Gun Review: Daniel Defense DD5V1 Rifle in .308

  • Опубліковано 12 бер 2019
  • With the DD5V1 rifle, gun maker Daniel Defense followed a natural progression for AR-pattern rifles. Unlike Daniel Defense’s standard fair - AR-15s chambered in 5.56 - the DD5V1 is an AR-10 chambered in .308. Aesthetically, there’s little difference between the platforms, but the AR-10 is no easy layup for a gun maker as the design, which served as a precursor for the AR-15, as it handles a heavier round. Yet, Daniel Defense’s take on it is quite possibly one of the best available.

    Good review. I purchased my DD5 V1 when they were first released and have had nothing but fun with it. No issues at all over the years, just rock solid.

    I’m 20 and shot over 200 rounds last week with my buddy who owns the DD5V1 and I can honestly say I’m in love with this rifle it’s so reliable and clean but one issue I did have was when the mag got stuck but I believe it was just a mag issues. Definitely will be my second buy next year once I’m 21 🤟🏽

    1st owner had it for 2 weeks then ran into financial problems, bought it for 1600.00. Best investment I have ever made.

    What ammo/ suppressor were you running when you say it ran reliably? My rifle Is anything but reliable with a can on, and even with it off runs very overgassed and cycles quite aggressively. Will, way too often, flip ejected casings 180’ and right back in on top of the mag.

    nice job. im fairly happy with my DD5V1.
    its proven 100% reliable and sub MOA accurate.
    between its solid performance and the incredible price my dealer gave me, $1700 out the door and the lowest price anyone has paid that ive found, its hard to complain about the DD5V1.
    i love its sleek, elegant and sexy styling. the entire rifle is an assembly of flowing, graceful curves. everything except for the one place some would occasionally like to hold the rifle by, the mag well.
    the corners of which are so damn sharp its possibly THE most uncomfortable mag well ever devised.
    It makes a superb pain inducing device though.
    WTF Daniel Defense?
    other than that i have few real complaints.
    recoil is a bit harsh but i plan to remedy that with a good brake and a blast forwarding device.
    ive also mounted my Primary Arms platinum 1-8x ACSS FFP scope in my ADM recon qd mount.
    its the ultimate CQB to long range optic for a .308 battlerifle.
    its a bit weighty but the overal quality and performance, capability and versatility it affords is hard to argue with.
    ive rounded out my DD5 with a handful of Magpul products. ive mounted MBUS pro back up sights, an RVG foregrip, a RSA para-clip sling mount and my favorite K2 pistol grip.
    I hated the DD stock at first but it quickly grew on me and performs very well and allows me to get all 4 fingers around the buttpad and inside the stock for a secure carry handle for using the DD5 as a $3000 walking stick when needed.
    a BCM pic rail bipod mount and UTG recon 360° bipod finish it off.
    the DD5V1 makes a damn good battlerifle imo but i feel it really makes more sense as a long range precision rifle
    im actually sweating the new Adams Arms P2 small frame .308 and im thinking of buying it as my battlerifle and swapping the DDs 16" barrel for a 18", 20" or even 22" barrel, maybe even carbon fiber, slapping on the new Primary Arms 3-18x ACSS R-grid 2B scope, thereby converting it into my ideal LRPR.
    i just gotta cough up another $1400 or so for the AA , perhaps $600-$800 for a premium carbon fiber barrel and $675 for the optic and mount.
    easy peasy, uhhh, gonna have to do something sleazy! lol

      I own both. The DD5 has more features. The DD5 is ambidextrous. The M5 is not. The criterion barrel is good but DD is famous for their barrels too.
      That being said, nothing wrong with an Aero M5.

    • @holdernewtshesrearin5471
      @holdernewtshesrearin5471 5 років тому

      SHADOW . - btw i paid $1700 out the door for my brand new DD5V1. DD lowered the msrp and deals can be found.
      the AP M5E1 is an excellent rifle. but its not FULLY ambidextrous and to upgrade to equal the other premium features standard on the DD5 such as the NIB/chrome coated BCG, the proven quality of DDs CHF barrels, high quality furniture etc, the price paid for that M5E1 will end up within $200 of what i paid for my DD5V1.
      that said, $200 is $200 and the M5E1 is a superb battlerifle.
      it really comes down to 'to each his own', right?
      no need to fight.

    • @holdernewtshesrearin5471
      @holdernewtshesrearin5471 5 років тому

      kskelleway - i have my DD5V1 decked out with my Primary Arms platinum 1-8x ACSS in an ADM recon qd mount and Magpul MBUS Pro sights.
      I use the UTG recon 360° bipod. I own 3 of them and theyve proven good performers for only about $50.
      If you dont need or care for alot of adjustability and flexibility, the standard Harris bipod works great too at about $75.
      BTW the Lancer L7 AWM 20-rd 7.62 mags are SUPERB! Theyre pricey at about $36 on sale but they are the best 7.62 mags ive ever used.
      They also have 25-rd models.

      hold 'er Newt, shes rearin' ? Thanks for the info - much appreciated. I’ve been experimenting with magazines so I’ll check out the Lancers. Thinking about doing a 1-6x or 8x scope so thanks also for the suggestion. This rifle makes me want to spend more money on it...

