The windshield folds down so that in combat a bullet will not shatter the windshield and spray you with glass, or at best obscure your vision at a crucial moment (which there are a lot of when you're under fire). Before you drive into the river, replace that air line that pressurizes the rear axle/differential - a cooling axle (when you're in cool water) will suck water in those little breathers, and your axle lube will be contaminated and diluted with river water. Expensive repair! Fun truck!
You have an amazing mechanical aptitude and you explain this rig with precise detail. In my case I'll have to either watch this video a dozen times or look up a video in addition to your video. My hats off to you .
Same exact repairs on my 5 ton. I bought mine on auction site unseen for 1,850 total with taxes. Came to pick it up at Fort Riley Kansas. I can't believe how nice it was. Thanks military. Mint m-923 with brand new tires and it looked like nobody drove it. Handle fix and 3 air leaks. I got lucky. This is a fantastic production Chris. The benefits of compressing the full experience into a longform story are miles above the standard "watch a guy fix something". Those can be great videos but I get much more when you can understand the whole story.
Thanks! I was thinking on trying to keep everything into one video for this truck, but I end up with hours and hours of footage and it gets overwhelming. Keeping it in segments is much more overwhelming. Plus a lot of people probably don't care about the purchase details and operations of this truck. Most people probably just want to see getting her stuck in breaking some stuff! Lol. I appreciate your feedback
I remember about 35yrs ago our Township used to have auctions and at that time there were 4 big military trucks (Dual rear axles) and School buses, no one wanted them and everyone sold for under $10 each, most drove them right out of the auction, some of the school buses sold for a dollar lol. No scrap guys back then around here. Now I see they sell for quite a bit.
My guess is when they bobbed the truck they used the intermediate axle not the rear. You lost the locker when they removed the rear axle. In my experience the military didn't put locker in the intermediate axles because two rear axles with locker would negate the front tires ability to turn the truck on any surface other than dry blacktop.
The fuel shut off is electrical and when it fails it fails to off. The reason you have a hand throttle shut off is that on top of the fuel shut off valve there is a thumb screw that you can turn in to start the engine if the fuel shut off fails. Then use the hand fuel shut off to kill the engine make sure you leave the switches on as you do that.
Now there is a daily driver! If some clown is looking at his phone and rear ends you at a stop light…if you notice…not good for them. That’s what was great about my 72 Olds 88!
Spent many many hours and miles in a 5 ton. Army 13B towed howitzer . One quick story- we were on the high line in Montana and jumped the truck and the M198 howitzer over a dead deer on the road at 55 mph
I always empty my tanks after a day’s drive to prevent moisture in tanks. Also that blue “brake” button you push is not for parking brakes. It is an emergency air for combat escape when you are low on air and need to override the service brake.
Spring brake,* not service brake, but yeah, the handbrake lever controls both the cable operated parking brake and spring emergency brakes while the green spring brake emergency override is pulled out to the normal position.
New to your channel. Just watched the Trashliner vid now this one. This puppy would pull that Trashliner like it wasn’t even there. Oh wait, most of it isn’ there LOL!
That motor sound s like a 220 Cummins I heard that's the motor they put i. These trucks real nice military truck 🚛 thanks for the upload and look forward to some more uploads have a nice weekend and take care.
To stop the run away diesel (usually will consume itself, it burns the engine oil) just spray a CO2 fire extinguisher in the intake and you can quickly take away one of the three elements that is required for fire and stop the run away. That’s a awesome truck, I hope to own one myself some day.
PAC positive air cut off. It's a spring loaded steel disk for the intake pipe... If your scared look into it. But I have never heard of a diesel engine just running off without some other serious issues like missing piston rings or a turbo seal failure. Neither of which you will get if maintenance has been done regularly and rebuilding at the appropriate intervuls
The now old Detroit two stroke diesel engines had a drop-down flap/valve on top of the blower, it was part of the intake horn. Making something similar for your truck would be a good idea.
I should have known that you are acquainted with Andrew C. You and his friend Jesse all seem to have the same kind of mentality and zest for life. I'm glad that UA-cam brought me here.

