As many others, you didn't really get what goes on between 14:00-16:00. This is not really for siesta, but simply for having lunch. Beside being later than most anywhere else, lunch is also the main meal of the day for many Spaniards. When possible, it is usually made at home, in family and easily takes more than one hour. Siesta is something that is reserved for hlidays or week ends, except in the hottest areas where in Summer it is simply necessary to spend those central hours of the day at home, and people usually benefits from taking a nap and then staying up longer at night when the weather gives a pause and cools down a bit.
Basically shops close when they are no going to have any customer.... well, they are also open when one finishes work, that's very convenient. In UK you finish your work day and most places are closed or closing.
gwydno: ^^^^. this! In the largest part of Spain, outside the handful of major urban centres, going home for a long lunch remains the norm. This means there are four (not two!) rush hours in Spain, the most hectic being the rush to get home for lunch around 14:00.

I'm American by birth, but I lived most of my life in Spain. I spent 4 months in Boston in 2016, but I've been in the US 3 or 4 times more after that for short visits. These were my culture shocks. 1. US cities are all car-centered, and not pedestrian nor bike-friendly, except for very few exceptions (Washington DC, NYC, Boston itself). 2. All Americans join a sports group or some sort of group (I lived in a college campus). If you don't join one of these groups, it will be hard for you to make friends. The rest of the time, people seem to be busy (study, work, whatever) and they are not interested at all in socializing. 3. They get drunk at 9-10 pm. Way earlier than Spain hahaha 4. Man, the diet... My roomate could drink 5 Dunkin Donuts ice-coffee full of sugar a day. Damn. I ate lots of Mac and Cheese. 5. Everything seems sort of separated and isolated from each other. Outside of the campuses or the downtown city area, is hard to see anyone walking. It feels lonely, depressing and sort of dangerous at times. 6. The Target and Wallmarts stores are huge. Many stores are meant to be big so to be practical. You just go to Target, buy all you need (food, pillows, blankets) and then go home. In Spain, we do more a shopping-hopping sort of thing, to many stores for different things.
San Francisco is walkable. I don't know what you mean by "All Americans" joining a group. I don't belong to any groups. Are you referring to all Americans at university? And as for point 4, I love Spanish food but I wouldn't exactly call it healthy.
@@christopherpaul7588 that’s maybe because you link Spanish food with Mexican or LATAM food, but it’s completely different., no burritos here. Spains diet is based on Mediterranean food, our main fat is olive oil, and fresh fish and veggies are a big part of it. Most of our diet is natural and fresh and is prepared at home. We usually reject processed food on daily bases. Our diet explains why Spain has one of the longest life expectancy in the world. Going to McDonald’s type restaurant is something just urban teenagers do and not more that twice a month. Also our meals has far less quantities and calories than yours, not huge XXL bucks of sugar drinks here. Even considering globalisation are changing to worst our diet, our overweight population it’s nothing compared to the US. Being from San Francisco you probably think a healthy diet is a raw veggies diet who just some trendy elite people follow. But that’s not the average in the US I guess.

Are you trying to say Italian food is also healthy? Spain and Italy both have delicious cuisines but neither is extremely healthy. There may be lesser known dishes that are healthy. Tortilla de patata is healthier but potatoes are really a lot of empty carbs. Chorizo? Delicious but not healthy. Jamón the same. I love croquetas de jamón but they are not at all healthy. I've traveled all around Spain and have not found a region where they only eat fish and salad. Sorry. Still one of my favorite countries.
The origin of eating that late is a financial crisis a hundred years ago, when people needed two works to thrive. They worked for example 7am-3pm and 4pm-midnight, so the only moment they had to eat was at 3pm.

Para mi, siendo español, lo más chocante fue la comida. No solo la calidad de la misma, porque seamos sinceros la comida de USA es una mierda. Más bien fueron tres cosas. La primera, es un poco tontería, es que no existe una cultura hacia el pan jaja, o a comer con él o a tener buen pan. Solo pan de molde. La segunda es esa forma que tienen los estadounidenses de mezclar toda la comida en un plato, aunque no combinen nada. Y la tercera es que sobretodo en los países mediterráneos la comida no es un momento de nutrirse y ya está, como en Estados Unidos. Es un momento social que puede durar mucho tiempo y donde se comparte y se está hablando. No solo en los fines de semana. Grande Maddie los videos molan mucho
Me costó meses conseguir que me trajeran gambas con su cabeza para poder hacer una paella decente y eso en el Bay Area de California. Al final las conseguí de un mejicano en el flee market. En las pescaderias de los supers siempre eran descabezadas y no entendían por qué las quería con cabeza en lugar de limpias. Al final se me conocía por mi paella en un área bastante grande e incluso desconocidos me pedían que se la cocinase. También me costó encontrar una cafetera italiana para hacer café decente. El café, como el pan, es horrible en todo el país.

Its not siesta, it's lunch time which for spaniards is like USA dinner, the big meal of the day so you need time for that and businesses close and then reopen so the workers and people can eat. It's like the same in the US everything is closed at 7 because people are assumed to be home having dinner. The siesta is more a stereotype than a reality.
La mayor parte de gente que conozco si que se echa una siesta, aunque sea de 15 minutos. Si es verdad que si vives en una ciudad grande no te va a dar tiempo a ir a casa comer y dormir la siesta, pero en el resto de españa, muchisima gente duerme una siesta de max 20 minutos, y no tiene nada dd malo!
Everything in the US doesn’t close at 7pm, just offices work 8-5pm and they don’t usually close during 12pm (when we eat lunch) because there’s usually multiple employees and we all take lunch at different times

It actually depends quite a lot on the area and the time of the year. Siesta far more common in the warmest part of the country. For example, in Galicia you won't probably have a siesta very often in July, you will just go to the beach, or on a hike to the countryside, whereas in Seville you'll probably need to rest for at least an hour until the sun goes down a bit, as the interior can be excruciatingly warm at that time of the year.
No. Everything is not close in the afternoon because of siesta. Siesta has nothing to do with working hours or shops or anything. From monday to friday nobody who has a job do siesta. there is no time to do siesta except on weekends. And almost nobody do siesta anymore.

