I really love the actor who play scorpion but i don't know if it's him or the script they give , there is something very weird about how they deal the characters!
Ever since my eyes were first opened to the awesomeness that is Mortal Kombat, in an arcade nearly 30 years ago, my favourite character was always Scorpion. And especially when I finished the game with him, the back story really got to me. Of course, his wife and child were never murdered - that was kind of the point, and the price he had to pay for his vengeance: his family was still alive and mourning him, but he could never again see them. "He can never again know his family but must exist forever with his secret curse." I always found the MK1 stories so much more compelling than any of the sequels, bare-bones though they were. Already with MK2 the attempts to link the new stories with the old were so-so.
Knew the movie would suck when the director said it would be “racist” to put Johnny Cage in the movie. Kano was the best part and I have a feeling that wasn’t their goal
I couldn’t find anything where the director McQuoid said something like this. But the producer Todd Garner definitely said he didn’t want a “white male lead” for the movie.
@@TheMrCHELL Yeah, it wasn't the director. It was the producer who said: "And I early on felt uncomfortable having a white male lead kind of lead that charge in the first movie." screenrant.com/mortal-kombat-movie-2021-no-johnny-cage-explained/
Vito performs a Fatality on a movie review and now is receiving offers from the Earthrealm and Outworld to join their team for the next tournament to decide the next film that will get torn a new one. Truly a Flawless Victory.
Some of the things I liked about the movie: 1. It got Scorpion correct with his Kunai (it's not a CGI serpent that lives in his hand) 2. Special moves are performed without slowing down the action of the fight 3. Better CGI 4. Raiden is more closely to his game design A new face in the franchise isn't the worst thing so I think it's cool that they created a new character for the movie. Johnny Cage will more likely appear in the sequel. Don't forget, movies that are based off of a video game or video game franchise doesn't have to follow the story told through the games, it can follow its own story and timeline that can be similar to the original story and timeline as well as throw in references to said story and timeline.
Just remember this was written with one of the geniuses from Wonder Woman 84 and done by a first time director. They should've gotten creatives that ACTUALLY respected the game's lore and competent direction. (Plus no studio interference, as the writer claimed)
The happy family in the protagonist doesn't work in these movies because in real life we know that people such happy won't risk their lives because they have to much to lose
I theorized that basically, they filmed all the Scorpian/Sub-zero fights "plot", then looked at the budget and realized they couldn't really afford to do what they wanted, rewrote all of it so that more than half the movie is in one dirt patch or Sonya's house.
Does anyone remember that web series they made a few years ago where MK was set in our world and it was supposed to be this gritty brutal crime action story?
Am I the only one mad that Raiden has only ever had one fight scene and that that was in Annihilation??? I mean, you can beat the first game with Raiden so why is he always sidelined for being "Too Powerful" I wanna see the thunder god kick ass!!!
Dude, I cared about Cole...getting off the screen as soon as possible. When the daughter says “bad ass suit dad” I was thinking, oh man, did they see the suit before writing that line? Cause the suit looked like some (very cheap, uninspired and generic) rubbery foamy cosplay. Kano essentially was Johhny Cage in this movie. They utilized him as the comedic relief, which has always been the way every movie used Cage. The only difference is, Kano turns instead of Cage all of a sudden taking things seriously.
Anyone else thought it wierd Cole goes from losing to mma jobber to beating Goro....the reigning champion of Mortal Kombat....and then he gets Scorpion as a summon.
I really believe they tried to move this franchise to the younger audience. Just like with the expendables when they brought in a new younger team, same schtick. You got all the old characters, but the main character is now a young new guy... Dumb idea.... They always do this...
