  • We have fixed at Macbook Pro A1278. It has no sound from the internal speakers. The speakers did not appear in the sound options, in settings, on the macbook. So we tracked the fault to the "Tip detect Circuit" or AUD_J1_TIPDET. Then we fixed this faulty Macbook, and now its going to be upcycled, and donated to a local charity.#MBKupcycle #applerepair
    QUICK TIP: If the audio socket/jack is not used anymore (people have moved onto bluetooth speakers/headphones). You can do a quick and nasty, just short out pins 1 & 2 on the plug audio socket/jack. Checkout that, in the video (Easy Method).

    Had this issue with my MB Pro Mid 2021. After watching this video had a look at the headphone connection and it had a red light on. Connected the headphone jack on and pull it out and the internal speaker started working again. Lucky it was an easy fix for me!!!

      Interesting that a 2021 MBP still has this problem. I had hoped that Apple had resolved the issue. You may have this problem again so consider cleaning the port (see my post).

    Good explanation of a problem. It was informative that you found the problem is localized to the failure to close that circuit. I'm not certain what series you're working on but on earlier Macbook Pro laptops, the loss of internal speakers was accompanied by a red light showing in the port. On a different video, I described the following (similar to your findings, a circuit is not closed after a plug is removed):
    This loss of internal speakers is a common fault on the 2009-2013 Macbook Pro laptops because of a (poor) headphone jack/port design. The headphone port also serves as a connection point for digital output and there is a mechanical switch built into it for that purpose. The design isn't truly bad except that it prioritizes the optical output with a poorly designed switch. When you insert a headphone cable, the analog output or digital output is enabled but when you remove the plug, the switch doesn't always close and thereby switch to the internal speakers. If the internal speakers on your MPB do not work, then the optical output is likely enabled -- indicated by a red light in the empty headphone jack. There is no way to physically switch this setting ... at best, inserting and removing a plug will exercise the contacts to make a positive connection and disable the optical output, temporarily.
    Personally, I have tried (or considered) all of the solutions/repairs offered online and some work and some don't but none are the most efficient solution, i.e., making the port work as intended. I determined all of this by reviewing what little design information and schematics were available online and then tearing down a computer and (destructively) investigating the faulty port. I have also experimented with bending the contacts to promote the mechanical leverage of the switch contacts but that was not conclusively effective. One "permanent" solution would be to replace the headphone jack on the logic board but I would not recommend it unless done by a skilled repair technician and it could be costly (dismantling the computer, remove/desolder the headphone jack, reinstall/resolder it, then test) or could damage the logic board.
    My admittedly temporary solution has been to thoroughly clean the headphone jack after which it will function as designed for six months or more. To clean the headphone jack:
    (1) remove a plug if any;
    (2) place a drop, or two, of (pure) isopropyl alcohol into the empty port;
    (3) exercise the port's mechanical parts by inserting and removing a plug (at least 10x);
    (4) repeat (2) and (3) once or twice in succession;
    (5) blow out the port using a dustless cleaner (canned air) and let dry.
    Over time and due to exposure to environmental conditions, I expect that the contacts corrode again and fail to close indicating that cleaning is again necessary.

      Yes I played around with the cleaning method, but found it too un-reliable. So I posted a video on a quick and easy fix.
