  • Can we save the 1.0 ecoboost engine having suffered low oil pressure due to the wetbelt (cam belt) failing and blocking the oil pump. Or is it a new engine required?

Oil is the killer on these cars. I change my oil so regularly. Because it is direct injection and turbo charged, some fuel gets blown past the rings.
Now, the adative in the fuel degrades the oil, which eats the rubber of the wet belt. I got this information straight from Ford, so it's not made up.

This is just one of those engines where you think "why?" My other half had one in her Focus. Got a call one day to say she had got it home but it was seriously down on power. Pulled the sump off and found the oil strainer was clogged up with oil that resembled Sikoflex. The oil starvation had killed the bearings in the turbo (hence the loss of power) I Removed the oil pump and cleaned it thoroughly and also fitted a used turbo. When I had the sump pan removed you could inspect the belt. I cranked it round by hand and no teeth were missing. Took a bit of a gamble on not changing the belt and got away with it. Not a job I fancied trying to tackle on the driveway. Wet belts are just disasters waiting to happen. I'm kinda surprised nobody has come out with a chain conversion for this engine. Granted, chains have their own issues, but degrading into the engine oil isn't one of them 🙂

Well a chain running in a constant oil bath would be good anyway. Just needs a tensioner The oil pump could be a chain, it only drives the pump , so no timing required just drive.
Had my belt go 2 weeks ago. 2017 zetec 87k miles. Oil change every 10k. But a lot of stop/start driving in town .

Luckily I was close to a layby, stopped there and had it towed. It was low oil pressure, wet belt degraded and rubber bits in the pump.

The belt in oil is one issue, the belt tensioner is a time bomb, even if the tensioner doesn’t fail, the belt teeth fill the oil pump and starve the mains of oil, other issues, the gears have no key way, and only held in place by torque, once I saw the inside of one of these I was shocked, this has to be one of the worst engines I have ever seen. Inside, and from an engineering point of view. I am amazed people have these still running. I have yet to see inside a 2.0 ecosport.
