Catios are such a wonderful idea for cats. You're 100% right that the outdoors aren't safe for cats and cats aren't safe for the outdoors, but my cats really really adore our little screened in porch, and I'll be very sad when we move away from this house and they don't have it anymore.

We adopted our kitty Teaspoon as a stray "teen" kitten who was already used to being outside. We have let him be indoor/outdoor for the past year. However, the roofs in our condos were replaced a few months ago and apparently parts were not resealed correctly. Teaspoon got stuck in a roof space in another building for 2 weeks and almost died! Thankfully the maintenance man heard him crying and got him out. I was hesitant to let him out after that - but thought he surely wouldn't repeat the stunt. But he went missing again about a month later. After 2 and a half weeks I had given up hope until I heard a cry as I was walking my dog past an empty condo - he was in the window pawing at the glass. He had gotten in through the roof and could not get out! He had gone without food all that time! The owner lives out of state - but I was able to get her phone # from our HOA. She did not want to bothered and in fact lied at one point saying she had sent someone over to the condo and no cat was in the property! I texted her photos of my cat sitting in the window that included her condo number and told her I was calling the police/fire dept if she refused to do anything. She FINALLY called a locksmith (which I of course paid for) - after 12 hours of playing games with me. $300 later - my cat was finally out! His outdoor cat days are OVER!
Roof - could swap that opaque thing with a sheet of corrugated transparent stuff. I'd also suggest positioning adjacent to house to make a dry corner with dry access from the house - so they can go outside yet stay dry. My cat spends time in our front porch - sheltered yet outside. (edited - deleted stray letters and added the missing ones.)
I love it when people build catios for their kitties. I feel like it’s really important and good to bring indoor cats at least some sort of access outside too, and I honestly think this is the best way to do so as they dont have to be on a leash (which isnt bad either, I just prefer this). It also tells how mich the owner loves their cats.
@@bluecurlygirl shelving is pretty cheap, look around on garbage day for people throwing out old cabinets and just dismantle them. The caging is the most expensive part, but it doesn't have to be this huge and cats can be blocked in with chicken wire which is pretty cheap.
It says in the pinned comment that the slope was made less steep so that Bella could climb. Bella is an old cat so it needs to be easier for her so she doesn’t get hurt
Thanks for acknowledging the ecological impact of cats on wildlife. I think that part of the video was well presented and not one-sided. That catio looks so great! Also love the way you put the drill sounds in musically some how? very satisfying.
It gives me a happy feeling inside watching your videos purely because of how much you love your cats and going to great lengths to make them happy. And you take time out of your own life to make them castles or cat patios. Well done you are 100% my favorite youtuber. RIP Reggie And Tom
@@sharonhill7363 From what i can remember, Reggie got sick and Tom just passed due to complications with old age. but I believe he has older videos with/about them.
I work at a veterinary hospital and the gruesome (mostly car accident) injuries I see daily make me believe letting your cat outside is cruel. Love that catio!
It’s not cruel to allow a living thing freedom, but yes if you live on a busy road you have to think if you can give the animal the life it deserves. I only know one person who kept their cat indoors and I felt sorry for them. However, that was due to them being in a busy area and the cats being expensive so possibility of stealing. We lived in a village and for my cats it would’ve been cruel to keep them indoors. They would choose to spend most of the day outside and come in at night to sleep with us humans.
@@pinkrosegurl6987 Because it's not that simple?? Anything outside can be dangerous for your cat - cars, heights, larger predators, other cats, parasites, rat poison, poisonous plants.... the list goes on. Where is it safe, then? Plus, house cats are an invasive species that is known to decimate small wildlife. A discussion about this is more than valid.
Has anyone realized that he times all the things to the background music? The drilling is most noticeable but imagine how much effort he puts into a single video…… UA-cam really is a better place with him.
I wish more people would consider the impact of letting their cats free room. We've always had pet rabbits, we'd let run in our garden (proper dug in fences that were 3m above ground). And cats would climb the fences and attack them, one of our rabbits was even killed. It sucks cause we really didn't have a way of keeping them out.
@@driftwood4960 birds are more scarce and as well they have an effect on eco systems some birds keep insects at lower population numbers with cats killing them they help contribute to more insects. Mosquitoes are one example.
It’s also so dangerous to the cats. I found a dead cat by the side of the road when walking to catch the train to work about 20 years ago. It was clear the person or people in the car stopped & likely felt bad. The cat did not appear to be feral, it looked like a well fed, well cared for house cat, he or she might have had a flea collar too, I don’t remember. But no tag with info, which I think the people must have been looking for. So they had covered the cat’s body with a towel (they moved the cat out of the road too & onto the curb.) The head wasn’t covered & it looked like one of my cats I had at the time. I looked under the towel for any marks I recognized (the wound on this cat was awful, this was 20 years ago, it haunts me still.) I couldn’t be sure, so despite thinking I’d miss the train, I ran home just to be sure my cat was still inside, even though I knew my cat hadn’t snuck out as I left for work because that wasn’t a thing my cat ever did. I just knew that I’d illogically worry all day that was my cat & I simply couldn’t recognize him in the state the dead cat was in. Outdoor cats aren’t as streetwise as people think. Plus, the most streetwise animal can’t deal with a human who is driving recklessly, or we’d never see dead wild animals like squirrels in the road. Keep your pets inside unless you are with them or provide a safe space like a catio
