Thank y’all so much! This version definitely seems like a big departure from the previous editions, but we worked hard to make it *feel* like the zoom-and-boom we remember playing back then, but with the bookkeeping and math hidden away. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Wow. I'm honestly quite suprised (almost shocked) at how you felt that original Car Wars had a lot of math and accounting. My friends and I never felt that way. And, designing the cars/trucks/motorcycles/etc was half the fun of the game.
Absolutely! Designing the cars was a big part of the fun!
Ugh, Car Wars in name only. We loved the original game, $6 out of the box and easy to play. This is.... something.
When I see proprietary dice, cards and control panels I check out, mentally!
@@kellydavis3108 Yup, proprietary dice are an instant no go for me too.
Totally agree I much prefer the classic pocket box Car Wars it was a superb game. Not fond of the oversized new edition of Car Wars with its custom dice, comes across gimmicky
You played the OG!? Heard it was an awesome game!
@@nicholasyost8400 Yes, purchased originally when it came in a plastic cover.
One of the FUNNEST aspects of the game was building your own car, which this system nerfs horrendously.
One small thing. The Range key work is X=1 car length, not turning key. The turning key is 2 car lengths long. So a flamethrower only has a range of 1 turning key as it's range is 2. Page 7 & 8 of the rulebook.
Back in the day I loved Car Wars. We made it RPG-like by roleplaying the ways that each badass car combats occurred. It's fun to see a play of it all this time later.
We did that too! We got one of those real full sized USA Road maps and did like a 'Death Race 2000' game. lol
Surprised by all the hate for this in the comments! I grew up playing OG pocketbox Car Wars, up through the Dueltrack expansion and into the Deluxe Car Wars set. It was my “D&D” as no one in my social circle wanted to play D&D but enjoyed vehicular combat (my friends were more Road Warrior than Lord of the Rings fans). I can freely admit even now that it was a graphing spreadsheet calculus slog for a lot of the time. It didn’t bother us though because we were kids and had plenty of time to devote to playing a game. I got the Kickstarter Double Ace edition of sixth edition precisely because it was a streamlined and simplified system. I enjoy Star Trek Attack Wing and Star Wars X Wing and even the Wizkids clix based Crimson Skies from like 20 years ago. I don’t want to have to consult charts and tables to decide how much a skid moves me. I am adult with limited time and just want to have some fast paced car fights. I will also add; my wife enjoys this game a lot, but when I showed her OG Car Wars, she was absolutely not interested. I admit the car building of OG CW was a blast and this is lacking that somewhat, but it more than makes up for it in the pacing and the smooth play. Games are supposed to be fun. I do enough spreadsheets and charts and tables in my mundane real life.😆🤣
Fun to watch and brings back memories... car wars and call of cthulla was the games i played in the 80`s, I was born in 68... I had "Boat wars"... and just googled it "Autoduel champions" which added helicopters and superheroes to car wars...! Heres a story for you... I played "midville" on the wall... all the counters had bluetac on them... cars, bikes, people, hate to think how long it took....
Midville! I was trying to remember that name. We once played a convention game using all four maps, one team per corner. Total madness!
I still have my 2. edition Car Wars set up on the attic. Loved the game back in the day. Today, I'm more leaning towards Gaslands.
I ran into Greg at the KW Wargaming Guild open house this past weekend and he gave be a tip on the lets play of 6th edition. Managed to score a set after watching, seeing it played is a big help
The original pocket version was one of my favourite games as a kid. I enjoyed the maths 🤓. Saving up for the deluxe edition was a big thing for me. I had to mail order it. Deluxe meant more paper tokens to photocopy! Loved it. Having said that, I think Gaslands 2 has replaced it as a better game. Quick, intuitive and pure metal mayhem. Anyway, can you have too many games? Thanks for sharing this. ❤
My only experience with CW was at 1986 or 87 Gencon. It was a highway chase scenario. I failed a driving check, skidded out, lost my tires, and got left behind in the first 15 minutes of the event!
