This game was my jam back then. I still have my MWDA miniatures around.

I remember being very impressed with the AoD starter set and the rules changes from OG Dark Age, but the game was pretty dead in my area by then - the veteran BattleTech players had all gone back to BattleTech and the newer ones had moved on to other games.

Man I'm working my way through the Mechbay podcast and just did the Dark Age episode today. Talk about a serendipitous posting.

God, guns, and Battletech. I lost my group before clicks and the card game came out. Kind of feel like I'd like to try them though.

This was also my first tabletop game. Still have a soft spot for it and still have all my pieces plus the drop ship in box. Would love to see content for it.

PSH. I was playing with lead minis in the 80s, son! On further review, this explains me a whole lot as an adult.....

I hear ya Justin don't know where you are at in the world, but i am a a fan of your channel, as well as a fan of BattleTech. I have played when i was younger both Dark age and Classic. Here in PA in my area there is nobody who plays or have showed interested. I have even posted on our local Burrough page trying to promote ad advertise my interest in gaming and teaching or demoing these wonderful and fun games. I do like the video games but cannot beat the tabletops. Thanks Casten Mackerer summit Hill Pa.

Here in nj there's a small battletech group I rarely play with. But there's not many game stores or ways to find players. It's a shame

I remember the click games. Never got into it though. Aren't they still doing clicks but with the marvel IP or something?

I was playing Battletech before Wiz Kids bought it and made the Dark Age change. The major turn off about Dark Age for me was they changed it from a game you could play with literally anything being used to represent your units, to a miniatures based game where you needed to have the specific mini for whatever you wanted to play. That and some of the changes they made to the setting made absolutely no sense.

The setting shift I can see being off putting for some people but the minis stuff doesn’t bother me personally, considering my channel is heavily focused on minis and painting. Nothing wrong with cardboard standees but I think minis really help drive the game, especially considering how how well the plastics have done for CGL and for the price they are fantastic. AS is a nice middle ground, especially for combined arms, because standins and proxies are common and welcomed for unit representations.
I think there is also a bit of a difference in player preference from CBT players and AS players in terms of 2d and standees vs 3D and minis. Caters to different niches. For me though, even liking some of the CBT crunch, I still find it more fun personally with minis and terrain. It has no scientific basis but I somehow still believe my painted toys will roll better…lol! Though in practice my opponents seem to roll better against my painted models than my painted models perform vs them…😂

I don't have an issue with mini's themselves. They add a lot of flair to the game. I have about 3 dozen CGL Battletech mini's myself I am currently in the process of painting, and a few of the older Ral Partha ones. What I have an issue with is game like Battletech: Dark Age (or Clickytech to us pre-Dark Age players), which require you to have a specific mini to play a specific unit. Take the Mangonel you unboxed in this video for example. In Dark Age, if I want a Mangonel on my team I need a mini of one, and depending on your group, maybe even a mini of one from the same faction as all your other units.
In classic, if you want to play a Mangonel all you need is a print out or .pdf of the record sheet. On the board you can use anything you want, from the correct mini, all the way down to a piece of paper with an arrow on it.
