Yes, I agree. And it is not easy to play Rosalia as she must react the entire time to being mocked by Anita and the other girls. She did it wonderfully. She also sings her parts very well. And this is high school!
Fun fact, I learned this from a friend who was in West Side Story. MTI's rights contract stipulates that if any production puts the male Sharks in America, they will shut the production down and the licensee will pay a penalty of 10,000 dollars
Oh, that's very interesting, thanks for sharing that! I've always been wondering why they didn't put the guys in this song in any of the stage versions. I know that in the original musical it was only the girls, but I really like what they did in the movie. The points that are made against the life in America are actually valid, and I feel like the movie does a better job showing that than the musical.
@@lonelylittledot ik they dont have boys in america in the bway verson because they would have to do a quick change. thanks to movie magic, it is easier for them to be in america.
MTI administers the right contract, but the owner of the rights to WSS is the Bernstein Family Foundation. I know they are very particular about stage productions. I was under the impression they were more lenient on high school and youth theatre productions, but more stringent on professional productions. But it also makes me wonder about the deals Stephen Spielberg had to make to produce the movie that's coming out. I noted a couple of changes from the original movie, the character of Doc was changed to Valentina, played by Rita Moreno, and the jet character Diesel, who's a regular to stage productions of WSS, is in this production, where in the original that role was Ice.
@@williamspark9472agree but it's good publicity to both the theater, and the musical itself so they most likely won't do anything about it. Especially if they got recording licenses from mti
I'm a Puerto Rican from New York. I have seen versions of West Side Story many times. My family's story is like the musical when we moved here from the Island. I don't care about brown face or that most of the girls are white. I want an excellent performance and these girls delivered. What a High School Theatre Dept!!!!
This was flat out an incredible performance. Everyone did an unbelievable job and I would have gladly paid money to see this show. Kudos especially to the pit.
I can't believe their in high school level in theater, they look and sound like college level professionals, congratulations you guys on this show. besides Grease been my favorite musical , west side story my second favorite, so you guys did really awesome in this show , looks and feel like the movie version but you took it and make it your very own version.
I can't believe that this is not an Equity performance! These kids are incredible! They have the voices, the acting skills and are spot on the choreo (and it is NOT easy choreo) Triple threats! All of them! Kudos!
Okay...welll after hearing the orchestra a second time and watching performances....this is a great high school production. I showed the video to my girlfriend who played Conseulo on tour, she is covering 'Angelika Schuyler' (on break). She wanted me to tell you guys, "I know you do!!"
wow I am really fascinated by this. I'm from Germany and we don't have something like that. Our school system doesn't bring out our talents unless you are on a special school. (Like, we have ballet high school here, but these things are very rare...) So I am totally in love with american high school musical productions!
I am watching the scenes one by one because I was already surprised by the talent of Maria, it is so hard to believe this is highschool production, and now I am thinking : oh ! not only they sing and act so well, they also can dance perfectly ! Wow ! Students and teacher(s) should be so proud !
Wow! Amazing, and its only a HIGH SCHOOL performance ?! Amazing. Was there an actual pit orchestra or was it a recording playing the orchestral music ?
Where have I been? Just saw the incredible Stratford cast, and they are extraordinary. New film version of WEST SIDE STORY being filmed as I write this. Top notch cast, with a Christmas opening 2020.
I know this is like 8 years old but WOW this was a stellar performance!!!!!!! i can't believe these HS students did the original choreography just WOW!!!!
All the people saying it's blackface; no it's really not! I think i know working on a stagecrew for the past 5 years, it's just the way all stage makeup is, it's to stop all the lights shining off their faces
@@isamarromeroborjas8676 and if they did and they weren't as good it wouldn't be this good I'm Hispanic but I'd rather see the best possible then mediocre for "authenticity"
wow this is amazing for a school production! great job girls! Your directors and choreographers and coaches are im sure very proud of you all. good luck on everyones career in performing arts. keep it up
I memorized the dance for this song for this vodeo and the lyrics from just listening for my Anita audition I got Consuelo the girl with the blonde hair in this video but I just listening to this on repeat
I'd love to be in this class. My school's productions that I've seen (I'm a freshman so I'm not in it yet) are well-done and politically relevant but I would kill to do this many fun classics.
CourtneysNoneExistingLife because the musical was first, the film came after that and in every musical version it's just the girls, for some reason they changed it for the film