Im watching this channel after 3-4 years. Bella’s and Ralph are adorable but honestly no word can describe heir cuteness not even numbers. I will use this channel when I keep my own cat thanks a lot for all these cat advises.
the amount of effort he puts into videos is immeasurable, and the fact he did all this for is cats is so nice and heart warming, i cant believe the amount of time it would have taken to edit this video,
When we wanted to take our cat out we put a leash on him and took him to the park. We brought an extendable leash to let him run around a bit. In our back yard we never let him leave the yard and always stand right next to him or close without a leash so he can roam freely.
Same, we used to let our cat outside freely and it was fine. Then he started a habit of climbing to the top of our 50 ft tree and getting stuck. Then he would just jump off and get scared and hurt. Now we have to keep him on a leash
Same, I live in a top floor apartment and my cat still goes outside almost daily. I just stand there while he sniffs around the neighbors patio and torments their indoor cat through the glass patio door. He's usually done with his "walk" after 10 minutes and runs back up the stairs when he hears any loud noise lol
I love how Ralph tried not to use the climbing steps on his way down and figured out it would be better to just use them. It’s so cute to see him carefully make his way down by stepping on them lol.
I love this channel so much, almost any other UA-camr would have picked up their cats and put them in the bubble just for content, but you don’t because you can see that they don’t want to go in. It shows that your really love them and it’s amazing.
Brilliant. I cried laughing at several points in this. "I can't wait to see them not use it" either. I love how Ralph was hitting every paw of the climbing things and Bella avoided them at her peril. Aw poor Bella and her little donut. They're both beautiful kitties. They're lucky to have found a home with you. Talk about being spoiled rotten.
For the people who said its cruel to have a cat indoors... well, there are in fact cats who prefer to be indoors. They'll probably like some fresh air but they don't necessarily go out. Keep a window/door open on hot days (with fence so they dont fall out) and they'll love sitting in that spot. Or a cat patio if thats possible :P
Agreed. My cats yammer on at 5:00 until I finally take them onto the balcony if our apartment. They stay out there for 10 minutes and then want to go back in and don’t ask to go out again until the next day at 5:00 am. I used to feel guilty until they started choosing to go in after a few minutes. Cats adapt pretty easily. At least I’ve never had any issue.
@@tramsroy Dude, like Kathryn says below your comment, he/she takes the cats out but then they want to go in again after a few minutes. This is a similar example to my sisters cat, who love to lie in the sun but it doesnt like going outside that much. For myself, I had my cat outdoors, but it was an easy place for him as the plot was gigantic. He would spend the summers outside for a long time, but when it was winter or rainy he'd come back in and stay indoors for the most part unless he had to do his business(no cat toilet, he rarely used it) If you're assuming apartment people should have their cats more outdoors, well, they'll need a harness and supervision then. Which isn't exactly - natural for them either. See cats more like humans instead. Some cats love to be outside, others prefer to be inside while some other cats prefer to be a bit everywhere
I imagine any person would also also prefer being indoors if that's where they've been all their life. All creatures are hesitant about the unkown. I'm against having 100% indoor cats, I think people should normalize taking cats on walks(Yes, on a leash). After all, people would say it's cruel to keep a dog inside all its life, never going for walks, so why is it ok for cats?
@@gretafreitag2041 Very true! Taking cats on walks with you is healthy for the cat and keeps them out of harms way, unlike just letting them roam free. Letting cats roam free is more cruel than keeping them indoors as it can kill them and 100% kills wildlife. Taking them on walks on a leash is a great idea :)
lol I have to admit I was thinking, why not just turn the board over and use it with the battens right-side up? The kitties would like it and you don't have to add in the expense of the grips. It *might* be easier for Bella, too, who is sliding around a bit trying to get down without touching the grips. Still, AWESOME build
Chris: "My garden is the size of a postage stamp..." reveals his 400 sq ft garden. Realtors in the U.S.: "This apartment features a luxurious outdoor patio..." reveals an 8 sq ft cement square looking out on a highway. "Isn't this lovely?"
I'm still trying to get used to the idea of Britishers referring to their backyard as a "garden": I keep looking for the vegetables and/or flowers, lol! :)
One suggestion I'd make is to get a thin door mat and cut a strip to glue up the centre of the ramp for Bella. She's not thrilled about the little grippies and likely would find using her claws for stability as she makes her way up and down easier. Otherwise, I adore this catio idea. I'm an Aussie and, like you guys, our cats are mostly indoor to preserve native wildlife and reduce the enormous population of feral cats we already have. I live in an area densely populated by native animals and a catio -- even a free-standing one with a tunnel to get back indoors -- would be perfection. Good on you for doing right by your cats AND by the natives who were there first.
I would like to give this as an attempt to express empathy 🫴(😭/😢) I think a dead pet seems next to impossible to overcome (I know I'm talking about grief)
This video is the reason my old catio exists, it was the way the idea was thought of to make it. I still miss it, but at least the new owners of that house had a cat so they could use the catio. My little babies Rocket and Loki are waiting for the big move to our forever house where they will have a better catio. This video is a favourite, and I still remember when it said ‘Created 7 Months Ago’. Little nostalgia wave for me! Hope Ralph and Bella are enjoying your presence and they are ok! Love Bella’s donut though Lol :)