La tradición de cerrar a la "hora de la siesta", evidentemente viene de la siesta, que a su vez viene de la hora sexta de los romanos. No es obligatorio dormir durante la siesta y cada vez lo hace menos gente pero no por ello deja de ser una costumbre mediterránea que aún se conserva en España y que en otros países se ha perdido. En ciertas regiones de España, por el clima, no se sale a la calle en verano durante esas horas y es de muy mal gusto hacer ruidos y visitas. Antes de ofendernos es preferible saber cuál es el origen de las costumbres que tenemos día a día. La siesta es algo a revindicar, no algo de que avergonzarse.
@@hoseruisu30 No quiero empezar una discusión aquí sobre los origenes de los horarios comerciales, pero algún artículo he leído al respecto porque siendo español y viviendo en el extranjero he tenido que escuchar varias veces la idiotez de que un pais entero se paraliza durante 2 horas al día para que sus ciudadanos se vayan a dormir. Evidentemente esto no es así y las razones historicas de los horarios comerciales NO tienen nada que ver con irse a dormir en mitad de la tarde. Antiguamente era el tiempo que se tenía para comer entre 2 jornadas laborales distintas. Sí, antiguamente los pobres tenían que trabajar desde que amanecia hasta aproximadamente el mediodia en un trabajo, volver a casa, comer, prepararse y volver a trabajar en otra actividad totalmente diferente. Nada que ver con echarse un sueñecito. Así que el que tiene que informarse aquí creo que no soy yo. Estoy muy bien leído al respecto y no hago suposiciones porque parezcan "evidentes" tal como tu escribes. Otra cosa: esa costumbre que tu dices que es exclusivamente mediterranea no es tal. Incluso en inglés tienen una palabra propia para siesta (nap) y si existe la palabra existe la acción. En todo el planeta se duerme siesta (comprobado en primera persona porque he viajado por medio mundo) si hay ocasión y ganas. Lo que es muy molesto es pensar que es algo que solo se hace en españa, es muy molesto que te coloquen la etiqueta de vago por ser español y que la falta de comprensión del concepto siesta contribuya a esa etiqueta. El origen de la siesta se remonta al Imperio romano. La palabra ‘siesta’ proviene del latín ‘sexta’, que hace referencia a la sexta hora del día. La siesta ademas se ha trasladado a otros sitios porque se ha visto que es beneficioso para el cuerpo según muchos estudios de la NASA. Incluso en otros paises tan alejados como Japón tambien se practica la siesta, alli le llaman "Inemuri" que significa "estar presente mientras se duerme" es habitual hacerlo en el trabajo o en el transporte publico, parques publicos y se considera algo positivo porque quiere decir que has rendido todo lo que has podido. La verdadera razon es que suelen dormir menos de 7 horas al día así que tienen que realizar el inemuri para poder recuperarse.

En realidad el mayor error está en pensar que las horas de cierre de los comercios a mediodía y hasta la tarde son debidos a la siesta, pero quitando eso, no estoy de acuerdo en que lo de la siesta sea un simple topicazo ni que sea algo de antaño o de ciertos colectivos. No sé cómo serán las estadísticas si es que las hay, pero bajo mi percepción y como siestero orgulloso siempre que puedo, yo diría que es un poco fifty-fifty. Creo que a veces intentamos enmendar el error de los extranjeros que no se enteran bien de cómo va lo de la siesta con otra falsedad que es decir que eso no lo hacen más que los niños y los viejos, como renegando de ello para que no parezca que somos unos gandules. Hay grandes diferencias entre norte y sur, y obedecen principalmente al clima y a las diferentes ocupaciones. No te puedes ir al campo a segar en verano en el sur a las 3 de la tarde, esos trabajos empiezan muy temprano... Y aunque ya no se hagan, forman parte de la cultura. El tema de los horarios es más reciente, tenemos la misma hora que Alemania o Polonia desde la dictadura, y no se cenaba hasta que el "cabeza de familia" llegaba a la casa de su segundo trabajo... hola maddie, I am also from the states and I have not "lived" in Spain however, I've had a staycation in Madrid for 10 days which isn't long at all but it was enough to get a decent understanding on the city. I agree with what you said about the way they dress in Madrid as its somethign I tell my friends all the time about how formal they dress in Spain and in Europe as a whole in comparison to here in the US. I did not deal with much siesta as I was in Madrid and honestly myself had a hard time adjusting to the time change but I also agree with the eating late and how the work life balance is a lot more forgiving in Madrid. multiple nights I was out aft midnight thinking the city would be shut down but I was so live and vibrant and made me feel jealous of everyone who has the privilege to live there. I cannot wait for my trip to Barcelona and Sevilla In the spring and hope to one day call Spain home! great video and a new sub here!

🧡🧡💛💛💚💚💙💙💜💜🤎🤎🖤🖤🤍🤍 Lo que mas me sorprendió de los Estados Unidos, fue que hay muchas gente pasada de peso, muy gruesas con 100 a 130kilos de peso,, asea en USA se come mucha comida basura y mucha cantidad,, lo segundo que mas me sorprendió de USA es que los americanos culturalmente hablando tiene un nivel muy bajo, la mayoria son incapaces de decir mas de 15 estados americanos, lo que deduzco es que los americanos en general se creen el ombligo del mundo!! Hola Maddie, he visto algunos tik toks tuyos y me pareces muy simpática y graciosa. Soy de Barcelona y vivo en Chicago desde hace ya 7 largos años...Lo de la siesta me parece algo exagerado, porque de niña, en casa, la hacíamos sólo en verano, cuando por el calor de la tarde era insufrible estar en la calle. No la he vuelto a hacer y así hay millones de españoles. Lo de las horas para comer es otra historia, a muchos europeos también les chocan porque tienen horarios más parecidos a los de Estados Unidos...En mi caso, aquí en Chicago, preparaba la comida sobre las 3, porque mis hijos salían del High School muertos de hambre por la "¿comida?" que les daban entre 11:30 y 12. Así que comíamos y cenábamos con horario español. Lo de las vacaciones sí que es un buen choque, por lo escasas que son. En cuanto a la gente...pues sí, hacer amigos es súper complicado, de hecho, sólo tengo amigos hispanoamericanos A la gente de aquí no le interesa demasiado el otro, la cultura individualista es muy solitaria. Te deseo lo mejor, eres muy joven y con esa alegría e interés por el resto del mundo que tú tienes, seguro que la vida te va a sonreir. :)) Carmen
El descanso de medio día es para comer en familia y cuando los niños tenían jornada partida "escolar", todos en casa a comer a las 14:00. Esto se esta perdiendo por la cultura y la necesidad de trabajar padre y madre. Los niños comen en los colegios y hace pocos años eso no existía. La siesta es para los mayores y las vacaciones. Se para 2 a 3 horas para comer.
Yo soy de Barcelona y siempre he vivido aqui. Nunca he hecho siesta, pero si que es verdad que hay gente que la hace. Y en cuanto al horario de comer yo como sobre las 2.30 - 3h pero ceno a las 8.30. Creo que todo depende de la familia y de la persona pero bueno, buen comentario.

