I agree with you 100%. Most people that ride (in my personal experience) jump from these smaller bikes to "faster/bigger" bikes wayyy too soon. I cant tell you the amount of people I meet on beautiful and expensive 600cc - 1000cc bikes, that cant "ride" the things to save their lives. Regardless of how "slow" these beginner bikes will start to feel after you have them for a while, there is no limit to the things you can really learn on them, while also being on a machine that will forgive your mistakes (because you will make them) and wont hurt your wallet so much when you inevitably lay it down. Great video keep up the good work.
Finally I am the same logic as you, and I never drove one.. My cbr500 is coming soon.. So many comments that you can start on a SS bike.. Like for sure, you can, if you don't use the throttle as much and yada yada.. If you are scared to open the throttle then maybe you are driving above your limit. I wouldn't wanna touch a R6 as my first bike.. I'll learn on this and give it to my brother or sell it ..

Thank you sooooo much for this video. I just got my motorcycle 🏍 license last week. I am SOOOOOOOO new to riding a motorcycle 🏍 . I took the MSF ecourse and passed. That was my very 1st time I ever rode a motorcycle 🏍. It was amazing and I passed the test. I have so much more to learn. Even though I passed I am still going to get more lessons UNTIL I'm ready to purchase. I live in NYC and won't be driving very fast out here. My eye is on the cbr300. But experience is what will help anyone out here. Thank you again for thei video. You confirmed everything I felt about buying a motorcycle. I most definitely am not into competition with anyone. I will buy the bike that suits me.
Bought a CBR500R as my first bike. I have had it for over 4 years now (used 2013 model) and still don't feel a need to upgrade. It is honestly perfect. It is cheap and reliable. It is fast enough to have some fun but at the same time very forgiving. You won't be doing any accidental wheelies on this bike.
Dude the way you explained it. it’s great 👍 I do believe that my first bike it’s going to be a Honda 500 rr . Thanks a lot for you video and everything you said as a beginner or future beginners all’s you said helps A LOT !!
I've almost had my cbr500r for a month & with it being my first bike , I don't think would have picked any other bike over it. I have a red one and with the LED lights I figured less people would pull out or blow stop signs on me but that's false. Regardless. Still loving every minute of it.

I have the 2019 cb500f “I prefer upright naked bikes” but it’s virtually the same bike. I loooove this bike. It my first bike so I don’t have much comparison but it’s everything I wanted to start with and it’s just up my ally as a new rider. It’s noob friendly but still fast enough even with my big ass on it “ 6’5” 225 lbs” this is a great first bike if your an older or bigger new rider. So happy I went with this over the cb300. And although it’s heavier than other bikes in its class, it’s waaay more comfortable for me, Especially as a tall rider. Just feels roomy
The honda cbr500r is gonna be my first bike. I have a full license but i like to take it easy. The cbr500 got the looks and its good enough for the highway.
Same with me. I was about to get ninja 400, cheaper and a bit faster and agile but there is no new bikes anymore in my country. I want a new one. Looked at ninja 650, more power and same weight as cbr500r, but a bit more expensive. But fair since has stronger engine and higher rpms. But I dunno if I want to spend that extra money for extra power for my first bike. Decisions... Lol I'm in love with cbr500r looks and I had the most fun driving with cb500f at my driving school. First lessons were with that one and then passed to the mt07. Stronger but didn't feel that much fun. Dunno if was just that first feeling riding a bike with the cb500f or is actually more fun to ride than Mt. And the sound seems quite good for a 2 cylinder stock exhaust.
For most people who buy a litre bike its an ego thing I've rode bikes for years and you get more fun working for it i live in the UK though and twisty roads are more interesting than doing 190 on a high way
Liked the message at the beginning - I think exactly the same things when I wake up each morning. If we work together and look after eachother, we will beat this. The timing of this thoughtful video was perfect - I tested this bike yesterday and agree with everything you say. However, I will probably go for the Ninja 650 as it offers more flexibility for the type of riding I intend to do. The CBR500R is a hoot though - even experienced riders will have a lot of fun on it.
