Shou Chew is an exemplary leader of today. We can say all we want but this gentleman has exhibited professionalism, emotional regulation at the highest degree in all situations we have been shown, integrity and intelligence. I think we have to be fair that TikTok is an app and in the end it is a business with a mission and vision like all businesses do. While they have responsibility to their customers, the customers must be accountable on how they use the app, too. It's a collaboration effort between users and the app. If we are civil and morally aware, we would know what to and what not to. TikTok is an app that allows a stage for anyone and everyone regardless of our status, connections. Mr Chew says it, everyone stands a chance to make it so long as you have talent and of course posting regularly. Just like everything in life, exercise moderation, it will be a safe platform for all.
You avoided specifying which but I am assuming that you meant when Chris Anderson asks if he can guarantee that no foreign government can use tiktok to rig the political conversation. First, let's be real, American politics is already rigged by the capitalists, the corporates. Second, no sane, realistic, and humble person can ever guarantee they can stop bad actors. Which is why there is gun violence and other crimes. No government can guarantee it, much less a private entity. Third, the protections put in place by tiktok far exceeds anything that American big tech has tried to do or laws that American lawmakers have even come close to putting in place.
Chew impressed me a lot. He's a guy to be studied in courses related to Rhetoric. He's so well spoken and eloquent. Right now this guy is super hot in the market. I watch the whole video and it was amazing how the ceo express himself by answering all questions with genuine, discuss all what he knew on the company , and how to engage with his customer. Its a great conversation.
Very humble and well spoken. Both the interviewer and interviewee. 🙏🏼 And for some reason very i believe him. His a family man with no bad sentiments attached to him 🤷🏻♀️
Amazing CEO, so apt and compelling and seemingly transparent. He looks so much responsible and trustworthy to lead a platform like tik tok safely and to success. Wish him all the best, so much to emulate from him.
Many of his answers were naive, and his "solutions" will not work. I'm left to believe he is either too naive or too duplicitous. Neither are good signs. His behaviors matche those of a younger Zuckerberg. It's difficult to say, but maybe narcissism is at play? He's not a good CEO. He's good for his company, but quite bad for society. (TikTok is recognized as danger, in many ways, in most free nations. Do you not understand why that's so?)
It's not always easy to be negative about your product as a business person but truth be told making the users to be glued to using tiktok for longer periods of time is one of their main goals as a company
The fact that the interviewer is asking the questions and behaving like he knows everything better than the CEO of TikTok. I personally think that minimum questions should be a great opportunity for us to learn more from the CEO. You’re with a talent and you act like you’re a genius. That’s insane
That's what they used to be able to do with social media, free speech, like Facebook, Twitter. They're afraid tiktok will do the same. The bottom line is tiktok makes a lot of money. Money is the only factor
It's a collective effort and responsibility for the product and the consumer to maintain a safe environment within any platform. That's the main core vision towards the mission of understanding oneself and the other providing a good education system.
this is like another congressional hearing, but with manners from the host. two things i like about Shou's speaking on Ted: 1. he really does not argue his way out of these raising concerns 2. the practical efforts and costs put into company's responsibilities & transparency is admirable As i've been working on Tech Industry for a while, his initiates on data privacy & third party review is really unprecedented.

People make their own decision to use social media, knowing all its risks after all. If you cannot resist the temptation, addiction or bad self esteem, social media works only as a mirror to reflect who you are.
Internal and external factors are important, but some people give too much credit to self-related characteristics like discipline. External factors and how it enables are important as well. I can't be bothered about tiktok. I don't like that type of media, it's too attention grabbing and mind-numbing. I won't be going around telling people about 'ooooo how disciplined I am'. It's also similar to 'hard work', especially when someone is ignorant about their own privilege. Or, imagine if you had the genetic predisposition to getting addicted to certain things? Of course there are exceptional examples who have fantastic levels of discipline despite external temptations, but that's not the majority. It definitely feels better to take credit for everything I guess.
I suggest you learn about dopamine, addiction, narcissism, and other pathologies. TikTok is a haven for mental illnesses. But you won't realise that unless you're knowledgeable & experienced in such fields.