Discrepo un poco con los "horarios" de la siesta,es cierto que se cierran muchos comercios al mediodia de 14 a 16 aprox.,pero mas que para la siesta,es para tener un par de horas para comer.
En verdad es al contrario a lo de la siesta, en lugar de trabajar seguido de 9 a 5 , se trabaja por la mañana, luego cierran un rato, y vuelven por la tarde a trabajar otra vez, o sea que en realidad se trabajan mas horas que en otros paises
Hi Maddie! Nice video and great Spanish. But the 'siesta thing' is not too accurate. I wish I could have a siesta everyday but it's something people do usually in summer while on holiday to avoid the heat or at the weekend.
For me the most cultural shock I experienced when I lived in California was the need of a car to go everywhere, how big and packed were the Highway and how big was the State. A beautiful place with amazing beaches, mountains and a wheather so simular to the one we have in Murcia. Lovely place California, I really had I beautiful time there.
1) So, to summarise: in Spain they work to live; in the USA they live to work. 2) Also: speaking today (the 5th of January) America´s first mass shooting of the year has hit the news, while here in Spain the Christmas holidays are still in full swing; lots of parades tonight for Tres Reyes tomorrow. 3) Not sure where you get this idea about Spanish "formal dressing" from; leggings are virtually uniform for many young women here. :D
Es verdad, los leggings son muy comunes, pero Madrid y Barcelona son capitales de la moda del mundo, así q es muy común ir medio vestido cuando sales. No ir con el chandal ese que llevas por casa si tu me entiendes.
Vivo en los EEUU desde hace mas de 20 años, y lo que los españoles no se dan cuenta es que la "petarda vulgaris americana" (como esta amiga) es un animal urbano tan común o mas que en Espana, no os dejéis engañar, que no es oro todo lo que reluce...que no hay nada que copiar o muy poquito...
Hay varias cosas de Estados Unidos con las que no podría vivir, pero la número 1 es sin duda el sistema sanitario. No me cabe en la cabeza que no haya un sistema de salud pública universal.
Lo de la siesta es otro topico se cierra en pequeños comercios porque va poca afluencia porque aqui se come fuerte a esa hora y en verano mucho calor y porque se alarga horario laboral por clima, en paises nordicos todo es de 9 a 5 ininterrumpido no comen fuerte mediodia y en invierno a las 3 se empieza oscurecer , aqui se acaba a la 20 horas , anochece mas tarde , nos ajustamos al clima y costumbres, en grandes ciudades no hay "siesta" , comercios no pequeños no cierran mediodía, aqui realmente las siestas no las hace entre semana sino niños y personas mayores o estudiantes...
Quien te escuche pensaría que en España no se trabaja, es injusto que tomes las vacaciones escolares como ejemplo de lo que hace la población en general. Los trabajadores tienen derecho a 23 días laborables de vacaciones al año y existen adicionalmente 15 días feriados nacionales/locales a lo largo del año y no suele haber más de 2 días feriados consecutivos (jueves y viernes santo por ejemplo, nada de 1 o 2 semanas en semana santa). En cuanto a la supuesta siesta, muchos restaurantes y locales cierran para que su personal pueda comer y preparar el local para la jornada de la tarde. Igualmente hay que cumplir con las 8 horas de trabajo diario o más. Por supuesto muchos de los que no trabajamos en el sector comercial/servicios laboramos de 8 a 5 como en otros paises. Los domingos, restaurantes y otros sitios de esparcimiento están abiertos pero, excepto en Madrid, no se considera necesario que las tiendas abran ya que muchas abren hasta las 9-10 de la noche los otros días.
Para mi el horario fue también un gran cambio, pero me paso lo contrario. Yo vine a vivir a UK y esperaba poder salir de fiesta a la 1 am y no había nada abierto 😂

Lo de las vacaciones no es exactamente como lo cuentas. En España, normalmente, hay 22 días naturales de vacaciones, que sumando los fines de semana se convierten, más o menos, en un mes. Una vez gastas todos esos días no tienes derecho a más vacaciones. No puedes coger una semana en semana Santa, otra en navidad y luego todo el mes de agosto, por ejemplo. Los dias que coges en cualquier época se restan de tus días totales de vacaciones.

Hola Maddie, I was born in Madrid, and I live in Dallas. Here in America, a great ,great country. We have to earn one week vacation, here we don't have bars, or taverns, or cafeterias, I miss going to the cafeterias in Spain and have my breakfast, or just Cafe con Leche, going to a bar with friends and have tapas. Hey girl! I think you are making a great choice! Definitely look into some programs such as NALCAP, Meddeas, Etc. for teaching in spain. It is such an easy way to go and is a good path to stay longer term :)
21 = young? You must be American. At 21 most ppl in €urope are living alone and away from home. In a students' dorm or in little communities with friends. I don't really get your perceived problem. Find something affordable to stay, do your studies, find a job, live your life. Nobody said it'd be easy. But it's not hard either.

En España existe la siesta, pero no es ni una norma ni una costumbre. Los negocios cierran a esas horas porque la gente simplemente se vá a comer, y luego vuelve por la tarde a abrir sus negocios. Oye, quien quiera dormir algo, para eso estamos en un pais libre, para que dispongas de tu tiempo como quieras, pero desprendeos del mito de la siesta como una costumbre, algo exigido, etc. La siesta surgió como un mito, porque antiguamente, los trabajadores, carreteras, etc, después de largas jornadas, en la época del verano, hacían una parada, por el calor. Unos comian, otros jugaban a algo, alguno dormiría...Pero para es una costumbre, no es algo exigido ni frecuente

It is not true that everything is closed on sundays. I live in Madrid and I run all my errands on sundays: grocery store, pharmacy, etc. And you are also wrong about the holidays. Workers are entitled to 23 days off per year, that combined with weekends and certain national holidays such as Christmas Day, New Year or Holy Thursday or Holy Friday on Easter, might seem like more.
I worked for an American consultancy in Madrid, and there where no siestas, we worked easily on weekends, and our lunches depends on your workload...., so not everything is " a la spanish way"

No se donde trabajas tu, pero a mi dan 30 días naturales al año mas los 8 días de fiestas nacionales y 2 locales, que incluyen ya las fiestas de las navidades y pascua , lo de que te den 1o 2 semanas en navidad y en semana santa es completamente falso, son 2 o 3 días en cada una de esas festividades y dependiendo del sector donde trabajes ni tan solo eso, por cierto ya hace muchos años que al menos donde yo vivo (Palma de Mallorca) los domingos esta todo abierto. Lo de la siesta es otro mito aquí ya hace muchísimos años que nadie hace la siesta, los poquísimos negocios ,tiendas etc que cierran al medio día lo hacen para comer , no para hacer la siesta, estas hablando de una España de hace 30 o 40 años-
En total hay 14 fiestas en España, 2 de ellas locales para ciertas comunidades/municipios. Las fiestas que más duran suelen ser semana blanca, semana santa, navidad y reyes magos (van en conjunto estas 2 últimas) El gobierno tiene capacidad de trasladar cualquier fiesta entre semana para cuadrar las fechas (aunque esto no sucede casi nunca). Además, todas las fiestas que caigan en domingo las trasladan al lunes, ya que los domingos como tal no es día laboral, así que el día de fiesta deberá caer en un día laboral para proporcionar ese descanso merecido, en este caso caería en lunes.

