How To Easily Test Your Battery and Charging System With The Ancel Battery Tester

  • I purchased the Ancel Battery Tester to keep track of the state of health of my batteries. This tester can test 6 and 12 volt batteries as well as do a starting and charging system test. While using this tester I found one of my deep cycle batteries was faulty due to low cold cranking amperage even though the voltage looked good with a volt meter. I would recommend to add this tool to your tool box to help maintain your batteries related to vehicles, extra batteries, lawn tractor, motorcycle et.

    As somebody who bought this tester I can tell you it's extremely accurate, against my Volt metre it was 0.8%. Tested a class 8 tractor today that wouldn't start. This tester detected a bad cell indicating as such with a 10.2 volt reading. Starter and alternator readings are accurate. .Buy with confidence!!

    You're the only one that did charging test correctly upping to 2500 rpm then hit enter . You don't need a helper and you don't need to press enter during the 5 sec of 2500 rpm ramp up.

    I have this tester. When you test the battery the first % and gauge you see is the state of health SOH, which is how close it is to the CCA you selected. To see the state of charge SOC you need to press the down arrow and the % and gauge show you the charge %, you'll also see the arrow on the right point to the voltage now.

    17:13 If you look at the clamps closely, you can see there's actually two isolated contacts in each clamp, which should be clamped to the battery terminals so they touch down independently on opposite ends. If you clip it on with just the tip you won't establish the proper connection for a good measurement.
    One side is used to deliver the load current, and the other is used to make the voltage measurement, in what's called a 4 wire measurement.
    Make sure they're both connected to the same point, not with one contacting the battery post and the other on the battery cable terminal, which could throw off the results.

    8:45 Bingo. If anyone thought these were just fancy volt meters, this proves they are not. The battery was reading 12.84 (fully charged) but the tester indicated very low CCA, which is what the battery needs to power high current devices. A voltmeter says it's good, a conductance tester correctly identifies it as a bad battery. BTW, the cranking time on these and others is wrong. That truck started in less than a second, not 4 plus seconds.

    • @wingerrrrrrrrr
      @wingerrrrrrrrr 2 роки тому

      15:58 It does look like this tester isn't correctly measuring the cranking time. Not sure how it's trying to do it, maybe it started timing from when it saw a voltage drop from opening the door or turning on the ignition rather than the actual cranking start.
      If that's the case it's a rather useless measurement.
      On the Konnwei tester I've got, it shows RPM detected as cranking is started, so it's not using a voltage drop to trigger the timing. measurement.

    • @ohger1
      @ohger1 2 роки тому

      @@wingerrrrrrrrr Agree. If it had to suck at one test, the crank time would be the one! It's not like we can't tell long crank from a short one.. Other than that one glitch, it's a great tool. Hi there. Due to Covid-19 I left my 2010 BMW X3 in the garage for nearly 15 months. The battery is dead according to my neighbor who tried to start the engine. I plan to go back next month. The question is: will jump-cable the battery make it run again as before or will it die again and a replacement is inevitable?
    Also any suggestions of good battery options?

      Hi Nabeel, Sorry to hear your battery died during Covid. You should replace the battery. Most batteries after a full drain do not recover and will lead your stranded. It is always recommended to use OEM parts but the die hard brand batteries tend to last a long time. Hope this helps!

    When doing the Charging Test and it says raise RPM to 2.5k for 5 seconds and press continue. How does the tester know there is a load on the alternator? Because I thought a loaded test would be to turn all accessories on inside the vehicle and then test the voltage. Im curious because I have a similar tester and always thought a loaded test was with all the accessories on.

    • @rcarioca
      @rcarioca 2 роки тому +1

      @@AskTheCarExperts Thanks. Mine reads a very low resistance of 5 milliohms (0.005 ohms). I also read that it is approx .02 ohm.
      Just as a theoretical exrecise :
      But when I do the rough calculation assuming battery open circ. voltage is 12.6 V and min cranking voltage of approx 9 V : for 0.02 ohm resistance , gives a cranking current of (12.6 -9) / 0.02 = 180 A, which is extremely low for a car battery. Using .005 ohm for the internal resistance yields 720 A yields a high approximation but more realistic cranking current.

    • @wingerrrrrrrrr
      @wingerrrrrrrrr 2 роки тому

      These types of testers uses a 3.00V drop basis for determining the CCA measurement. They apply a pulsed load of about 1.5A, and measure the voltage drop that results, then use that to calculate how much current corresponds to a 3.0V drop, and calls it "CCA" (though it's not actually a cold temperature measurement).
      From there, the resistance is simply 3.0 divided by the CCA number, representing the internal resistance of the battery using that 3V threshold.
      You should find that all your measurement results show that relationship between the CCA and resistance numbers.
