  • The story of chickens is the story of an animal that has conquered the planet, traveled the five continents and laid eggs at all latitudes. Starting in the forests of South-East Asia, the original Bankiva rooster, Gallus gallushas, has travelled around the world. Trusty travel companions, chickens have followed us humans on all our journeys and discoveries.
    Today there are over 52 billion on earth, seven times more than human beings, and many more than any other species of wild birds.
    Why was this feathered friend chosen by man to become a central pillar of our agriculture? How did this darkly plumed forest species become so diverse in colour, form and behaviour? What is the everyday life of the hens and roosters that surround us?
    Battery-farmed in dark hangars, raised outdoors in the countryside of the South of France, in Thai combat training centers, in survivalists’ bunkers, on Hawaii’s beaches or New York’s roofs, chickens can live many different lives.
    Entering the chickens’ world takes us on a world tour to encounter the funniest, craziest and most lovable animals. We will try to better understand the ups and downs of their private life, their behaviour, their relationships with other fowl and of course with men.

    This is my favorite documentary of all time; it has the best information on chickens, and their origins that I’ve found this far!

    Watching the chickens fight in slow motion is crazy. The dodging and attacks is reminds me of boxing

    After the pandemic...where we starved in a concrete city....we moved to a rural area, bought chicks, and planted a garden. Never again. We forage and can. Not counting on "the system" again. If you buy a chicken, you have food tomorrow...and tomorrow's tomorrow. A good investment.

    Adding another feeder and having feed out more often would reduce the bullying of Wiggy. There's no need for her to look and be treated so poorly, even without a roo.

      You are perfectly correct! Giving them feed in different parts of the chicken yard is a good solution. I have two roosters, and nor them, nor the chickens are looking like that. When a chick looks like that, it is a clear sign that she has to be isolated from the rest so she can recover.

    To me the most beautiful chickens are the American gamefowl wishing the breed there’s is lines and their color and plumage is unbelievable.peruvian and Spanish are also good looking birds

    I am curious as to how the Brooklands rooftop garden ended up having a weed problem, especially grass. They had every opportunity to keep it weed free from the start. Any rare weed arrival by wind should have been jumped on and prevented from seeding.

      sadly people are not that smart. Especially professors and whatnot. WE have devolved. Birds are descended from dinosaurs. They are smart and if given the brain power wd have would make good use of it.

      also the grass might have be on purpose since they love it and it has lots of bugs. thats probably the only reason the little grey hen is still alive.

    my gosh that hen or rooster at 19:48 had me rollin. If pink was a chicken she would be that chicken. Anyone know the breed? I would love to add at least 4 to my flock. They are just impeccable.

    i think Philippians had more deeper tradition in terms of cock fighting than Thailand. Although it is more brutal than Thailand but the culture lives majority in every provinces.

    Jesus, the hens in NYC, if a hen is being picked on so much she can't access food and is losing feather, ADD ANOTHER FEEDER OR TWO, it's not rocket science. Poor hens.

    • @auxphoenix
      @auxphoenix 10 місяців тому +1

      no, chickens at the bottom of the pecking order lose feathers from being pecked by the other chickens higher up, it's not from malnourishment

    • @evieblessed
      @evieblessed 10 місяців тому +4

      @@auxphoenix , irrelevant. If she's losing feathers because she's being pecked then she doesn't have enough space to escape and cannot easily access food. Hens can lose feathers for a variety of reasons - malnourishment, moulting, mites, lice, stress or, as you say, being targeted heavily by the other hens. Whatever the cause, it needs to be addressed, that's good animal husbandry. I've been keeping hens for well over 25 years and in the veterinary industry since the 80s.

    I'm no expert but I'm guessing jungle cockerells have shorter crows so they don't alert predators. Domesticated cocks don't need to worry about predators as much 🤔🤷‍♂🙂

    I'm watching this WITH my chickens. These spoilt creatures prefer air conditioning and fleecy blankets. See, THIS is where you came from! Oh, great....one of them just crowed. 😟 Another one down. See, this is WHY sex links were created. Mine are all heritage breeds, so.......spin the wheel of gender......