I've lost so many of my kitties since moving to this state from predators,I finally lost it and discovered CATIOS on Pinterest. Now my cats can run free and I don't have to worry like I did. CATIOS are the best, great job! P.S. maybe add some pieces of outdoor carpet to the climbing board for more traction.🐱🐾🐾🐾💖
Thank you for providing both sides of the indoor/outdoor argument. I'm for indoors with outdoor time supervised or on a harness with leash. As you said, cats are proficient hunters and, like humans, enjoy hunting for the sport of it and can be very destructive to the local ecosystem. Catios are a great in-between solution!
This is a very loving and thoughtful, cat owner. The catio, was also a great idea, for having the cats outdoors, without worrying, about the dangers present, in the environment, for letting them outside. Now they just have to get used to the idea, of being outdoors and enjoying, their freedom.
Hi, this is an incredible deed of mercy and care, which I adore! What a patio! But I immediately thought of the following. - Is it safe to keep the lights in the open air under conditions of the British weather? Is is safe as to shortcuts in the times of rain? - I would suggest to smoothen (polish) every plywood and wood piece and to cover them with some stuff that is soft and not sliding, so that cats wouldn't injure their soft paws with woody stingy chops. or maybe to wrap them in some special protective material. - Same thoughts are about the sitting places - they have straight and rough edges and corners which are better be trimmed and covered with protective rubbers or sorta that, what about taking them off and cutting to ovals or at least rectangles with rounded corners? Cats could be absolutely protected at the moment of speedy springs. - What about translucent materials for the roof - I think I saw smth like this made of heat proof plastic. You then could cover the entire patio without blocking the natural light in the area. Apart from that the idea is marvelous and I keep on thinking of doing smth of the kind in my apartment. Thank you for showing that brilliant solutions are not that complicated to bring into life! Lotta love for your fluffy friends!
This was a month ago but I'll try and answer some!! The lighting: the UK often has weather proofed electronics especially for the outdoors! Since we are so used to weird changes so suddenly, alot of our housing is built around keeping rain and the cold out, whilst being dry and warm indoors! The clear roofing: whilst it would maybe look nicer, sadly it would create a greenhouse effect, or magnifying glass effect where the occasional sun would become hotter! And because Ralph is also a black cat with extra fluff.. a no go sadly - and I'm not too sure how accessable heat-proof plastic is here!! I hope this helped a little !!
@@Hajiki_ ' absolutely clear. I just wanted to share my thoughts that brought me an instant discomfort and worry about the cats while I watched. You know these thing when you scrutinize smth of top interest for your loved ones whom I have two. This is why... But anyway the project is great and deserves all respect, admiration, and time for improvements and further development. Good luck and give hugs for you fluffy little gods from us! Thank you!
Also, the reason for not covering the wood with softer materials is because of the wet weather the UK often gets. If the wood was covered with fabric of any kind, like a cat tree would be, it would not hold up for very long. The wood beneath would stay wet longer than it does when it is bare because the fabric would hold the dampness in. This would cause the wood to rot faster and then be more dangerous for the kitties. Even worse is that the fabric would be wet and cold, making it uncomfortable for the kitties because their fur does not repel water the same way a dog's fur does, and they would be cold out there and would probably not use the catio. As to smoothing out the wood, you actually do not want to do that as it will make the surface slick and hard for the kitties to grip. The pads on the bottom of cats' feet feet provide traction, and are coarse to increases friction when walking Cat paws contain large concentrations of nerve receptors, turning your cat's cute paws into finely tuned sensory organs. Because of these receptors, cats can feel changes in texture, pressure, and possibly vibrations through their paw pads. It has been my personal experience that my cats are therefore more careful about where they put their feet and how much pressure they put down, moving their paws off something sharp before they ever put any pressure on them. None of my cats has ever come to me with a splinter. My dogs, however, don't seem to feel such things until they have well and truly stepped on them and it's buried in their paw, at which point my cats look at them disdainfully and shake their heads at the dog's foolishness. 😆
I’m pretty sure those are climbing wall grips for humans, how does he think the cats are going to grip them?? 😂 that plank needs astroturf or some other grippy surface so they can walk on it comfortably! 😭😭😭
@@Chickienugs A cat can't grip them but the angle of them can limit how far their paws can slip down and prevent them from needing their claws to climb up.
NICE addition. I would suggest: - sealer for whole thing, if you haven't yet, as the humidity will hurt that wood over time. - some holes in the bottom of that bowl so water doesn't pool up
This gorgeous video melted all my anxiety and made me feel happy again after so much bad political news. What a talented carpenter and empathetic and endearing man!
This is so cool! I love how much care and consideration went into this. The climbing steps are adorable, and so is Bella avoiding them. Great job! Thank you for sharing your building adventure. :D
when you said in the beginning, It's often not safe for cats to stay outside: These were my thoughts too when I decide to buy another cat in 2013. The previous cat, Nero, died because a car run over him. So I wanted a cat who never was outdoors before. My thoughts were "he can't miss what he never had." We moved a year later and now we're next to a street with lots of traffic. But we have a small balcony and guess what? He can go outside, but never attempts so jump off from it. But the "Catio" is a very good Idea. If we had a Garden, I would build one, too. :)
It’s actually quite dangerous to have a cat on an unsecured balcony as short distance falls doesn’t leave them the distance to turn into a safe stance should they ever trip and fall from the edge. Please look into a catio option of putting mesh around the balcony. Even if you don’t have a balcony above to simply attach the mesh. You can put down plant pots filled with soil and put the wood posters in there. That way you can built a catio like in this video but without needing to cement the posters in. I have had a built like that on two different balconies and it kept my kittens and older cats safe.
you could turn that balcony INTO a catio, even just some enhanced fencing and a cat tree could be completely loved! :) theres always ways to do things that dont leave a trace if you put the work in! outdoors can be dangerous to cats, but they dont need it so long as you give them a good enough life inside. if you ever get another cat that really wants to go outside maybe look into harness training them (Jackson Galaxy has good videos on how)! itll let them go outside while still being safe much like walking a dog does! though its not the exact same lol. a great way to provide enrichment to an indoor cat too is do what chris here did, give them a spot they can watch a bird feeder from! and its safe for everyone involved
I'm sure the structure is designed to lean against the house without the use of fasteners. The only destructive means shown in the video were employed on the lawn, where he anchored the outer posts. It's similar to how I built my catio at a rental home, where the entire assembly is braced against the exterior wall with a couple of deck screws.
This is so adorable, and a wonderful thing for you to do. I've always loved the idea of catios and catifying your house too, I just think it's amazing seeing them enjoy themselves! But not many people are willing or able to change their homes like that. So it's lovely to see!
@@h.m.tolympic4669 leash training cats is actually amazing, it's a bit different than dogs since the cat hauls you around but it's still very fun, I love seeing where my cat brings me, since we have a lot of predators where I live I don't think a catio is a good idea for us since they can't hold bears back or keep coyotes from digging in so it's our alternative.
I know lol Idk, maybe the landlord approved it and will add it as an amenity to the next renter. Id go for it "And outside, we have a patio and cat playground. A nice little place to have a picnic while your feline friends play."