Only way this would make sense is if they're bringing along the Next Gen fighters like Cassie, Jacqui and Kung Jin earlier along in the story, making Cole Young Takeda, which COULD work if done right but I doubt that's where they're going which sucks. Also that suit of armor he had that allows him to kill Goro was terrible plot armor
Apparently Cole Young was a studio mandated character which explains a lot The movie would've been better focusing on the game characters and the tournament. Even the sequel games had better writing than this movie
Get Woke... Go Broke. Seems to me like they wanted an Asian American protag. So no Liu Kang... no Johnny Cage... no Sonya. And they felt the need to invent a new Asian American everyman character. If they were so insistent on not having white everyman protags, they would've been better off at least using Jax. But I guess they wanted some kind of Asian-Centric theme.
It was better than I thought it would be, but it wasn't really anything super special. It was a good watch, but for the most part, you kinda just have to turn your brain off & just watch the fatalities. Similar to watching Godzilla vs Kong... don't over think it, just watch ape punch lizard & smile.
I'm still convinced that there were multiple directors because the cinematography in the Scorpion/Sub-Zero intro was peak and fast-paced while the rest of the movie never follows up with the same energy
No kidding I had to go to the bathroom during a chill scene. Not even a minute in and they're already fighting by the time I'm done and running back into the theater before I missed anything. Quickest piss I've ever taken
Every point you made in here is spot on, especially the stuff about Cole and his family. You have a movie that the audience only cares about the fighting and the tournament, and we have this main character who can't fight worth a shit and his family he forgot about halfway through the movie and we forgot about immediately after they left the screen. Plus, there wasn't even a tournament. All I feel is disappoinment from this film. The opening sequence was the best part of the movie, though, so I'll give them that (it's probably cuz Cole wasn't born yet).
@@hades4438 If he is good, I wish they had given him more of an opportunity to show his skills because I did not get that impression of him in the movie.
@@imanip7273 Exactly, he just beaten until he got armor and then beaten more. To be honest, the only parts we got some martial arts was only between ninjas. We should have some Raid level of fighting, uncut, unedited, long shots.
My thought with cole was subzero would kill his family cole without unlocking his arcana would fight and die to subzero while using scorpions dagger and that scorpion would come back from hell in coles body to become scorpion from the game
I hate to harp on this, but the reason they did not include Johnny Cage is because “his character would not mesh with the tone of the movie...” Ok, so how bout CHANGE THE TONE OF YOUR FUCKING MOVIE AND INSERT JOHNNY CAGE SO ITS BETTER!
When I watched the movie myself it genuinely confused me why they decided to make the plot revolve around this random OC with his own cool OC powers that seemed to be written by a DeviantArt writer, dumb down Mortal Kombat's powers to "oh it's magic lol" and put the epic duel between Scorpion and Sub-Zero on the sidelines for 95% of the movie. The only thing this movie gave me was a heart attack when Kano took Shinnok's Amulet and I thought Shinnok was gonna be in the movie.
This is one of those scam movies where you have to watch it so they make a sequel. Which will then be a straight to TV low budget crap fest as the producers sail away on their yachts.
Movie started off really strong, but then it just went progressively down hill. Between the terrible acting, awful main character, and uninspired subplot, I just couldn't wait for it to be over. Oh, not to mention THERE'S NO FREAKING TOURNAMENT IN THE MOVIE. How do you make a Mortal Kombat movie and leave out the biggest overarching event!?
i was like, 'who the fuck is cole?' i had to stop the movie to check it out, figuring he must be some character in the newer MK lore. nope. just some asshole they made up for reasons.
I thought of a quick fix (if we have to make boring Cole more interesting): When Sub-Zero comes in to kill Cole and his family, instead of Jax fighting Sub-Zero, make it Scorpion. Scorpion then brings Cole in and reveals himself as his father. Cole clearly isn't ready, so together they meet up with Jax and Sonya and Kano and trains with Liu Kang. Big epic showdown in that arena, Scorpion this time battles Sub-Zero to spare Cole and his family, but Scorpion this time dies at Sub-Zero's hands in front of Cole. The final showdown at the end then is Cole achieving his magic power thingy, except now he is the new Scorpion and has all of his abilities (and costume), avenging his father to save his own family, and avenging his mother and little brother who Sub-Zero killed. That at least would have given Cole some emotional stakes/narrative weight, and a reason to not want this to happen to his remaining family. It would have been so easy for them to have made this happen.