ummmmmmmm oh my GOD!! how was this only a high school performance?? its AMAZING!
Musicals&Typewriters - check out the other clips from this same show - "Cool" & "Mambo" & "Officer Krupke"
Musicals&Typewriters The accents are horrible but a great show. I liked the Bye Bye Birdie show better.
Wonder if it's a performing art school?
A regular high school, but with a great theater department.
Frank Gzz America's Boyfriend it's not. We just have a fantastic theatre department
The girl in the yellow skirt has an especially good stage presence.
Detectivefiction yeah
Yes, I agree. And it is not easy to play Rosalia as she must react the entire time to being mocked by Anita and the other girls. She did it wonderfully. She also sings her parts very well. And this is high school!

No, glee still sucks the big one lol
Ikr!!!!
Yeah, really great production, eh? Love the song and performance.

Pretty sure MTI wouldn’t appreciate the license violation of the recording and posting online.

It's great - very high standard for school students. Full of live, audible, well-sung lyrics and nice dancing!

As somebody from Latino descent, I wholeheartedly agree!
it's not brown face but stage make up, in camera it looks so odd

Irvin Bonelli I
Yes they could be seniors though
Can I give a moment to appreciate the stage crew? The camera work was incredible!
This got to be the best non-professional performance I have ever seen.

the girl in the purple dress played roxie in their production of chicago i just realized omg
Sabrina O'Connor she also just finished a national broadway tour of 42nd street as the lead Peggy Sawyer!
Molly Richter OMG that's amazing !! Wow congrats to her
Sabrina O'Connor What's her name?
And the girl in the blonde wig, orange dress played Velma
Great choreography and great dancers. Well done!
Wow! If that was one of my kids up there, my eyes would well up with pride. I'm very impressed, and I'm sure their parents are very proud! Impressive!
i just loved helping puting on that play i was in setcrew so i never got to see it but everyone i talked to afterwards said it was amazing.
Really well done, I have seen professional performances that do not match the energy and youthful exuberance in this number.
Only a high school play?!!! Wow this kids are awesome!!!
Congrats from México ;P

Anita plays the part perfectly! The perfect blend of feisty and energetic! Fabulous dancing!
the anita...FANTASTIC!!!!!
I was watching Stratford doing "Chicago, " now WSS. I'm astounded. Keep it up, Stratford, you're doing great things.
Broadway material. Dancing way above any other high school performance. Bravo!!!!
I love how Anita sings “if there’s a road you can drive on!”
Fantastic! It's a close second to the last Broadway revival with Karen Olivo and company!
wow I am really fascinated by this.

Big fan of anita!! Dancing, singing, facial expressions are extremely good for a high-school student!
My high school also performed this Musical, I was Rosalia! I loved watching this! This was an AMAZING performance!! Bravo ladies!!!!
These are high school students? Un-friggin-believable. This was an INCREDIBLE performance. Riveting. Wow!!
Is it just me or the girl playing Rosalia is so good she outshines Anita every time they interact?
THIS IS NOT. A HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMANCE. I REFUSE TO BELIEVE. Hella proud!!
This was really good gave me chills❤️‼️‼️‼️
Excellent Production...Thank you for posting!

High school show? and the people in the pit orchestra in my high school refuse to put on West Side Story because "its too hard!"
Does anyone know the name of the jump kick they did at 2:58 ?
Izzy Side it's called a hitchkick
Omg I thought this was a west end performance wtf amazing
But why is this scene/song completely different to the movie?
CourtneysNoneExistingLife because the musical was first, the film came after that and in every musical version it's just the girls, for some reason they changed it for the film
Hmm thats odd oh well still incredible

The girl in the orange dress with the Marilyn Monroe hair played Velma Kelly in their Chicago production & the girl who plays Anita was Roxie Hart

Should’ve transferred there
Performing arts school forsure
Yo no veo latinas ?