Lol, "bazillion". Sure. This guy Shou Chew is trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes. He's good for his company, but bad for people & society. Maybe another Zuckerberg?????
The interview look like a defense of permission, it really does not have to be like that. As long as the company abides the local government law and provides the good service , it should not to be treated like that. Anyway. Chou has very patience and politeness than many other big company’s leaders.
Gotta give it to Chris. He always walks the line well. He pushes back asks hard questions but good ones as well. But despite his best efforts, he didn't push back enough. He should have focused more on the differences between the Chinese version, the negative effects of this app on attention spans et cetera.
100% agreed. The biggest concern is the difference in content between here and China. Tiktok literally has so much trash content albeit fun content in the US but in China, everything is refined and filtered albeit might not as fun.
@@iamsheep I think this is a good point. Because it’s based on what the consumers want. If the children in china could have it their way, I’m sure they would prefer the US version. However, the Chinese government is very aware of the negative impacts of a short attention span. So they took the proactive measures. In the US, we will have to ask the question of whether we care more about censorship in this case or do we care more about things that can negatively impact the future. It seems the US is quite bad at this though. The government is controlled by money, so that’s why we are always behind in adopting better policies
It should base on culture and respect local community. It can be scary if the USA version flood into China or the rest of the world about the lawless guns, mindset and drugs. That will mess up the rest of the world crazily.

@@raidenyvelina8558 I don't think the host asked genuine questions, it was more like a trial again. Basically all the questions he asked could be applied to any other social media platforms, about privacy, about data, about addiction, but why tiktok? Because it is Chinese, that is the only reason why tiktok is getting so much attention. Facebook did the something years ago and I don't see this level of interrogation.
Really impressed by Shou's sharing! And so proud of being a fellow Singaporean :) Thank you for all the little things done to protect and make Tiktok a safer platform for all, especially for kids!
I think what to rethink is the definition of creativity and joy. The content is the key, algorithms are less important. Personally I am cautious about indirect information. It is less relevant to my life, it is much harder to tell its authenticity. No matter how it is tailored for entertainment or tutoring , the information quality degrades because of the fewer degrees of freedom contact between me and that piece of information. The best quality information is from real life, the things happening in real life that has a direct interact or impact. All those media platforms are basically engineering information so-seriously using AI that asks users to pay attention and then forget. Additionally, creation or distribution of information should be free. I don't know how much value people's attention is to the media platform and the advertisement industry, but eventually I believe in no-cost, feel-free, authentic and transparent information creation, distribution and feedback.
It's amazing that he didn't dissed FB especially, Google or any other internet co on privacy issues when they are more susceptible to foreign interference on US elections due to their revenue model and on privacy issues. Seldom hear from a CEO who actually knows and work on the company's vision and mission, it's usually just bs puff. It was a pleasant Ted talk, the interviewer is fantastic.
Applause for restraint regarding pointing out the hypocrisy of other governments (wink wink, we all know the top10) and their access to data on other platforms.
Shou Zi Chew is the best, especially for how he dealt with US congress! TikTok is amazing it has completely changed my life, it really does live up to its mission. I love that North Star!
9:41 TikTok CEO squirms for 3 MINUTES after being asked if Tiktok gives creators fake likes & views using bots to encourage them to post. The question is asked clearly and he intentionally dodges 3 separate times.
I really appreciate the effects Chow has put on this matter and I can see the passion and the motivation he is presenting and the honesty image he has tried to build up. It must be a very tensed and suffocating situation at which he has been facing since the hearing. But to be honest, I still don't see any critical evidence or logically rigorous points that can really persuade and to prove his points against the doubts and questions. It's far not enough to comfort and assure the group of people with different concerns. Great CEO, barely qualified team in strategies. I think his team is not doing their job well enough to support him, they should come up with ideas and expresssions much better than this. Anyways, wish him and his team good luck on this matter.
So I guess we should just trust him. Nothing wrong with the app, nothing wrong with social media, nothing was ever wrong with anything in the world. Just "relax" let the algorithm choose for you, consume, make them rich, repeat.
Trust him with what? It doesnt matter if he had truly has good intentions(which isn’t garantied). He has to give the information to the Chinese gov. and that should be enough to ban tiktok
@@herrroin6867 I dont care whether he has good or bad intentions, however, TikToks and the Chinese Variants business are split up. Additionally, US data is stored on US servers supervised by US-American staff. Yes, China has that law, and they could in theory put pressure on ByteDance, however, what kind of data would they want to retrieve, that they could not retrieve from Tencent. If you start banning Chinese companies, youre just removing your own entertainment. Sure, if you are a boring person you might like that. You can keep posting on Facebook then, they even give away your data without any law. It makes no sense to start banning company. I can see you play Fortnite. Fortnite owned by EpicGames, 40% of EpicGames is owned by Tencent. You would have to ban Fortnite too. Even if they were to, I don't see whats in for the Chinese governement to grab your TikTok data.