I'm British and have lived in or around Barcelona for many years. Regarding dress, people here dress a lot more casually than other places in Spain when they go out.

I lived in the USA and had the reverse culture shock. Party ended up so early we had to continue at home, dinner was way too early for us, but thankfully we had a denny close to where I lived and they open 24h which is amazing.
Yeah...not to mention the food at Denny's...I mean talk about American cuisine woohoo boy!, and the best part all the cooks are Mexican so, is like being at home...madre de dios que generación documentada se nos viene encima...

Mi estancia en USA sucedió entre 2012-2014. Una cosa, el Dennys es una cadena de comida con platos pre-determinados y establecidos. Da igual si el chef es mexicano o tailandés o Indio. Tendrás salmón, filet mignon, tacos, y pancakes en el menú y las 24h del día, la nacionalidad del chef es irrelevante. Denny es práctico. Y era el único lugar (los Ángeles) cerca en dónde residía al que no había que ir en coche...

Your observations are spot on & to add, when I studied in Barcelona I was amazed by the prices. EVOO went for a euro/qt. & beer for 0.50/can. Wine was a great deal (3-5 euros) as were spirits (Spain doesn't use 'sin' taxes) & the produce & cheeses were far superior to anything sold in the U.S. A big surprise was how uncomfortable Spanish homes were when it was either hot or cold outside. The homes were beautiful (especially the wrought iron & tiles) but we shivered in Winter & sweat in Summer.
From what you describe, you were staying in an old building, some are more than 200 years old, and it is not always possible to adapt an air conditioning system without spoiling the aesthetics (it is prohibited) Most homes in Spain have air conditioning and heating.
@@albertomartin7576No necesariamente... en la costa mediterránea los constructores ahorran costes en aislamiento - básicamente no ponen ninguno. En el interior, como eso haría que la gente se muriera de frío en invierno no pasa tanto, pero muchas casas construidas cerca de la costa - incluso obra nueva - están siempre a la temperatura del exterior, con el consecuente gasto de calefacción y aire acondicionado (pero claro, eso lo paga el futuro inquilino, no el constructor).
@@rafarequeni822 la primera normativa de aislamiento térmico en España es del 1981... anterior a esa fecha te puedes encontrar cualquier cosa. Según la calidad de la construcción.

No conozco a nadie de mi entorno que en su día a día pueda hacer la siesta ya que están trabajando, eso es un falso mito, como que todos comemos paella, todos bailamos flamenco, todos somos toreros… 😂
Eso es de abuelos o de vacaciones de verano, obvio antes la mayoría trabajaban en el campo , no había climatizador y las temperaturas en el sur de España pueden superar los 40 *C fácilmente en verano .Por eso todos los horarios se adaptaban a las temperaturas convirtiendo a la gente en verano en vampiros huyendo del sol .
bueno si lo comparas con estados unidos, esto es una maravilla igualmente allí no tienen vacaciones pagadas y lo que tienen son unos 10 dias festivos retribuidos. Además, no tienen baja laboral, baja por maternidad y paternidad, etc. Es decir, los dias que estan enfermos tienen que ir a trabajar igualmente o se les descuenta de los días festivos (o sino pues muchas veces son despedidos si no van al trabajo). Las vacaciones pagadas como tal solo existen en los trabajos "buenos" y solo para aquellos que llevan muchos años en la empresa

Yo estuve en EEUU y la gente comía 12:30, 13... o sea que cada día retrasas la comida un minuto y en un mes y medio te adaptas 100%, que puedes entrar en cualquier bar a las 13 ó O13:15 a comer, qué exagerados son con la diferencia horaria.

People get more holidays in Europe in general,not just Spain. The problem is not our holidays,the problema is the miserable amount of vacation that you guys have in the US, that is a disgrace.
Small bussinesses close from 2 p.m to 5 p.m, but they are open up to 8 or 9 p.m, at 6 p.m all is closed in north europe and usa except commercial centers.

A critical thing when someone talks about at what time people do things in Spain is the offset. Spain belongs to the GMT time zone but has the GMT+1 hour thanks to a small men with a funny mustache who wanted to be friend of another small men with also a funny mustache. That means that when you compare our hours with the hours at other countries you need to take 1h away. Do we wake up at 7.00 everyday? Nope, is 6.00. do we lunch at 13..-15.00? Nope, 12.00-14.00. etc. The siesta is more common in hotter areas, normally south, because those who had to work outside wake up early to work during those hours with a lower temperature. For someone who works outside is not uncommon to begging to work at 7.00-8.00 (Remember, 6.00-7.00) in the morning so when they went home to lunch or during lunch times they're tired and get an small nap. It is also done in other mediterranean countries for the exact same reason. The lunch time being so long it is also a cultural thing but here also Spain is not alone. In Italy, for example, they also have a similar lunch time because in both countries lunch is a family thing and many people prefer to klunch at home with their family rather than just eat something quickly and go back to work. That said, and specially in industry, a reduced lunch time is everyday more common but at the same time this allows people to finish their work early so they end with more free time. The holidays. By law you have 22 days of holidays if you have a fulltime work. Those 22 days would be the equivalent of days that you should go to work but you don't have to so holidays and the festive days you would have in that period doesn't count. In the end you have arround 1 month of holidays. For the festivities there is a max of 14 festive days during the year. Wthat means that you end with an averante of 40ish days.
A lot of what you describe is common to Mexico. People, at least where my family is from, never dressed down. Wrinkled clothes were frowned upon and so on

As many others, you didn't really get what goes on between 14:00-16:00. This is not really for siesta, but simply for having lunch. Beside being later than most anywhere else, lunch is also the main meal of the day for many Spaniards. When possible, it is usually made at home, in family and easily takes more than one hour. Siesta is something that is reserved for hlidays or week ends, except in the hottest areas where in Summer it is simply necessary to spend those central hours of the day at home, and people usually benefits from taking a nap and then staying up longer at night when the weather gives a pause and cools down a bit.
Basically shops close when they are no going to have any customer.... well, they are also open when one finishes work, that's very convenient. In UK you finish your work day and most places are closed or closing.
gwydno: ^^^^. this! In the largest part of Spain, outside the handful of major urban centres, going home for a long lunch remains the norm. This means there are four (not two!) rush hours in Spain, the most hectic being the rush to get home for lunch around 14:00.

