In this article, we'll explore some simple yet effective tips to help you remove odors from your vacuum and enjoy a cleaner, fresher home environment.
Why does my bagless vacuum smell bad? - Because you are picking up dirt, which has bacteria on it. Bacteria causes odors.
How do I get my vacuum to stop smelling like dog? I don't know about you, but my dogs don't smell like dog, but when their hair sits in the vacuum, the vacuum starts to smell like dog. Same thing as above...bacterial harboring odors that are released after the hair is vacuumed up.
Bagless vacuums can develop unpleasant odors due to the accumulation of dirt, dust, and debris in the canister or filter. These odors can be further intensified if the canister is not regularly emptied or if the filter is not cleaned or replaced as needed. Solution:
Clean or Replace the Filter
One of the most common causes of odor in a vacuum cleaner is a dirty or clogged filter. To tackle this issue, start by checking the manufacturer's instructions to determine if your vacuum's filter is washable or replaceable. If it's washable, remove it and clean it thoroughly using mild soap and water. Allow it to dry completely before reinserting it into the vacuum. If the filter is non-washable, replace it with a new one to ensure optimal performance and odor elimination. You can also use our favorite product: Fred's So Fresh. Empty & Clean the Dust Canister
A full dust canister can contribute to foul odors emanating from your vacuum. Make it a habit to empty the dust canister after each use or when it reaches the recommended fill level. Remove the canister from the vacuum and dispose of the contents in a sealed bag. Rinse the canister with warm water and mild soap or spray it out with Fred's so fresh to remove any residual odors. Allow it to dry completely before reattaching it to the vacuum.
If you have a bagged vacuum, you can use many different products to neutralized the odors in your bag. By using these products consistently, you will avoid odors completely!
Clean the Brush Roll and Beater Bar
Use Odor Absorbing Products to freshen up your vacuum and eliminate odors, consider using odor-absorbing products. Do not use baking soda or carpet fresh! These products will clogg the pores of your vacuum bags and filters causing it to lose suction, and ultimately straining the motor. Many manufacturers will void your warranty if these products are used. Instead, use the products we suggest in THIS VIDEO. Sprinkle a generous amount of any of these products on the floor or carpet, and then vacuum it up. The products are designed to help absorb odors, leaving your vacuum smelling clean and fresh. You can also place an odor-absorbing sachet or a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball inside the vacuum's dust canister or bag for a pleasant scent, but those are not as fun!
Maintain Proper Vacuum Hygiene
Maintaining proper hygiene practices while using your vacuum can prevent odors from developing. Avoid vacuuming wet or damp surfaces, as moisture can promote the growth of mold and mildew, leading to unpleasant smells. Additionally, regularly clean and disinfect the attachments and hoses to prevent the buildup of bacteria and odors. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and maintenance to ensure the longevity of your vacuum and keep it smelling fresh.

I use the Fresh Wave vacuum beads in my bagged clean air vacuums, and it works great. One little tip: Go to your pet store and buy some fish tank filter bags you use to make fish tank filters, put the vacuum beads in, tie it up and put it in the bag chamber, NOT in the bag. Works just as good, and the scent lasts longer that way.
