  • Are there any MechWarrior Dark Age pre-painted miniatures that work well in the current Catalyst plastics era? Let's compare some models side by side and I'll give you some thoughts on my plans for using, or not using, these miniatures.

It was the first arrival of those Wizkids Clicks mini's that finally pushed me out of the BT camp for 20 odd years.

It was those same minis when I was a kid that got me interested in battletech. Now 20ish years later my brother and I are both on the Kickstarter and have been playing classic Battletech a couple times a month.

Well, Kanazuchi Battle Armor is TWICE as heavy as the Elemental Battle Armor and considering it's IS tech, it kinda makes sense they're bulky.

I found the lightly armed infantry clix mini fit the scale quite well. I also have a bunch of Iron Wind infantry minis and the clix ones don't really look that much different.
Another type which is not talked about in the video and which I believe won't show up in the current Catalyst products anytime soon is turrets and guns. I've used the clix LRMs and rocket launches in my classic BT games (on Heroscape hex terrain) and they work beautifully.

surprisingly the Glory fire support vehicle at [8:33] don't look much bigger than the metal Ral Partha miniature I have. it also is doesn't have and is longer than a hex base.

the GM for our BT group has converted most of his clix infantry & vehicles for BT and it works quite well tbh

Im actually a big fan of using MWDA vehicles in Alphastrike. The larger vehicle models are in that 80-100 ton range and the models are approximately the same size as an atlas so the scale doesnt seem incredibly off to me at least

MWDA m3chs are pretty close to CAV Strike Operations scale. Granted price wise th Reaper Miniatures are usually around the same price, or more

You are exactly right. Both MWDA and CAV are N scale 1:160 or 10mm scale. CBT is 1:285 or 6mm scale.

After computer games like Crescent Hawk's Revenge and MechWarrior 2 and Mechcommander my intro to Tabletop was the Clix models. The game, for what it was, was fun. It was a slightly more complex HeroClix, which was an OK intro to skirmish games. The model scale doesn't match Catalyst so I wouldn't use them now, but I have some terrain ideas for old Clix and also old 80s style metal minis (that always looked dumb to me).

I inherited a lot of clickytech and I intend to use the vehicles and the infantry wholesale in btech as AS with bigger hexes and ignoring the scale difference

So the Gnome Battle armor for Clicks is the exact same Gnome battle armor for Iron Wind Metals. That said, my tourneys only allow Catalyst or IWM minis. So should they allow things like the Gnome?
The IWM Infantry are also the same scale as the Clicks. But the Death Ray Designs are closer to scale to what the infantry should be

  • @bruced648

i already had a substantial collection when clicky-tech was introduced. the scales were completely off. this was done intentionally, as was the rarity factor for certain pieces.
i will still use the infantry, power armor and vehicles when playing Alpha Strike. scale isn't as important for me when they don't last very long.
I will continue to use CGL, iron wind mini's and 3D prints to keep the standard game in scale.
as for infantry in 6mm scale, I use original battletech metal infantry and WH 40k titanicus infantry and tanks. they are good for the scale and fit 5 to a stand. there are other game pieces as well. I use micro armor for vehicles and axis&allies mini's game infantry and gun emplacement pieces.
like anything, it's what you have and how in depth you want to be with your game.

For Infantry, I exclusively use my MWDA infantry; they're out of scale with the catalyst elementals yeah, except that I also only use the MWDA elementals to begin with.

Why even re-base the infantry units? The bases they are on fit the hex grid and infantry don't have a facing side. You don't even need to put extra guys on the bases as you could just say that it's a stand in for this squad that has this many people in it.

its fine. i love and use the odd scale robotech minis and they dont fit, larger and smaller...but in my games, the outerworld has developed their own size mechs, and this includes having 65ton stingers amd such!! using robot, there are lighter, faster archers, etc...the tanks aren't that bad, the armor, who's to say the is didn't develop half sized mechs!? realistically, those would b the size of industrial sized mechs! and to just weaponize them..😉
u treat battletech more like am rpg, like dnd and less like warhammer, and it can be anything u can dream up!!😉👍

    • @thehobbyhabit

The bikes and things with exposed riders just look super wrong for my taste. The reason is they have scale relation to other vehicles and also show a human. To the eye you immediately start to imagine where drivers are in the other wizkids vehicles and suddenly you actually shrink/grow the vehicle to the wrong scale. They keep their scale illusion/fit better without that direct relative comparison, if that makes sense. I know to some it just won’t matter at all, and they are great gaming pieces, but to me I can leave ‘em to help me get a little closer scale look.
