- Common Issue with seized front upper suspension ball joint bolt. Find these on Audi A4 A6 A8, VW Passat Phaeton, Bentley Continental GT, Had to remove the bolt for a spring replacement
- Авто та транспорт
Not a good idea to tighten the upper control arms until the suspension is compressed to its normal ride position. You’ll tear the bushings if you do. Use a spin jack under the lower control arm if you’re working on a lift or simply floor jack it if you’re on jack stands. That also alights the upper ball joints so they drop in easier.
The person or persons in R&D at Volkswagen Audi should be jailed for this idiotic design.
Great content. Thank you, Sir!
Wow, that was some effort! My wife's Alfa Romeo Mito had a broken O/S/F Spring that failed the MOT [obviously]. A local friendly garage in the industrial estate changed it and re MOT'd it all for £99.48. I'm inclined to think that your customer's bill may have been significantly higher! Good video as usual without the usual american histrionics.
Much higher, thanks for watching 🙂👍
I usually use 1 layer of electrical tape on the bolt then grease that up bolt comes out nice and easy next time round 👍🏻
Hi Mel. Great video. Difficult work. I see some letters and identity markings on that special tool. But there are hard to see. Kindly if you may, share what those letters and markings are. That is great tool.
Another excellent vid Mel showing why I would never buy an Audi
I'm not a lover of German cars, but people love them and it keeps me in work. Thanks for watching 😊👍
It's deliberately designed like that to stop people diy'ing it.
This is the most professional job that I see on Internet ... really impressed...
Hi Mel. At about the 3:03 mark, it looks like there is a Brand mark and number visible on the lower tool bracket, but can't quite make it out on video. Can you clarify? Might help in the tool search. Cheers!
Made my own tool. Different than yours but it pulls the bolt out in one go. Still need to finalise the CAD drawings as I made some changes along the way. Requires a lot less effort.
Bit of penetrating oil wouldn't go amiss
Aah i see you have never had to deal with this 🙏
There's a special place in hell reserved for the "design engineer" who is responsible for unleashing this evil upon the world
🥴🫣🤣👍
Привіт,гарний пристрій!
If you drop the top mount you would get enough clearance to remove the inner top joints l know that dosnt solve the sided pinch bolt but you can replace the spring
absolutely!! why remove that bitch if you don't need to!!! I snapped one off and had to replace the knuckle...
Hi very good job who makes that tool
Thanks for watching, the tool was handed down from dad, not sure where from!
Those uppers will not last too long the way you did that job...ideally measure the centre of the wheel to the wing arch wen car in still on the ground....then when tightening the upper control arm bolts raise the hub and measure the centre to the same height as on the ground so as not to have any stress on the rubber mounts...👍
With a broken road spring! Genius!
@@fiercefix after the spring was changed use above procedure..🙄
Agree. He was supposed to fix the arms in ride height position.
What spanners, do you use, or recommend that are good quality but won't break the bank. Sorry, forgot to add great video.
Hi James, I use Snap-On spanners, the guys use a combination of tools including Halford's professional, they have a life time guarantee with a no quibble exchange in store, very affordable. Great time to buy is usually around a bank holiday weekend, Easter is coming and they do great deals, keep your receipts though! And thanks for watching 👍
they can most certinly be heated and removed without breaking did one today both sides
Well done you, you should have done a video of it. 🙂👍
I wish I knew the name of this tool or a similar tool like it as showing us how to do it with said tool then not knowing what tool it is kinda defeats purpose of video… wouldn’t you think? Not hating just stating
I bought this tool around 15 years ago from a tool show, there's a similar one on Autodoc, it's not a cheap tool - www.autodoc.co.uk/gedore/13438202
Don’t use copper grease/slip on aluminium it will cause problems

I've had this a very long time, there is a link in the comments below somewhere for a link to a Klann brand! 👍☺️
Where can i buy it?
If you scroll through the messages there's a link to klann tools somewhere which do a similar item
Painful to see!
Drop the whole assembly. Or cut the head of the back bolts.
Air hammer go brrt
Thanks for the update, sadly can't get one in there, 2 brrts and you'll mushroom the head, then it'll never come out. Nice idea though ☺️👍
Horrible, horrible job. I hate doing them as its ALWAYS a drama.