"You're one of the most influential and powerful people in the world, whether you know it or not" - Gives "with great power comes great responsibility" vibes and kind of speaks both of the humility of Shou and how much Chris Anderson genuinely hopes Shou knows the weight of his responsibility and how much he wishes Shou well.
Your comment is word salad
He is really a sincere, honest, responsible and royal person, employee and CEO. 👍👍
TikTok = how to create more negative Algorithm to give the youths outside China more bad influence so that they can bring more harm to themselves.
Naive comment. Heard of dopamine? It shatters such simplistic views of behavior. It drives addictions, as does TikTok!
👍🏼
Im not using tiktok, but actually, i'm thinking of bussiness on tiktok rightnow ! Good talk from Mr. Shou Chew
Proud to be Singaporean 🇸🇬
he's a proud Chinese.
就好比一直问一个美国人 说你是英国人
He evades certain questions but he does it with such intelligence that most people misses it.
The data is overseen by Americans and the code is transparent. He answered. Other American social media didn't do that.
He meant none is perfect.
thats why he is paid almost $14million a year.
very media trained...he's an excellent talker
Chew impressed me a lot. He's a guy to be studied in courses related to Rhetoric. He's so well spoken and eloquent. Right now this guy is super hot in the market. He could basically choose where he wants to work, put his résumé to an auction and see what companies, governments or any kind of industry that needs a public relations officer and see who offers him more money.
Glad to see Chew was given a fair chance to explain their operations. This is the video the US Congress should watch.
Im a 41 old male living in Oklahoma. I use TikTok few times a week. I don't see anything wrong with it. Overtime it shows you videos you will most likely enjoy. I think it's a great app. You can if you aren't careful almost fall into a trance. Keep saying one more video. I like the app.
TikTok = how to create more negative Algorithm to give the youths outside China more bad influence so that they can bring more harm to themselves.
I watch the whole video and it was amazing how the ceo express himself by answering all questions with genuine, discuss all what he knew on the company , and how to engage with his customer. Its a great conversation.
I admire Shout’s confidence greatly
Very humble and well spoken. Both the interviewer and interviewee.
🙏🏼
And for some reason very i believe him.
He is humble and honest, also logically empressed ideas
It's not always easy to be negative about your product as a business person but truth be told making the users to be glued to using tiktok for longer periods of time is one of their main goals as a company
He is handsome, eloquent, and seemingly sincere but I won't totally buy what he said.

such an articulate and charismatic leader
He is a very honest man the way he speak,,,,they he was not afraid of all Americans Congressmen questioning 👍👍👍✌️
TikTok = how to create more negative Algorithm to give the youths outside China more bad influence so that they can bring more harm to themselves.
The fact that the interviewer is asking the questions and behaving like he knows everything better than the CEO of TikTok. I personally think that minimum questions should be a great opportunity for us to learn more from the CEO. You’re with a talent and you act like you’re a genius. That’s insane
I think I sense a lot of negativity from Americans towards Tick Tok.
I have never seen them reacting this way towards other technology.
Our Singapore hero, our TIKTOK Star🌟🌟, Mr Chew!, 🇸🇬🇸🇬

Shou broke-downed and emphasized the geniusand brilliance of the Interest Graph really well, without really saying the word itself. Such a mad skill.
facebook, tiktok are couple of examples where app became too efficient to the point it became bad, IMO.
this is like another congressional hearing, but with manners from the host.
two things i like about Shou's speaking on Ted:
1. he really does not argue his way out of these raising concerns
2. the practical efforts and costs put into company's responsibilities & transparency is admirable
As i've been working on Tech Industry for a while, his initiates on data privacy & third party review is really unprecedented.
I’m installing TikTok while listening to this Ted talk. What an impressive person.