"But did you die?" 😆
Although GW's "Battle Cars" lacked the atmosphere of old skool "Car Wars"; I did like "Battle Cars" map, covered in triangles to work out movement.
Smuggling Car Wars across the Canadian boarder sounds like a scenario for the game itself.
This was great! I haven't seen much less played Carwars in years! Lotta fun!
I use to love playing this many many years ago, it was 1st called Dark Future and it was on a highway.
over 30 year ago for me :)
Dark Future was a GW big box release, CW was an earlier game from SJG. Both awesome.
Car Wars predates Dark Future by 8 years!
Initially, I was not too fond of the coloured acrylic bases, but now that I’ve played and seen you guys play, I think they are ingenious. This is now my favourite edition of Car Wars. I would love to watch a Car Wars campaign, Ash!
I was huge into Car Wars back in the day, to the point where I could build a car from memory.
I think I still have almost all the Uncle Als and Autoduel magazines in a box somewhere, both digest sized and full sized
This thing is like Gaslands Goes To Hollywood... all proprietary glitz, stolen mechanics, a bloated price tag, and no heart
Ah sweet Car Wars. The FASA era was definitely went hard into the simulationist side of things. Apparently NASCAR fans would strip out the weapon rules from OG Car Wars and use it and the turn gauges to simulate races.
Car. Car never changes…
I remember getting the original 40 years ago - they came in these little plastic cases.
My family had Car Wars when I was a kid. Was really fun and you could play it kinda like an RPG.
This feels more like a mix of X-Wing and Gaslands and nothing at all like the Car Wars of old. I'm not against streamlining and rejuvenating old games, but here, somehow, the spirit of the game got lost in design.
Agreed. I like the minis but "taking the math" out of the game takes the spirit out of it too. It's not the same and the dice overcomplicate what is supposed to be a simplified math scheme: d6 for everything.
It’s funny because I have the original pocket game and when I was a kid my dad played with me and I think I was just a little too young at the time to grasp it. But he created our car sheets and I still have them. I enjoyed just playing with the pieces. However when I watched this game being played I was very attracted to it. I tried gaslands years ago and honestly I didn’t like it at all. It just didn’t appeal to me at all, I really could care less about customizing toy cars. Where this game has a ton of amazing vehicles ready to play and customize with the cards. Perhaps it’s because I was a big twisted metal fan and this had that same feeling. I like how the vehicles have a themed name and various builds. It’s easy to get into and I love that it’s one turn key and not a whole bunch of keys like gas lands. I didn’t like how gas lands has a bunch of dice and turn keys that you needed to print out or buy separately from a third party….. this game feels more complete and more action packed to just jump in and play. My 14 year old son also enjoys it a lot. I also love the dashboard. The game just feels and plays really well and makes a lot of sense when played. I’m not knocking gas lands but to me it’s just not my thing, where Car Wars is exactly the game I was originally looking for.
Ash, "Carwars... journaling game." 😄😄😄
I so wanted to love this. I played in the 80's when I was a kid but this isn't the same game or even close to the same game
Ash and $18 and company thanks for playing the game and putting out this video. I wonder if your guest also had the car wars /champions crossover?
Give me a stack of Uncle Alberts catalogs, and a mechanical pencil.
I loved the original Car Wars. I think its spiritual successor is Gaslands, not this.
Still have my O.G. car wars in the slim case.
If a game needs more time accounting than playing, there will only ever be a small fan base.
my brother and i play the new edition occasionally its fun :) kickstarted it all
So great seeing this on the table. Loved the original. This one looks fun. I’ve been debating getting it and I think I will pick up a starter. I will probably pick up the reprint old one too heh. Love me some cardboard.
I love OG Car Wars, but this is version is at least as much fun, as deep, and far easier to teach.
Looks like good fast fun. Thanks for sharing.