For a start!!!!! The real facts are this ! Wait for it! The ace in the hole with the cbr 500 I’m getting 85mpg regularly. It’s GRREEAAAT! It’s a commuter. Don’t buy a Kawasaki 400 you get 40mpg. Hahahaha a bloody bike that goes a bit faster costs twice as much to run. I don’t get people can’t understand that it’s a nice cheap to run commuter that looks great, rides great and will last a lifetime if treated well and serviced.
Here in the UK a full licence bike you actually learn on in biker school and riding tests over your course that lasts from 1 week to a few month, you learn on a 600cc. I will step down and buy a cbr 500r for my 1st bike.
i went from a ninja 250, rode it for about 5 months and moved to a cbr 500r. i didn't know it's just another beginner bike. i would've gone bigger if i had known. regardless, i still enjoy the cbr!
The CBR500R has a 4.5 gallon tank, vs a 3.6 gallon on the Ninja 400. They both get around 65-70mpg, so I’ll take the bigger CBR for a more comfortable ride for me at 6’ 190 lbs. I’m going to look a the 2022 models as of now, but I want to check out the CBR500F, the Kawasaki 650 Ninja, and the Z650.
Its honestly not a small bike. It rides more upright more than a supersport so i think itd be more a matter of your spine comfort rather than looking like a bear lol
I ride the CB125R here in UK and probably my "Pride processor " , is broken as I don't care about what others, think or say, don't feel embarrassed if I stall at the traffic lights or anything, I just go out for the fun of it and boy Nimbus ,(my bike), is fun, especially when you weave through traffic and leave 20 cars behind .It's nippy and agile and that's all you need. In future I will probably go for the CB650R or Suzuki Boulevard M109R ,haha 😄. You need to empty your mind of worries and ride your ride ,go at a speed you are comfortable with and don't let others tell you otherwise. I went on 73MPH and call me weird , but that throat clenching ,the wind gives you, it's kinda addictive. I don't want to know how it's on 650, probably the "claw" grabs you faster by the throat, haha. Anyway ,while going 73Mph I was thinking : " What if something goes wrong ? " , and then I said, " If it is to happen, I did something that I enjoyed to the end, so no regret! " But hey that's just the weird me.
Your attitude is amazing, to be grateful for all God has given us. Take nothing for granted, nothing is free in this world except for the grace of God. I have my CB 750 and I'm so grateful to be able to do the same, to go for a nice ride. No my bike isn't super fast, it isn't super slow either, it's more than enough for my needs. God bless you. Mike.
Great bike and great video. Been looking at the cbr600rr for my second bike, but after talking to people and watching videos the cbr500 is more suitable for me.
Cant go wrong. Do yourself a favor and just try your best to love whatever you end up on, try to be safe, skillful and have the most fun. Deliberately.
I had that issue. Went to find some ninja 400 at some kawasaki dealers, seemed more logical to me even loving the looks of cbr500r and already knowing how fun that engine was, driving the naked version, a cb500f some times. But I found that this year they stopped ninja 400 distribution, in my country at least. No 2021 version available. So they sold out the remaining 2020 bikes this year. If I want one must be second handed. I want new. So I'm left with cbr500r. I also saw the ninja 650, extra power but extra money too. It's my first bike. Maybe it's the destiny calling me for cbr500r XD I'm hypnotized with the red version.
@No_Name in my opinion cbr500r have better looks, a bit heavier and more grounded for highway winds, more comfort riding solo and even more riding with a passenger. Ninja has better performance wakes up at 7000 rpm getting more sportive, it's pretty but something about it that looks like a Lego.
I went with the 2020 Yamaha R3. Love it, with a full exhaust and tune it’ll keep up with this 350-500cc segment. I don’t weigh a ton, so that helps. It’s capable on the highway too, no problem cruising at 80MPH+ for hours with occasional 100MPH+ jaunts. If you weigh less than 200lbs I recommend looking at the R3 as well. Reliable, efficient, plenty of aftermarket parts available, and it looks amazing. I’ve pulled a KTM RC390 at higher speeds with a stock R3, the single cylinder just doesn’t have that top end like the R3’s parallel twin engine does. Definitely interested in finding a Honda CBR500R to compare to with.
