    Classic Car Wars all the way for me but then it was my first table top/rpg game so it holds a special place. I can appreciate v6 and I think will help people discover and get into car wars, so thats great.

      I wish they made new solid counters for the fire slicks in the reprinted Car Wars Arena Book like in the pocket boxes. Don't know why they didn't.

    I started Car Wars in '85 when I bought the original black plastic 'retail rack hanger box'. Didn't take me and my friends long to get fully hooked. I ended up with all of the expansions and modules, like Aeroduel and Boat Wars, and a lot of the Autoduel Quarterly books. I even had the full map of Midville. 🥰
    I had the original arena set and always wanted to make a fully 3d model of the multi-layer one with the ramps and the full lap running around the top tier.
    Watching this video and I'm like "Yup, that's the Chopper Challenge and Off-Road Duelling that I had". If I'm remembering correctly, Off-Road Duelling included 'Muskogee Mayhem' an off-road race track/arena?
    Anyone else remember the Hive Queen Big Rig with all her drones?

      @@CastleArchon This was over many years, so it wasn't too hard adding them in to our regular play as and when I got them. Bikes, trikes, big rigs, off-road, etc were all a breeze to add in. We rarely used the planes but the boats and choppers were a lot of fun. I even had some of the metal miniatures 😎👍

    I ended up playing a crap ton of Battletech back in the day before learning about Car Wars. For a quick jump into the game just for the combat, 6th edition was quick and easy to understand with minimal amount of math, especially with the dashboard. Been loving the new game set.
    And it's really been helpful with working out the combat scenes for the fiction series that we're creating.

    • @CastleArchon

      I'll agree with you about jumping into combat and if you like that I'll also suggest Federation Commander (the streamlined version of SFB) .
      But. Car Wars is not a combat game (despite repeated SJG marketing attempts) so much as an "engineering game." And Battletech and Federation Commander aren't.

    The original pocket edition of car wars cost $5, played easily on the kitchen table. The sixth edition cost $149. Decision made.

    • @CastleArchon
      @CastleArchon  Рік тому

      It certainly is not a small investment. But you can get deep into the classic too. Probably $100 or so if you get the classic pocket boxes. They have like 4 of them. (Some have more "must have" items than others)

    • @michelle00d00
      @michelle00d00 Рік тому

      With the pocket box you can make cycles to vans. 25$ spent on classic does more than 6th then you add in the extras for 6th and the extras for classic $10 compared to $60 you are right it is easy to get into about a $1000 bucks in classic but that is near everything printed oop and new. Now 6e will get super pricey if you want it all and all the new stuff they come out with won't be cheap.

    I was playing Car Wars out of a zip lock bag my buddy got in the late 80's. He later moved on to Death track, but there is a charm to Car Wars, such a small package, such a huge game. Recently I got the bug and purchased Car Wars Classic and talk about a relearning curve! Got some chums interested, a couple for the "old school nostalgia" bit. Low cost to start, low cost to continue to expand, and what expansions are available! They are massive.
    Car Wars Classic for the win.

    Great video as always, I really appreciate the comparison between classic and new Car Wars. Not sure I agreed with you completely about glitzy games being responsible for new growth. The video game world is littered with glitzy failures, the following quote from a giant in game design sums up my opinion. "People can assume that a game is going to be fun and what it needs for success are more cinematics or monetisation or whatever - but if the core just is not there with good gameplay, then it won't work," -Sid Meier. Form must follow function!
    PS Wait, what, you actually want us to take the game out of the box and play it? But, but, the cars will get smudges.

    • @CastleArchon
      @CastleArchon  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Well, non-glitzy games are sure a tough sell. Anyone doing them is a labor of love. I do agree there is a lot of fluff out there that finds itself in the waste bin.

