV trucks too. Just imagine what they will be like in 10-20 years.
Once you can get an ev truck with about 750 miles of range, ice trucks will be pointless.
It’s so strange that there are trucks now with the same exhaust note as James’ Miata.

Forget the quarter mile. I would love to see an episode of these machines race across the continental U.S. A la cannon ball race style (without violating speed and traffic laws). They should be prohibited from bringing a charging station crew and arranging charging station pit stops ahead of time. Run what you brung and charge at any available charging stations that would be available to any average Joe. I think that an event like this would be a great idea for promoting the growth of the electric vehicle market.

HUMMER isn't built for drag races.
Bought a baby H3 Hummer 15 years ago. Your right about its speed, cant hardly get out of it's own way. What I can say is that it's been the best vehicle as far as repairs I have ever owned. Only time spent in the shop has been for oil changes. Never needed a single repair!

Rivian offers an incentive to their employees that lets them affordably pay for a rivian truck of their own. Pretty nice for them to do that considering their trucks aren’t exactly cheap.

Rivian HQ is in California, but they have engineering/development offices in metro Detroit.
Is the Electric has a sport stick shift , or some of them , automatic transmission , or manual transmission ? .

Just watched the Hagerty drag race with Rivian vs TRX vs Raptor, and they mentioned GM was missing from the lineup.
So this is fun because I can kind of place where the Hummer would probably fall in that lineup (spoiler, the Hummer would probably place between the Rivian and the TRX in a solid second place. Though the speed limiter might give the TRX a fighting chance, especially in a rolling race or in the half mile).
James, in essence: " I don't have any fancy tricks. I just adjust all these settings, and also lower my vehicle's profile as recommended by the manufacturer so that I am doing all the same things they are but don't have a silly name to call it."

Would it have hurt Rivian to actually create a button on a screen to do all of those things instead of the user knowing all the settings they have to tweak?
@@theflew That's funny to me. Drivers today are all about "save the manuals", and " I want a driver's car for the real driving experience". Yet here we are with those same drivers wanting everything automated for them.
I think today's drivers need to stop and think about what they really want for a moment.