    • @holdernewtshesrearin5471
      @holdernewtshesrearin5471 5 років тому

      kskelleway - Sure thing. glad i could help!
      Yeah its a very well sorted rifle. Its already ready already for the most part.
      I added Magpul MBUS Pro sights, my PA platinum 1-8x ACSS FFP scope in an ADM recon qd mount and will likely buy PAs new 3-18x ACSS R-grid 2B scope for long range duty.
      And i may buy the ATN X-sight 3-14x day/night scope for night duty. Im currently testing it right now.
      I swapped the skrawny grip for my favorite Magpul K2 and the RVG up front
      as well as the RSA paraclip sling adapter just above the RVG.
      The only other thing i plan to add is a good muzzle device. Possibly the VG6 Epsilon now that they have it in 7.62.
      I have 1 on my FN M4/RECCE carbine and love it.
      I also plan to do a banging camo paint job in Vietnam era green,brown and black.
      Yeah those Lancers are niiiice! but pricey. I have 4) Lancer 20-rd and 4) Magpul 25-rd p-mags with the window, about 8) 20-rd and 2) 10-rd mags for bench shooting. The Magpuls are excellent btw.
      I plan to buy about 4) aluminum or steel 20-rders and maybe Magpuls mighty D50 50-rd drum.
      I have a D60 60-rd 5.56 mag and like it for stationary defensive use so ill probably get the 7.62 version that just came out.
      Then Im DONE with the DD5V1 and ready to start building my ultralight 5.56 RECCE.

    • @holdernewtshesrearin5471
      @holdernewtshesrearin5471 5 років тому

      kskelleway - Oh, btw Caldwell has a nice liggtweight carbon fiber bipod that is a solid choice. My buddy has 2 of them and so far theyve worked out great.
      The legs are a little aggravating to extend but once you get the hang of it they work fine and its very light.
      I think they run $45ish.
      Good luck with your build.
      I highly recommend all components ive mentioned. I have direct experience with all unless noted otherwise.
      And i definetely HIGHLY recommend the Primary Arms 1-8x ACSS scope, whether FFP or SFP, whichever you prefer.
      I have both but prefer SFP.
      The $1299 platinum FFP is outstanding but the little lightweight $389 SFP model flat out gets it done!
      Ditto for the ADM recon qd mounts. I have 3 of them i like it so much.
      Also, stock up on Sig Sauer 175 gr OTM,
      and Norma 168 and 175 gr OTM loads.
      All 3 are incredible performers. Sub 1/2 moa in my DD5V1!
      Ditto for the 5.56 loads.
      The Sig 77 gr produce 3/8" 5-rd groups at 100 yds from both my FN ARs.
      The Norma 77 gr is right there with them and at $19 per box is a steal.
      And Normas tac .223 55 gr jhp is my go to load.
      I fire many perfect .000" 3-rd and sub 1/8" 5-rd groups at 25 yds and that little pill delivers 3/4" to 1-1/8" 5-rd groups at 100 yds!
      Not bad for 30 cents per round delivered!

      Yes, it’s called the DD5V4 URG and is backwards compatible with the DD5V1 lower. But you will have to replace your recoil buffer and spring with the new one.

      E-roc - exactly. at $3000 the DD5V1 and every other .308 AR-10 is a RIPOFF!
      DD has finally figured that out and lowered the price i paid $1700 out the door for mine which is a phenomenal deal and about what the rifle SHOULD sell for.
      or perhaps as much as $2000. but
      anything over $2200 is asinine imo.
      DD is full of themselves much like many others.
      i love my DD5V1. its an awesome battlerifle, reliable and sub MOA accurate.
      but not many rifles are actually worth $2000 let alone $3000!

      @elitetrader5468 5 років тому +1

      @@holdernewtshesrearin5471 Well, the rifle is worth whatever DD can get for it in the free markets. If it isn't worth 3K then no one will buy it and DD will be forced to drop the price until someone does. It is hard to put a true worth on a firearm given we don't know the R and D costs behind the development. We can only spec out materials cost which doesn't really do it justice. I'm very happy with my DD5V1. I got the old school Key Mod model shortly after it came out and it has been flawless. I can't remember what I paid for it, but probably over 2K I gather. Just like a BMW or Audi though, you are paying a premium for the name. Only you can decide whether it is worth it.

    • @holdernewtshesrearin5471
      @holdernewtshesrearin5471 5 років тому

      @@elitetrader5468 - like i said, I wouldn't pay more than $2,200 for it. Few if any rifles are worth $3,000 to ME.
      DD blew hundreds developing worthless features such as the proprietary and complex mirrored ambi mag release instead of using stock parts and an offset lifting lever on the left. And for what?
      So the left side button is in the exact same position as the right .
      Whoopee-doo! They can eat that R&D as i dont care to pay for it.
      Which they have.
      Paying $1700 for a $3,044 msrp rifle is awesome but it only happens when the manufacturer greatly misjudges the market or vastly outreaches it.
      DD is guilty of both.
      The DD5V1 is excellent. But like i said, only at a reasonable price. Otherwise id just buy a LMT or LWRCI.
      YOUR mileage may vary though.