I work at a veterinary hospital and the gruesome (mostly car accident) injuries I see daily make me believe letting your cat outside is cruel. Love that catio!
The word you're looking for is "dangerous". At best you could go for "reckless".
"Cruelty" implies ill intent while maintaining a state of suffering.
@@LJ-kj4ro I feel bad for your local wildlife that you're unleashing an invasive predatory species upon...
I think you should let your cat outside if it's safe for them I don't understand how people are arguing over this
@@pinkrosegurl6987 Because it's not that simple?? Anything outside can be dangerous for your cat - cars, heights, larger predators, other cats, parasites, rat poison, poisonous plants.... the list goes on. Where is it safe, then? Plus, house cats are an invasive species that is known to decimate small wildlife. A discussion about this is more than valid.
Has anyone realized that he times all the things to the background music? The drilling is most noticeable but imagine how much effort he puts into a single video…… UA-cam really is a better place with him.
Hello Arisha how are you doing today
yes i did know
I wish more people would consider the impact of letting their cats free room. We've always had pet rabbits, we'd let run in our garden (proper dug in fences that were 3m above ground). And cats would climb the fences and attack them, one of our rabbits was even killed. It sucks cause we really didn't have a way of keeping them out.
Cats kill way too many birds as well
Population control
Keep your pets inside unless you are with them or provide a safe space like a catio

