@@akaalexanderking it's a good album, maybe better than Villains... but I'm an old school era qotsa fan and don't enjoy the band soo much these days, I haved to addmit that
@@pattonPwr i started listening after Rated R...but i get TIRED of the same old schtick, and i'm GLAD they evolved. it's better-written music, too. JHomme has just gotten better at his craft...and yes, maybe he goes down some psychedelic rabbit holes, but he also did that for most of the R album... also, he's got better musicians around him. Jon Theodore is such a better drummer than 'Fredo or Joey OR Grohl, and Mikey Shoes is, i'm sorry to say, twice the bassist that Nick was. i could keep going, but i DO think this album was a nod back to older albums. i can find pieces of songs (or whole songs) that recall styles from all the way back in their catalog. the guitars are rawer, with more distortion/fuzz, and some of the riffs are already well-stuck in my head. the more i hear it the better it sounds, which is my favorite kind of album. i hope it works out that way for you. i didn't really think a whole lot of it for the first couple listens, so there's hope.
the riffery on Obscenery is just FILTHY. sick, sick, sick. obscenely good, coming out after the string bit, at about 1:57, then the riffing starting at 3:47...a variation on the first riff i mentioned. just KILLS. i had liked Carnavoyeur and Negative Space best at first listen, but this song is my favorite on the album.
@@akaalexanderking it's like pressing pause on the song, hearing the strings absent any drums, bass, etc., then resuming only to have it be a different (but related) song coming in harder with more momentum. then when they did it again w/out the strings, they doubled the notes instead of just repeating the first riffs. i wish Matador Records wasn't involved so you could have played the whole song so people could see what it is you're connecting to. this is why i'm loving what Ren is doing, BTW...being independent gives HIM the choice, and he chooses to allow everyone to monetize off his videos, so they can play in whole. QOTSA could easily pull off going independent at this point. i wish they would. i get it, they have the #1 alt rock album out now in part b/c of the huge campaign--that's what major label involvement (Matador is half owned by Beggars Banquet) does for you...but people were going to buy these songs and pay to see them on tour no matter what.
The way I see it as an owner of a small indie label, you're hitting a point very close to home man. At the end of the day the exposure you get from these new types of media outshines the traditional marketing campaigns. And don't get me wrong: they can still make money out of reaction videos, all the ads revenue goes to the artist and the label. It's very odd to find bands where they straight up block your content, but hey, to each their own. It surely won't keep me from praising these living legends 🤘🏻
@@akaalexanderking i wonder who in their camp is handling this...b/c they're obviously out on tour. and i wonder to what % do they OWN their music vs. what Matador owns. if i were QOTSA i would demand full ownership of my work, and simply ALLOW the label the privilege of publishing for a fee on every album sold, everything that a label would want to spend $ on in order to increase sales. but a band like these guys are established enough--their fans will always buy their albums, with or without a big ad push (not to say i didn't appreciate the oddly off-kilter METHODS they used to promote this release...pretty fun little teaser vids, etc. you know a lot more than i do about how a label could squeeze additional $ out of a band via a well-written contract without necessarily having any ownership of the songs/publishing rights. don't know if you're familiar with him, but Billy Squier (80s rocker, made "The Stroke," "My Kinda Lover," several other good songs) was with Capitol Records, and rather than accepting a big advance in his contract, he made sure he had complete ownership of his music/copyrights. And Capitol still made good $ off him, or else they wouldn't have taken him on as a recording artist. BUT---not having ownership may mean that the label has to be a LOT more cutthroat when it comes to squeezing every dime out that they can. i don't know...that may include YT reaction videos, who knows? seems counterproductive though, considering that reaction channels have been shown to have a positive effect on widening an artist's reach, like how rappers and ppl who only used to listen to hip hop are now being exposed to heavy metal etc... and in my case, through Ren, i've at least had my eyes opened a bit to see that not all rap is annoying and aggressive, and some artists are inventive enough to be entertaining to me. meaning there are more like me out there who listen to rock and heavy music, some of whom may start to listen to other rappers. unless everybody is executing copyright strikes/blocks.

Not a bad album but a big disappointment IMO
Were you expecting something different genre wise or the songs simply don't catch you?

That's fair man, it is undoubtedly different. I'm sure live they'll still cover a lot from the early days though 💪🏻

I love straight jacket fitting it’s exactly the world we are living in and also the reference to The Doors was brilliant
Great song!
These guys just don’t miss. Josh Homme the 🐐 for real 🤘🏽
That man is an absolute legend, what a songwriter 🤘🏻

Fantastic, isn't it? And that strings section still gets me every time

Fun fact - the solo on Paper Machete is actually Troy! Wouldn’t have known without the live videos.
Same, it's so Queens of the Stone Age style that I just assumed it was Josh!
Best album of all time
That's a bit of a stretch for me, but great to hear you enjoyed it that much man!
Nice review man 👏 Loving the album but then it's Queens so I knew I would 😎 Oh and I think its Troy playing the solo on Paper Machete!
The level of the band is so high I wouldn't be surprised if it was Jon Theodore playing it 😂
I only listened to the first single as well. This is a "whole album" kinda band imo.
Couldn't agree more
Good but prefer old QOTSA, last 3 albums didn’t grab me so much ! paper Machete stands out ! Great reaction ! 🙂
I know, Paper Machete really feels like it's out of a mid 2000s QOTSA jam session!
Straight jacket fitting is fire as fuck. Whole album is quality but that song is easily the biggest standout for me
It's so cool, the effects on the voice, the bluesy riff, the acoustic outro... So much to love. Thanks for watching!
It’s what we are living now
