  • We are On the Road Again, This time to go check out our newly acquired M-813 Kaiser. I purchased it from Govdeals.com and may have gotten in a little hot water with the wife. Some sort of trouble at least. We checked it over good, installed new batteries. Holy Smokes the old girl started right up and we drove it back to the shop. Hope you enjoyed the video! Thanks for coming along for the ride and thanks for Watching!

    Tapping the break drums I'm old school like back in 1973-4, manual slack adjusters, every truck driver in the yard had a 9/16 wrench an a ballpeen hammer, every morning in the heavy equipment maintenance yard where they parked the trucks you'd hear them hammers tapping on brake drums, the rule was if you heard thunk, the brakes were tight top and bottom; if you heard a thunk- ring cracked break drum, a ring needed tight the slack adjuster. Me I was a welder in the yard. But I still had to know how to adjust the breaks. Am some retired from driving big rigs. 2014 had first rig in shop and the mechanics told me that he had adjusted the right rear brake that was not functioning well I broke out my hammer the brakes set; failed the tap test I went and got the shop foreman drag his butt over to the rig I said I want you to listen to this left front left rear right front thunk thunk thunk right rear ring ring. Said to shop foreman he didn't fix it. He looks me, said I've never seen anybody do that before and I said that's cuz I'm old school son he was in his 40s and I was in my 60s. Younger generation mechanics aren't taught to tap the brake drums because of the auto slack adjusters, and I mean Love's Petro TA most maintenance yards and trucking companies.

      Does this work with regular smaller drums on consumer vehicles?

    • @orangepickel2

      @@trainoflegos Bendix brake corporation created in 1924 using break shoes springs to return same as air brakes a hydraulic cylinder with two opposed Pistons with a bleeder valve and a steel tubing line delivering hydraulic fluid from a master cylinder break reservoir to individual brakes in the system cast steel drums machined inside to be smooth.
      To answer your question in a word: Yes if in the adjusting process when you adjust the wheel for proper minimum clearance you will hear a ringing sound on tapping the brake drum. Please note my family's 1964 Ford falcon station wagon had manual slack adjusters and they were a real pain to get the brakes adjusted properly soon as they would pass the braking test at the inspection station on the island of Guam where I grew up however the 1969 Chevy Nova had Auto slack adjusters they were activated and self-adjusting every time you stepped on the brakes while reversing the vehicle, but you still had to break the brakes down to replace the shoes clean out the cylinders, a because you would get rust contamination under the rubber boots with hydraulic Pistons they're supposed to move back and forth. The rust prevent the pistons from moving outward and the brakes will not function this is something that I learned back when I was 15 years of age and I'm 66 years of age now.
      ABS break systems date back to the 1960s and their basic function is exactly the same today as they did in those years the difference being that the computer modules are microscopic compared to a 12-in by 12-in board stuck in the trunk of your car.
      Commercial trailers that they use with big rigs reference ABS braking system they have abs drums on only one axle ABS drums have teeth v-shaped teeth in the outer portion of the drum there is an electric magnet which literally counts the number of teeth with I rotation of the brake drums if enough braking pressure is applied to stop the drum from turning the magnetic sensor no longer can count the number of teeth when that happens there is a electric solenoid which releases air pressure allowing the wheel to spin and then reapply breaking pressure. This is to prevent your locking up the breaks trust me you hit the brakes hard enough brakes are going to stay locked up and it's quite evident by a number of skid marks on the highways where you can see the skid marks of trailers completely locked up as they were going to the side of the road.

      @@orangepickel2 thanks for sharing this. I’m a little younger than you, but I grew up in a trucking family. When I would go to the yard with my dad, in the morning, I used to hear TING TING TING and thud thud, from the drovers pre-tripping their breaks with a hammer and the tires with basically, a billy club. I miss that, and the sounds of the air starters.

FYI you can get an Army training manual on that truck remember this everything in the military is geared on a 6th grade reading level, not to mean it was for dummies, it’s to keep things simple. Everything you you to know to operate that truck is in a book and readily available!

      @PoppiB 3 роки тому

      While I agree, military training manuals are written at a 3rd to 6th grade level, they were done so to simplify the operation so anyone, no matter the MOS could jump in and do someone else’s job if the need ever came up. It’s also so service members from other branches don’t have to be trained on another branches jargon.