the amount of effort he puts into videos is immeasurable, and the fact he did all this for is cats is so nice and heart warming, i cant believe the amount of time it would have taken to edit this video,
When we wanted to take our cat out we put a leash on him and took him to the park.

People who think keeping a ct indoors must really love having a dead cat
He would spend the summers outside for a long time, but when it was winter or rainy he'd come back in and stay indoors for the most part unless he had to do his business(no cat toilet, he rarely used it)
If you're assuming apartment people should have their cats more outdoors, well, they'll need a harness and supervision then.
Ralph: "Okay, gotta use these weird shaped things to go up and down this board!"
Bella: "If I touch the weird shapes, I DIE!"
lol I have to admit I was thinking, why not just turn the board over and use it with the battens right-side up? The kitties would like it and you don't have to add in the expense of the grips. It *might* be easier for Bella, too, who is sliding around a bit trying to get down without touching the grips. Still, AWESOME build

I would suggest:
- sealer for whole thing, if you haven't yet, as the humidity will hurt that wood over time.
- some holes in the bottom of that bowl so water doesn't pool up

when you said in the beginning, It's often not safe for cats to stay outside: These were my thoughts too when I decide to buy another cat in 2013.
@Raven Alexander Pumpkin and Popcorn? Those are adorable names for cats. Who in the world would make fun of that!
you could turn that balcony INTO a catio, even just some enhanced fencing and a cat tree could be completely loved!

Cue the pre-recorded laughter and drums.
That mesh joke was so good I can’t even be mad..
I've seen you in my childhood, you make my dreams come true!
BRUH SAME
What a good cat owner! I'm in an apartment so the best I can do is open windows (with supervision) for fresh air and have lots of cat trees!
Idea: Buy a cat lead/ harness, take them for walkies
@@h.m.tolympic4669 leash training cats is actually amazing, it's a bit different than dogs since the cat hauls you around but it's still very fun, I love seeing where my cat brings me, since we have a lot of predators where I live I don't think a catio is a good idea for us since they can't hold bears back or keep coyotes from digging in so it's our alternative.
Chris: I only rented this house
also Chris: *staight up cementing wooden pillars into the ground*
I know lol
Idk, maybe the landlord approved it and will add it as an amenity to the next renter.
Id go for it
"And outside, we have a patio and cat playground.
A nice little place to have a picnic while your feline friends play."
Cemented posts CAN be removed, but it takes hours.
He can dig out the pillars 87
I mean, if you just chop off the visible part, it won't leave much of a mark other than a tiny bit of wood
That's going to add value to the property for the next tenants. I don't see how the landlord would mind.
back when my cats were kittens they loved the dome on their cat tree.
Oh so it may be a size ussue !!!
Your cats are so cute! 🤍🩶🖤🩵💛🤍

what about Bella?
no, no, no, he´s got a point
I was thinking the same.
I really don't like this protective way of treating his cats. They are not fluff toys.
@@RandomUser2401 Is keeping them safe wrong? No, its not. It’s inhuman, you are wrong.
I love this! Well done! We just took in a stray who quickly produced 3 kittens!! We’re keeping 2 of them plus Mum as the other kitten has a wonderful home with a lovely friend of ours. My husband has spent hours installing angled brackets and wire mesh all around our garden. We did this years ago for our other cats so they could also enjoy the outdoors but not climb out. Having lost cats in the past I could never take a chance and let them wander. Too many threats out there.