I'm American by birth, but I lived most of my life in Spain. I spent 4 months in Boston in 2016, but I've been in the US 3 or 4 times more after that for short visits. These were my culture shocks.
1. US cities are all car-centered, and not pedestrian nor bike-friendly, except for very few exceptions (Washington DC, NYC, Boston itself).
2. All Americans join a sports group or some sort of group (I lived in a college campus). If you don't join one of these groups, it will be hard for you to make friends. The rest of the time, people seem to be busy (study, work, whatever) and they are not interested at all in socializing.
3. They get drunk at 9-10 pm. Way earlier than Spain hahaha
4. Man, the diet... My roomate could drink 5 Dunkin Donuts ice-coffee full of sugar a day. Damn. I ate lots of Mac and Cheese.
5. Everything seems sort of separated and isolated from each other. Outside of the campuses or the downtown city area, is hard to see anyone walking. It feels lonely, depressing and sort of dangerous at times.
6. The Target and Wallmarts stores are huge. Many stores are meant to be big so to be practical. You just go to Target, buy all you need (food, pillows, blankets) and then go home. In Spain, we do more a shopping-hopping sort of thing, to many stores for different things.
San Francisco is walkable. I don't know what you mean by "All Americans" joining a group. I don't belong to any groups. Are you referring to all Americans at university? And as for point 4, I love Spanish food but I wouldn't exactly call it healthy.
@@christopherpaul7588 that’s maybe because you link Spanish food with Mexican or LATAM food, but it’s completely different., no burritos here. Spains diet is based on Mediterranean food, our main fat is olive oil, and fresh fish and veggies are a big part of it. Most of our diet is natural and fresh and is prepared at home. We usually reject processed food on daily bases. Our diet explains why Spain has one of the longest life expectancy in the world. Going to McDonald’s type restaurant is something just urban teenagers do and not more that twice a month. Also our meals has far less quantities and calories than yours, not huge XXL bucks of sugar drinks here. Even considering globalisation are changing to worst our diet, our overweight population it’s nothing compared to the US. Being from San Francisco you probably think a healthy diet is a raw veggies diet who just some trendy elite people follow. But that’s not the average in the US I guess.

Are you trying to say Italian food is also healthy? Spain and Italy both have delicious cuisines but neither is extremely healthy. There may be lesser known dishes that are healthy. Tortilla de patata is healthier but potatoes are really a lot of empty carbs. Chorizo? Delicious but not healthy. Jamón the same. I love croquetas de jamón but they are not at all healthy. I've traveled all around Spain and have not found a region where they only eat fish and salad. Sorry. Still one of my favorite countries.
The origin of eating that late is a financial crisis a hundred years ago, when people needed two works to thrive. They worked for example 7am-3pm and 4pm-midnight, so the only moment they had to eat was at 3pm.

Para mi, siendo español, lo más chocante fue la comida. No solo la calidad de la misma, porque seamos sinceros la comida de USA es una mierda. Más bien fueron tres cosas. La primera, es un poco tontería, es que no existe una cultura hacia el pan jaja, o a comer con él o a tener buen pan. Solo pan de molde. La segunda es esa forma que tienen los estadounidenses de mezclar toda la comida en un plato, aunque no combinen nada. Y la tercera es que sobretodo en los países mediterráneos la comida no es un momento de nutrirse y ya está, como en Estados Unidos. Es un momento social que puede durar mucho tiempo y donde se comparte y se está hablando. No solo en los fines de semana. Grande Maddie los videos molan mucho

Me costó meses conseguir que me trajeran gambas con su cabeza para poder hacer una paella decente y eso en el Bay Area de California. Al final las conseguí de un mejicano en el flee market. En las pescaderias de los supers siempre eran descabezadas y no entendían por qué las quería con cabeza en lugar de limpias. Al final se me conocía por mi paella en un área bastante grande e incluso desconocidos me pedían que se la cocinase. También me costó encontrar una cafetera italiana para hacer café decente. El café, como el pan, es horrible en todo el país.

Its not siesta, it's lunch time which for spaniards is like USA dinner, the big meal of the day so you need time for that and businesses close and then reopen so the workers and people can eat. It's like the same in the US everything is closed at 7 because people are assumed to be home having dinner. The siesta is more a stereotype than a reality.
La mayor parte de gente que conozco si que se echa una siesta, aunque sea de 15 minutos. Si es verdad que si vives en una ciudad grande no te va a dar tiempo a ir a casa comer y dormir la siesta, pero en el resto de españa, muchisima gente duerme una siesta de max 20 minutos, y no tiene nada dd malo!
Everything in the US doesn’t close at 7pm, just offices work 8-5pm and they don’t usually close during 12pm (when we eat lunch) because there’s usually multiple employees and we all take lunch at different times

It actually depends quite a lot on the area and the time of the year. Siesta far more common in the warmest part of the country. For example, in Galicia you won't probably have a siesta very often in July, you will just go to the beach, or on a hike to the countryside, whereas in Seville you'll probably need to rest for at least an hour until the sun goes down a bit, as the interior can be excruciatingly warm at that time of the year.
No. Everything is not close in the afternoon because of siesta. Siesta has nothing to do with working hours or shops or anything. From monday to friday nobody who has a job do siesta. there is no time to do siesta except on weekends. And almost nobody do siesta anymore.

