@saltedeggprawn_ first off, don't conflate issues. The second amendment has been around far longer than tiktok or the current trends in violence. There's no relationship between the two.
Second, you should've pointed out what the video text stated. It implied they were going to shoot up congress. Unjust threats of violence are the issue - not simply having a firearm.
All that said, who gives a fuck about tiktok. Those politicians are as clueless as any others. Americans don't support the censorship of media - especially not when it mirrors what the Chinese do to their own citizens.

Nah, I disagree with you - an average Singaporean would probably not be able to deal with this SAVAGE TOXICITY.
I think most Singaporeans would choose either one of the following response: 1. Break down in frustration, losing composure & the ability to speak coherently (then the toxic arrogant Americans would be even more gleeful because it would seem like the Singaporean is panicking = lying/ inferior cos he cannot even speak properly) or 2. Try the utmost to reply politely then fail miserably to get even 3 words in each time he is “given the opportunity to speak” just like in this case (the hope is that others would recognise the unfairness & toxicity of the situation & see through the manipulation but unfortunately this places too much faith in humanity).
I think few Singaporeans are as shrewd & commanding as the late LKY (even LHL is not). Most of us are “too soft” in such situations. And some would totally lose their cool & respond with rudeness & end up stooping down to the same level as the aggressor. Not saying Chinese nationals are more capable candidates as an CEO but I think they might fare better in this situation than a Singaporean as their people are known to be more aggressive in general (due to their culture & the amount of competition they face). Instead of trying to just answer the aggressor’s questions politely as he can & hoping the rest of the world can see what the aggressor is trying to do, he would probably not allow his voice to be drowned every single time & put the aggressor in his place.

@@sylh8173 You wouldn't be able to just walk out in rage or depression either. If you were subpoenaed to appear for the hearing (i.e. legally compelled), walking out would likely earn you the charge of "contempt of Congress" - obstructing the work of Congress - which, like to failing appear before court, carries legal penalties including possible arrest. If the chair of the committee reacted fast enough, they could order the sergeant-at-arms (the House's disciplinary officer) to escort you back to your seat.
If Mr. Chew had walked out under subpoena (he wasn't under subpoena, thankfully), he could have been charged and threatened with arrest. Even if an arrest didn't occur (unlikely anyway for a high-profile foreign subject who didn't commit a violent crime), the mere threat or attempt would be disastrous for U.S. relations with China and especially Singapore.
While Mr. Chew wasn't subpoenaed in real life, refusing to appear before the committee would, given how important and high-profile the TikTok issue is to the American government, have earned him a subpoena anyway, as would walking out of the voluntarily-attended hearing. Thus, same outcome.

This is so painful to watch.
As how I see it, there’s an epidemic in America & that is toxic superiority. Obviously not every American is guilty of such behaviour but it is way too common amongst the Americans I’ve encountered & seen in the media.
They tend to have this false sense of superiority over others, it could even be against their own people. Often loud, loving the sound of their own voice, talking over others. The country supposedly encourages freedom of speech but the individuals are only concerned about their own freedom to speak & disregards others’ freedom to do the same, essentially leading to some form of censorship, no? So not just a display of selfishness, toxic superiority but also contradiction. I’ve also encountered many who don’t just talk over others but actually talk down on others using a condescending tone, just like what happened here. Even when they are clearly in the wrong. Instead of using facts/ solid arguments to win people over civically, they resort to using dominance & even manipulation to “win”. And it’s sad to see this kind of bully behaviour being displayed not just amongst young people but adults & even in congress & being such commonplace.

I'll start this by saying that the past few days I've kinda turned myself into an advocate for TikTok here, due to outrage over this circus you just described.
That being said, I'm just a TikTok user who recently did some research specifically on community standards of UA-cam, Meta and TikTok for a study I was carrying on, so I'm kinda fresh on comparing their features. And it struck me how TikTok's are kinda the most restrictive as far as concern for kids' safety goes. Like, on TT creators don't even use the word "challenge", just to say one, because it's a hot topic. As that congresswoman showed by exploiting it. In general, all three platforms are quite aware of potential issues and constantly work on their community standards, updating them, following current trends etc.
So why did this hearing only call on TikTok about kids' safety? Well, one might wonder if the fact that some of these congressmen have stock in Meta is related to that. Why target a single platform when all of them expose billions of videos where there's bound to be some that actually slip through safety checks? Perhaps there's more interest in taking down the (foreign) competitor?
As for data leaks, I've always been concerned with my personal data almost to paranoid levels. As you might guess from my username here. But what does TikTok store that is actually a concern for national security? Most of the data on TikTok is actually public, so it's not like you need a double code verification to access it and they get access to who knows what sensitive data. Especially compared to Facebook, frankly. And of all three platforms, TikTok is by far the one with the least advertising.

Even if they know there are cameras and the whole thing will be watched by millions on the internet, and they just don't care? Cause they know we can do nothing about it. But I can assure you one thing here: they won't let anybody talk to them in the way they speak to this CEO; I mean, literally none of them, they know what they are doing; this is not a fair hearing, but some politician scheme.