When i made this video i was ignorant of power/weight ratio. The R3 is a fantastic platform and people obviously love them! The extra displacement of the honda is mitigated by its bulkiness but i think performance wise they are similar. R3 might have more top end as i understand it
I went with an MT03 for my 1st bike , has plenty of power for the weight and won't get you into trouble as fast as an 07. The Honda is a great bike too for a beginner as are the Yamaha 300's. Both the Yammie and Honda are ultra dependable and at the end of the day it just comes down to the individuals riding style IMO. CHEER👍
I just picked up a 2017 500r with 6k miles for only 2k! This chick owned this bike and got cut off so she dumped it, so its scraped up the right side but not badly... but she got terrified of it so she didn't care about it. She wanted 2500, I offered 2k cash and got it.
Thanks for your video! I want to realize a long time dream to ride a sports bike and when I saw the CBR500r in grey and red I feel in love. I am hesitant between this one and a Kawasaki Ninja 400 ABS, but I don really love the look of the CBR500R. I want to follow a course and get my license as soon as possible. I know practically nothing about bikes, but I know I loved riding them as a passenger, I love the feel and look of it and am thinking it’s now or never and I want to go slowly and become skilled. Thanks again!
The ninja is a better value if youre after performance and is the more thrilling of the two but the Honda is more refined and comfortable. More practical. Both will be excellent as a first foray into the sport bike realm.
@@HaoVu1 Thanks! Good to know! So hard to decide haha! As I said, I need to get my license but I am so excited I finally decided to take action on my dream.
Thank you for all the info. I am planning to get either a 2022 NINJA 400 or a 2021 CB500 R this Spring....My concern is only the weight as I am just 61 kgs...
Then the bike will go even faster and have an easy time zipping you around wherever your heart desires. Dont worry about your weight just make time to really get to know how to ride and control the machibe and you will be just fine🙏
Do you think that a 5’3 person would be able to tip toe while sitting on the bike? Or just have no type of difficulty trying to stand the bike up while at a light?
It depends on how long your legs are. At that height you would probably have some trouble and be on your toes for sure but you can always just lean the bike on one side when youre stopped
I grabbed a pre-owned 2019 790 Duke and so far so good with reliability...fingers crossed. One of the reasons however for going non-Japanese was that insurance seemed to be cheaper on Euro brands and Twins. I suspect this is because riders tend to throw Japanese Sport Bikes down the road on the regular. For all my insurance quotes, my 790 Duke came in much cheaper than the 2007~2008 CBR 600RR I was looking at.
@@HaoVu1 Clearly the Insurance Company and driving record play a role. My record is clean, but I was late getting my license since I haven't owned a bike for decades. Geico was more than Progressive, but the CBR was more than the KTM by quite a bit. Easy enough to run some online quotes.
Love the bike and plan on getting one myself ASAP after my licensing. Maybe not the R variant, but a CB500F is a tough find. I don’t want to be another Ninja boy and the Z400 is another rarity. Too bad the rest of the big four ignore everything between 300-650cc
TheHaoVuMotoVlog yep. Grew up around DC and currently live around Baltimore. My work takes me to all kinds of backroads that would be perfect fun on a bike instead of the F150 I work with. Gotta have that extra degree of freedom on my off days
TheHaoVuMotoVlog thanks! I’m aiming for an MSF course other than HD since they charge $100+ more than other basic rider courses. I’ll keep my eye out for a decent naked to help fix the sports:cruiser ratio out here. Last week i spotted 15 cruisers, 3 sports, and 2 naked standards.
Hey, Im only in highschool and got my bike licence a month ago. I got no expreience of riding other than on the learners course. Today Im going to check out a 2018 cbr500ra (ABS) that done 11000km and I got it down to $3000. Its a great price but what worries me is the weight and the power. Do you think I will be fine to learn on it? Or do you reckon I should get a smaller engine/bike.
I'd stick with what you have the cbr500 isn't worth all that extra money you would be better of getting a 600ccplus it's to heavy and it's boring although it's great quality but so is the ninja 400 and it's better on corners ect
what are your thoughts about the CB500R? I just got one as my 1st bike knowing im learning how to ride. I know im not fast but I love the feel and look and its forgiving I feel like
They are similar. Perfect first bike or maybe forever bike. Most people upgrade the bike when they become “comfortable” riding motorcycles in general but their skill is actually not that great. Take your time, enjoy it bro.
@@HaoVu1 I think you are missing the important fact. The power to weight ratio matters more than the volume of the cylinders .Let me put the facts for you. R3 produces 42 bhp with a kerb weight of 162 kg while CBR500R produces 47 bhp with a kerb weight of 192 kg.You can do the maths.