you may already know, but the brake button is not a parking brake but a brake over ride. In the event that there was a sudden loss of air pressure, pressing that is supposed to release the spring brakes inorder to get to safety. the hand brake between the seats is the parking brake. Atleast that is the way they were when the Army version came out in 1988 ish when I was in. the button used to be black an would say on it not for parking. and spring brake over ride.
Back in the 2000 we would pack a clipboard around when we would cold start the yeard. If one ran on us we would pull the cap off of the top of the intake and put the clipboard over the intake.
The spare tire will come down easily, but good luck getting it back up. That's a workout you'll never forget. Bonus points if you do it middle of night in cold rain where the "road" is a mud field. There's nothing worse than doing tire repair on the field.
I want one so bad, nice truck. I have a friend who has one and he injects propane into the intake when on the highway and he has increased his mpg to almost 16mpg from the 6 he was getting. He also has been tinkering with a browns gas or HHO asperated into the system as well and it seems to also increase his mpg and doesn't have the heating issue he gets with the propane. the motor runs warmer not much more . anyway have a wonderful day Semper Fi
Thanks. And you should snag one! Definitely a fun truck to mess around with. Interesting about the propane. I was surprised how good of fuel consumption this one got on the way home. I'll have to do some more trips to confirm though
I've never used the emergency shut off, turn the run/stop off, then the battery after it stops. Do it in that order or it can make the generator over volt and cause havoc. Battery switch first on, last off
So cool! Reminds me of the old '44 Dodge Army Ambulance (like on MASH) I had in the early 70s. Kind of speed limited but 4x4 and great granny range. Only one date refused to ride in it. Yup, she was done on the spot.
I dont know if anyone has mentioned this yet but for runaway protection the intake flapper is a great option but can be expensive and may not be viable for going underwater if you wanna do that but another option is a co2 fire extinguisher. You just shoot it down the intake or snorkel in your case and hope it dies. Not a sure fire method but knowing the chance of that engine running away is very slim and you need a fire extinguisher anyway I’d rely on it.
Pretty decent truck under the PIP Program. Cummins engine and Allison transmission were were good. The only bad thing was that the transfer case could not handle the torque in low range reverse. The transfer case would crack. The initial fuel tank venting system was connected to the MT654 transmission vent and sometimes diesel fuel would get into transmission, but that problem was corrected with an field fix.
The reason why the green valve doesn't apply the brakes while pulling the parking brake lever is because the green knob is for emergency use only. The handbrake lever controls both the cable operated parking brake and spring emergency brakes. The green knob uses an emergency supply of air to release the spring brakes in the event your air pressure is very low or out completely and you need to move your truck out of a dangerous situation. Many buses have a green emergency override knob as well, but the difference is you have to continuously hold the green button down on buses that have them whereas with this truck, you push in for emergency and pull for normal.
I have an old Bedford RL, it’s a former British military do almost anything lorry and built solid walls and a roof with a bed and table and for cooking and heating I managed through a lot of trial and error to fit stove too. Yes it looks awful but it should come as no surprise to you that when rvs get stuck or they brake down they mostly come to ask for my help with their tails between their legs but apart from all that it’s nice set of wheels there
I think by putting the bag over the air intake, cutting off the air supply caused the engine to try and drawl more fuel. It's a old trick I was taught long time ago. It helps unclog a clogged fuel filter
I have driven both that model and the older M35A2 deuce when I was in the Army. That one is in excellent shape. We used to try to tear them a new one out in the field. Both models are a blast drive in the field.
Back in my days when I was in the military Drive in those trucks at the end of the day when we parked and we had to drain the air tanks due to condensation and water
Another good vid. Keep a CO2 fire extinguisher handy in the truck. If it becomes a runaway shoot the CO2 into the air intake. (Of course, this is the internet, so do your own research LOL)
Put an aluminum blast gate for a dust collection system into the intake system. You can even rig it to a linear actuator so u can flip a switch to have the battery close it off.
Runaway diesels are not a big issue, it is rare. If you are worried, carry a big c02 fire extinguisher and use that to smother the engine from lack of oxygen.
That first shot over water looked like the Susquehanna Dam crossing from Port Deposit (Cecil County) to Harford County Maryland traveling southbound on US Route 1.

I put a 3in ball valve inline on my intake on a Detroit I have you would have to be quick to shut it of but it works. If your to slow getting to it might be better letting it go.
Runaway diesel engines are super scary! I had a MEP 806 generator runaway on me when I was on a deployment in Korea. Thank god I had a metal clipboard to block the air intake because I've heard stories of people getting killed.
That's a Marine Corps m923, it would came with lockers, but they go for big money, alot people pull them and sell them. It has what's left of the "paperclip" u shaped welded on front bumper. You can turn the combat adjustment on the injection pump shut off valve, if ever have runaway diesel, just unplug the wire going to the solenoid on the infection pump. I have a m925 Marine Corps 6x6 5 ton, still has the lockers and all the under coating, but never got the abs upgrade.
I like watching your videos because you don't act silly and joke a lot like some channels (donut media or whistlindiesel for example). And you have a good voice so I just turn on one of your videos and play it in the background while web browsing.
Darn, convince him to let you revive it! I like the deuces so much more because they are manual transmission. But the five ton is so much more badass looking
That MPG is not bad....my U1300L Unimog 5.6Litre diesel gives a consistent 19 MPG laden or unladen...... I used to run a small trucking company, 24 ton 3 axle and 30 ton 4 axle trucks and was getting around 9 MPG from the 3 axles and 10 MPG from the 4 axle trucks. (remember these are Imperial MPG and laden trucks (an unladen truck earns 0 nothing).. Your chassis cab and bed come in around 9 tons...my Unimog is only just over 5 tons.
@@ParadigmUnkn0wn Very true on the old style rims, but the ones he has just bolt together with an o-ring between the two halves which is the usual cause if the slow air leak.