A very thoughtful cEO, who can articulate so well.
People in the free world can see he's naive, duplicitous, or both. Being an articulate doesn't matter if you're unethical or naive.
@@keep-ukraine-free he is making every efforts to address everyone concerns. This shows how dedicated he is, coming out of competitive billion people gave him a survival instict.
People make their own decision to use social media, knowing all its risks after all. If you cannot resist the temptation, addiction or bad self esteem, social media works only as a mirror to reflect who you are.
Wow a ching chong defending his country’s app
we always need to look out for high-risk groups. in this case, young ones, and other mentally vulnerable people
@B Babbich 你说得对,所以美国政府一定是要ban毒品和啤酒的……对吧……
Great watch. Many thanks - such considered & articulate questions, answers and conversations from both sides
tiktok is the number 1 platform to showcase your talent to the world.
I'm really impressed from the speaking , talking, body and face expression and even his boldness . So nice and smooth one and how light he takes the questions that should be either mind but he doesn't . I saw so many videos but they just asked a questions like they were not related to the interview . I think all questions were like just to accept that say yes to what they are questioning but the CEO is straight forwarded and to the point and confused all those well who were asking questions .nice of you CEO
i love tiktok. It changed my life really giving me more independence and motivation
This is a bazillion times better than what they did in the Congress hearing
Lol, "bazillion". Sure. This guy Shou Chew is trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes. He's good for his company, but bad for people & society. Maybe another Zuckerberg?????
I use TikTok and I am an artist there. That’s also how I got exposure as a local artist, here in Portland, Oregon. 🌹💜🦋⭐️
I feel like he's an A.I. himself. So smart and articulate! ❤
Shou seems to be a genuine person. He made a lot of good cases for the platform. How can it be profitable going forward with all the regulations?
TikTok = how to create more negative Algorithm to give the youths outside China more bad influence so that they can bring more harm to themselves.
The interview look like a defense of permission, it really does not have to be like that. As long as the company abides the local government law and provides the good service , it should not to be treated like that. Anyway. Chou has very patience and politeness than many other big company’s leaders.
Great interview! Thanks Chris, it has changed my perception about Tik Tok, for better🎉❤
He seems really genuine, humble and smart, he should be a nice guy
He is one way to define the phrase, "pleasant on the eyes."
This is how the hearing with congress should've been like. Not senators constantly interrupting the CEO just so they can hear themselves talking....
So you want censorship?
@@danielh00 Maybe that means US = trash but fun?
like it or not, huge respect to this man.

the interviewer was amazing, he led very well, and he asked questions that Shou Chew try to avoid, very good interview, everyone should read the word in between this amazing 39:18 min interview. 10/10.
fun fact, many platforms are copying this ai mechanism from tik tok, recetrly youtube shorts, or the Instagram reels, crazy times are coming.
True.
Troubling.
TikTok the Terrible!
Everything has it's pros and cons, it's up to the individual how they allow those things to impact them.
Too naive. That assumes people can control themselves. If that were so, there would be no war, violence, drugs, alcohol, crime...
TikTok = how to create more negative Algorithm to give the youths outside China more bad influence so that they can bring more harm to themselves.
Tik tok =the biggest procrastination tool in history
That goes for every modern social media platform. And now the other main platforms (UA-cam, Instagram, Twitter) are attempting to copy TikTok’s user interface anyway. Singling out TikTok fixes nothing
Or Chinese data harvester
At least the other social media platforms sell your data to local businesses and not the CCP

It seems to me that TikTok is heading to the path of becoming one of the greatest companies in the world.
Greatest?
Kuddos to Mr Chew and his team. I now understand the vision and the mission. Am glad the team is sitting on top of these issues instead of sweeping them under. TikTok it seems like they are leading and steering the direction of their vision.👊🏾❤️
this is really great talk.
Sorry, I deleted tiktok from my phone. Because I spent too much time playing. And actually in my country, Southeast Asia. Almost everyone uses tiktok. Child or adult, the impact is very visible. Making everyone addicted. But they don't realize, and consider it normal. Very unfortunate, for young people. How can the nation develop.
Of all the "opportunities" that the US boasts about, the opportunity to complete a sentence is certainly non-existent the last time he went there. Good to know he managed to finish a sentence this time round.
So a professional talk! Thanks both ❤
amazing interview i had ever saw.
Ted is so good at the interview. Mr. Chew is the best CEO.
Great questions from Chris, I wish they had more time. Shou seemed very very careful and often too evasive in his answers.
I don't have TikTok, I waste too much time on screens as it is. But I hope we find ways to make these things (social media, AIs etc) better for us as humanity rather than for few people's wallets.
Agree with
literally! all the other top comments saying hes such a good ceo are giving bootlicker energy, he was so evasive when answering that sometimes i wondered if he even understood the question
@@raidenyvelina8558 I don't think the host asked genuine questions, it was more like a trial again. Basically all the questions he asked could be applied to any other social media platforms, about privacy, about data, about addiction, but why tiktok?
Do you realise China is not your friend? It's not a friend to most of the free world. The Chinese govt is strongly authoritarian.
To people paying attention, that (and other problematic behaviors) showed he's either naive, duplicitous, or both.
He's clever at least what I can't say about guys he was talking to in US congress😅
So I guess we should just trust him. Nothing wrong with the app, nothing wrong with social media, nothing was ever wrong with anything in the world. Just "relax" let the algorithm choose for you, consume, make them rich, repeat.
.
May I ask how you got to this video?
@@Fe-zm8rq Smart Faith! But I didn't said if I trust any other company too.
