  • Just a little footage from the Austin Cassette Fest 2014. When I first heard about the fest I thought it would be a cassette version of a record show. It turned out to be a cassette "label" fest. Watch the video real close. You'll see the cassette label vendors are letting people listen to their bands with headphones hooked to laptops. One label has an mp3 player hooked to a cassette boombox. Lol,, that was so lame. I don't think a cassette was ever played the whole time I was there. It would have been nice to see used / rare tapes, vintage decks and boomboxes for sale or at least on display. I had a good time but they'll need to broaden the scope for me to attend next year. That being said The Austin Cassette Fest delivered exactly what was on their web site and it appeared to be successful.

Our flea markets here in San Antonio have a ton of cassettes, great selection, good prices & no hipster types.

When I was filming and walking up to the venue I said "this looks like a bunch of hipsters". I edited it out. Still it was an interesting event and well organized being a first of it's kind. Used tapes and gear for sale or at least on display would have made it more enjoyable for me.

Also, I think what they did was engage in false advertising. They should have specified more.

There were used tapes and used gear for sale, but you skipped right over them (on the video as well). Also, more than half the labels there had tape decks or players to listen to the music on. As far as "hipsters" go-- I didn't see that many at all (I tabled at the event). To me, that word is becoming a go to term for those that either wear Tap Out t-shirts or are just plain inarticulate. Judging from the video, you came in late and must have missed what you were looking for, especially since a good chunk of it was sitting at the table in the front by the doors. The video is cool, but the snap judgements, jadedness, and summary of an event you barely took the time to delve into is something real "hipsters" are known to do.

The concept of labels returning to a cassette format is very intriguing. And to see that many people who are interested or involved is also intriguing. I wonder if this type of thing is happening in other places, if there is a real cassette underground that could gain mass popularity. The idea is anti-digital and very analog. Are these folks appreciative of analog sound or are they just being contrarian?

Based on seeing the labels letting people preview the music on digitals files leads me to think they're just being contrary.

punktexas That's quite an assumption. Keep in mind that many people don't even download digital files anymore, they just stream it. If using mp3s and bandcamp as previews gets people interested in tape, more power to the labels that use those to share music and sell cassettes.
It all varies right now. Some labels are extremely lo-fi and use crap players and others put stuff out on chrome tapes recorded on hi-fi decks. Some people are sincerely interested in the format and it's history and others aren't. I was at the fest and found plenty of enthusiasm and sincerity there. Not 100% but c'mon, it's a public event in "hip" town.
I admit I've seen some labels and tape releases that seem more fad-ish and gimmicky (the Cassette Store Day last year had a lot of this tbh). A lot of people want to put out a personable physical item that isn't as expensive as vinyl and they want to sell, trade, and share tapes with people IRL, not just spam the internet or try to get access through PR firms or tastemaker review sites.
Personally I'm stoked for the current resurgence in tape labels and cassette culture. The posers and superficial contrarians will come and go, focusing on that is a bit too cynical in my opinion.
