Best version ever of this song, no argument. When it was first released I had it on rotation at home. The great Chris Stainton on organ.

This is what you call singing. The emotion is raw. RIP Joe and thanks for sharing your talent with the world

Cocker's versions of songs are often the best version of said song.

He confirmed that by covering the Beatles at Woodstock.

Joe could put 'feeling' into almost any simple set of lyrics turning them into a classic. Best ever for me. RIP my friend.

I don't think I've ever seen any other singer put such emotion in his songs, just check out Woodstocks with a ill help from my friends, POWERFUL.

Pack up all my cares and woes
    Feeling low here I go
    Bye, bye blackbird
    Where somebody waits for me
    Sugar sweet so is she
    Bye, bye blackbird
No one seems to love or understand me
And all the hard luck stories they keep handing me
    Where somebody shines the light
I'll be coming on home tonight
    Bye, bye blackbird
    Bye bye blackbird
    Bye bye blackbird
Nobody seems to love or understand me
And all the hard luck stories they keep on handing me
    Where somebody shines the light
Yes I'm coming on home tonight
Bye, bye blackbird (Oh lord yeah, I wanna sing about that black bird) Oh

In his later years, he didn't have a reg band. He picked up local musicians for his concerts, I gathered that since at least two performances the band was playing using sheet music--I kid you not. However, with his performance, his voice--he cld have had a high school trio and it still would have been awesome. I'm glad I also caught his concerts in the early years too!

Since this came out 6 years earlier, it's more likely that Pink Floyd was paying a little tribute to Joe Cocker. And of course, so much of Cocker's style seems a tribute to Ray Charles

This version cries out for a soulful bluesy guitar solo but instead we get Jimmy Page bombast. Perhaps Peter Green was otherwise engaged.