    I have the Car*Wars Compendium 2E Box Set from when it was released. It came with everything, like you said, including a 'free' random supplement. I got lucky, it was 'Car*Wars Tanks'! I thought about 6E, but I like the nuance of vehicle creation better for 2E and easier to port over to my Hero Games with my Autoduel Champions book. My final thought is on miniatures and scale. Yes, Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars are usually 1 to 2 bucks a pop for 6E, but MicroMachines, though out of production, still fairly easy to find and modify with a little glue gun and action figure weapons. Worst case, you can find knock off MicroMachines at any Dollar Store/Tree.

    Nice breakdown! I'll toss a shout-out to 5th Edition. For rules, that was an excellent version, streamlining and speeding up gameplay but still sticking with the feel of classic. Its problems were entirely in how they sold the game (having to buy a bunch of collectable books that were mostly the same thing, no design system, etc...) most of which you can remedy now thanks to fans. And with them all in .pdf you can get the whole series and a pack of Hot Wheels for about $30.

    • @CastleArchon
      @CastleArchon  2 роки тому +1

      I do remember that! Yeah, there a few companies that tried to make collectable versions of their games to get in on the CCG profit bandwagon. Most failed in the attempt. Those that did could have done better if they had sold the game with normal expansions.

    Really cool. Some smarty might be able to come up with a Alleviator for the scale issue by making a companion app for the dashboards. A lot of companies are making apps to track things for their games already, even smaller projects, and there is always the chance some fan does it to save space.

    Another great video. 6e, it's not for me. Instead, I purchased GMT's Apocalypse Road. No dice just cards for activation. Each player controls a team of cars which means you are not out of the game after loose your one car. It's easy to understand and to teach to novices. Lots of mayhem for about 2 hours of playtime. Down side, a lot less simulationist. Cars are prebuilt. No construction rules.

    Old version allows more car customisation, lots of cars in play, a bigger play area as the cars are smaller, it's cheaper and you use your brain more. New one is a x wing rip off that just doesn't cater to lots of players, large city fights, and using your brain.

    Between 2015 and 2018 I attended local cons in preparation for the 6e with a guy who "circus maximus" the old basic game with matchbox cars and laminated designs he had made in years past as a referee. It, unknown to me, was to prepare me to write professionally for the game. Eh, I prefer the old basic classic game without Boat Wars, without Aeroduel, and so forth. The old game allowed precocious of all ages use their engineering skills and physics education to game and game out the game. I don't dislike nor disapprove of the 6th Edition, but I had a lot of time, money and just sheer emotion invested in the old game for a lot or reasons. I shrug my shoulders at gaming now for a lot of other reasons, but, even though I no longer game, much less play Car Wars anymore, I hope that the trend of dumbing down the actual game as seen in other games, and placating to boy's and young men's desire to "feel more powerful" as a marketing strategy, does not take hold of Steve Jackson's creations. If it does, as per "feats" in D&D, then oh well. In the forty years I had the game I had a lot of fond memories of it that I intended to turn into a sideline profession. That's over with, and I no longer want that, but I hope the tradition of the game remains as it was intended, and that big good looking play pieces and maps don't detract from its origins.

I modded though I do all movement in phase turns taken by players as per rules but in the first phases like 20mph is 2 inches so phase 1 & 2 are movements.. 30mph phase 1 2 & 3, 100mph is 2 inches per phase.. 105mph is 2 1/2 1st phase then 2 the last four and so on.

    I mean they're gonna do what they got to do to sell games and it sucks that people think dumb, simple games are better. Me, I'm not going to play a game I'm not going to have fun playing and to me removing the detail that let me make play by play decisions to make the game play "faster" isn't fun. If I have to rush through a game, is it even fun at that point?
    Now don't get me wrong, I am for streamlining. There's nothing wrong with cutting off of the unneeded fat. You should strive for the simplest rules that do the job without removing detail. And this is something I feel modern games get wrong. They don't just skim the fat, they cut down to the bone, removing the tasty bits to give you a leaner but less satiating meal.
