Where is the balanced critical review?? Right here: pretty good (pun intended); a tad forced, rushed, and unnatural. There's a reason film directors take 💯 takes....
Eliza Masewicz as Maria has a beautiful voice and perfect stage presence. She does so much with the lyric "I feel pretty". I've never heard it sung so beautifully, and so convincingly youthfully.
"The original lyric is "bright" rhyming with "tonight". They changed it to "gay" (rhyming with "gay") to match the setting in the movie". You prolly mean 'day' but we get your point.
I’m so excited to see Spielberg’s remake of this masterful classic by Leonard Bernstein. And the fact he kept it in the original Bernstein time period only makes me even more ecstatic.
the performance was great, but i just feel bad that these actors were given such poor direction when it came to the accents. also... the makeup. even at the high school level, if you're going to cast people with light skin as the sharks, just keep their natural skin. it looks weird (and mildly offensive) when you try to use dark makeup. those are my only things, this was flawless otherwise! i wish they hadn't done that though, bc it just makes it hard to focus on the awesome vocals and performance with stuff like that. hope these actors are still performing, they're really good!
I love this very professional (can't believe it's a high school's) version of WSS. I'm not Puerto Rican, but I'm Mexican and I found nothing "weird" nor "mildly offensive" with their accents or with the use of makeup on a musical theatrical representation (OMG! imagine that!) This version of María with Eliza Masewicz it's adorable and perfect. I'm sure Leonard Bernstein would love this María.
They changed the lyric for the movie because it originally took place during the day, while the Broadway version took place during the day, and gay rhymes with day

Actually the voice in that movie was not Natalie Wood, I read that she sang it but in the end her voice was replaced by that of a singer, which saddened Natalie.

@@yogadr6 it's a highschool production, not a Broadway musical.

It's a very high standard high school show.! Bravo! Bravo!
These Stratford productions are marvelous for a high school troupe.
her accent its so amazing, so is her singing,i love her lmao.
i can't do that accent and i'm from latinoamerica, lol
They did so well! Can’t believe this is a high school production!
Bravo to any theatre group that performs west side story. It’s the best way to introduce modern young folk into a classic Shakespeare story.
This version of María with Eliza Masewicz it's adorable and perfect. I'm sure Leonard Bernstein would love this María.
jajaja this Maria its, adorable, crazy and good singer
What a good Maria! She could directly join broadway!

I usually hate this part but these girls interpreted it perfectly. Gave me a new perspective on the song. Just brilliant.

She was good!
The girl in the pink dress is so beautiful!!
That was so good for a high school taking out the racism🙈
Those are students? I don’t believe that! I should gladly pay to see a production of that quality.
Their accents are really good
calm down they took out gay because everyone would take it the wrong way. bright means exactly the same thing
Mayah Johnson that's not why. The original stage/ broadway lyrics is "bright". They only changed the lyrics to "gay" for the movie.
it’s the original lyric

This is a HIGH SCHOOL show???
I wish I could be in this number or the America number. But I’m not Puerto Rican

they are using spanish accent from europe!!!!

(As Little Richard) SHUT UP!
and gayyyyyyyyyy not bright
Moe Halabi In the actual script, not that of the movie, it is actually bright