@@jnana1985 what u need to take into consideration is that the cbr500r produces more torque - over 10 lb-ft more than the peak torque on the r3 so I wouldn't really compare them

I just don't wanna be disappointed. I'm not experienced rider and I only had that bike for a year and sold it but I loved it when I had it.
The 500 isnt going to be the best bet or even close to the best bet if wheelie-ing is high on your list. Not to say that you absolutely cant do it, its just not the right bike for that
I’ve got a wife and kids. Having passing power at 70-80 MPH on 2 wheels is definitely not slow by any stretch of the imagination for a guy like me. And it looks like a super sport? Oh yeah. We wants it, we needs it, must have the precious! 😍
Im not sure, i changed the oil myself. The first service is just an oil and filter change. Im sure my local Honda dealer wouldve charged at least $80-100 for a simple oil change
Its the safest bet to go with ABS. But learning the technical skills you need on a bike without ABS will serve you better overall since you wont depend on technology to save you. On the other hand…you could always just ride ABS bikes and never have to worry about it.
Getting M license because they not allowing g2 testing since covid, plan on this being my first bike, faster then walking, looks sexy, not super expensive.

Congrats and good luck Melanie?
Bought a CBR500R as my first bike. I have had it for over 4 years now (used 2013 model) and still don't feel a need to upgrade. It is honestly perfect.
It is cheap and reliable. It is fast enough to have some fun but at the same time very forgiving. You won't be doing any accidental wheelies on this bike.
Are these all rides in West Sac? Such an empty roads and good roads, but I guess it's different now since lock downs lifted.
Mostly west sac. Theres not much traffic since im riding after work or weekends in these areas
@@HaoVu1 I guess I should check it out, I used drive in that part of town several years ago, just as that area was building up.
Dude the way you explained it. it’s great 👍 I do believe that my first bike it’s going to be a Honda 500 rr . Thanks a lot for you video and everything you said as a beginner or future beginners all’s you said helps A LOT !!
Thank you Jose that means a lot bro, best of luck on that bike!
I've almost had my cbr500r for a month & with it being my first bike , I don't think would have picked any other bike over it. I have a red one and with the LED lights I figured less people would pull out or blow stop signs on me but that's false. Regardless. Still loving every minute of it.

Counting the blessings and food on the table.. 💚💚🙏🏻🙏🏻💯💯 sometimes we don’t enjoy what we have, thinking on what we wish to have.. May the lord bless u bud. Great video. 2019 cbr 500 and 2021 650 ninja..Im still learning. And Im happy with them.. but I WISH! 😁 I can buy a yamaha r6 2021 in a few years. Thanks for your videos.
Agreed...its a great platform with a good balance of power and efficiency
The honda cbr500r is gonna be my first bike. I have a full license but i like to take it easy. The cbr500 got the looks and its good enough for the highway.
I think you will love it papa. I know it
Me to when I can get my license after lockdown here in the UK has finished, done my CBT
For most people who buy a litre bike its an ego thing I've rode bikes for years and you get more fun working for it i live in the UK though and twisty roads are more interesting than doing 190 on a high way
A few people that have ridden this on a track say its actually very good at keeping up with 600's.
A 300 can keep up with a 600 on the track. Its mostly the skill of the rider when youre not talking about straight line performance
Definitely, that Ninja seems like a lot more bang for your buck!! Cheers

Preach it brother man
85mpg? My 125cc only does 90mpg....that's really impressive. If I had room for more than one bike I would get one.
@@ElCoco1984 that’s what reports are saying.
It is ironic that a 500cc class bike is considered today to be a "Beginner bike".
just bought this bike and it is incredible
Been watching your reviews, I really appreciate the way you talk about the bikes you’ve been so helpful🙏🙏
Thanks Irah i appreciate it
Here in the UK a full licence bike you actually learn on in biker school and riding tests over your course that lasts from 1 week to a few month, you learn on a 600cc.
I will step down and buy a cbr 500r for my 1st bike.
What kind of 600 is it? Surely not a super sport?
@@HaoVu1 I use for my training an yamaha FZ6 fazer
you crossed a red signal at 5:47. forwarding your video to the traffic department. :D

Looking at buy this same bike for a commuter. You got the best scenery in Sacto!!
