It is nice to see one video out 50 where someone understands that this common issue is hardware related rather than software related. Thanks for making it. For those who are reading this comment, the issue is probably due simply to some dust and dirt between the contacts of the jack port, rather than those of the speakers. In the case of the retina 2012 for example, those contacts are under the little internal cable of the jack. So you need to take out the bottom cover of the macbook, unplug the cable of the jack, clean with alcol 96% its soldered contacts, which are just below, you can only see them after you unplug the cable, and in 5 minutes the issue will likely be solved.

I don’t normally comment on video posts but I have been trying to figure out why my computer all of a sudden had no sound, and why my internal speaker wasn’t showing in my settings this video was heaven sent thank you so much! The only video that had useful information for me and this situation. I just messed with my headphone jack and got it to come back on! I never would have thought of it again thank you 😁

Before trying this extreme approach, try spraying some screen cleaner liquid or foam onto the 3.5mm jack and keep plugging and unplugging into the Mac headphone jack. TURN OFF THE LAPTOP FIRST. This worked for me in 2mins and is far less intrusive.

First you should undo the manipulation than try playing with the headphone plug in and out many times to see if the sound comes back. It could be dust or the plug could be damaged. If damaged than just buy something like that www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OJ5AV8I/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1501276748&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=usb+headphone+adapter&dpPl=1&dpID=51R6KUNYcTL&ref=plSrch