It’s laughable that the sequel is the quest to find Jonny Cage. Given they basically said having Jonny Cage be the hero would be cringe because white guy.
you forgot the build-up to the funniest scene dude. The lady who Kung Lao bifurcates is, in the big bad guys showcase, treated like an "OH SHIT!" threat, given so much emphasis... and as soon as she gets into a fight Kung Lao pushes her shit back in and kills her within seconds. They made a point to point her out, a little introduction and everything... acting like she's gonna just wreck the good guys... and as soon as she enters the big fight fest... Kung Lao pretty much one-shots her.
Cole is just the latest main protagonist in a long line of films that I like to call "Humans: With Special Guest Appearance Of A Well Known IP". Hollywood has this fascination with always needing to tell a given IP's story on the side in a forced larger unrelated shitty main story told through the eyes of a (usually) unrelated new human character or characters in a grounded real life reality and I hate it with every fiber of my being. Granted, this movie had a lot more of the original continuity being bastardized here then most of the films that came before it, but still. What's worse is that not only do we have this utterly ridiculous and absurd concept known as "Arcana" to poorly justify these actual MK characters being able to do the things they do in this grounded real life reality, but Cole's "Arcana" is LITERALLY PLOT ARMOR. Just as well, they took the stupidity even further by making the cybernetic enhancements that a couple of these characters could have actually had (in this grounded real life reality) magical "Arcana" powers instead.
The “GET OVER HERE” was so weak and non threatening how tf you gonna kill Kung Lao and the worst thing no fucking Johnny Cage and I thought this was gonna be a good video game movie I was so wrong
Because Scorpion and Sub-Zero(great personal story that only uses MK as a backdrop)aren't tied to the overall MK story like Shang Tsung, Goro(Outworld MK champions), Raiden(Earthrealm protector), Liu Kang and Kung Lao(descendants of the last Earthrealm MK champion)are.
It's not white walking to make Raiden a white guy, he's always been a white guy! From the very first Mortal Kombat video game to the Sub-Zero spin-off mythology game, in the 1995 movie in the cartoon, in the TV show based off of the great Kung Lao in the new Mortal Kombat 11! Don't give me that b******* that Raiden's whitewashing if he's a white guy. Do me a favor and tell me how many times Melania has been black! That's the real washing that's happening in Hollywood
Right? He's a god, he can make himself look like whatever he wants. He's even done it in at least one of the games. And on top of that, he was played by a different actor in the 2nd movie🤣🤣 Nevermind the fact that Mileena is asian, yet played by a black woman here. Just another actor that doesn't know crap about the character or story they're in...🤦♂️
@@ryonintaka7439 you must be an mk11 fan. I honestly thoght Cole would end up being scorpion too, but reincarnated or being possesed by the spirit of Hanzo hasshi and his arkana was hellfire. Also it wouldn't surprise me if Cole would end up in the next mortal kombat game for some reason.