I hear ninja 400 is fun.
I hear the Honda is dignified.
I love that intro with words of wisdom that immediately earned a sub from me! ;)
i went from a ninja 250, rode it for about 5 months and moved to a cbr 500r. i didn't know it's just another beginner bike. i would've gone bigger if i had known. regardless, i still enjoy the cbr!
@@ElCoco1984 - I’ve read that. The CBR is a little bigger, has a wider tire, and gets better gas mileage.
I’m 6’4 170lbs, I haven’t had the chance to sit on one yet but I’m just wondering if I’d be fine on this bike and not look like a bear on a bike
Its honestly not a small bike. It rides more upright more than a supersport so i think itd be more a matter of your spine comfort rather than looking like a bear lol
Sacramento!!!!!! Love the video.
dont start on a 400cc or smaller if your 6"1 255ibs
What if Im 6’1” 210lbs?
But hey that's just the weird me.
Sounds like youve got some of that secret sauce that makes for a happy life my friend. Cheers! 🙏👌😎
I understand, I had a 125 cbr, now I’ve got a 500 cbr, a new one and it goes like hell. Does 85mpg and I will never need to upgrade. It’s very quick.
Mike.
I just bought a 500r.. love it. Came across your vid… awesome vid. Are those bay area roads?
Congrats Bobby! Here is Sacramento but a lot of my footage is around sonoma napa
those places were beautiful....
Thanks for a very informative and entertaining video. You presented a reasonable critique and demonstrated objective, rational points.
Great bike and great video. Been looking at the cbr600rr for my second bike, but after talking to people and watching videos the cbr500 is more suitable for me.
No cold beer in the fridge right now, but it's on the way...
🍻
I had started on a grom because I had bought it cheap put dirt tires on it and bigger rear sprocket and made it like a dirt bike 😂
Honda CB(R)500s are great. Honda is making bikes to last forever and to be as completed as they can, whilst doing something different.
Those bars look like they’re at a weird angle. Who knows, maybe they feel really good. It just looks a little odd.
Great content ...2 more months and ill have my cbr
That's awesome. Which year bike?
3 more days till I get mine 😁
Did you get it?
How's the bike?
Kudos for that Hello Kitty keychain!
Standard question: How tall are you? And do you think the seat is high enough for you?
I am 5’8” and i thought it was perfect. I was not able to flat foot it though
@@HaoVu1 thanks :)

@@HaoVu1 rains a lot though doesn’t snow too often
I want a ninja 400 but I saw a white cbr 500rr at the dealer and I fell in love, now I don't know which to get 😭😭😭
Cant go wrong. Do yourself a favor and just try your best to love whatever you end up on, try to be safe, skillful and have the most fun. Deliberately.
@GregAndr debatable
Another smashing vid I’m loving my 500r 😁
im about to pick mine up today , got the red one , really excited 😎
Dude! Man im excited FOR you😎
Red gives it 10 more hp. Be careful
its a great comute it barely uses any feul it never breaks down
I went with the 2020 Yamaha R3.
R3 might have more top end as i understand it
Honda definitely has more low end :)
R3 isnt that great in traffic, it's too peaky. Honda would be a bit better with low down torque but a bit heavier too.
Thats a deal bro!! First bike or just a new addition to the garage?
@@HaoVu1 its my 2nd one. I kind of want to fix it then sell it but then I want to keep it just because its so cheap
@@HaoVu1 its the u.s. black and orange, non cali, non abs version.
Good feeling knowing that unless you blow it up theres basically no way you can lose money on it even if you ride it for years
@@HaoVu1 exactly, if something happens im not losing out on a whole lot of money.
Lol it’s looks like a sweet bike tho. 600 miles in a day! That’s a huge ride
Great review. I am considering this bike hence I subscribe. Great honest reviews. Keep them coming.
I love mine. I had a 300r before this. Loved both of them.
Why the hell would you buy a used motorcycle for only a few hundred dollars less when you’re spending thousands anyway?!
And what about the Ninja 650 ABS 2021? I went to the dealership and sat on it and I think I am in love 🥰 I found great reviews too.