    I have the same 1970 Kaiser Willies. Mine is an old Army truck with 6850 miles that I traded 2 old Triumph Spitfire cars for. Mine is OD green with white stars on the doors. I have driven in 4th of July parades and just cruise all over with it. It's a blast to drive even though it only gets to 50 mph. As an Army Veteran I worked on these when they were new. I'm so glad I was able to get one for my own use. Enjoy yours, they are a lot of fun. Dan.

    You did very well in your purchase! That beast has some modifications that are obvious upgrades to those of us who have owned/restored vehicles of the M-809 series. That doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with what was done. After all, it's your truck. I have never been forgiven for selling our M-813A1 and XM-816 when money was beyond tight. They were great to own, easy to repair and a ball to drive. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I sincerely wish we were still going for Sunday (or any day) drives in our Cummins powered military vehicles.

My wife has threatened me with the same but thank GOD they do not make them 5# glass jars anymore! She has threatened to throw a big sand hammer and a few other things weighing close to the 5# or more over the 36 years we have been together! LOL 😂 Lucky for me she has thought twice about it!

    The M812-M820 were designed by Kaiser Jeep but AM General actually manufactured them as a subcontractor.If it was rebuilt while still in service,it was sent to a Kaiser Jeep facility and then it would be printed on the data plates.These trucks were made during 1969-1982.All of them had the NHC-250 from Cummins with 250 HP/658 TQ which was naturally aspirated (Just means that there's no turbocharger).The later M900/M939 series trucks had the NHC-250's as well until the A2's were debuted with 6CT's.
    They originally had Firestone NDT's which stands for "Non Directional Tire" (39/900×20).The 48/1400×20 Michelins on yours are aftermarket.The 48's were used on the M923A1-M945A1 and then the M923A2-M943A2 but A2's were equipped with CTIS (Command Tire Inflation System).
    Other than that,despite the five ton payload capacity for off roading,you can easily handle twice the weight just driving on the roads.

This and it topping out at 48/50 MPH is the ONLY reason I didn't build a Overland Camper with mine!!. I went with a 1989 International S1800 4x4 instead and happy I did!!. A little faster and TWICE the MPG!!. But for what Casey will use this truck for, This truck is way better than my International!!.

Of course in those days they didn't have super singles on all the wheels but they had a set up where you could put an adapter on the front wheels, put dually's on them and a track set up for deep mud or snow. Used that set up at Adak, Alaska. Nice rig. (The track set up was track for front wheels and a separate track for the rear, that track fit over both real duals.)

    On the passenger side base of the windshield under the hood is the heater intake so check n see if the valve is closed the stuff a towel in it to stop the heat from blowing in it.

    Love the truck; I've got an M35A2 Deuce and a Half and while yours is bigger there are many similarities. X2 on split shifting the transfer case. Now I get the water tank LOL. Good luck with it.

      @Slim_Slid 3 роки тому

      Although there never was a M812-M820 with a water tank originally,they actually had deuces with water tanks on them.The M49A2 was a fuel tanker and the M50A2 was a water tanker/fire truck.All of them have the same wheelbase as the M35A2.And then there even was a M50A3.

    Add a stock rack, those mules will jump right in.
    If you don't already know, get you a glad hand, hook a air hose to it for your on board air. Someone else mention the shut off valve for the heat.
    Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do with it. Wrecker body or roll back maybe dump??? Of course you can pull the axles and put a 5th wheel trailer in the back. Sooo many options.

    Find the propane guys 1 mile south of the casino in Temecula CA....they have a totally restored duece and a half with a boom on it...they wanted to use it to set propane tanks...but with the interstates and hills it went too slow. It has literally just sat restored, not driven in perfect climate for awhile...min 5+ years.. One look at it and you'll want it, great job done on the restoration...same color as this one in the video too.

      @@CaseysOffRoadRecovery Grew up with an M274A1 and M274A5. Old military vehicles are fun... especially in ORV areas. In Uwharrie National Forrest I spent more time with people looking them over than riding...which was OK.
      I've been looking for an M715 to be my period correct hauler for them.