I wouldn't mind Cole so much if they at least made him a badass fighter. But, nothing about him is appealing. He's without a single doubt the worst fighter in the movie, and it never gets better. He never becomes a great fighter. He's just so terrible that the tournament, or the gods or whoever is in charge of distributing powers looked at him and thought "oh, my god he's terrible...he's going to get himself killed". The tournament itself became sentient for a second and decided that his ability to get his ass kicked should be his akana and he got a stupid metal shirt that lets him get his ass kicked as much as he wants and it won't hurt
Easy to make this film much better🤔 There I fixed It!! - Scorpion Vs Sub-Zero keep as is. -Why not introduce Kabal, Sonia, Kano, Jax as in the Video game huh? 1. Follow up the intro with a S.W.A.T. VS Crime syndicate on each side. 2. Kabal dies get's sucked to NetherRealm and Kano/Sonia/Jaxx figures out woah; that was strange we should look into this. 3. Kano is inprisoned but later escapes to fight Cole in the ring. They both get a mark by fighting a bystander from NetherRealms and later finds Sonia to join teams. 4. Sonia and Jaxx go on a Tomb Raider mission to find out about Mortal Kombat. Jaxx loses his arms in an accident in a temple but Sonia finds a relic or some shit. -Raiden zappes to earth after fighting some NetherRealms characters that he was fighting before the tournament because they were trying to go to earth before the tournament, so we can introduce some bad guys here. -Raiden collects the team and trains them. -Then It's all Mayhem ftom here on all out. Gore fights galore in the videogames stages across the planet.. - Last scrne is a setup where the Gods are killed by Shang Tsung or whatever so we leave the movie when the characters go to NetherRealm to start a war! -Always skip kids and family in an action film, they ruin every goddamn scene!
Beside the CGI, this movie is utter shit on all levels. They should have made the Mortal Kombat like Marvel did with their superheroes. Basically, "extend" the serie's universe and divide them by characters according to the "introduction type" movies. For example, in one movie, there should be Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Kitana and Mileena. In the second movie - Johny Cage and Baraka as antagonist (or something), etc, and all those movies should lead to the Tournament (Avengers style epic ending). First phase - Introduction. Second phase - Attack on Earth where we should get introduced to Stryker, Kabal, Nightwolf, Sector, Cyrax... and Third phase - Tournament. CHANGE MY MIND.
My thoughts are that we don’t need a movie of games in general, let alone of Mortal Kombat. We have video games that look and feel like movies already, why the hell would we need video game movies anymore? Especially of mortal kombat. You know why people wanted to see a live action MK back then(Or any game for that matter)?Because that was the only way to see your favorite gaming icon in their most realistic or definitive way. Well now we don’t need that. The recent MK games(as well as any other franchise)have done a better job than the movies to do exactly what the movies were supposed to do back then. Seriously we don’t need video game movies anymore lol.
So Cole's daughter has the birthmark too? Or Cole's parent died when he was born? There hasnt been tournament since before 1617? Why did Raiden take Hanzos daughter then eff off for 400+ years? Man it's so bad 😒
I still just want to see a Mortal Kombat film based on the first game only, using the 80s kung fu style it originally parodied. Seems like that's the one idea no one ever thought of.
I feel like the main focus of Mortal Kombat should be about Ninjas and Kung Fu. Too many people think it's the blood and gore thats more important, but the 1995 movie proves how fun the franchise still is without blood. The video games also feel like I'm fighting mayonnaise.

I really love the actor who play scorpion but i don't know if it's him or the script they give , there is something very weird about how they deal the characters!
Who could have predicted the movie that cut iconic Johnny Cage for being white would be trash.
100% right. There’s so much lore around Scorpion and SubZero you could have easily just done a movie about those two (or 3 with sub zero 2)
And Quan Chi as the puppet master behind it all.
They could seriously dedicate a whole movie to each pair/trio of characters before doing a tournament movie that brings them all together.
Knew the movie would suck when the director said it would be “racist” to put Johnny Cage in the movie. Kano was the best part and I have a feeling that wasn’t their goal
He never said it would be "racist".
He just wanted a movie more based on asians. Stop putting words in his mouth.
@@TheMrCHELL it’s almost as if insinuation is a thing
Some of the things I liked about the movie:
1. It got Scorpion correct with his Kunai (it's not a CGI serpent that lives in his hand)
2. Special moves are performed without slowing down the action of the fight
3. Better CGI
4. Raiden is more closely to his game design
A new face in the franchise isn't the worst thing so I think it's cool that they created a new character for the movie. Johnny Cage will more likely appear in the sequel. Don't forget, movies that are based off of a video game or video game franchise doesn't have to follow the story told through the games, it can follow its own story and timeline that can be similar to the original story and timeline as well as throw in references to said story and timeline.