@@StitchBolduc1974 I got the Ninja 400. Very nice and light. Only flaw is it blows you in the wind
Cbr 500 or cb500f or mt03 . Idk which is ok. Cant go more than 450 or 470cc
Thanks for the video. Sac town !
Can you learn to wheelie on a 500??
Its really not the best choice but yeah if you were dedicated enough you could get it up
Great one. Thx
Love these bikes.. I have a cb500f as a first bike. So damn good👍
They are great all arounders
I grabbed a pre-owned 2019 790 Duke and so far so good with reliability...fingers crossed. One of the reasons however for going non-Japanese was that insurance seemed to be cheaper on Euro brands and Twins. I suspect this is because riders tend to throw Japanese Sport Bikes down the road on the regular. For all my insurance quotes, my 790 Duke came in much cheaper than the 2007~2008 CBR 600RR I was looking at.
Very interesting. I had an 08 600RR and they wanted $160 a month full coverage
Ill let you know if i see any sweet deals on the 500F! You live in the DMV?
TheHaoVuMotoVlog yep. Grew up around DC and currently live around Baltimore. My work takes me to all kinds of backroads that would be perfect fun on a bike instead of the F150 I work with. Gotta have that extra degree of freedom on my off days
Word i grew up in silver spring. UMBC for school. Good luck on your license, shred up those back roads!
TheHaoVuMotoVlog thanks! I’m aiming for an MSF course other than HD since they charge $100+ more than other basic rider courses. I’ll keep my eye out for a decent naked to help fix the sports:cruiser ratio out here. Last week i spotted 15 cruisers, 3 sports, and 2 naked standards.
what if you are getting your A2 license i think it is a good choice if you are 19
I’m 17 and thinking of getting this as my first bike 😅
Hey, Im only in highschool and got my bike licence a month ago. I got no expreience of riding other than on the learners course. Today Im going to check out a 2018 cbr500ra (ABS) that done 11000km and I got it down to $3000. Its a great price but what worries me is the weight and the power. Do you think I will be fine to learn on it? Or do you reckon I should get a smaller engine/bike.
Itll be perfectly fine. It doesnt have the kind of power and torque that can get you into trouble so just take it slow no worries
lololol hello kitty... (i have a KTM RC 390, and seriously thought about the cbr 500r)
I'd stick with what you have the cbr500 isn't worth all that extra money you would be better of getting a 600ccplus it's to heavy and it's boring although it's great quality but so is the ninja 400 and it's better on corners ect
Are the ferrings in the intro stock? They look different than the options available in Canada. If they are aftermarket where did you get them from?
They are stock, i just removed the sticker decals with heat from a blow dryer and just slowly peeling them
Can you read the instrument cluster with polarized glasses on?

I had a 97 honda cbr600 F3 or 4 I forget when I was 22. Fast forward 10 Yeats later I'm looking for another bike wanna go new and I'm looking at price and the 500 I'd 7 to 8,000 and the 600r is 12,000 or more. I really don't care about going fast just looks and being able to go the speed limit without struggle. And I wanna learn how to wheelie now lol. And the 2022 500 looks the same as the 600 almost. I just don't wanna be disappointed. I'm not experienced rider and I only had that bike for a year and sold it but I loved it when I had it.
The 500 isnt going to be the best bet or even close to the best bet if wheelie-ing is high on your list. Not to say that you absolutely cant do it, its just not the right bike for that
Nice bike....i m still waighting for this bike
I’ve got a wife and kids. Having passing power at 70-80 MPH on 2 wheels is definitely not slow by any stretch of the imagination for a guy like me.
And it looks like a super sport? Oh yeah. We wants it, we needs it, must have the precious! 😍
How much was your first maintenance? Are the maintenance costs for the CBR usually higher or about the same then other bikes?
Im not sure, i changed the oil myself. The first service is just an oil and filter change. Im sure my local Honda dealer wouldve charged at least $80-100 for a simple oil change
Thanks for the reply!
Been thinking about a CBR250/300 to learn on, but most of those don’t have ABS. Seems like everyone says to go ABS as a noob. Thoughts?
Its the safest bet to go with ABS. But learning the technical skills you need on a bike without ABS will serve you better overall since you wont depend on technology to save you. On the other hand…you could always just ride ABS bikes and never have to worry about it.
@@HaoVu1 solid points on both sides. Thanks for the advice. 😎👍