Division 30 was best; just enough to have a ton of options but not too much for really overpowered stuff (unless your opponent did rule-ambiguity stuff). One of our groups better designs was the VOID (Vehicle of Incredible Destruction); minibus with turreted AT gun, mag switch with APFSDC and HEAT rounds, targeting computer. Not a ton of armor but it was metal, along with a metal ram plate. Standard power plant, tires and chassis.
Surprised most folks because I can shoot on the top of other vehicles (I hear that "well I don't have a turret" again, but doesn't matter) and ramming someone was pretty spectacular (especially head-on rams at combined 60+MPH...managed to "confetti" a couple cars) and you can steamroller small vehicles (cycles and subcompacts IIRC). Did 200 damage to one car but he was a race car with a carbon fiber frame and high speed head on rams with a metal ram place and the weight multiplier made things really nasty).
My brother did a van design (vans just sucked because they didn't have a ton of space and the chassis was really heavy) than had four MGs with incendiary ammo...he's light stuff on fire if he his with three or more and had a corner mount...thought it had five but can't recall.
I defo prefer the skill drivong of Gaslands honestly but still great work on the video
Thanks Ash! Great show of the 6th edition. Car Wars made me a math teacher. PS - This version is Car Wars in name only though 😢
I really miss the old opening music :(
Cool video though!
GRUPS is also a Steve Jackson game, just an RPG rather than a board or card game.
Not my kind of game, but interesting to watch. Well made vid as always!
Great video as always.
This looks super fun!
How would you judge CarWars and GasLands side by side? Would you play one over the other any day or is it apples and oranges ?
I like this new version!
I still have the rules from the 80s in German. To say it was a clunky game is an understatement. Simply reading the rules won´t help for a better understanding. Instead you had to study them in order to be confident about what you were doing on the asphalt. Honestly I never played the vintage version as using the coloured 2D paper cutouts was very uninspiring to say the least though the vehicle designs depicted were gorgeous. Such a shame SJG was too much of a miser and didn´t produce those models in 3D plastic.
I still have lots of GURPS rpg books and of them is GURPS Car Wars Autoduel. Great source material and it adds much more to the setting than all the oil has gone the way of the dodo.
Ahhh i am sorry i missed the kickstarter. Pretty cool
Holly Gaslands it is Car Wars!
Interesting... Very different to Gaslands!
Honestly as a huge Gaslands fan I might have to check this out!
You’ll love it.
Loved the Original upto 3rd ed Have it all but I changed to Gaslands ;)
Ugh. As a long time "classic" CW player this game seems way to fiddly and I really don't like proprietary dice. While creating cars in the old game might be a chore, the gameplay was still simple. Use the 3 phase turn rules and keep the option list limited and it is a great game!
I think you underestimate just how much complexity you internalised. With HC tracking and half a dozen lookups and targeting math, the people I mostly play with could NEVER play OG without me running it. This, they picked up instantly. No pencils required, no table lookups, everything right on the table.
Are these car models available seperately? If so: from where? And how do they scale to Hot Wheels and the likes - looking for Gaslands use here!
They are 1/64 scale so could use these for GL or use your GL cars in CW. They do sell expansions with more minis but they include build cards. No minis sold completely separate.
To add to that though, buy their CARnage STL pack which includes all the minis for sale, and more. If you have a 3D resin printer, it’s worth checking out.
Why has the amount of your stuff disappeared? I noticed its no longer daily. I assume it's battling against burn out? No shade, just genuinely interested
I completely rebuilt the studio and haven’t been having outside guests in to make content for the last six months. Also, some Content is now patrons only!
@@GuerrillaMiniatureGames The GMG Patreon Members Only After Dark content is surprisingly spicy.
@@euansmith3699 I would rate it 25/25
aww, if it does not take 4 hours to do 12 seconds of game time, is it really car wars :) failing a bootleg turn, and then flipping and rolling your car for effectively half the game was all part of original car wars.
😎👍
Looks ok but basic movement is waaaaay too fiddly. Fun watch, no way would I play.
Too complicated for me not for me.