It became HBO's most successful launch in history, though.
Let that sink into your minds..

Gotta love a built-in box office
Jax’s tiny robot arms are so unsettling and I hate them
yeah, it looks like he borrowed them from star wars droid, disturbing and makes you wanna laugh.
Cole vs Goro was probably the stupidest part of the movie.
This movie was horrible. The first scene was badass, the rest is a trainwreck.
I think Cole should become Baraka, he has the arm blades already.
If they pull a Movie Resident Evil...

Mortal Kombat 1995 > Mortal Kombat 2021
Everyone agrees that the opening scene was amazing
Jax made that comment because he fought ICE-is (womp womp)
Anyone else thought it wierd Cole goes from losing to mma jobber to beating Goro....the reigning champion of Mortal Kombat....and then he gets Scorpion as a summon.
If it was Johnny Cage, that fight with Goro would of been better
I really believe they tried to move this franchise to the younger audience. Just like with the expendables when they brought in a new younger team, same schtick. You got all the old characters, but the main character is now a young new guy... Dumb idea.... They always do this...
Only way this would make sense is if they're bringing along the Next Gen fighters like Cassie, Jacqui and Kung Jin earlier along in the story, making Cole Young Takeda, which COULD work if done right but I doubt that's where they're going which sucks. Also that suit of armor he had that allows him to kill Goro was terrible plot armor
@@artofmartialcinemaamc5334 that makes me sad bc Lewis Tan would make a kick ass Takeda
Apparently Cole Young was a studio mandated character which explains a lot
The movie would've been better focusing on the game characters and the tournament. Even the sequel games had better writing than this movie
I think I'll just stick with Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's revenge when it comes to MK movies.
Get Woke...
Yes
Exactly!
I'm still convinced that there were multiple directors because the cinematography in the Scorpion/Sub-Zero intro was peak and fast-paced while the rest of the movie never follows up with the same energy
Yeah it's like they got a whole of a different team to handle that scene.
Im kind of excited for the sequel because the entirety of the Mortal Kombat tournament is action.
Cole actor is a good martial artist. I don't blame him to be the "Cole" we see. He could work too but it's clearly a writing problem.
My thought with cole was subzero would kill his family cole without unlocking his arcana would fight and die to subzero while using scorpions dagger and that scorpion would come back from hell in coles body to become scorpion from the game
... and it started so well. I was open to giving Cole a chance, but his character is really, really unnecessary.
I hate to harp on this, but the reason they did not include Johnny Cage is because “his character would not mesh with the tone of the movie...”
Ok, so how bout CHANGE THE TONE OF YOUR FUCKING MOVIE AND INSERT JOHNNY CAGE SO ITS BETTER!
That requires writing, duh
I think another reason why is because they thought that if they cage in the movie, it would have been the first one all over again
4:40 orphans don’t sprout from the streets!
You have parents, YOU JUST DON’T KNOW THEM!
XD
When I watched the movie myself it genuinely confused me why they decided to make the plot revolve around this random OC with his own cool OC powers that seemed to be written by a DeviantArt writer, dumb down Mortal Kombat's powers to "oh it's magic lol" and put the epic duel between Scorpion and Sub-Zero on the sidelines for 95% of the movie.
The only thing this movie gave me was a heart attack when Kano took Shinnok's Amulet and I thought Shinnok was gonna be in the movie.
Kang Lau can also teleport but they only used it once in the movie which makes no sense he shouldn't have been snatched up by Shang Tsung so easily
Indeed
I would've been fine with it...but Kung Lao should've been the one who killed Goro.
Now THAT'S how you tell a "bloodline" story.

Man you nailed all my thoughts on this movie, next time someone asks me what i thought i'm linking this
This movie is not Mortal Kombat. This movie is MORTAL WARMUP (to an actual Mortal Kombat movie)
18:25 Wasn't that one of his Fatality's?