La tradición de cerrar a la "hora de la siesta", evidentemente viene de la siesta, que a su vez viene de la hora sexta de los romanos. No es obligatorio dormir durante la siesta y cada vez lo hace menos gente pero no por ello deja de ser una costumbre mediterránea que aún se conserva en España y que en otros países se ha perdido. En ciertas regiones de España, por el clima, no se sale a la calle en verano durante esas horas y es de muy mal gusto hacer ruidos y visitas. Antes de ofendernos es preferible saber cuál es el origen de las costumbres que tenemos día a día. La siesta es algo a revindicar, no algo de que avergonzarse.
@@hoseruisu30 No quiero empezar una discusión aquí sobre los origenes de los horarios comerciales, pero algún artículo he leído al respecto porque siendo español y viviendo en el extranjero he tenido que escuchar varias veces la idiotez de que un pais entero se paraliza durante 2 horas al día para que sus ciudadanos se vayan a dormir. Evidentemente esto no es así y las razones historicas de los horarios comerciales NO tienen nada que ver con irse a dormir en mitad de la tarde. Antiguamente era el tiempo que se tenía para comer entre 2 jornadas laborales distintas. Sí, antiguamente los pobres tenían que trabajar desde que amanecia hasta aproximadamente el mediodia en un trabajo, volver a casa, comer, prepararse y volver a trabajar en otra actividad totalmente diferente. Nada que ver con echarse un sueñecito. Así que el que tiene que informarse aquí creo que no soy yo. Estoy muy bien leído al respecto y no hago suposiciones porque parezcan "evidentes" tal como tu escribes.
Otra cosa: esa costumbre que tu dices que es exclusivamente mediterranea no es tal. Incluso en inglés tienen una palabra propia para siesta (nap) y si existe la palabra existe la acción. En todo el planeta se duerme siesta (comprobado en primera persona porque he viajado por medio mundo) si hay ocasión y ganas. Lo que es muy molesto es pensar que es algo que solo se hace en españa, es muy molesto que te coloquen la etiqueta de vago por ser español y que la falta de comprensión del concepto siesta contribuya a esa etiqueta. Ahora niégame que los españoles tenemos esa etiqueta!

La siesta es una costumbre o tradición muy personal. No hay nada que reivindicar. Mi mujer extranjera, viviendo en el extranjero suele echarse una pequeña siesta. No creo que sea vergonzoso. Lo que es vergonzoso es la falta de información, pensar que algo muy comun es exclusivo de un pais, que algo muy comun sea algo de lo que estar orgulloso y es vergonzoso que te insulten a la cara llamandote vago por razones y costumbres que no son tales y te sientas orgulloso de ello porque en tu ignorancia pienses que esas 2 horas de pausa en el horario comercial tienen algo que ver con irse a dormir.
Me hace gracia que pienses que en España se paraliza todo entre las 2 y las 4 por la siesta jajaja, realmente no es por eso, tiene más que ver con nuestro horario laboral y la jornada partida. Pero bueno queda más gracioso decir que es por la siesta y además es más corto de explicar :P
El origen de la siesta se remonta al Imperio romano. La palabra ‘siesta’ proviene del latín ‘sexta’, que hace referencia a la sexta hora del día. Los romanos dividían el día en períodos de luz de 12 horas, y la sexta hora del día corresponde en España al comprendido entre las 1 de la tarde en invierno y las 3 de la tarde del verano.
La siesta en España comienza después de la Guerra Civil. En este período, era habitual que un trabajador tuviese más de un empleo para mantener a su familia y recurriese al mediodía para comer y descansar, y de esta forma poder rendir lo suficiente en el trabajo de tarde
También es por tradición en muchas partes de España, se hace la siesta porque cuando se trabajaba en el campo mucha gente descansaba cuando eran las horas mas duras del campo y esas suelen ser al mediodía.
La siesta ademas se ha trasladado a otros sitios porque se ha visto que es beneficioso para el cuerpo según muchos estudios de la NASA.
Incluso en otros paises tan alejados como Japón tambien se practica la siesta, alli le llaman "Inemuri" que significa "estar presente mientras se duerme" es habitual hacerlo en el trabajo o en el transporte publico, parques publicos y se considera algo positivo porque quiere decir que has rendido todo lo que has podido. La verdadera razon es que suelen dormir menos de 7 horas al día así que tienen que realizar el inemuri para poder recuperarse.
Si es cojonudo ser un estereotipo, y cuanto mas sencillo mejor..., así pa no romperse la cabeza mucho

En realidad el mayor error está en pensar que las horas de cierre de los comercios a mediodía y hasta la tarde son debidos a la siesta, pero quitando eso, no estoy de acuerdo en que lo de la siesta sea un simple topicazo ni que sea algo de antaño o de ciertos colectivos. No sé cómo serán las estadísticas si es que las hay, pero bajo mi percepción y como siestero orgulloso siempre que puedo, yo diría que es un poco fifty-fifty. Creo que a veces intentamos enmendar el error de los extranjeros que no se enteran bien de cómo va lo de la siesta con otra falsedad que es decir que eso no lo hacen más que los niños y los viejos, como renegando de ello para que no parezca que somos unos gandules. Ni una cosa ni otra.

Hay grandes diferencias entre norte y sur, y obedecen principalmente al clima y a las diferentes ocupaciones. No te puedes ir al campo a segar en verano en el sur a las 3 de la tarde, esos trabajos empiezan muy temprano... Y aunque ya no se hagan, forman parte de la cultura. El tema de los horarios es más reciente, tenemos la misma hora que Alemania o Polonia desde la dictadura, y no se cenaba hasta que el "cabeza de familia" llegaba a la casa de su segundo trabajo... Antes íbamos más con el sol, como en todas partes

Error que cometen todos los extranjeros: pensar que se cierran los comercios para echar la siesta.

hola maddie, I am also from the states and I have not "lived" in Spain however, I've had a staycation in Madrid for 10 days which isn't long at all but it was enough to get a decent understanding on the city. I agree with what you said about the way they dress in Madrid as its somethign I tell my friends all the time about how formal they dress in Spain and in Europe as a whole in comparison to here in the US. I did not deal with much siesta as I was in Madrid and honestly myself had a hard time adjusting to the time change but I also agree with the eating late and how the work life balance is a lot more forgiving in Madrid. multiple nights I was out aft midnight thinking the city would be shut down but I was so live and vibrant and made me feel jealous of everyone who has the privilege to live there. Hola Maddie, he visto algunos tik toks tuyos y me pareces muy simpática y graciosa. Soy de Barcelona y vivo en Chicago desde hace ya 7 largos años...Lo de la siesta me parece algo exagerado, porque de niña, en casa, la hacíamos sólo en verano, cuando por el calor de la tarde era insufrible estar en la calle. No la he vuelto a hacer y así hay millones de españoles. Lo de las horas para comer es otra historia, a muchos europeos también les chocan porque tienen horarios más parecidos a los de Estados Unidos...En mi caso, aquí en Chicago, preparaba la comida sobre las 3, porque mis hijos salían del High School muertos de hambre por la "¿comida?" que les daban entre 11:30 y 12. Así que comíamos y cenábamos con horario español. Lo de las vacaciones sí que es un buen choque, por lo escasas que son. En cuanto a la gente...pues sí, hacer amigos es súper complicado, de hecho, sólo tengo amigos hispanoamericanos A la gente de aquí no le interesa demasiado el otro, la cultura individualista es muy solitaria. Te deseo lo mejor, eres muy joven y con esa alegría e interés por el resto del mundo que tú tienes, seguro que la vida te va a sonreir. :)) Carmen
El descanso de medio día es para comer en familia y cuando los niños tenían jornada partida "escolar", todos en casa a comer a las 14:00. Esto se esta perdiendo por la cultura y la necesidad de trabajar padre y madre. Los niños comen en los colegios y hace pocos años eso no existía.
La siesta es para los mayores y las vacaciones. Se para 2 a 3 horas para comer.
Yo soy de Barcelona y siempre he vivido aqui. Nunca he hecho siesta, pero si que es verdad que hay gente que la hace. Y en cuanto al horario de comer yo como sobre las 2.30 - 3h pero ceno a las 8.30. Creo que todo depende de la familia y de la persona pero bueno, buen comentario.