When I was a kid in the UK. LONDON Wandsworth bus station .1974 the bus garage had a giant Car park area . And they had literally 30 or 40 old ww2 vehicles ( in fact if you come to London and do the Big Yellow Duck rides ) which are.American DUKW . There are the same ones painted yellow “ anyways as a kid i clambered over these ww2 spare vehicles. Including a German half track the big open topped one that Towed the 88mil anti tank gun and the 155. Open topped. I crept around Trying the Gears they looked crazy complicated to drive . Also there were Various DKUW. Oops you know wat I mean. And Lots of AUSTIN champs ( with 4cylinder gold rolls Royce engines all up for scrap ) what a shame this GARAGE ARCHIVE was listed as scrap. In those days they literally were listed as scrap metal. Now all we Have is SCRAP.
Whether it looks like it or not....these military trucks are very advanced. They can give some high-end cars a run for their money in the complexity department.
10k for that is not bad considering already bobbed and no leaks…..oil. Lol. Plenty of parts available. There are groups of fellas in Florida who trail and Ford these up to 6ft of water. Lol. These trucks are better than the Ltv in engineering and build. A good friend from my church was a inspector and test for the LTV fleets of steward Stevenson. He claimed the BMY, Harcourt and the newest Oshkosh makes are far better vehicles. Nice content from Ceciltuckey MD👊🏼
I cut a finger off a thick rubber glove and grabbed a stainless clamp and fixed a scorching hot copper heat pipe in a mansion that had a hardwood floor nail driven into it and it decided to rust out and leak on Super Bowl Sunday night and it held and got the customer thru the night!!!

Run away diesel was more common for the old Detroit diesels
That's a Marine Corps m923, it would came with lockers, but they go for big money, alot people pull them and sell them. It has what's left of the "paperclip" u shaped welded on front bumper. You can turn the combat adjustment on the injection pump shut off valve, if ever have runaway diesel, just unplug the wire going to the solenoid on the infection pump. I have a m925 Marine Corps 6x6 5 ton, still has the lockers and all the under coating, but never got the abs upgrade.
Love the truck definitely agree a run away seems very scary!! Awesome buy!!
Badass truck I've been looking for one hard to find one in that good of shape
I like watching your videos because you don't act silly and joke a lot like some channels (donut media or whistlindiesel for example). And you have a good voice so I just turn on one of your videos and play it in the background while web browsing.
Wow! As a Veteran I have been in alot of equipment. But I don't remember any 5 tons.
My 5 ton is a manual 5spd with a two spd rear ! ❤❤
'71 jeep kaiser. Last depot update 2009.
6,000 miles on it !
The 'rattle-can' paint job right after a major re-con would have me a bit concerned.Good such with the 5T.
For your air leak check your valve stem that is usually what gets hit when changing tires and see if that does it.
I used to work on these truck, fun fun

I’m totally jealous! My buddy’s dad has had a Deuce rotting away in a leaky garage for almost 20 years, and he still won’t sell it to me dangit!
Darn, convince him to let you revive it! I like the deuces so much more because they are manual transmission. But the five ton is so much more badass looking
It’s probably too far gone now for an idiot carpenter to revive it anyway LOL
That truck looks in great condition!
My new favorite channel
Dude. Awesome video. I learned some stuff about mine and I've had it for months.
Nice audio! The sound is sweeeeeeeet!!!
The air leak on those super single tires is usually from the o-ring on the split rim.
Thanks. Another guy mentioned the same thing. I'll have to look into it
Split rims, especially ones that large, are truly terrifying widowmakers.
@@ParadigmUnkn0wn Very true on the old style rims, but the ones he has just bolt together with an o-ring between the two halves which is the usual cause if the slow air leak.
those lights you think are painted over on the gauge cluster are actually lights to light up the gauges at night. They don't have backlights so that's why they look painted
I too always wanted a duce and 1/2. What a great truck
The 5 ton is just too big.
I cut a finger off a thick rubber glove and grabbed a stainless clamp and fixed a scorching hot copper heat pipe in a mansion that had a hardwood floor nail driven into it and it decided to rust out and leak on Super Bowl Sunday night and it held and got the customer thru the night!!!
primary air should be brakes ONLY
secondary air is anything else that needs air to function
nice truck