This is one of those scam movies where you have to watch it so they make a sequel. Which will then be a straight to TV low budget crap fest as the producers sail away on their yachts.
Disaster is a strong word. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t horrible either.
I Know right, so stupid
Also the point of Cole is wasted considering Sonya, Jax and Kano are all fish out of water characters that do what Cole was supposed to do but better
i was like, 'who the fuck is cole?' i had to stop the movie to check it out, figuring he must be some character in the newer MK lore. nope. just some asshole they made up for reasons.
At least we didn't hear "REEEEEEEEEEY!" The whole time
Isn't Raiden caucasian in the games? So the Lambert casting wouldn't be whitewashing
Cole wasn't needed...
I wouldn’t even call the second “fight” a fight. It was Jax getting his ass kicked
I don't understand why they want to add Cole when they are putting tons of fan service too..
Me seeing the movie poster: "oh subzero or scorpion is the main character".
Me after seeing the movie: "WHY WASN'T SCORPION THE MAIN CHARACTER?!"
PERFECT Review Vito, exactly what I thought
He’s so on point
It's not white walking to make Raiden a white guy, he's always been a white guy! From the very first Mortal Kombat video game to the Sub-Zero spin-off mythology game, in the 1995 movie in the cartoon, in the TV show based off of the great Kung Lao in the new Mortal Kombat 11! Don't give me that b******* that Raiden's whitewashing if he's a white guy. Do me a favor and tell me how many times Melania has been black! That's the real washing that's happening in Hollywood
Remember, the guy who plays Jax claimed the old MK was racist with white washing having lambert as raiden... I still chuckle when I read that...

Right? He's a god, he can make himself look like whatever he wants. He's even done it in at least one of the games. And on top of that, he was played by a different actor in the 2nd movie🤣🤣

Cole’s arcana was literal plot armor
Wish they could write a good script for a movie like they do for mortal kombat story modes.
I was just pissed that they kicked out Johnny Cage to be replaced with generic protagonist man.
Kano is canonically a bad guy. I just don't see how you could make it work with him as a good guy.
Yeah his betrayal made sense
Cole was the biggest betrayal.. I thought he'll be the scorpion or something but no.. He kinda become something like scorpion but not him
My thoughts are that we don’t need a movie of games in general, let alone of Mortal Kombat.
Just focus on making sequels to the animated film scorpions revenge. Honestly that’s all we ever needed. I highly recommend that one
So Cole's daughter has the birthmark too? Or Cole's parent died when he was born? There hasnt been tournament since before 1617? Why did Raiden take Hanzos daughter then eff off for 400+ years? Man it's so bad 😒
Hate how this movie wasn't even mainly about Scorpion and Sub-Zero the ICONS OF MORTAL KOMBAT
The arena looks like a holdover from Star Trek TNG.
I still just want to see a Mortal Kombat film based on the first game only, using the 80s kung fu style it originally parodied. Seems like that's the one idea no one ever thought of.
I like how vito's facecam is shaky or on a lower fps because it feels like he is talking about the mortal combat movie
Lui Kang was literally the main character of the MK I think.. He won the tournaments quite a few times
I saw someone commented on a different video about cole young’s arcana “cole young’s arcana is plot armor” and he couldn’t be more right.
I'm pretty sure someone commented that in this video.
Ads for movies should NEVER be:

Finally a Mortal Kombat review I can enjoy ☺️
"why can't we just have a movie that is all fights, no plots."
Yes!
I feel like the main focus of Mortal Kombat should be about Ninjas and Kung Fu. Too many people think it's the blood and gore thats more important, but the 1995 movie proves how fun the franchise still is without blood. The video games also feel like I'm fighting mayonnaise.
Biggest thing everyone missed, was that Raiden said that Shang Tsung came before the tournament begins so that Tsung can win. MK1 is the next movie.