Discrepo un poco con los "horarios" de la siesta,es cierto que se cierran muchos comercios al mediodia de 14 a 16 aprox.,pero mas que para la siesta,es para tener un par de horas para comer.
Se cierran los pequeños comercios que no son de comer, osea , poquísimos.
En verdad es al contrario a lo de la siesta, en lugar de trabajar seguido de 9 a 5 , se trabaja por la mañana, luego cierran un rato, y vuelven por la tarde a trabajar otra vez, o sea que en realidad se trabajan mas horas que en otros paises

For me the most cultural shock I experienced when I lived in California was the need of a car to go everywhere, how big and packed were the Highway and how big was the State. A beautiful place with amazing beaches, mountains and a wheather so simular to the one we have in Murcia. Lovely place California, I really had I beautiful time there.

1) So, to summarise: in Spain they work to live; in the USA they live to work. 2) Also: speaking today (the 5th of January) America´s first mass shooting of the year has hit the news, while here in Spain the Christmas holidays are still in full swing; lots of parades tonight for Tres Reyes tomorrow. 3) Not sure where you get this idea about Spanish "formal dressing" from; leggings are virtually uniform for many young women here. :D

Vivo en los EEUU desde hace mas de 20 años, y lo que los españoles no se dan cuenta es que la "petarda vulgaris americana" (como esta amiga) es un animal urbano tan común o mas que en Espana, no os dejéis engañar, que no es oro todo lo que reluce...que no hay nada que copiar o muy poquito...

Hay varias cosas de Estados Unidos con las que no podría vivir, pero la número 1 es sin duda el sistema sanitario. No me cabe en la cabeza que no haya un sistema de salud pública universal.
Lo de la siesta es otro topico se cierra en pequeños comercios porque va poca afluencia porque aqui se come fuerte a esa hora y en verano mucho calor y porque se alarga horario laboral por clima, en paises nordicos todo es de 9 a 5 ininterrumpido no comen fuerte mediodia y en invierno a las 3 se empieza oscurecer , aqui se acaba a la 20 horas , anochece mas tarde , nos ajustamos al clima y costumbres, en grandes ciudades no hay "siesta" , comercios no pequeños no cierran mediodía, aqui realmente las siestas no las hace entre semana sino niños y personas mayores o estudiantes...

Quien te escuche pensaría que en España no se trabaja, es injusto que tomes las vacaciones escolares como ejemplo de lo que hace la población en general. Los trabajadores tienen derecho a 23 días laborables de vacaciones al año y existen adicionalmente 15 días feriados nacionales/locales a lo largo del año y no suele haber más de 2 días feriados consecutivos (jueves y viernes santo por ejemplo, nada de 1 o 2 semanas en semana santa).
En cuanto a la supuesta siesta, muchos restaurantes y locales cierran para que su personal pueda comer y preparar el local para la jornada de la tarde. Igualmente hay que cumplir con las 8 horas de trabajo diario o más. Por supuesto muchos de los que no trabajamos en el sector comercial/servicios laboramos de 8 a 5 como en otros paises.
Los domingos, restaurantes y otros sitios de esparcimiento están abiertos pero, excepto en Madrid, no se considera necesario que las tiendas abran ya que muchas abren hasta las 9-10 de la noche los otros días.
Para mi el horario fue también un gran cambio, pero me paso lo contrario. Yo vine a vivir a UK y esperaba poder salir de fiesta a la 1 am y no había nada abierto 😂

Lo de las vacaciones no es exactamente como lo cuentas. En España, normalmente, hay 22 días naturales de vacaciones, que sumando los fines de semana se convierten, más o menos, en un mes. Una vez gastas todos esos días no tienes derecho a más vacaciones. No puedes coger una semana en semana Santa, otra en navidad y luego todo el mes de agosto, por ejemplo. Los dias que coges en cualquier época se restan de tus días totales de vacaciones.

Hola Maddie, I was born in Madrid, and I live in Dallas. Here in America, a great ,great country. We have to earn one week vacation, here we don't have bars, or taverns, or cafeterias, I miss going to the cafeterias in Spain and have my breakfast, or just Cafe con Leche, going to a bar with friends and have tapas. Hey girl! I think you are making a great choice! Definitely look into some programs such as NALCAP, Meddeas, Etc. for teaching in spain. It is such an easy way to go and is a good path to stay longer term :)

21 = young? You must be American. At 21 most ppl in €urope are living alone and away from home. In a students' dorm or in little communities with friends. I don't really get your perceived problem. Find something affordable to stay, do your studies, find a job, live your life. Nobody said it'd be easy. But it's not hard either.

En España existe la siesta, pero no es ni una norma ni una costumbre. Los negocios cierran a esas horas porque la gente simplemente se vá a comer, y luego vuelve por la tarde a abrir sus negocios. Oye, quien quiera dormir algo, para eso estamos en un pais libre, para que dispongas de tu tiempo como quieras, pero desprendeos del mito de la siesta como una costumbre, algo exigido, etc. La siesta surgió como un mito, porque antiguamente, los trabajadores, carreteras, etc, después de largas jornadas, en la época del verano, hacían una parada, por el calor. Unos comian, otros jugaban a algo, alguno dormiría...Pero para es una costumbre, no es algo exigido ni frecuente

Unless you're a teacher, vacation in Spain is one month per year (30 natural days, or 22 working days).

It is not true that everything is closed on sundays. I live in Madrid and I run all my errands on sundays: grocery store, pharmacy, etc. And you are also wrong about the holidays. Workers are entitled to 23 days off per year, that combined with weekends and certain national holidays such as Christmas Day, New Year or Holy Thursday or Holy Friday on Easter, might seem like more.

I worked for an American consultancy in Madrid, and there where no siestas, we worked easily on weekends, and our lunches depends on your workload...., so not everything is " a la spanish way"

No se donde trabajas tu, pero a mi dan 30 días naturales al año mas los 8 días de fiestas nacionales y 2 locales, que incluyen ya las fiestas de las navidades y pascua , lo de que te den 1o 2 semanas en navidad y en semana santa es completamente falso, son 2 o 3 días en cada una de esas festividades y dependiendo del sector donde trabajes ni tan solo eso, por cierto ya hace muchos años que al menos donde yo vivo (Palma de Mallorca) los domingos esta todo abierto.
Lo de la siesta es otro mito aquí ya hace muchísimos años que nadie hace la siesta, los poquísimos negocios ,tiendas etc que cierran al medio día lo hacen para comer , no para hacer la siesta, estas hablando de una España de hace 30 o 40 años-
En total hay 14 fiestas en España, 2 de ellas locales para ciertas comunidades/municipios. Las fiestas que más duran suelen ser semana blanca, semana santa, navidad y reyes magos (van en conjunto estas 2 últimas)
El gobierno tiene capacidad de trasladar cualquier fiesta entre semana para cuadrar las fechas (aunque esto no sucede casi nunca). Además, todas las fiestas que caigan en domingo las trasladan al lunes, ya que los domingos como tal no es día laboral, así que el día de fiesta deberá caer en un día laboral para proporcionar ese descanso merecido, en este caso caería en lunes.
Semana blanca? Eso qué co. es, soy español.

I'm British and have lived in or around Barcelona for many years. Regarding dress, people here dress a lot more casually than other places in Spain when they go out.

I lived in the USA and had the reverse culture shock. Party ended up so early we had to continue at home, dinner was way too early for us, but thankfully we had a denny close to where I lived and they open 24h which is amazing.
Yeah...not to mention the food at Denny's...I mean talk about American cuisine woohoo boy!, and the best part all the cooks are Mexican so, is like being at home...madre de dios que generación documentada se nos viene encima...

Mi estancia en USA sucedió entre 2012-2014. Una cosa, el Dennys es una cadena de comida con platos pre-determinados y establecidos. Da igual si el chef es mexicano o tailandés o Indio. Tendrás salmón, filet mignon, tacos, y pancakes en el menú y las 24h del día, la nacionalidad del chef es irrelevante. Denny es práctico. Y era el único lugar (los Ángeles) cerca en dónde residía al que no había que ir en coche...

Your observations are spot on & to add, when I studied in Barcelona I was amazed by the prices. EVOO went for a euro/qt. & beer for 0.50/can. Wine was a great deal (3-5 euros) as were spirits (Spain doesn't use 'sin' taxes) & the produce & cheeses were far superior to anything sold in the U.S. A big surprise was how uncomfortable Spanish homes were when it was either hot or cold outside. The homes were beautiful (especially the wrought iron & tiles) but we shivered in Winter & sweat in Summer.
From what you describe, you were staying in an old building, some are more than 200 years old, and it is not always possible to adapt an air conditioning system without spoiling the aesthetics (it is prohibited)
Most homes in Spain have air conditioning and heating.
@@albertomartin7576No necesariamente... en la costa mediterránea los constructores ahorran costes en aislamiento - básicamente no ponen ninguno. En el interior, como eso haría que la gente se muriera de frío en invierno no pasa tanto, pero muchas casas construidas cerca de la costa - incluso obra nueva - están siempre a la temperatura del exterior, con el consecuente gasto de calefacción y aire acondicionado (pero claro, eso lo paga el futuro inquilino, no el constructor).

No conozco a nadie de mi entorno que en su día a día pueda hacer la siesta ya que están trabajando, eso es un falso mito, como que todos comemos paella, todos bailamos flamenco, todos somos toreros… 😂
Eso es de abuelos o de vacaciones de verano, obvio antes la mayoría trabajaban en el campo , no había climatizador y las temperaturas en el sur de España pueden superar los 40 *C fácilmente en verano .Por eso todos los horarios se adaptaban a las temperaturas convirtiendo a la gente en verano en vampiros huyendo del sol .

allí no tienen vacaciones pagadas y lo que tienen son unos 10 dias festivos retribuidos. Además, no tienen baja laboral, baja por maternidad y paternidad, etc.
Es decir, los dias que estan enfermos tienen que ir a trabajar igualmente o se les descuenta de los días festivos (o sino pues muchas veces son despedidos si no van al trabajo).
Las vacaciones pagadas como tal solo existen en los trabajos "buenos" y solo para aquellos que llevan muchos años en la empresa

"Siesta culture" is just an anglosaxon cliché. In a working day, its very rare that anybody takes a nap after lunch. Except for the elderly people.

People get more holidays in Europe in general,not just Spain. The problem is not our holidays,the problema is the miserable amount of vacation that you guys have in the US, that is a disgrace.

A critical thing when someone talks about at what time people do things in Spain is the offset. Spain belongs to the GMT time zone but has the GMT+1 hour thanks to a small men with a funny mustache who wanted to be friend of another small men with also a funny mustache. That means that when you compare our hours with the hours at other countries you need to take 1h away. Do we wake up at 7.00 everyday? Nope, is 6.00. do we lunch at 13..-15.00? Nope, 12.00-14.00. etc.
The siesta is more common in hotter areas, normally south, because those who had to work outside wake up early to work during those hours with a lower temperature. For someone who works outside is not uncommon to begging to work at 7.00-8.00 (Remember, 6.00-7.00) in the morning so when they went home to lunch or during lunch times they're tired and get an small nap. It is also done in other mediterranean countries for the exact same reason. The lunch time being so long it is also a cultural thing but here also Spain is not alone. In Italy, for example, they also have a similar lunch time because in both countries lunch is a family thing and many people prefer to klunch at home with their family rather than just eat something quickly and go back to work. That said, and specially in industry, a reduced lunch time is everyday more common but at the same time this allows people to finish their work early so they end with more free time.
The holidays. By law you have 22 days of holidays if you have a fulltime work. Those 22 days would be the equivalent of days that you should go to work but you don't have to so holidays and the festive days you would have in that period doesn't count. In the end you have arround 1 month of holidays. For the festivities there is a max of 14 festive days during the year. Wthat means that you end with an averante of 40ish days.
A lot of what you describe is common to Mexico. People, at least where my family is from, never dressed down. Wrinkled clothes were frowned upon and so on
In short. In Spain they work to live in US they live to work
If you want to make money , go to US. If you already have money go to Spain.
